I have found that at 35, I'm getting more contemplative on certain
matters regarding life, deat, family, etc. I don't know if it's mid
life or not, but seeing as the men in my family die fairly young (my
father just turned 60 and he's had 3 heart attacks in the last 2
years). I don't know that it's a crisis (I haven't had the urge to go
buy a red sportscar (no offense Dr. Dan) or anything yet), however it
is a point in my life where I'm taking inventory and evaluating where I
am.

You want to talk about a tough age? How about adolescence?
You're not a kid, in fact (if you were like me) you were supremely
pissed that you weren't a kid anymore (I *liked* my childhood,
even more than I'm liking my second one), and you're not an
adult yet with the freedoms, money, and perks that come with it.
It was frustrating as hell.
I'm convinced that a lot of adolescent attitude and misbehavior
has its roots in anger and confusion over lost childhood, but
they either don't realize it or wouldn't admit it.

520.52 | My Views On What Constitutes Middle Age | LUDWIG::BARBIERI | | Fri Aug 18 1995 13:34 | 49 |
| I've given this some thought and here they are:
I'm 37 years old so please make allowances for any lack of
intellectual ability! ;-)
I thought to divide the aspects of 'realization of middle age'
into three categories:
1) the opposite sex
2) awareness of one's own mortality
3) athleticism - physical ability
First, women. I have come to terms with a temptation that I
have and I often think in terms of absolutes. I have come to
realize a certain sinful propensity. I desire virtually every
woman who appeals (or could potentially appeal to me - as I haven't
personally come accross every woman in the world) to me to consider
me to be an absolutely essential part of their life. It is a shame-
less temptation which I try to resist.
I would estimate the total number of such woman to be perhaps
one billion, maybe a half billion. Whats the world's population
anyway?
With respect to this category, middle age is that time when I have
fully come to grips with the fact that the above desire is
irrational. It is also that time when you realize that women in
their physical peak have little to no interest in you as a
potential partner.
I guess I'm not there yet! But, I'm getting there.
Mortality. When you really realize you are going to die. In spite
of my spiritual beliefs, I'm not there yet.
Athleticism. When full court basketball is no longer worth it and
when while you cover a person in his late teens to early twenties,
such a person scores on you before you realize he had the ball!
I'm not there yet, but I hurt after athletics more than I used to!
Well, I guess I'm not there yet. May I mentally age gracefully!

Note 520.43 Aging/Midlife crisis 43 of 52
WMOIS::GIROUARD_C 3 lines 18-AUG-1995 07:32
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
hey, i ended a relationship about with a woman about 7 years younger
than me. i met a woman 7 years older than me (about 10yrs ago). i
married her... never been happier!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It bummed me out though as that meant Chip became my brother-in-law!
;^)
I think how you feel about yourself all comes down to where you are in
your life (in relation to where you expected to be) at any given age.
I'm 45, closing in on 46. At 34 I was divorced, no kids, never owned
my own home and had basically nothing but a job and an apartment. I
was bumming. Met my current wife a couple of years after that, got
married 7 years ago and my life just gets better all the time now. I
have two step-daughters who've become like my own (ages 21 and 26
respectively) and my oldest just had her first child 3 months ago so
I'm kinda-sorta a Grampy (to the most handsome, intelligent, and
perfect baby boy ever born (no bias here!)). :^)
It's never bothered me getting older (I run, bike, stay in shape pretty
well and and am healthier than I ever was in my hard-drinking 20's) but
for some reason, when I hit 43, I was bothered for a few months by the
fact that I WAS getting older. That 60 was a lot closer than 20. But,
it went away and I'm sailing along again.
I forget who originally said it but I like this quote:
"If you didn't know how old you were, how old would you be?".

I read a few of the replies to this note and it seems alot of you are

Um, let's just say...I'm still in my 20's, I don't remember what I was

| I will be 44 on 09/06/95 but I feel more like 34. I think my activity
level is what is making the difference here. Sure I have the joint
problems but Bally`s hepls me through that and then theres the
community involvement with the fire department that lets me feel good
about me. I don`t feel like I`m at my mid point yet.

Ah yes, mid life.
Being 42 I guess I must be there.
Truthfully, turning 30 bothered me more than any other age.
Having seen my father buy an incredible sports car in his mid 40's
I suppose the midlife crisis is a real thing.
Then again, when my mother backed into it, I saw a REAL crisis take
place. He also deciced to live in Harvard Sq. for a while, eventually
rejoining the family.
For me, nothing radical has really happened......yet.
I do find myself becoming disillusioned at times as we seem to
be just getting by and these are suppose to be my peak earning
years. Probably the results of being a one-income family with 2 young
children in the 90's.
The worst thing....wife is starting to look like mother-in-law.
The best thing.....my vision is getting worse.

| mid-life schmid-life, it's all in your heads. ain't no such thing
unless you believe in it :-)
actually, it has gotta be caused by being soooo responsible over the
years and simply needing an escape (even if it's temporary). i don't
think it has anything to do with chronology exclusively.
me, i won't have any of it. i'm in better shape now than i was in my
20's. well better physically. my 20's nemesis was in better partying
shape fer shere...
