554.0. "What do you do at Digital ?" by DPDMAI::GUINEO::MOORE (HEY! All you mimes be quiet!) Fri Sep 29 1995 02:01

New topic: Since a few of us aren't in New Hampster, we don't really
know what most of the box denizens do ?

So, besides lying (why do you ?), what do YOU do for
    	       Digital ?

    My job is:

    1) Installing everything, by virtue of reading manuals, in front of
hostile customers. Also known as layering.

    2) Hoping the Reading engineer didn't have too many yards the night
       before he programmed.

    3) Explaining to customers that I do not live in Colorado Springs.

    4) Dreading end-of-quarter, when tiny gnomes spring forth from the
woodwork expecting a detailed rehash of something I worked on
for 2 hours, 3 months ago.

I've worked on Digital products since 1978, under VMS 1.0. I've
worked for Digital for 1 year, 2 months, 3 days, 16 hours, and 19
    minutes.

    Well, since you asked...

I'm a software engineer contract type working in SHR in Shrewsbury
Mass. I work on a product line known as "Video Interactive Information
Services," which is known to the general public as "video on demand."
    Basically, it's cable TV software.

I'm one of six engineers who are writing a component known as
the "Storage Manager." The SM is a C++ application that uses
an Objectivity database. It keeps track of what each couch potato
orders, and where all the "assets" (movies, games, clips, interactive
applications) are located... if someone orders a movie that's not
currently available on a server (either an Alpha/OSF box or a 486/
Novell Netware box), another piece of code gets called to suck
the movie in from an automated tape jukebox. All the movies are
stored in MPEG I or II (an ISO standard) compressed video format.

I have held four different jobs in four different years, so who knows
how long I'll be doing the following....

Since last December, I have been the Telecom Administrator for the
OMS group. I am responsible for all voice and data circuits used by
Digital and some of their customers across the entire Canadian
network. I currently handle approximately $700,000.oo worth of
invoices a month (at last count, I believe it was around 225 invoices)
If you follow a circuit from it's inception, you would get a clear
idea of my job:

1) Request/Order arrives at my desk from the internal Digital customer
2) If necessary, quotes are obtained through either x.400 or envoy
from the different Telecom companies (usually Bell or Unitel)
3) Order is reviewed for accuracy and then I assign a PO# for tracking
purposes and send the order off electronically to whichever Telco
    is getting the business
4) Orders are entered into the allocation system using Genisys
5) Invoice arrives - cross-checked with the quotes and if necessary
(which means often), the Telco is contacted to fight over
    descrepancies
6) Allocation updated with new amounts

Same process is handled for new installs, cancellations and moves. Every
invoice must be checked against what shows on allocation and any
change must have a PO# referenced to indicate why the $ amount has
changed

7) Once the invoice has been approved, cheque req is sent to A/P
and I begin again next month!

In addition to the above, I am responsible for the creation and
distribution on a number of monthly reports having to do with Telecom.
In fact, if you have anything related to Canadian Telecom administration,
I'm your Gal!

I'm a software engineer working in what is now called the Software
Partner Engineering Group. During organizational games of hide-the-VP
during the last three years we've had about half-a-dozen different
names, but I started off doing nearly the same job five years ago in
the Independent Software Vendor Group. That was one of nine different
groups merged to become the BPDA, later the ...hmmm, it had the word
Competency in it somewhere, but I forget that acronym... later the
Independent Software Vendor Engineering and Technical Support Group
(that's the ISVETS in the personal name above, after which I refused to
change it anymore for awhile.) The mission throughout has been to
provide technical engineering assistance to vendors porting third-
party software onto our platforms. We were founded back when MIPS
was a new word- and our mission was deemed critical ever since we got
our first Alphas about six months before they hit the street. For the
last year and a half I've been onsite with a major database partner,
working on recent ports, 64-bit safety issues, and the large memory
    addressibility feature.

i work on dbi (database integrator) the last remnants of database
technology sold directly by digital. most of my time was spent
coding up the back-end of the sql compiler which decomposed
queries into smaller sql queries directed at various gateways
(oracle, sybase, rdb etc.) and integrates the results. the
latest gateway shipped will allow integration of data on pcs.
this way folks can now use standard pc database query tools
such as msquery, access, powerbuilder to read or write live data
that is lives across lots of pcs across the enterprise (in an
efficient and timely matter). like doug we've suffered from
many reorgs and vee pees and of course the software strategy.

Rob Cashmon, Corporate Valuing of Differences (VoD) Evaluator (contract)

As a contractor working under the auspices of Worldwide Human Relations
and Corporate Personnel, I have been delegated the task of entering
different Employee Interest Notesfiles to determine which employees
are living up to the goals, standards, and benchmarks defined in the
corporate Valuing of Differences (VoD) policies, and which employees
can be counted upon to be good corporate citizens and Team Players.
After I prepare my reports on different individuals, those reports
are then forwarded to the individual's manager, who is directed
to include the employee either in the next round of TFSO, outright
    dismissal, or salary raises/cuts.

Can I have everyone's attention please? Thank you.

Due to some mail that I received from people who took me seriously,
I wish to reiterate that in .50 I was ONLY KIDDING. I repeat -- ONLY
KIDDING. Not only does my real job have nothing to do with VoD in
any way, shape, or form, but I would certainly never have anything
to do with getting people fired for violating VoD policies.

    I WAS ONLY KIDDING.

I mean, really! If I had that kind of power, don't you think I would
be able to get my own account, instead of running around impersonating
Jack Martin? Did you also really think that I hunt bison with a spear
    on some prehistoric plain?

    I WAS ONLY KIDDING.
