Heat it first. Do you have a gas range or electric? If gas, just
throw it in the frying pan over the steak, let it heat up for a few
seconds, then tilt the pan over the burner and it'll catch. If you have
an electric range, you have to use a match.

| Totts blanc de noirs is supposed to be the best you can get at that
price range. One to look for is Chateau St Jean blanc de blanc- it's
around $9, but you will probably have to go to a wine store as opposed
to a grocery store. Other labels to look for Maison Deutz and Cordoniu
which are around $10.

| Leetle Poems for Valentine's Day
------------------
<forwards removed>
From Victoria Reggie Kennedy to her husband Sen. Edward Kennedy:
I'll sail with you to oceans blue
I'll fly to islands far
I'll cycle over hill and bridge
But let's not take the car.
From Lorena Bobbitt to John Wayne Bobbitt:
You've made my life a living hell
You've always been a jerk
But I don't think you'll get much meaner
Now that I've sliced off your wiener
From Tonya Harding to Jeff Gillooly:
Because you had no faith in me
to skate and win the gold
You took a whack at Nancy's knee,
the move it was quite bold
But now it seems they're on to us,
and you'll be in the slammer
While I'll be eating Nancy's dust
to boos in Lillehammer.
From Amy Fischer to Joey Buttafucco:
I loved you once and shared your bed
I shot your wife right in the head
And when one day I leave this jail
You and John Wayne Bobbitt will have a lot to talk about.

I responded to Gore's book with cd's of romantic oldies, with
gratifying results. :-)
I looked up Valentine, which dates from third century Roman martyrs.
Apparently, there were more than one, but they are combined to form
the patron saint of lovers. The 2/14 date supplanted some Roman
"love festival" called the Lupercalia. Apparently, the Romans
believed Italian birds chose their mates at this time.

bread, candles, a loving welcome-home after sh****-day at work, and a
nice bottle of wine. Following that she handed me four wrapped
chocolate covered cherry candie things (Cherry Blossoms by Lowney),
each with a little IOU in them. The best I think (that I can share
with you) is for ironing 10 of my shirts. Obviously suprising her by
coming home early on our first anniversary Friday had a spill-over
effect. Better not loose those slips of paper....

* My pet project got stopped at the US level yesterday.
* Two customers insisted on instant-service (sigh!)
* My son got in a little trouble at school yesterday
* I ran out of gas three blocks from home after picking the kid
up from school -- it was *pouring* rain at the time!
* Discovered that my brand-new credit card's magnetic strip is
de-magnetized
* The mouse on my home PC died, and the new mouse I ran out and
bought made the stupid thing *explode* Windows, causing much
headache, frustration, and time-consuming reinstalling, etc.
(happens *every* time I install a new "device" on that &*%$&%
thing)
* Husband worked over 1 hour late, didn't call to say so
* Son dawdled incredibly over his homework, his dinner, etc. turning me
into Wicked Witch of West.
* Lost one of the brand-new pair of sterling silver earrings my son
gave me on Sunday for birthday. (waaaaaaaah!)
The worst Valentine's Day in my history. Bleeaah!!
Only nice thing that happened all day was the really cute
little Valentine teddy bear the little munchkin gave me with the card
yesterday. Thankfully, today has been much, much better!

Excuse me for getting back to the subject 8^).
Mark, if you plan on proposing to your SO this Valentine's Day, here's
a nice little poem guaranteed to melt any female heart of any quality
8^).
Come live with me and be my love,
And we will all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
Woods, or steepy mountain yields.
And we will sit upon the rocks,
Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,
By shallow rivers to whose falls
Melodious birds sing madrigals.
And I will make thee beds of roses
And a thousand fragrant posies,
A cap of flowers, and a kirtle
Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle;
A gown made of the finest wool
Which from our pretty lambs we pull;
Fair lined slippers for the cold,
With buckles of the purest gold;
A belt of straw and ivy buds,
With coral clasps and amber studs:
And if these pleasures may thee move,
Come live with me, and be my love.
The shepherd swains shall dance and sing
For thy delight each May morning:
If these delights thy mind may move,
Then live with me and be my love.
"The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" by Christopher Marlowe.

| I prefer the poetry of William Yeats.... why don't you try
BROWN PENNY
by William Butler Yeats
I WHISPERED, "I am too young,"
And then, "I am old enough";
Wherefore I threw a penny
To find out if I might love.
"Go and love, go and love, young man,
If the lady be young and fair."
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
I am looped in the loops of her hair.
O love is the crooked thing,
There is nobody wise enough
To find out all that is in it,
For he would be thinking of love
Till the stars had run away
And the shadows eaten the moon.
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
One cannot begin it too soon.

Eschew the formula gift and engage the other side of your brain. Be
creative. Do something out of the ordinary. If you don't usually cook,
make her a meal. If you don't usually go out to dinner, take her out to
dinner. It's not the expense, it the amount of thought that goes into
it that makes the difference between an implied "this was another task
on the list" and "you're special." \hth

As to Doc's adding to the family jewels - there's lots of beautiful
natural jewelry. A topax, e.g.
Zircon is crystalline ZrSiO4. Topaz is [AlSiO4 (F,-OH)2]. Though
Topaz is usually thought of as a yellow stone, it can be other
colors. It fades in strong sunlight, however.

How do I love thee ? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,--I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life !--and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Firsted, there's the hype, then the preparation and then the moment

Tradition is a wonderful thing... one that I have is giving
my wife and daughter flowers every Valentine's day... of course,
I give me wife flowers at other times as well, so that's not
particularly special. But since my daughter's been old enough
to, well, basically know better than to eat the flowers, I've
been sending her a bouquet every Valentine's day. I've always
sent them in a cup or mug of some kind. But I've always been
at the mercy of the florist as to what was available for
a cupo or mug, so this year, I purchased a China tea
cup and saucer and brought that to the florist to have an
arrangment made. I think I'll do it that way from now on, as
I can then see to it that she collects a nice set of cups
she can take with her when she marries or otherwise leaves
the nest...

Valentine's gifts don't have
to be just roses and candy
anymore
By Rachel Beck, Associated Press,
02/11/97; 01:15
NEW YORK (AP) - Tired of buying roses
and chocolates for a valentine? How about an
African lion or two nights in a swanky hotel for
$16,000?
While it's easy to cling to Valentine's Day
standards, those willing to explore gifts beyond
the Godiva counter are sure to find some
offbeat offerings to please that special
someone.
``She doesn't eat chocolate and I'm not buying
her a diamond ring,'' said Peter Klein, a
30-something New Yorker. ``Now I'm
looking for something fun, and of course, kind
of romantic.''
Perhaps the Detroit Zoological Society has the
answer. For $25, participants can ``adopt'' a
number of animals, including trumpeter swans,
African lions and bald eagles.
Packages include an adoption certificate, a
photograph of the animal, a fact sheet and a
newsletter. For $50, chocolates and a plush
animal are included.
And if your honey happens to be named Bow,
Arrow, Cupid, Sweetheart or Honey, submit
the name for a free flight on any of the routes
Air South flies.
``People now look for things that are out of the
ordinary and fun, and this fits both of these,''
said Tom Volz, vice president of marketing at
Columbia, S.C.-based Air South, which runs
similar name promotions for Christmas, Easter,
St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving and July 4.
The more self-indulgent may enjoy Hyatt
Hotel's ``Ultimate Romance'' package at the
Park Hyatt Hotel in Washington. For $16,000,
the four-star presidential suite is all yours for
two nights, complete with fireplace,
candle-lighted hot tub and ``unobtrusive
butler.''
Club Med also has a Valentine's deal that lets
one person go half-price for a seven-night stay
at some of its resorts when two people book
together. Inns and spas from Oregon to Maine
are also offering special Valentine's weekend
getaway packages.
For those who prefer simpler gifts, Williams
Sonoma has heart-shaped muffin pans for $36
or chocolate molds for $12, an easy way to
bake a romantic treat.
Looking to add a little spice to the holiday?
Try Brookstone's mechanical massagers. For
$2,595, there's the Panasonic Urban Massage
Recliner that soothes the whole body, and for
the less wealthy, the No Hands neck massager
for $99.
But bucking tradition isn't for everyone and
retailers are betting that lots of heart-shaped
merchandise is bought for Valentine's Day.
A survey by the International Mass Retail
Association found consumers will spend an
average of $30 on Valentine's gifts and 50
percent of its 1,000 respondents ranked candy
and cards as the top gift items.
``A box of candy, he's doing good,'' said Lisa
Schwartz, who eyed some lingerie at Victoria's
Secret in New York. ``A dozen roses, he's
doing a lot better.''

ok guys, you have only 2 more shopping days to get your beloved
a present that will keep you out of the doghouse. What are some of
your ideas for this year?
oh, and ladies, what gift would you most like to receive this
Valentine's Day?

Oh, forget about the gift for a second. Women vary, you know what
yours likes. Think for a second about selecting a "greeting card".
If you go into a large pharmacy or gift shop, you will be astonished
to discover a vast aisle of greeting cards of all sorts. There are
the funny ones. There are the sappy poetry ones. There are the religious
ones. The minimalist, the abstract modern, the "sincere" ones. I find
the ritual of selecting one relaxing but curious. Be prepared for the
push of crowds at these places - the next few days, cards are big business.

| Instead of roses, chocolates, sleazy underthings...... or any of the
other horrendous gifts pushed on people as "necessary" to valentines
day, how about a backrub, cooking a perfect meal, if your partner is
the one who usually cooks, (or having it catered in if your idea of
fine cooking is whatever is in a vending machine and can be nuked)
Playing his or her favorite music at their preferred volume, and
changing the oil if needed on their vehicle?

I suggested the Sole Proprietor to my husband for
Valentine's Day (actually, for the day after), and
he suggested we save it for a night when I can actually
stay awake past 9:00.
Unfortunately, this baby doesn't yet like chocolate, and
I prefer *not* to get flowers on Valentine's Day (I'd rather
get them for "no special reason").
I just hope my husband doesn't get swayed by those stupid
"buy your sweetheart a cellular phone for Valentine's Day"
ads. Blurgh!

I seem to recall that one of the later Roman emperors tried to suppress
marriage, in order to recruit more soldiers. St. Valentine was a priest
who performed secret marriages, got caught, and was executed for it.
Later, when the church was converting pagan holidays, they beatified him
as the Patron Saint of Lovers and replaced an earlier Roman festival of
fertility.
But I may not have the whole story.

Was that a sarcastic remark, or a genuine comment. Although it sounds
like a sex aid or something, it is an aboriginal musical instrument.
It is a long tude of wood that has been hollowed out, and carved. You
place your lips inside the tube an blow, what I can best describe,
raspberries. It makes a strange sound.

Quarter-century later,
Valentine's Day brings
marriage
Associated Press, 02/14/97; 02:17
SALEM, N.H. (AP) - This is a perfect
Valentine's Day story - first-love sweethearts
separated by other lives get married today on
the very spot where they met 25 years ago.
Sandra Vogler and Robert Boutin were both
14 when they met on Valentine's Day on the
sidewalk outside church Sunday school.
Today, 25 years later, they are preparing to be
married in an evening ceremony.
``We were 14 years old and it was 25 years
ago. It was after ... class at Mary Queen of
Peace Church,'' Sandra Vogler of Salem, said.
``I was best friends with his cousin and we met
outside. He found out who I was, we started
dating and we went together for more than two
years while we were students at Salem High.'
Robert Boutin and the then Sandy Sands broke
up, married other people, had four children
each and got divorced.
They got back together in June and got
engaged Dec. 15.
``It's like we're 16 again,'' Vogler said. ``I
drive
to his house and I have a knot in my stomach.''
Vogler is a waitress, Boutin a service
technician.
The ceremony will is small with just two
witnesses and a justice of the peace.
Vogler said because she had been married 17
years and divorced, she had vowed never to
remarry. Then Boutin came back into her life.
She said that although she and Boutin had lived
in the area for 22 years, they had only run into
each other once, in a local store, about six
years ago.
``We were both married at the time and we
both had four children,'' she said. ``We said
`Hi, how are you?' and that was it.''
Vogler said that in June, the same cousin who
introduced them 25 years ago came into the
restaurant where she works and this time the
two women had time to talk.
Vogler learned that Boutin also was single again
and living in neighboring Derry.
``I came home that night, it was June 28, built
up my courage and called Bob,'' Vogler said.
``We talked for three hours.''
She said their first date was dinner and a
concert at Field of Dreams park in Salem. ``I
always considered Bob my first love but I
never knew whether he felt like that,'' Vogler
said. ``Now I know it's mutual.''

I was unsure as to what to get my ex for Valentine's Day. When we were married
Valentine's day was the last of a gift triple play..Christmas, her birthday
near the end of January, then Valentine's day. As one who is not very original
when it comes to gift giving, by the time Feb 14 rolled around I was in a panic
as to what to get, certain that whatever gift I got would disappoint.
And, now that we are dating again, I wasn't sure what to get...we're not
the point of being head over heels in love with each other yet, though
we are enjoying the "getting to know each other again" phase that we are
going through. I wanted to get a card that was somewhere in between
the mushy I love you stuff and the "Happy Valentine's Day to my special
friend" variety.
I wound up getting her a nice floral arrangement which I delivered to her
house yesterday while she was at work and which my son set out for her
this morning. She was pleased.

Welcome to the Anti-Valentine's Day Page!
Remember, Cupid rhymes with Stupid !
Valentine's Day is overrated. Right after Christmas is over, every stupid
department store, drugstore, and convenience place is chock-stocked filled
with lame heart-shaped boxes of candy, mushy cards, and fluffy stuffed
aminals (yes, aminals!) Who wants any of that crap?
the candy just goes to our hips (maybe we should just glue it on instead?
although it's the lesser of the two evils, since at least it tastes good)
and the stuffed animals just sit around and rot on a shelf. when you
finally stop dating that person who gave them to you, they serve as a
horrible reminder of the relationship and the person you are no longer
with. I generally feel too guilty to throw them away, so i end up giving
them to the Goodwill or Salvation Army and hope some poor kid gets some
use out of them.
And if you don't have someone special in your life, all that crap serves
as a reminder that you are ALL ALONE, and no one even cares enough to send
you a card or nuffin'. ('cept maybe mom n dad.) definitely a great holiday
for self-esteem. I wonder how many people commit suicide that week.

I wonder about this Dante fellow. If anyone touched
my truffles, they wouldn't live to tell the tale.

| Excuse me for butting in, but isn't Valentines day just an excuse for
men/women who don't appear to care less about their partner the rest of
the year to think they've done something 'romantic' so they don't have
to bother again for the rest of the year. I love my girlfriend all
year, and I tell her so, no need for token gestures designed to line
the pockets of card and chocolate makers. Valentines day is OK for
people too shy to express their affections, but for long term couples?
What's the point?
Richard.
