| Even as only a casual observer of Elvis, I tend to think of at least
five different Elvises (Elvi?) or Elvis periods:
Rocker Elvis
Movie Elvis
Dormant Elvis
Pop Elvis
Vegas Elvis
I liked Rocker Elvis (e.g., "Hound Dog") and Pop Elvis ("Cold Kentucky Rain"),
but I didn't like Movie Elvis, and positively couldn't stand Vegas Elvis
(listening to him butcher his classics live in Vegas is like nails on a
chalkboard).
There used to be someone in here who was a big Elvis fan, but I think
they've left (or they'd have replied in here by now, I suppose). Was

Movie Elvis was very sad, the Colonel made him do the movies because
they paid alot of money. His gospel singing is also very memorable.
I thought his 68' comeback special had him in true form. Sang
excerpts of "One Night", which was originally called One Night of
Sin, but he had to change the lyrics because they were objectionable.

The Elvis fan who used to be in here was "Wild" Bill Slater, who has
since departed for sunnier climes. Wonder if he ever wrote that
"cyberpunk" novel? Wonder if I really care...hmmmm...guess not.
FWIW, there are no good Elvis songs. The man never wrote a note
or a lyric. However, there are plenty of great rock, pop, country,
gospel, etc. songs that Elvis performed extremely well.
The man was a giant. We won't see his like again.

>Subject: Elvis alive and well in Tallinn?
I forward an urban legend:
According to Tallinn City paper / Estonian Magazine Nr 8, 1993:
---------------------------------------------------------------
ELVIS ALIVE AND WELL IN TALLINN
---------------------------------------------------------------
Elvis Presley has been sighted in different cities around the
United States since his alleged death in 1977. In this exclusive
report, Melody Mourne writes that the King of Rock and Roll is,
almost definitely, living in Estonia's capital.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"There he was", explained an excited Linda Laan, 51, an
attendant at the Minsk Fruit and Vegetables Store, where, last
month, Laan got the surprise of her life.
"I didn't recognize him from across the counter at first", said
Laan. "His chin doubled over and his skin was kind of worn and
gray. But I knew his face from somewhere, and then, it came to
me... it's Elvis! The King!"
It's a familiar story. Elvis bying beets in a Tallinn suburban
market, Elvis on the 50 bus to Lasnama"e - Elvis, naked,
sweating in a neighborhood sauna.
Two years after Estonia opened up to the West again, more and
more residents in Estonia are bearing witness that the King of
Rock and Roll now lives in Tallinn.
Well-placed sources say that the King, now 58, had become fed up
with his life on the run in the United States, being hounded by
gossip rags and little old ladies with blue hair.
"He'd had it with the US", said one source, an Elvis confident
in Tallinn, who spoke on condition his name not be used. "Too
many people there knew he was alive. He couldn't take it
anymore."
But why Estonia? Why come here? "It's logical", this man
explained. "Who would ever think of finding him here. If you
want to lay low, Estonia's the place for you."
Elvis arrived in Estonia last year and, according to sources,
already speaks passable Estonian, though with a real funny
stutter.
Reactions to the news that Elvis has taken up residence in
Tallinn have varied from excited to downright ungracious.
"Lennon's the real King", said one local DJ. "As far as I'm
concerned, Elvis is dead."
But most Estonians expressed glee and pride that Elvis chose
their country as his new home.
One source claimed to know that Elvis is squatting in an
abandoned building in Kopli, a Tallinn suburb notorious for
heavy organized crime activity.
At least one witness in the area, a notorious drunk, swore he
had seen Elvis in the Kopli neighborhood trading in old beer
bottles for deposit.
Others doubt the veracity of such reports. They say Elvis has,
in reality, taken up with a group of Finnish investors and now
conducts scrap metal deals behind the scenes at a huge profit.
"He's no idiot," said another self-professed Elvis confidant.
This source also claimed that Elvis did not live in Kopli, but
in the Soviet-built monster complex of Lasnama"e
"where he can blend in and get lost in the crowd."
Inquiries at an office in block number 18, said to be Elvis'
building, led to vehement, defensive denials by a Russian
landlord. "Don't know what you mean", he said. "What Elvis?
Never heard of him."
Neighborhood kids, however, verified that a man fitting the
King's description - sideburns and curled lip - regularly came
in and out of the building. "He's really nice," said one kid.
Neighbors directed this reporter to door 37, where they said
they saw the alleged King enter on several occasions. A man
inside reacted angrily to questions about his indentity: "Leave
me alone... just leave me alone," the man kept shouting.
>From time to time, the King goes to local variety show and sea-
side casino because "it makes him feel home", said one source.
But for the most part, like most average Estonians, Elvis does
not have much of social life.
Some sources, however, reported that Elvis, since shortly after
his arrival, has been seeing a woman named Olga, described as
"big".
After almost a year here, Elvis is apparently becoming
discontent. He has a violent reaction against Estonian jellied
meat, for one. And he apparently doesn't trust the locally
processed milk. "I never trust milk rapped in plastic bags", he
supposedly told a grocery attendant.
Some in his alleged circle of friends say that Elvis initially
appreciated the fact that Estonians don't stick their nose in
other people's business. Now, they say, he's beginning to feel
neglected.
Friends also say the dark Estonian weather this past winter
drove Elvis crazy. "Real bummer," a close confident reported
Elvis as saying.
Elvis is reportedly thinking of moving to a sunnier, more
hospitable climate, something a little closer to Tennessee.
According to good sources, the King has recently been talking
fondly about Kazakhstan.

Not to change the subject, but there's a great deal of speculation
that more child sexual abuse charges against Jackson will soon come
to light.
On top of that, there's a very unflattering article in Vanity Fair
which calls into question deals that were cut for his NBC interview.
However, the article was written by a woman whose husband runs
the news department at a competing network...
The result is that times will continue to be tough for Michael.
I can't even look at him anymore... he makes my skin crawl.

I'm with ya on that one. What's really sad (for me) was watching
a tape I made a few years ago when there was a special to honor
Berry Gordy and Motown. Michael and his brothers performed for the
special, but film clips were shown of the Jackson Five. Michael
was a very handsome and good looking AA man; what he has done to
himself with the plastic surgery is a travesty!!
I read a current article on his collapse; it said other that the
viral infection, doctors thought he might also be anorexic, thus
adding to his health problems. Anorexia is not as common in men,
but it isn't unheard of; anorexia killed Karen Carpenter because it
caused an irregular heart beat and medics said the irregular heart
beat detected by medics after his collapse was why he wound up in
intensive care.
It's obvious MJ has been in emotional trouble for years; it's too
bad someone couldn't have convinced him to take some of his wealth
and get help!!
I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't more molestation charges
forthcoming. After he paid off the one kid a few months later he
was seen travelling was again with young boys in his entourage. He
stopped that when the press collectively raised their eyebrows.
A few former bodyguards have spoken out saying what we've seen
published is just a drop in the bucket. Payoffs/bad publicity
doesn't cure pedophelia, they just make it go underground; I was
wondering when additional claims would surface.
