| | HUH?? Who says we are "enlightened"???
If you look at the track record that the U.S. has in MANY areas, and
will come out from behind the flag for a moment, I believe you'll see
that we have a DISMAL record in animal care, protection and generally
with regards to the environment. Sure, we DO have a large number of
people and organizations that DO really care, but as a whole, this
country is shamefully uncivilized regarding laws to protect innocent
    and helpless creatures.

I think though, that the population of folks like the Noters in this
conference is GROWING, so there may be some hope for the future...but
there are literally hundreds of examples that can be listed that makes
one wonder how we can even call ourselves "civilized" much less
    "enlightened"!!

A couple of examples: The little cat with the rubber bands on it's
paws, one in my town that was carrying an arrow around, (The
perpetrator was caught and is in a mental institution now..), the
literally MILLIONS of pets that are simply killed each year because
some allegedly "civilized, thinking human" decided that the
responsibility for these animals could be ignored, so the animals were
    discarded like an old shoe..

I think a lot of what we do in this country is exemplary, but there
is also much that we should hang our heads in shame about also..

| 4503.2 | and a judge who's got it all wrong.. | DEMON::MURPHY |  | Mon Apr 01 1991 12:36 | 15 |
| | Heard on the radio a couple of days ago about a Judge who had only
fined a man $1 for abandoning a box of puppies in a dump. Judge gave
reason that "the bible states that God created animals to be killed by
man so there was nothing wrong with what that man did to the puppies".
That kind of reasoning from a judge who is supposed to be just I'll
    never understand.

He is either reading a different Bible than I know or doesn't
understand the text. I don't believe God intended anyone in the human
race to be cruel to any of God's creatures. This includes animals
raised by some for food, eggs, and dairy products. Humane treatment
should be for all - humans and animals alike.

This is another good reason why Judges should be ELECTED instead of
appointed by some politician!! It might be wise if this so-called judge
were to take a course in bible reading!!

| | another sad note:
California animal cruelty laws are all in danger due to a state supreme court
ruling stating that the definition of cruelty and abusive treatment were too
vague in a community's animal protection statutes, thereby invalidating most
of the statutes that currently exist on the books in this state. We are also,
along with the Southern states, a hot-bed of dog fighting and cock fighting.
Remind any Californians that start bragging about how enlightened this state
is about these little issues - of course, we are also a hot-bed of race
supremicists groups(S. Cal. mostly, thank heavens) - I wonder if the brain
damage that leads to THAT attitude also makes a person cruel to animals?

| | On that animal cruelty note, Cosentino (can't remember his first name,
but he is the son of the owner of the Cosentino's grocery stores) was
just found guitly of cruelty to animals in court today. He was shooting
neighborhood cats with a bow and arrow. Jan called to give me the news.
I am not sure what the sentence will be yet, but will let you know when
    I hear.

| | re: the bible - I did a Children's message on this in church once.
(Even brought Mao along) The bible states that God gave man
"dominion" over animals. Dominion means "control or Sovereignty".
The responsibility works both ways in such a relationship. While
the subjects have a responsiblity to obey their ruler, the ruler
has a responsibility for their welfare. The ruler must protect
his/her subjects and not abuse them.

That, plus the message that animals feel pain too, was the basic
gist of my message to the children that day.
