We bought a second-hand couch from an estate liquidation at an
auction. Years later the fabric underneath the couch that hides
the springs ripped. In trying to patch it, I found some things
that had worked themselves not just under the cushions, but into
the very guts of the couch itself. Pens. Buttons. A little
rubber ball. Most notable was a scrimshaw pocketknife/moneyclip
that had $45 in it. Considering that I paid $25 for the couch,
    	I was rather pleased.

This is an awfully childish thing, but...

Every night, the janitor puts down a big piece of sticky plastic at
the entrance to the media room, to keep people from tracking in
dirt and dust on their shoes. I always get an absurd little bit of
pleasure from seeing my big ol' size 13 bootprints as the first tracks
of the day going in and out of the room.

I guess it's kind of like walking across the backyard just to see your
footprints as the first tracks in the new-fallen snow, or writing
your name in the soft cement of a new sidewalk. There's some
simple pleasure in having made your mark upon the world, no matter
