Wail,

Since it's a kinda paper, there's a couple of things you can do in the
regions generally associated with sitting.

First it provides reading matter for the nonce. Then it can help you
whipe your troubles away...

Wanna know something about togas and women? In Rome, two groups of
    people wore togas:

    o Free male citizens

Yank my modem out of my peecee and toss it in the pool (if I can
reach same from my deck). then delete the driver I downloaded
from AOL, after saving it on a floppy, and see how far I can toss it.
Then take my PC and toss it out in the parking lot and watch all the
little pieces go scattering all over the place. Then, take my TV
and toss it over the deck and see how many pieces it will become.

I'd really like to do it, but likely won't.

Jim, I had a friend one time that had to change the water pump on his
car. To do this he had to take off the airconditioner. It took us 6 hours, and
a lot of skin, to take this off. And still a lot of that had to be done by
forcing it off! (why do things rust solid?) He took the thing, ran down his
driveway, and slammed it a few times onto the pavement. He got his frustrations
out, and we replaced the water pump. Turns out that he had to put the air
conditioner back on after he had beaten it up. It was too funny....

I've rappelled from a helicopter, and bungee-jumped from 185' over
a river. To my way of thinking these are activities one voluntarily
pursues only if one has a very good head for directions, faith in the
competence of one's instructors, and very good equipment. Even with
all of these, though, I found the bungee experience to be so intense
that it wasn't fun. Combining them just wouldn't be fun for me.

their money was safe when they offered to pay for my jump... they

I've done a parachute jump, abseiled (reppeled) aussie style (forwards)
down a 200 foot cliff face, done cliff jumping on skis, hung out with a
few sharks (not the card type!!) etc. I just thought that bungee jumping
from a helicopter 1500 feet from the ground would be one hell of a rush and
just about top it all off. Ohh I wouldn't mind base jumping from a cable
car, like that guy on the pepsi max ad, but that's not enough.

I've been told there is a bungee platform on some cliff face and that,
when you have jumped and the cord is fully extended, there is still a
couple of thousand feet left of air before the ground. That would be
pretty cool, expecially with the added danger of hitting the cliff face.

The state of da 'Box is degenerating, like everything else. Where
are the classic notes of yesteryear ? Rather than just bemoan our fate,
and sink into nostalgia for replies gone past, I think we need a
revival ! And what better way to boost the art of noting than by
making annual awards ? It's easy - at the end of 1995, we take a
brief few moments to honor 'Box distinguishment of various kinds.
     Here's a few possibles :

The Haag Sheepskin - best note or reply by a 'Box rookie
The Nasser Pan - most hilariously mangled sentence
The Topaz Signet - most contemptuous one line note
The Sucking Leech - most deft snarf
The Napoleonic Bust - most memorable action by a moderator
The coveted Meowski Towel - best "yes it is"/"no it isn't" dialogue

You get the idea. Of course, it's just a concept, and we would need
some sort of nominations, some sort of way of breaking ties, etc.
     What say others ?

    Thing I'd Like To Do:

Buy a new motherboard/CPU to replace my old 386SX-16.

Things I'd Not Like To Do:

    	Unplug everything in the back.
Unscrew and remove the floor stand.
    	Unscrew and remove the cover.
Yank out all the existing video, modem, etc., boards.
Yank eight memory boards without breaking/frying them.
    	Unplug all the stuff inside.
Take out hard disks and floppy drive, maybe CD-ROM.
Disassemble half the frame to get at the old motherboard.
Figure out how to remove the old motherboard.
Figure out how to install the new motherboard.
    	Reassemble the frame.
    	Reinstall the various drives.
Plug various plugs back into the correct sockets.
Push memory cards into new connectors without breaking them.
Install all the existing video, modem, etc., boards.
    	Screw the cover back on.
Screw the floor stand back on.
Plug back in all the cables in the back.
Turn the thing on while the kids man the fire extinguishers.
Test stuff to make sure the thing works.
Repeat all of the above steps until everything works.
Pay someone an exorbitant amount of money to do the above.

I think I've just talked myself out of the "Thing I'd Like To Do"!

Ho-ho, yeah, I tried that one and didn't get past the first
    round of negotiations... :-)

re: cheaper to buy a new system

It sure is less work, but I don't know about cheaper. I can get
a new motherboard with 486DX2-66 for about $250, and if I really
want to get extravagant, one with a Pentium-90 for about $700.
The Pentium motherboard would end up costing more though, because
they're all PCI systems and I'd like to drag some more use out of
my old ISA SVGA board (which isn't even a year old; before that I
was using an old 8-bit VGA card cannabilized from my old XT :-)).

My technique has been to spread out upgrade costs, and little by
little over the years, I've replaced or added almost everything in
the system except the motherboard. But even then, I stay firmly two
steps behind the start-of-the-art, mainly because I don't really
    need it.

In fact, the only reason I'm even considering upgrading the motherboard
now is that most new software of any real interest (no, not Windows 95)
is demanding at least a 486. It's mildly annoying; I can remember
when the 386's first came out, everyone said that this would be all
the power you could ever possibly need. Ha... That was before the
    multimedia stuff, of course!

Being a stingy old miser, I'll probably upgrade the motherboard
someday, but I'm not looking forward to it.

    Chris

We both must be stingy then because I`m thinking about a 486 sx66 that
will be up-gradeable to a Pentium at some point in the future. I can
get the 486 for $1100.00 which is in my price range but can`t swing the
    Starion at $1500.00.

    re: .126

Hmmmm... can a 486 and a Pentium use the same motherboard and chip
    socket?

I mean, if you start out with a 486 system, can you subsequently
replace the 486 chip with a Pentium? Or does it get more complicated
than that, or have some other restrictions?

    Chris
522.128MPGS::MARKEYManly yes, but I like it tooMon Oct 16 1995 11:447

Sure, you can upgrade the processor from a 486 to a 586
of the same clock speed, but depending on the mother
board design (specifically, the bus interface design),
it could be like putting a 350 semi-hemi in an AMC Pacer.

    Waterskiing

    Close your eyes and imagine.

A cool summer morning, and the sun is half way up, just peeking over
the suface of the water. There is a slight mist hanging over the water.
A gap of about 1 meter between the water, and the mist, that is slowly
    lifting, and melting away.

You are out there on your waterski, skiing along, and all you can hear
is the sound of water gushing under your ski. The water is so smooth
that it is as if you are gliding over pool of milk.

I remember a few years back I was up in Scotland, and not unusauly for
    Scotland, it was raining.

We were supposed to have gone skiing. About 30 of us. We only had two
hours. So it would have been a little tight.
Because it was raining, only slightly (as it does in Scotland for days on
end) no one wanted to ski.
So I had the whole loch to myself. It was great. The rain had kept the
water warm, there was not a breath of wind.
