--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The "box denizens" link (or whatever it's called) doesn't seem
to point anywhere. At least from VMS Mosaic...

Maybe we should have a photo of Simon Szeto on the home page
    or the early history page.

And, as for history, the events of 1988 were at least as interesting
as anything that happened before that. But no way would I write
that up, mainly because I don't know all of it. :-)

It appears that Mosaic may be more sensitive than Netscape to certain
    syntactical anomalies in the HTML.  I fixed a missing quotation mark;
the link to the denizens page will now resolve correctly.

    How about:

    - An address (postal-type) for mailing photos?

    - hyperlinks to websites often quoted here, like the Congressional
      site, etc.

517.3SMURF::BINDERNight&#039;s candles are burnt out.Fri Aug 11 1995 13:2011
    Address for mailing photos:

    	Dick Binder
    	ZKO3-3/Y32

Please include your DTN, cube number or other identifying info,
mailstop, and email address (DECnet, TCP/IP).

Adding links to oft-quoted Websites is a good idea. I don't have my
finger on the pulse of each recommended URL - please request here that
a given URL be added. I'll put up an item for this very shortly.

Okay, this works fine for me now, thanks.

BTW, somehow it's funny that the first "Web site relevant to SOAPBOX

Pointing to topic 87 isn't what was wanted. What I've done was to
write a script that filters the results of an EXTRACT into a live HTML
file with active links to every http: site listed in topic 87. With
due allowances for failures to foresee people's inevitable gaffes in
entering syntax, of course. (I did make it smart enough to fix http:/
and http::/ into http:// and I also took into account a few things like
the fact that mosaic.playboy.com is now known as www.playboy.com .)

Wot's all this bollox about "having to hand-code the 'BoxPage???"
Gentlefolk, iffen you WANNA have a 'BoxPage in CyberSpace (albeit safe,
    non-visible-to-the-great-unwashed-INTERNET, within the Great Corporate
Firewall) for our WebRavings, then... (flourish) ... look no foider
than -- Workgroup Web Forum(tm) from your friendly neighborhood Network

    http://www.ibg.ljo.dec.com/wf/ibgforum_open/dispatch.cgi

I mean, wot dis loverly, lovingly-created 'BoxPage is, is a sorta
crippled, non-interactive-as-DECnotes, simulacrum of what the 'Box
would dream of being, IF IT GREW UP into a MULTIMEDIA, USER-WRITTEN
THINGIE on the Web. This cannot, <i>trust me on dis, 'BoxBubbas &
'BoxBubbelehs,<i> be done singlehandedly by even the most generous-
hearted, HTML-savvy, 'BoxHardened 'BoxDenizen, even the estimable Herr
    BinderSan...

It has to enlist the READERSHIP to become the WRITERSHIP. With their
own little fingers, pounding away on their own little clients. Ya
know... the way you have become accustomed to do, with your DECnotes
clients, onto BACK40::'s Notes Server? But WEBBISHLY???? With
whatever browser you happen to have handy? Down to Lynx or even (God
    save us) WWW??

But not to worry -- we're Digital -- WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY!!!

Please to note, (pun intentional), iffen you wanna have a CyberVenue
for this sort of CyBerdinage, someone <i>far</i> nuttier than me will
have to volunteer to take a kit and install it on THEIR box... You
won't catch ME moderating this nuthouse, if and when it ever goes
    Webbish.

    No-Flippin-WAY!!

With a bit of quite-easy-to-do customization, you could have virtually
everything that Herr BinderSan is now laboriously hacking up, all done
    fer FREE!!

(And btw Herr BinderSan, you asked offline about how you might automate
the notification of users when someone new "signs up..." -- howzabout a
NEXT UNSEEN command? And a per-user BOOKMARK?)

But don't order yet... How'd you like a FULL TEXT SEARCH across the
    ENTIRE INFOBASE? At lightspeed...?

    But wait, there's MORE...

One would thinq, but one might be mistooken... tho' the jury is still

Point of info -- It is perfectly possible to hand-craft whatever sorta

as passaable as a Passat and with even more Fahrvergngen, tacked onto

Natrlich you are right that we gots a forum going here on BACK40::,

of 'BoxDenizens, some of whom, regrettablement, we would perforce

    Just in case anyone cares...

The generation of the Topic 87 links list on the Box Web site is done
automatically by a pair of robots, one on this VMS system that extracts
the contents of Topic 87 nightly at 10:00 p.m. and one on my ULTRIX
workstation that runs at 10:30 to filter the extracted notes into an
    HTML file.

If you see links that won't resolve due to things like slashes added or
removed from the end, I may be able to smarten up the filtering robot.

    >> What happened in 1988 that is as interesting as the years before it?

To make a long story short (others correct me if I'm wrong):

We had a "freedom of speech" crisis of sorts. Things got out of
hand (by the standards of some, that is). Ultimately the 'box was
seized and shutdown by others. It was closed for a while, then
it re-opened with new mods and a long, new set of rules that (in
the opinion of some) made it pretty difficult to discuss anything.

Most of the box old-timers "resigned". Lots of new "polite" boxers
came in; most of these had previously been read-only, but had been
somewhat intimidated by the old style, and felt safer coming into
the new 'box (which was termed "politebox" or some similar term,
    by some).

Over the next several weeks, the new rules were relaxed somewhat,
and simultaneously most of the resigned old-timers came back, and
the box reached a steady state of sorts, that was at safer and
more in conformance with the evolving corporate standards, but
some would say also less interesting and dynamic. It's been pretty
much the same since then, to everyone's relief. :-)

I think that the SEXCETERA crisis happened a couple of years
earlier, actually (I joined the group that had "owned" that
conference in 1987, a year or so after the crisis had passed).
The SEXCETERA crisis was probably worse in that some people
almost lost their jobs over it; I don't believe the 'box crisis
was as bad, but then I wasn't involved in it, thankfully.

I remember peeking at SEXCETERA only a couple of times, back

See .30 for a list of the formats I can handle.

Anything at a resolution higher than 72 dpi is a waste, because I'll
just have to re-rasterize it anyway. If your scanner software is any
good, it will already have done the necessary dithering. You will see
better results from files with 16- or 24-bit color than from 8-bit.

I will extract this information and add it to the Denizens directory
    page for future reference.

You musta scanned it at a resolution rather higher than 72 dpi. I can
take a file that big by copying it, and re-rasterize it. Or you can
rescan at lower resolution. 'Sup to you.

Makeover artists have been known to throw up their hands upon sighting
Mr. DelBalso.

Pick one:

1. His pulchritude is so striking that a makeover is unnecessary.
2. They throw up their hands in joy upon finding a model for Fabio's

Well, I don't know where it was that we were discussing the blotchkis that
needed to be removed from the scanned pictures added to the the box web
page the other day...

But anyway, I have just replaced the inferior PC-scanned gif image of the
Renoir Monet on http://bulova.zko.dec.com/people/john_covert.html with a
jpeg which has a million times as many colors in the same file size.

Now that all decent browsers support inline jpegs as well as inline gifs,
there's no apparent reason to use gifs anymore.
