726.0. "Marge Schott - the mouth that roared" by ACISS2::HORRIGAN_C () Thu May 09 1996 18:56

What's the deal with this woman? Is she crazy? On drugs? What's your
    theory?

Also, should or should she not marry Bob Levine? I think they would
    make a great couple, myself.

She's just from the "old school", which means you can wear your
ignorance on your sleeve and it's acceptable.

Her last quote wasn't that bad, I just think she said it differently
    than she meant it.

Adolph Hitler _did_ do some positive things for Germany, which was in
shambles following WWI. He got industry going, gave Germans some pride
in their nation. She indicated that he went wacko after that. Prolly he
was wacko before that and nobody recognized it. She certainly should
avoid interviews, she never manages to make herself sound good.

    A few choice Marge-isms:

"I feel cheated. This isn't supposed to happen to us, not in
Cincinnati. This is our history, our tradition, our team. Nobody
feels worse than me." -- April 1, when the season opener was
called off because umpire John McSherry collapsed on the field
        and died.

"Everybody knows he was good at the beginning, but he just
went too far." -- on Adolf Hitler, in a recent ESPN interview.

"Why do they care about one game when they're watching
another?" -- April 12, after fans complained that one of her
cost-cutting moves resulted in elimination of updates on the
        scoreboard.

"Only fruits wear earrings." -- May 1994, addressing a gathering
        of government officials in Cincinnati.

Marge was also reprimanded by MLB for unspecified "racial slurs" in
1993. Marge is the majority owner of the Cincinnati Reds.

    Regards, Chris H.

he could drag them on the ground like a monkey. Then there was someone else he
called a little monkey. Both people were African American.

She has to give up the everyday running of the club, but she still owns
it, she can still go to the games. And to make sure she doesn't get someone to
be her voice, they are going to hire someone who has nothing to do with the
club at all to run it. What was holing things up a bit was if they were going
to do it past the 1997 season. I think her contract for running the team ends
in 1999......

of the Brewers. What baseball really needs is a REAL commissioner. Someone who
is not an owner.

That's because those two points aren't on the same line. Her inane
comments are the cause of her loss over the day to day ops. It's her
failure to conform to some sort of MLB rules or other. (I haven't been
paying close attention, but I read part of an article that said that
she her comments weren't the cause of the MLB moves against her.)

The problem with owning sports teams are that they are FRANCHISES, and
one has to abide by the franchise rules...in the nitty gritty legalese
of all franchises are penalties. etc. clauses which are imposed if
certain deeds, actions, etc., are threatening the good name of the
    business.

It's alike like a local McDonald's owner saying the same things as
Marge. He'd prolly be subject to discipline by McDonalds in his
    franchise agreement.

I was going to buy a franchise and start "my own business" once...then
I learned about these penalty clauses and the fact that these
franchises are really not yours, you're just licensing the right to do
business as long as u abide by their rules...

this is how MLB gets away with dealing with the likes of Marge and
    George S...

    re: .66

Aha, thanks for the explanation. Now it makes sense. Initially I'd
thought that the "league" was just some loose association of
    independently-owned teams.

While in the doctor's waiting room yesterday, I picked up a Sports
Illustrated featuring a close-up Schott's face on the cover, and read
the accompanying article. To say that she's eccentric would be the
understatement of the year. Of course, the article was designed to
be unflattering, but she is definitely in some kind of alternate
reality. Which should not disqualify her from owning/operating a
business, but given the franchise clauses, etc., at least now it
    all falls into place.

I've heard about the frustrations of running a franchise, and I'd
never do it. If you're going to do that much work, might as well
go on your own all the way.

    Chris
