455.0. "Rescue of Pilot" by SALEM::WINANS () Thu Jun 08 1995 17:16

Heard on the news today, the downed F16 pilot was rescued by U.S.
Marines while under fire. Gotta give that pilot a lot of credit
for staying out of Serb hands for 6 days. Amazing, he can avoid
capture, but UN toops can't avoid being captured and used as
    pawns.

    Makes one wonder..........

The pilot apparently is being treated for hypothermia and some
other injuries, otherwise he is in pretty good shape.

    > pawns.

He was one person, whereabouts unknown, aware that he was being sought
by hostile forces and hence possessed of a strong motive for avoiding
capture. Peacekeepers are many people, right in the public thick of
things, who are not expecting to be taken captive.

There's nothing to wonder about, unless the wonderer is a little thick.

in the middle of the Bosnian capital would be more likely to be

    Remember where you are. :-)

    > good shot at
    > tracking him down..

Actually, sarcasm aside, that's not true. The Boserbs aren't using
crack person-hunting dogs, to the best of my knowledge. This means
that it's humans looking for him. They probably don't have IR gear
either, which means that it's going to have to be a visual contact.
If he's wearing clothing that's roughly the color of foliage, and a
USAF G-suit is that color, and if he's smart and determined to hide
from them, then he could be, and obviously was, VERY hard to find.

I gotta wonder if anyone will think to remind the Boserbs that they
lied outright when they said they had him. If they can lie, we can
lie, too - so let's promise no more NATO attacks, and as soon as we
get all the peacekeepers back, carpet bomb the SOBs. :-)
455.5Air Show This WeekendSALEM::WINANSThu Jun 08 1995 17:529
Speaking of F16's, It's air show time at Hanscom Field this weekend.

Saturday features in addition to the Thunderbirds, a flyby by the
B2 bomber. Show continues on Sunday, but with some different things
    scheduled.

What I heard on CNN is that the pilot wasn't very far from the where the
plane landed. He survived by sleeping during daylight and moving at night.
Pilots go through a very extensive survival training exercise. Probably
better than the ground troops do.

I remember reading (either yesterday or the day before) that
our military suspected he wasn't captured because they were
picking up radio signals from him in the vicinity of the
    	downed plane.

My questions are, how responsible was our media in reporting
this? If I saw it in the news media, surely the Serbs saw
it too and would know he's near the plane. And, how did the
news media get ahold of that information?

I also recall hearing a statement from one of the freed UN
hostages that the American pilot was in Serb hands, and
apparently safe and in good health.

This pilot will return to the USA and be made a media hero.

As I understand it his plane broke into two pieces. He was located
near one of the two pieces. If he was at 20,000 ft when the bird was
hit, it then broke into two pieces, anyone would have a heck of a time
    finding his exact location.

Seems there are questions about the cause of the downing. The two
planes hung around the area wuite long after being picked up on radar
turning on and off their jamming devices. Some are speculating that
these pilots were playing cat and mouse with the Serbs.

I had heard a report that Serbs knew where the downed pilot was but
were not interested in capturing him. Serbs viewed the succesful
rescue in their interest as it minimizes US public interest in Bosnia

complicated situation and Serbs wanted to end it without giving US an

Previous radio contacts were not certain- they never were sure it was

    ambush.

He was evading, hiding during daylight, and moving at night to get to
someplace where rescuers could get to him. He was also conserving his
radio batteries. He made contact 2:30am Thursday morning with an
overflying F16, they handed him off to AWACS, they got the rescue force
scrambled from the carrier and covering jets from other locales, to him
    within four hours.

He was alone in enemy territory, being sought by armed men, and he kept
his cool, followed his training, used his brains, and did all the right
things to maximize his chances. He still had a smoke cannister (carried
it for six days, used it two minutes before the choppers got to him).
He still had his sidearm (in his hand while running for the chopper.)

It took 5 1/2 days to get his exact location. They were picking
up a signal he trasmitted steadily after first going down; but
when he tried to conserve the batteries they weren't picking up
on it all the time. They wanted to know the exact location if
possible because they expected ground fire coming at them. They
also had to make sure it was O'Grady using the radio and not the
Serbs; fortunately for him a buddy recognized his voice. Once
they were sure they had the location, the Marines were ordered to
    move.

I thought it was pretty terrific to turn on the tube when the
alarm went off this AM in time to see O'Grady returning to Aviano.
His commanding officer said exactly what Paul pointed out; they
pilots have excellent survival training and O'Grady's ability to
keep his head, not panic and remember the training is what enabled
    him to survive.

Gasbag, are you always so clueless? The day before the rescue, the
Marines had NOT had a CONFIRMED contact with the pilot. They had had
several contacts that MIGHT have been from O'Grady. Not until an F-16
pilot who was a buddy of O'Grady confirmed the identity of the voice on
the ground, 2 hours and 46 minutes before the snatch force was

Mike, the Marine colonel and the admiral were both pretty specific in
saying they'd been hearing from a survival radio since O'Grady went
down but that there was a possibility the Boserbs were using it to lure
'Muricans. The first confirmed contact, i.e., the first time they
could be absolutely sure it was O'Grady, came in the predawn hours of
the day of the rescue, when an F-16 from O'Grady's wing overflew the

General Shalikashvili actually said, very carefully, words to the

the parades given Persian Gulf Vets, not all were heroes but all went

My point was that this is a case in which the oath an officer

They may not do survival training at the academy anymore, but not all the
USAF pilots go there. I am sure some survival training must be done later on
when they actually go to flight school. Pilots are too valuable to the
military in terms of money spent on training etc. Us ground pounders were
expendable however.

455.98Not a hero!DECWET::MPETERSONMax OverheadWed Jun 14 1995 14:4519
I don't believe this guy's a hero, at least in the conventional sense of the
word. He was doing his job and he got shot down and he conducted himself as he
was trained to do. The more important lesson here is that most of his collegues
would have come thru this experience as O'Grady did. This is more a tribute
to their training and discipline than to individual heroism.

If we must have our heroes, then let them be selected from the personnel who
volunteered to go to his rescue. They put themselves in harm's way with the
very likly expecation of engagement. Mr. O'Grady, while very aware of the
possibility of danger, launched that morning with the expectation that nothing
untoward would be happening that day.

On an unrelated point: Beetles do not taste good. Many of them excrete a
vinegar-like substance. Fleshy grubs, tho', can be quite tasty.

It isn't practical. A human weighs about the same as 1,000,000
ants, depending on the species, so it takes hundreds to make an
ounce, thousands to make a modest meal. Chitin is not very
nourishing. And our dextrous appendages are ill-suited to ant

Yah, so macho it'll probably get deleted for the big RO.

In the Globe yesterday there was little blurb that he has been
confined, temporarily, to a wheelchair due to foot problems he is
experiencing. Seems he is having problems from having his socks and
boots wet and on for 6 days.

Sounds like trenchfoot. Any WWI Tommy who was a member of the PBI
    could sympathize.
