775.0. "Clothing that advertises" by SALEM::BURGER (NORM) Fri Aug 16 1996 13:49

I'd like to hear people's thoughts about clothing and other apparel
which displays the name of the manufacturer and in effect makes the
wearer into a billboard for the product. How did this get to be so
prevalent? Shouldn't there be some sort of compensation for wearing
    these advertisements?

    Fashion. Humph. Go figure.
775.5They pay professionals to advertise, don't they?NETCAD::CREEGANFri Aug 16 1996 14:5919
I do not wear clothes that advertise unless I
get the clothes for free or I AM ADVERTISING
(wearing a t-shirt with Joe's Garage Shop, etc)
for someone who had a special interest.

    BUM EQUIPEMENT
    COCA COLA
    CHAMPION
    JUST DO IT (atheletic shoes)

That kind of stuff I don't buy.
    I have removed labels
that were affixed to the outside of a
garment. OK, I confess, I do wear
LL Bean clothing with their logo on
the outside for all to see, but only
because of the sale and some of their
stuff you just can't get (quality-wise
    or Polortec fabric) anywhere else.
775.6WMOIS::CONNELLStory does that to us.Fri Aug 16 1996 15:1622
I also do not purchase clothing that advertises. I do wear a number of
t-shirts that have Vertigo (DC Comics "mature" line of comics. Their
description, not necessarily mine) characters on them. ie. Death and
Sandman t-shirts, etc. No names of companies or else a copyright DC
Comics in small print at the bottom and occasionally a GraphitiDesign
    logo on a sleeve.

I have gotten a couple of T's that advertise certain casinos or Miami
Beach or such and a couple of college jersey's, but those were gifts. I
also have a couple of Pepe' wear t-shirts that were gifts, but I wear
those because the very bestest friend who bought them for me calls me
pepe' (French for grampa, not Spanish for Peter, I think) This is
because the 75 Newport I was driving, I called an old Pepe'Mobile one
day. It's been Pepe' ever since.

I don't believe in advertising without compensation either. I don't
like it on clothing or on car bumpers (dealer's names) or on
appliances, but whatchagonnado? It's there and I live with most of it.

    Bright Blessings,

PJ (or Pepe' what ever you want)

Wow, I was just talking about this very thing with a buddy of mine,
yesterday. I don't wear anything with logos, adverts, etc.
no walking billboard for me. Not even Bulls stuff! Ok ok,
I do have a small plastic Packers helmet on my screen...

I think there is a difference if you have team logos, if you happen to
be a fan. I guess it shows your support or whatever. I tend to avoid
that sort of stuff, but I do have jackets from Bradley University and
DePauw as those were the Universities my kids attended. I was proud of
them and the institution and had no problem advertising for them.

I do not wear Coca Cola, etc stuff. It is, however, impossible to
avoid the logos on running shoes. Other than that, I tend to avoid
    named stuff.

775.9Good boy gone bad...USPS::FPRUSSFrank Pruss, 202-232-7347Fri Aug 16 1996 22:3135
All my "golf" shirts have some sort of Digital thing on 'em. Only wear
them for the shows where they are handed out, "casual" days at work or
around the house for the most part.

I have some tee shirts from France that have a little logo on the
sleeve that says DECATHLON. It's the equivalent of Sports Authority or
other mega-sports store over there. (I'm not eligible anymore, but
    couldn't resist.)

Otherwise, there is the "running shoe" problem. What are you supposed to
do? Sand 'em off? Paint over them?

I wear some logo socks for a running shoe store in my neighborhood,
    because a friend owns it.

(Truth in advertising: I am exercise "phobic". I am not a "runner"! A
little cycling from time to time, and playing with the dog, at most.)

I have some other shirts that are from places: Beach towns, etc. Do
    they count?

Jeans all have some sort of logo, but the belt usually covers most of
    it.

The rest are freebies that only see the light of day when the laundry
gets really deep. (It is a mistake to own more than ten pr. of
    underwear!)

I wear a tee shirt with the Brasilian flag (Brasilian Portuguese does
not have a "Z"...). I grew up down there & have a soft spot for it.

I used to be real anti logo, except for the high school jacket. But
    now I'm jaded, I guess.

Since advertising is part of the cost of products. By wearing products
that advertise you are keeping costs down, so in effect you are
    getting paid.

I disagree. The bottom line is my Korean made Nike should only cost
about $75 instead they are $120 because of Air Jordan commercials.

    jack,

the last I checked Nike's are now made in Indonesia, and Nike is
looking to move to Viet Nam, as the minimum wage in Indonesia has been
boosted from 1.60 to 2.55/day, or something closer to a living wage for
    the economy there.

$120 for a shoe that cost less than 12 dollars to manufacture and ship
to the US? Nice money if you can keep your conscience asleep in the
back of your head. I personally don't think much of Spike Lee of
Michael Jordan for making this much money on the backs of other people.

and here I thought they had moved all their production away from Korea,
as the workers there are demanding something resembling a living wage.

this probably belongs in the TTWA note, but what is driving this
sudden attack of consumer ethics and morality?

this "off-shore" manufacturing practice has been going on since
i was a kid. i remember (probably around age 8) admiring a new
baseball glove (Spaulding, i think) and noticing it was made
in some far away eastern land.

now, i wonder what wages they paid those poor souls back in...
never mind.

Now that all these grossly-overpaid celebrities have made all
their millions endorsing these same products, they can afford
to turn around and bad-mouth these same companies without be-
ing personally affected. And it makes them appear to care a-
    	bout people in general.

775.23Whatever floats your boat; not mine, but no biggieDECWIN::RALTOJail to the ChiefTue Aug 20 1996 13:0719
We talked about this in some earlier 'box version (or maybe even
this one), but I occasionally enjoy repeating myself, so I'll throw
    in two cents:

I never wear anything bearing the name of any product, or even a
sports team, with one exception (a cap that I chose for its color,
to be more visible to the kids in a crowd).

The kids can wear clothes with sports team names on them, but that's
    it, no other product names.

I cannot accept the claim that people who wear product advertising are
helping to keep down the price of the product. Do we really think
these companies are passing on any such savings (which could not be
isolated and identified, in any event) to the consumers? Bwah-hah.
The free advertising provided by walking billboards is strictly gravy
for these companies. It doesn't bother me, though, so have at it.

Actually, I wear these things. Because people give them to me.
That and books. They know I read a lot and I wear rags, so they
try to help me out. I have T-shirts with logos of companies I've
never even heard of, jokes I don't get, rock group tours (at least
I think they are), college teams. "Go Greenmen !" kind of thing.

I prefer them to the books. Why do people give me science
fantasy books ? The only scifi I read is the hard stuff, with
real science in it. And mostly, I prefer non-fiction. I guess
they think I'm the type. Bad guess.

    I would have thought people wear Nike,Reebok etc,etc for 1 of 2
    reasons.

    a) They feel comfortable whilst running/pole vaulting/playing baksket
    ball etc. (Small %)

    b) They are sadly trying to impress total strangers that they can
afford to spend xyz on a t-shirt/shorts,trainers etc and thus make
