Both tast great, when barbequed with a little A1 sauce on the side.
Though, getting the hairs out between your teeth, is very similar to
eating corn on the cob. I have many recipes from my Korean friends, if
anyone is interested. Hope this helps.

I prefer cats, but one thing I like about dogs is, when you've been gone
for a few days they're always excited to see you. After being gone for
a couple days, I get home last night and all my cat seemed to care about
was "are you going to feed me?"

Ah! You need a "catdog"! I have one. He's orange, 23 lbs,
can stretch himself out to about 3 feet, and is extremely
happy to see me when I get home at night. He follows me
around the house to keep and eye on what I'm doing and
sleeps at the foot of the bed every night. Matter of fact,
my two Birmans are "catdogs" too, but not as lively as Red.

No, he's from upstate New York. They grow them larger there.... :-)
He's not fat either. He's just big. Looking at him all the
time, you get used to him, but when we have people over for the
first time, it's funny to hear, "My God that cat is HUGE!" When
he jumps down from the cat tree, the floor shakes :-). While
you have to be attentive to a cat who can stand on his hind legs
and grab his own dinner off the kitchen counter, or give you
a hernia by jumping on your stomach at 5 in the morning, we
love him anyway. :-)

We always called 7-toed cats (2 extra) double-pawed. We had one

Really held his own against dogs.
Some double-pawed cats did sort of have double paws (4 toes, space, 3 toes)
kind of like having 3 thumbs, others just had _big_ paws.
Never heard of a cat with just one extra toe. Two extra toes is common.

Not really. It depends on what you feed them. (And that
goes for any breed.) Feed them supermarket-type dog chow,
and volume-in == volume-out. Give them a quality professional
brand where there is more nutritional value and less bulk fillers,
and their output is greatly reduced.

I would vote for dogs as being the best pet, no matter how well the
litter box is kept cats just seem to leave a bad smell in a house. and
dogs are very versatile, they ussually make good home security pets,
they can obey cammands (which is pleasing to the owner and the pet),
and at times they are a better judge of character than we are.
I have 2 labs, they are great dogs, the black lab is almost 2 and
the yellow lab is just over a year old, mo (the b.l.) doesnt really
bark at people, he does a really low gutteral choppy growl, and that
gets peoples attention real fast. now jo (the y.l.) barks at every
noise when he's in the house, but at the hush command he starts the
growling routine along with mo.

things growing big in upstate NY we are going to develope an ego

If you feed them a high quality diet and keep up with the
output, so to speak, the litterboxes will be no problem at
all. Litter tracking is the biggest problem I have.
The person who owned our house before we bought it had
a dog. I think the dog used to sleep in the kitchen.
I shampooed the carpet in the kitchen 4 times and it
still smelled like wet dog when you came into the
house for 6 months afterwards. You can bury your
face in a cat's fur and there isn't much odor attached
to it. Bury your face in a dog and it smells like,
well, dog. And eventually your whole house smells
like dog. I have never like that smell. Maybe if
you bath your dog regularly it isn't as bad, but,
I think dogs smell much worse than cats do.

Years ago when I was in high school and college, we had two German
Shepherds that weighed about 110 pounds apiece. They were both black
and silver. Best dogs I've ever owned, bar none. They were quite a
tandem, especially when people would cut across our back yard, which
had a fence. They usually saw the error of their ways quickly.
Unfortunately, one happened to attack my girlfriend at the time, and
we had to put him to sleep. Rather sad thing, is that she still has
the scars to this day. He started getting rather cranky in his old age.
If I ever got another dog, it would be another Shepherd.

Well if you really like MID-sized dogs, I suppose a hundred
pounds is OK. ;-)
Our house is becoming a zoo.
Cats - Three. Lucifer, 20 lbs. Oscar, 16 lbs. Inker, 10 lbs.
Dogs - Three or Five depending on your definition. Dude, 165 lbs.
Cleopatra, 130 lbs. Valkyrie, 120 lbs. Amanda, 15 lbs. Sebastian,
20 lbs. (Dude and Cleo are Great Danes, Val is half Dane/half Black
Lab. Amanda and Sebastian are Lhasa Apsos).
And we're thinking about rescuing another Dane. This time a 9 month
old Blue male. I want to complete the set. Dude is a Brindle, Cleo's
a Harlequin, so we need a Blue, a Black and a Fawn. My wife is
underwhelmed by this goal for some reason.

| Dogs, cats, they're all unique and I love 'em both. Current
inventory in our house is 3 cats (2 males at 13 lbs. apiece;
one female at 7 lbs., but she takes no prisoners), 2 mice (one
black, one white; had to segregate them cuz they couldn't get
along), and tank 'o fish.
No dogs, since we don't have the room or the time, but our next-
door neighbors have a big 'ol yellow lab named Chet who's a cupcake.
Border collies are great.
My ultimate pet is a pig. Read about a special breed that only grows
to about 30 lbs. Not those Vietnamese pot-bellied ones. It was bred
for research purposes, I think. Looks like a domestic pig but doesn't
grow to humungous proportions. (Mom must have read "Charlotte's Web"
to me too many times.)
Come to think of it, I'd be pretty happy if my house was like Ace
Ventura's place. In fact, one of the pet mice hops up onto my hand
when I reach into the cage, walks up my arm, and sits on my shoulder under
my hair. He'll sit in my hand and eat, take a drink of water, etc.

if i could, i'd have a dog. not one of them things small enough to
step on...my g-mother has a thing for those...between the pekinese(sp)
and the tea-cup and regular poodles, i don't know what was worse...
but cat piss is disgusting...the place i am in now, the former tenants
had 1 dog, 3 cats, a rabbit and a ferret...and only the dog was known
about by the landlord...and this place was a mess...it stunk to high
heaven when i checked it out...but the neighbor (who i know and told me
about the upcoming vacancy) assured me that the tenants would have to
clean the place before they left...well they did...but all the rugs in
there had to come up...cuz the cats apparently never used the litter
box...and one of them decided he wanted to use the bathroom for his
box...which would have been nice if he had use the toilet, but he
decided to go NEXT to the toilet...my bathroom stunk for about a month
after i moved in...and that was after washing the floor the twice and
scubbing it down once...
now these people have their own house with all those animals...plus the
kittens one of the cats delivered recently...and now that place is a
mess and it's starting to stink already...
most people i have that have cats, their house has a certain 'smell' to
it, letting you know there are felines present. a couple, you'd never
know...
but i'd still rather have my doggie...

| To get cat piss (stain and smell) out of carpets, put a mixture
of table salt and baking soda on the spot. You have to do it
when the spot is relatively fresh. Once it has had a chance
to ferment there, well, someone back there said to burn down the
house -- and they're not far off! For dog urine all you need is
salt. But add some baking soda to it for cats.
First you have to blot up as much as you can get from the spot
with newspaper or paper towels. Then spray with some water and
blot again. Then pour a layer of the salt (with baking soda if
needed) on it. The salt will draw up the rest of the moisture.
Vacuum up when dried.
For other pet "bodily wastes" (vomit, craps) just use straight
baking soda.

The Standard Poodle is not a little dog (well to me they are

little dogs (except to those folks that have a penchant

I like all animals...but my favorite is my Cocker Spaniel, Jason.
He's our best friend. We take a lot of time to make sure he is
properly cared for...groom him daily, take him for walks, make sure
he has fresh water every day before we go to work, etc. etc. etc.
Next month he will be 10 years (our time) old. He's happy, contented,
and so are we with what has been a terrific overall relationship.
We will miss him when he is gone.
Our biggest question right now? Should we get another puppy to ease
the pain/transition of that inevitable event?
We don't know...Does anyone out there have any experience in this?

occasional hairball accident, but no lingering aftereffects. I had a
scratching post right from their kittenhood, so when they started
clawing the furniture I just picked them up and shifted them to the
post. They learned. They still claw my leg when they want attention,

I had a German Short-Haired Pointer and now have a Chocolate
Lab. I do not feel right unless my dog gets one good leash-
less run a day. That means I average over 30 minutes of hiking
per day. Its good for me, but it adds up!
I also have two cats; actually they are my daughters' cats.
My feeling is that cats are one of the most outwardly selfish
creatures on this earth! They are also almost maintenance free.
Meanwhile, my previous and present dogs truly seem to like me
for more than what I do for them. But, man, are they a lot of
work!
I prefer dogs albeit acknowledging that they require more work.
The benefit to me is that they demonstrate love for me more than
cats.

Fabulous cat fact/oddity
When I was on vacation, someone demoed the weirdest cat trick I
have seen for a while. I tried it on Marbot and it worked on him, too,
so it has a 100% success rate for the 3 cats on which I've seen it
done.
Basically, what you do is take a longish light towel, or
scarf, or something like that, and fold it so it's about 6" wide
and use it to bind a cat's abdomen. Wrap it so that it's on
snugly, but not tight, if you know what I mean -- it shouldn't
be on so loosely that it slides around, but it shouldn't be so
tight that the cat complains while you're putting it on (unless
the complaint is just your cat's natural reaction to being treated
in such an OuTrAgEoUs manner) - anyhow, it should go around about
2-3 times, so it won't unroll too fast. You probably need not
pin it or anything.
Put the cat down on its feet and let it go. Every cat
I have seen this done to looks at you with an expression of
surprise and confusion (not fear and anger) and either topples
over and just lies there, or takes a few steps, then topples
over. Sometimes they get up and immediately topple. It's as if
somehow it messes up their sense of balance or something. From
what I know of how cats are built there's nothing down there
that's especially critical, and you're not wrapping it so
tightly that it'd squeeze the diaphragm or anything. It seems
to be harmless -- I kept a close eye on the cats to make sure
they showed no sign of distress. They seem generally puzzled
but alert. I've never left a cat that way for long, mostly
because it's so weird. I *ASSUME* it's harmless; the cat
doesn't act like it's suffocating or anything weird like that.
Any ideas what might be going on? The only thing I
can theorize right now is that somehow it keeps the cats
hips from moving forward, which makes it lose its balance.

Bear in mind that CATS and HORSES have a similarily weird sense of
humor. Has anyone tried this on a horse to see if it's the same. If
it is, perhaps it's just their stubborn refusal to go along with
anything they didn't think of first.
Might just put this question out there...Has anyone tried this on

does not seem to think humans should wash with water. He much prefers

272.141 | 210? THAT'S a doggie! | GMASEC::CLARK | | Sun Feb 05 1995 15:48 | 12 |
| .133 One pound? That's very interesting considering the size of them
doggies. How many pups to a litter? A friend has an English Bull
Mastiff. This is a 210 lb. puppy. Scratch his ears and neck and you
have a friend for sure. When he lays his head on your leg it's similar
in size to a basketball with ears. If you are standing and talking and
he wants your attention he just walks up and leans against you. And it
works! She mentioned that they usually have two pups to a litter - at
close to 9 lbs. each. That's really got to be something to see. This
doggie at 210 is a lot smaller than his "daddy" who was 265. Best of
all is to see him with the long-haired dachshund which is the other dog
in the house. And they are just as jealous of each other as two little
kids. Quite a pair to see in action.

A pound at birth and by 8 weeks they stand close to a foot high,
Most of which is LEGS. ;-)

Like all the breeds it varies. Dude's litter was 6, we're waiting
to see what Hanna produces for the "Bravo" litter (we'll know
in a few days).

I live in an apt with a long hallway right outside my door..my cat has become
increasingly interested in dashing out the door evertime I open it, and I've
had to become creative at preventing these daring escapes..one of which came
this morning as I had to come back to my apt to get some (clean) litter to
help get me out of the pile of snow in which I was stuck..she dashed out the
door and up the stairs to the next level..
There are 2 doors leading in to the apt, both of which are off of the same
hall and enter my kitchen..what I've started doing when I come back to
the apt is playing with the door knob on the little used door (she hasn't
yet caught on to the fact that the pile of stuff in front of the door would
prevent me from opening it), waiting a few seconds and then quickly coming
in the other door..its only a matter of time before that little ruse no longer
works.

| For the first time in thirty years there are no cats, dogs, or kids in
the house and as I used to talk to the animals a lot when I was alone i
really miss them. We always try to get both cats and dogs when they are
young but as our last German Shepherd was 12 when she died our tabby
did not buy the farm until she was sixteen so she had to get used to a
new dog that "followed" my daughter home. This one I am afraid did not last
long as it was not too young and suffered from a heart problem. I must
admit I like most animals and we will be getting both a kitten and a
puppy in the spring. And yes, before any-one asks, we did try to find
out who owned the dog but no-one ever claimed her.

272.146 | License them cats | GMASEC::CLARK | | Tue Feb 07 1995 21:26 | 7 |
| How come dogs have to be licensed but cats do not? Cats being nocturnal
critters are much more likely to come in contact with a rabid wild
animal than are dogs as most states now have leash laws to keep the
doggies under control. I am surprised more dog owners haven't raised
a big ruckus over this. Talk about discrimination.

272.153 | You don't mess with this breed! | DECLNE::REESE | ToreDown,I'mAlmostLevelW/theGround | Fri Feb 10 1995 13:59 | 58 |
| Thought I'd put this here rather than the OJ topic.
While picking up my fuzz-butts at the vet yesterday I came up
close and (almost) personal with 2 Akitas. These animals are
HUGE!!! Then I found out they were 10 month old pups, unbelievable!!
The male dog was already 110 lbs. and is expected to fall betwen
140 to 160 lbs. at full growth; the female is expected to hit 120 lbs.
These dogs are awesome!!
Needless to say we got around to talking about all the attention
being put on Akitas. The man and his son breed and train guard and
attack dogs (there is a difference). This guy has worked over 25
years in the business, primarily with Shepherds, Rottweilers and
Dobies until about 10 years ago when the Akita started generating
attention.
Both he and his son have taken numerous animal behavior courses over
the years. It's his opinion (and everyone seems to have one) that
Kato the Akita probably was familiar with whoever killed Nicole.
He said no one has indicated that Nicole's dog had received attack
training (attack dogs are trained to jump into action with a voice
command given by the primary handler). If Nicole was grabbed from
behind and her throat cut before she could call out, this would con-
fuse an attack dog. He said these breeds typically equate the human
family as being their pack. He said an Akita without attack training
typically will leap to the defense of anyone in their pack if they
did not recognize the attacker. If the dog recognized the attacker
and the attacker spoke the dog's name, it would definitely baffle the
dog. Since the dog would not regard Ron Goldman as part of his pack,
he probably wouldn't attempt to leap between Goldman and the perp;
but the Akita probably *would* bark loudly and continuously.
He did say if anyone tried to hurt/strike/engage the dog in a fight,
the dog would definitely fight back....furiously. If the dog didn't
recognize the perp, the dog would almost surely go for the arm that
might be making sudden, swift, slashing movements. He said the
agitation described by Schwab and Bosteppe is very consistent with
an Akita who still feels a compulsion to help its master/mistress.
The guy pointed out that (in his opinion), not too many men would
stay in an area where one of these dogs is loose, unless the man/men
knew the dog and were confident they could control it.
The man said these dogs have such a tremendous instinct to protect
their pack leader that he prefers NOT to sell an Akita into a family
that has young children. He did say an Akita pup (8-10 weeks old)
might assimilate into a family with small children (the pup would
view the children as one of its siblings). He said it takes quite
a while to train a good guard or attack dog, thus the dog is no
longer a young pup when it's sold.
This guy said as soon as detailed reports started coming in about
the murders he said to his wife and son "that dog knows the killer".
The man actually went into a lot more detail; it was a fascinating
conversation.

272.167 | Cats are ok, but Dogs are Best! | TROOA::TRP109::Chris | if not now, when? | Thu Feb 23 1995 11:41 | 30 |
| Our family has always had both cats and dogs and I couldn't imagine living
in a home without any pets. However, if I could only choose one or the
other, I would definitely keep the dogs. It doesn't matter how bad a day
I've had... the sight of my "Taz" waiting at the front window for me to get
home always brings a smile to my face. Dad says she goes over to the window
around 5:00 and won't budge until I walk in ( I feel bad those nights I
don't come home right away!) When she sees me, she jumps up and her whole
body starts wiggling with the weight of her tail swinging - quite the ego
boost! Our other dog is older and wiser. She does what she wants until she
hears you come in the front door, but then she has to tear around the house
until she can find something to bring you as a present. Usually it's one of
their toys, but if not, a shoe or sock or anything she can put in her mouth
will do. She also knows how to pass me the tv remote when I'm really being
a couch potato! Dogs give unconditional love and I have a feeling that the
cats only love us because we happen to feed them. Oh sure, they'll start to
purr if you scratch their ears, but they only pay attention to you if they
feel like it. You may remember I was lamenting a month or so ago about
whether or not this "pup" of mine would ever get trained. Well, she is 13
months old now and weighs about 150 lbs. I think the 1 year mark was the
turning point, because she has had the run of the house for over a month and
so far (fingers crossed) no damage. She still barks at strangers but I
guess if that's the worst we have to put up with, I can live with it. Taz
is really affectinate and loves to give hugs by jumping up and putting her
front paws on my shoulders and bury her face in my neck. It's funny how we
will change our lives to accommodate the dogs - in fact I'm planning on
buying my 1st home this fall and, although I could afford a condo or
townhouse on my own, the thought of leaving my dog with my Dad is
unthinkable, so instead I will put myself into massive debt to obtain a
small bunagalow with a yard *and* a basement apartment that I can hopefully
keep rented out.

pondering the change in geography (what's with the white stuff?), a

roaring and scraping.
The screen door was closed. In a panic, Zoe leapt up and clung to the
middle of the door (where the window insert fits), begging me with wild
eyes to LET ME IN LET ME IN LET ME IN. Then she took off and hid

| Week of Wonders for Pelle, our dog.
On Tuesday it was raining as we want for the night walk. Me encountered
a person wearing a cape, the cape hanging down to the knees. Pelle,
curious and always eager to great everyone, who pays attention,
"look what I nice dog I am" approaches the caped person. But then -
shock! horror!
A person with no arms ?!
He lets (Pelle) lets out a bark and ducks away. :-)
Yesterday evening, it was (surprise) darkest night as we went for the
night walk. This time we encounterd a person with almost black skin.
We have met not-white-skinned people before, but that was at daytime.
Pelle, again approaches curiously. And then (this time from greater
distance than the day before):
Shock! Horror!
A person with no head ?!
I was amused.
It was nice to see Pelle's relief, when the invisible head started to
smoothly talk to him. That's where dog's are superior to humans. They
may suffer from xenophobia, but they come over it very quickly.

so this morning before I left I decided that they would be given a

#1 daughter brought hers back home from Louisiana a coupla weeks ago.
Cat is about 8-9 months old, just neutered about two months ago [she
(spade) her (catface)]. Adopted as an abandoned kitten at age 3-4 weeks
by my kiddo.
When I visited in Louisiana, the cat hissed at me every time it saw me,
tried to attack me whenever possible, and left tracks on my arms from
claws and teeth.
Now that it's a "house guest" in my abode for the summer, the cat hisses
at me every time it sees me, tries to attack me whenever possible, and
leaves tracks in my arms from claws and teeth. And has a sandbox taking
up a few feet of floor space in the downstairs john.
Every house cat I've ever owned in the past (with the exception of one
who suffered a heart attack while a vet was attempting to sedate her for
treatment of ear mites) has basically turned into a docile ball of fluff
after being altered. What's with this one that it thinks I'm a major
pin cushion?

My little sister lives in Hendon, Sunderland, which is almost
Newcastle. Their guard cat, Table (so called because he has four legs)
was recently hit by a train and killed. There's no point to this story
other than the minor coincidences of Newcastle, dead pets, and the
basenote being about cats. But it does reinforce your point about cats
being stupid enough to play chicken with a train.

NO THANK YOU
No I do not want a kitten,
No cute, cuddly kitty-poo,
No more long hair in my cornflakes,
No more midnight meowing mews.
No more scratchin', snarlin', spitters,
No more sofas clawed to shreds,
No more smell of kitty litter,
No more mousies in my bed.
No I will not take that kitten--
I've had lice and I've had fleas,
I've been scratched and sprayed and bitten,
I've developed allergies.
If you've got an ape, I'll take him,
If you have a lion, that's fine,
If you brought some walking bacon,
Leave him here, I'll treat him fine.
I have room for mice and gerbils,
I have beds for boars and bats,
But please, PLEASE, take away that kitten--
Quick--'fore it becomes a cat.
Well...it IS kind of cute at that.
(It's accompanied by this hysterical drawing of a man drowning in a sea
of hundreds of cats and kittens, as this hand reaches out with another
little one for him)

It was on yesterday's TV news. It shows many dogs owners go to
hotel and led their beloved dogs right into room and says "which
bed you want?". The big dogs jump right into the nice comfortable
bed. Would you like to be the next hotel guest laying on the
same bed previous occupied by the dogs?

DISNEY showed "The Cat from Outer Space" last night. If dogs were
better, the title would have been different.

Sure, but I would be assuming that the linens would have been changed
between guests :-)

Based on a news report I saw a couple of months back, this might be
an optimistic assumption.

Not a great assumption.
When Mike Tyson was first accused of rape, police took the bedspread
from the hotel room. They had to sort out over 300 "samples" to find
Tyson's.
And this was at a high class hotel.

I always check if there is hair on linen before saying 'ok'.
One time I caught it dirty and I asked to change room.
By I always assume the bed spread is dirty.
