| | Roadrunner/Coyote are classic.
I also like Sylvester (especially with the aussie mice).
Of the current cartoons in production, Eek the Cat is probably my favorite
(though Darkwing Duck can be very funny as can be Aladdin). The Tick is
strange but very funny if only if you pay attention.
For serious cartoons, the old Johnny Quest (though now matter how politically
incorrect they may be now) were great. (The one with the energy monster gave
me nightmares which I first it way back when.)
For today, Phantom 2040 is pretty good as is the current Batman incarnation.
Phantom 2040 has pretty well developed characters who have imperfections.
Plus none of the characters are of the "stupid" variety.
Mighty Max is also one of the better ones (I like it because it showcases a
kid that uses his brain to save himself, his sidekicks, and the world).

| | Kimba the white Lion and Speed Racer are two japanese cartoons from the
late 60's early 70s; at least, that's when they were imported here.
Speed drove the Mach 5, an amazing race car built and maintained by his
father, with great gadgets. Kimba is considered by many, many japanese
artists to have been an obvious source of inspiration for Walt Disney's
The Lion King, though Disney denies it; the published comparisons I've
seen do call out some amazing similarities and I think Disney should
dig itself out of a hole bigger than Intel's and credit the creator of
Kimba quickly; there's a backlash already underway in Japan from their
graceless current reaction against the comparison, which is in the form
of a letter signed by thousands of Japanese artists.

I'm enjoying some of the new Nickelodeon features; Rug Rats is
particularly great. and a few years ago the Stunt Dogs were a
    sly bit of fun, too.

| | "Jungle Tatei" is the approximate name in English for the Japanese
production which was referred to earlier by the name it was marketed
under in the US decades ago as "Kimba the White Lion". This article
was written for an online news service in Japan. The following note
will contain the text of the latter sent to Disney.

    DougO
    -----
    Do you know about copyrights?
    Machiko Satonaka (cartoonist)
Watching the ad scenes from "The Lion King" on TV while the film was
under production, I felt that it resembled "Jungle Taitei" somewhat.
However, I believed that there was no way that a production no less
than Disney would do such a thing. The reason is that I have learned
much from Disney Productions concerning protection of copyrights.
So I was quite shocked to see the finished "Lion King"
The animated version of "Jungle Taitei" was aired in America in the
late '60s. The Title at that time was, "Kimba the white lion".
Japanese are familiar with the name of the hero as "Leo", but in
America it is "Kimba" The name of the hero in "The Lion King" is
    "Simba"
The coloring scheme for the lion who plays the enemy role is the same,
as well. Working under that lion is a hyena. a bird is the speaker.
Not only that, the setting is not in the savanna where lions generally
live, but in a rocky area, and the carnivorous characters get their
animal protein from eating bugs..... Can all of this be coincidence?
Tedzuka Productions released a comment concerning this issue, saying
that "The story is different, so we cannot say that it is plagiarism".
This is typical Japanese modesty and a virtue. However, on the other
hand, Disney's comments that "We have never seen 'Jungle Taitei' nor
have we been influenced by it", or "There are always people who get
upset over these sort of things," caused me to doubt their integrity.
I am only one fan, and one Japanese who is proud of Japanese cartoons.
I do not want to go beyond what Tedzuka Production is doing and
register an official complaint. I wanted to send a message to Disney,
that at the least a comment stating "With respect to Osamu Tedzuka's
'Jungle Taitei'" would have been appreciated. When I sent a letter and
signatures to Buena Vista International's Vice President Hillary Clark
on August 20, I had 489 signatures. The number of signatures has since
increased, and on September 22nd was at 1126 signatures. This is a
small movement, but the appeal is from the heart.

| 215.36 | letter to Disney studios | SX4GTO::OLSON | Doug Olson, SDSC West, Palo Alto | Tue Dec 27 1994 15:18 | 64 |
| | An open letter from Machiko Satonaka
    Dear Sirs,
The attached list of signees are only a fraction of the people you have
offended with your recent production that mirrors Osamu Tezuka's 40
year old "Jungle Emperor" comic book and the 1966 "Kimba the White
Lion" American TV animated stories. In fact , the doubts about the
close similarities between the works began within the American cartoon
    community.
To Japanese Mr.Tezuka's works are a national legacy. Therefore, the
respect and admiration we Japanese felt for Disney Co. is severely
diminished. It is not possible to explain the damage inflicted upon
our love of this aspect of Japanese culture.
All Japanese admired Walt Disney. I personally thank him for teaching
me how writers should keep and protect their own rights and
copyrights. Therefore, it is very disappointing to feel doubt about
your "Lion King" movie as it is presented today.
As I said in my interview with Asahi News, Tokyo News, Tokyo News,
Nikkan Gendai and Mainichi Japanese newspapers, I think the works are
so similar, it cannot be co-incidental. The International Herald
Tribune reported this fact along with the San Francisco Chronicle,
Nikkan Sports, Weekly Asahi and the Sankei News.
The basic story of a Prince cast out to return as the hero King after
his father is killed, is only the beginning of a long list parallels.
There is the eye-scarred, black maned villainous Uncle backed by
hyenas, the chattering bird friend, the wise baboon, the promotional
shot of the jutting rock, the father lion in the clouds talking to his
son, the stony wilderness habitat, insect eating carnivores, even the
names Kimba and Simba are strikingly similar. I don't need to go on.
No one is claiming the stories are identical.
However, when my observations first reached Disney I was told abruptly,
"Disney has never heard of 'Jungle Emperor' or 'Kimba, the White Lion'".
As I said on my interview with CNN, it is with sadness and regret that
we are forced to write this letter. I feel that Mr.Tezuka's works
should live as property of the Japanese people. It is not fair to
dishonour the value, repsect and importance that the "Jungle Emperor"
    has for them.
I also believe that Tezuka Productions' conciliatory stance is a
typical Japanese response:avoid an embarrassing confrontation at any
    cost.
At least a sub-title to pay homage to Osamu Tezuka or a few lines
paying respect to the origin of the story should be included. If these
lines were to appear at the beginning of the movie then surely both
Walt Disney and Osamu Tezuka would feel satisfaction.
    Yours Truly,
    Machiko Satonaka.

`Ren and Stimpy' did not get banned. At least, not by the gov't.
Most TV stations elected not to broadcast the show, though it *was*
available on MuchMusic (our equivalent of MTV).

I also liked some other cartoon, about a family (kinda prehistoric, but they

a bird who'd fly the family members about... the cartoon was done by the same
people as space ghost, and it was called.... Dang! "The H????????" I think

| | Just recently bought the "Best of Harry Nilsson" CD (Everybody's Talkin,
Sleep Late my Lady Friend, Coconut... lots of great stuff) and one of the
songs he wrote was "Me and My Arrow" which reminded me of one of my all time
favourite animated shows - "The Point". Remember Ooblie (?) and his dog,
Arrow..... "me and my Arrow, straighter than narrow..." It was about a town
where everybody had a pointed head, all the buildings had a point, his dog
had pointy ears and a pointy nose but this poor little boy was an outcast
because his head was round. He tried to hide it with a big pointy hat, but
it was no good, and so he took off. I think he travelled to someplace
called the "Pointless Forest". Anyhow, he goes through a series of
adventures and the story ends with victory - I won't give it away in case
anybody missed it :*)

| | And give me Harry's original "I can't live if living is without you"
over that horrible bleeting whine that passes for singing out of the
mouth of a certain "singer" about whom the only nice thing her fans
can ever think to say is "but she's good looking". WTF cares. And
whoever did the instrumental arrangement should be shot. Absolutely
NO sense of drama around that wonderful chorus. I miss Harry. Harry
    was a genius.

"Think about your Troubles" was another great song.
I miss Harry too, and I'm another who fails to see why the no-talent did a
cover of what was a perfectly wonderful song that didn't NEED to get a cover.

    Animaniacs has some great moments.
One of my favorites is from "Pinky and the Brain"
(Story of two mice [one a genius] trying to take over the world)

(This has a lot of application to engineering.)

Pinky make a suggestion on how to take over the world

use a plan that would Work!"

| | I've only seen a few Animaniacs cartoons, but I've been very
impressed. It's exactly what you'd have expected the old Warner
Brothers cartoons to have become by the 1990's, if the previous
thirty or so years of precious little and/or cheap output hadn't
    happened.

Great writing (works for kids and adults), art (nice old-style
backgrounds), music (it's got that old WB sound), and so on.
I wish I had time to catch more of these. A few of them are
    available on videocassette.

I think this is one of those shows that goes mostly unnoticed
while it's contemporary, and then twenty years later everyone
"discovers" it, and it becomes a cult classic.

I don't know. It has that prime slot just before Power Rangers.
I would predict a lot of kids watch it. It should be on after the
rangers, so adults could catch it too.
