No sign of winter up here yet.  In fact I think I heard on the radio this 
morning that we will come very close to setting a new record high.  Love it!
I don't care if I never see snow all winter... well maybe only for a two 
period around Christmas/New Years.

    its snowing like crazy just west of here. ND has had blizzard warnings
    out most of the night. unlike the east coast they don't issue blizzard
    or serious snow warnings out here until it really is serious - 40+mph
    winds, a foot of snow or more, and wind chills in the -40 to -50 range.

Spoke to friends in Fairbanks last night.  They've got lots of snow already.
Supposed to go to -20�F tonight.  I told them I've still got tomatoes in

    had the mildest fall since 1931 our skin and blood is still to thin.

	It was snowing at lunch in Hudson! I hope it doesn't do that again

    48 and sunny here in mini soda today. me an the boys are thinking about

    I was just up in the White Mtns of NH and there was very little snow. 
    Friday night it even got above freezing and then snowed a little but
    nothing worth mentioning really.  This is amazingly late to not have
    snow on the mountain tops up there.
    At least with the snow tonight there will be ground cover.

    It has been such a warm and dry fall here in NH this year.  One can
    only hope that in Feb when the upper currents shift it will bring us
    back to a more normal winter here in the NE. But some how I doubt it.

    It's that odd time of year, when I have to whack the ice off the seat
    of the bike on the way to work, and ride home in 60 degree sunshine...

    Newark, N.J. had the warmest temps on record for the month of November
    at 52 degrees (the mean) and this weekend is to be in the 60`s. I love
    it....

    I just looked at the thermometer and it's 20 degrees.
    If you happen to be thinking about working from home;  I have a window
    in my office open about 7 inches (open all night) and it's comfortable
    with just a t-shirt and jeans on.

    have to watchit, soon the English will be running around with no clothes

    you can get that weather report in two ways:
    
    1.  the preferred way is to use http://www.bxb.dec.com/weather-BOS.txt
        on the web.
    
    2.  a less desirable alternative, the very volume of which is causing
        work slowdowns on riscee, is to send an empty mail message to
        riscee::weather.  the maintainers ask that you do this only once a

    Amature night hit last night.  Nice greasy roads with cars all sideways
    on the smallest of grades.  20 minute drive home turned into almost a
    two hours drive through bumper to bumper Caliphs, and others from
    warmer clime's.  Sand trucks caught in the traffic jams.
    
    Sometimes I think no one should be granted a license in Colorado until
    they take a snow driving course, so they no the trick to moving and
    stopping on icy roads.

    Well it seems some of them think that the harder you push the
    accelerator on ice the faster you will go.  They have it half right, as

    	until 5:30, and got home in a half hour instead of their usual

    	The multitude of cars lining the medians and curbs -- so cold, so
    	dark, so snow/ice-covered, some crumpled, many in awkward positions
    	-- lay like dead soldiers after a terrible battle in silent 
    	testimony to the carnage of the previous two hours.

    when I left the snow had just started.  It was amazing at how quickly
    it iced up.  Had I been in a place where I could have gotten off the
    road, believe me I would have waited until 7:00 or so, once things had

12th of December and the temp has been fluctuating between 9�F and 11�F
ever since I got home around 1800. Took three hours to bring the inside
temp from 59� to 70� with the woodstove.

I hate winter.

    They had a fire alarm jobby, here this morning and the evacuees 
    (which includes moi) had to stand outside in the ridiculous 
    heat for half an hour, it was 'orrible.
    
    I prefered doing this in the rain and cold back home, much better.

I have a shiny-new pick-em-up truck this year. The engine has a built in 
heater that I plug into 110V at night. this AM even though the temp was 10
degrees F. I had immediate heat. the coolant stays warm all night
by the time I'd driven a bout two miles the engine was at full operating temp
but _THERE WAS HEAT_ from the moment I started it.

6.4�F was the low last night at home.

Those heaters are the cat's PJ's, Amos. I used to have one in a 65 Rambler
and I never worried about being uncomfortable when I left in the AM. Only
when coming home in the PM, as I hadn't access to 110VAC during the day
when it was parked.

The one I had in my Rambler was an add on. You sliced into your heater hose
and stuck this thing into the two ends, added some clamps, and that was
about it. Kinda like a leetle electric perkylater.

    my father alluz used to get his cars fitted with a thing called a
    headbolt heater - you removed one of the bolts securing the cylinder
    head and mounted the heater there.  worked really well.

The other possibilities are
dip-stick
oil-pan drain plug (IMHO this needs to be removed so often it could get 
                   damaged)
a plate for under the battery (only keeps the bat warm but adds "zip" :-})
Transmission-plug heater

BTW in Northern Canada factories and offices have parking places with
electric outlets in front of each car. A worker benefit.
In some cities in Alaska there are parking-meter ype things on the streets
you pay $.25 for xx minutes of electricity and parking space.

    i doubt it dan. for a year round climate, the springs wins out over
    atlanta. your long, very warm, and especially humid summers are damn
    near insufferable. dewpoints nearing 75-80 are the norm. MN gets the
    worst of both heat/humidty and cold/dry. while the springs' weather can
    change suddenly and dramatically, the location ensures a generally
    comfortable summer without the need of an AC, and relatively
    comfortable winters. in most years, you can also play golf in the
    springs every month of the year.

      What a winter it has been, for the most part we have ha no snow to

    You will be getting the same storm we are supposed to get today.  They
    say up to 8" here, but since they missed the boat so badly last week
    (no accumulation of snow, some freezing rain until early afternoon,
    high in the 40's....we ended up with 4-5" of snow, 1/2" of ice, and it
    never got above 30), I have no idea what to expect.  Maybe 2' this time
    around, maybe nothing.  8^)
    
    So much for accuracy in weather forcasting.

    Well, the snow has stopped.  My, what a huge snowstorm...we got a whole
    .06" of snow (+/- .04"  8^) ).  
    
    No one seems to have noticed this fact, though.  My lunch trip to
    Kroger was...interesting.  Carts lined up in every isle, all full of
    groceries.  Looks like these folk are expecting to be snowed in for a
    while.  A lady in the deli (where I purchased my lunch...luckily there
    was no real line there) said they had been super-busy since 6am this
    morning.  
    
    Keep in mind that this is Blue Ash, a small (but pricey) area north of
    the city.  There is no way you can be very far from a store that sells
    some form of groceries. 
    
    I guess even the mention of snow triggers some instinctive shopping
    expedition.  Personally, I'd rather do my shopping after the storm has
    dumped about a foot of snow...you walk in, grab your grub, then wheel
    your load to one of the OPEN checkout registers- no traffic, no wait,
    and pleasant shopping conditions (empty store).
    
    Oh well, if the unimaginable happens (that it actually snows so much I
    can't get my old Jetta out on the road), I can stretch my two boxes of
    speghetti and bottles of sauce out for a week if I have to, though my
    bottled water is getting low (water is awful in my area) 8^).

    That's what I'm afraid of...I opened the thing up last night and there's
 a bag of bolts, nuts (!), fasteners and other doodads that I'm sure will

    From listening to the local weather talking heads, you'd think that
    snow in New England is a novelty.  Sheesh, hint of snow and they're
    already closing schools, putting the sandbags on the seawall and
    sending viewers to the grocery and hardware stores like lemmings.

    is getting darker.  Of course, it always does that this time of
    day...at least in the winter.  8^)

    It's snowing like CRAZY!  I can barely see the end of the parking lot
    (from my 'lofty' 2nd floor window).  Must have just started...I turned
    around to lock up my desk and there it was.  Cars are getting covered
    at a pretty good clip.
    
    Guess they didn't miss the boat entirely on this one.

 Stopped at the grocery store on the way home (approx 6PM)..parking lot jammed,
 the store itself was mobbed, with the lines to checkstands winding around
 the store (a large Shaw's), shopping carts loaded, people running around
 frantically.  I grabbed my 15 items (one of which was 6 cans of cat food :-)
 and headed for the 14 items or less line (which I discovered are now 10
 items or less lines) and got out.  Unfortunately I discovered upon
 arriving home that I forgot a thing or 2 and headed back out..8:30PM
 and it was still packed..geesh..

    morning, but now there's TONS and it's snowing heavily.

    Yeah, but it's the perfect reason to stay inside, cozy-like, and not

    in the Jeep later today.)
    
    Especially when Channels 4, 5, and 7 are determined to give
    nanosecond-by-nanosecond details.
    
    Ironically, Chelmsford decided to cancel the Winter Carnival that

    Reminds me of the first time I pulled a "telepresence" stunt on anyone. 
    I was traveling in FL in the early 1970s during the early daze of the
    ARPAnet, with a portable TI700-series modem-equipped terminal.  I had
    even managed to "score" one of the more precious resources in those
    net-times:  a TIP dialin number for the 'Net within not-too-many-
    dollars-per-hour-to-put-on-an-expense-account of my parents' condo in
    West Palm.  So there I am, having dragged the extension phone out to
    their back patio under a palm tree on a beautiful day in February not
    unlike this one, typing my brains out, when I get an EMail from a BBN
    friend of mine, to the effect of "Hey DAN, where the HECK are you?  You
    aren't in your office...?  We're all snowbound here at the Cambridge
    HQ, we see you're on the machine, most of the phones here are dead, so
    we figure you aren't logged in from home.  A bunch of us are going to
    slog out to the rotary for a pizza...?"
    
    So I got to practice my electronic grins and replied "Ha HA, Deb, you
    only THINK that I'm snowbound with the rest of you no-life losers; as
    it happens, I'm sitting here under a palm-tree in Florida...  Nyah-
    Nyahhh!!!"
    
    What a great moment...
    
    But today wot am I but a burned-out hulk, surrounded not by gentle
    zephyrs & palm fronds & margaritas, but by Massachusetts snowdrifts.

Well, that wasn't so bad now, was it?

something about "front-end loader" and "busted hydraulic" . . . 

  Coulda been worse...I went out and dug my car out last night...didn't take 
  much.  Now I wish they'd come plow the parking lot.

    Ok, so I was wrong.  We did get snow.  But it wasn't that
    bad really.  About 12" or so.  Going to the grocery store at
    noon on Saturday was the best idea we had.  No lines (Ford
    F250 4x4) :-).  It was a nice excuse to spend a week-end not
    doing much of anything...

    We ended up with around 7" of snow...got most of it in the first hour
    of two, then it let up.  Judging by car coating, we got 3" in the first
    1/2 hour to 45 minutes.  Pretty heavy for these parts.
    
    Now, it's just cold.  Down to 3 this morning, wind chill of -15 to -30. 
    All is not lost, though, we shall reach such lofty temporatures as
    20-22 for today's high.   O'joy...a veritable heat-wave.
    
    It was fun working on the car yesterday (luckily just a simple job of
    tightening the alternator belt).  It only took my 3 or 4 trips inside
    to warm up my hands.  8^)  I hate wind in the winter.

    AM not counting wind chill. We (northwest New Jersey) should get up to
    15 degrees.

 Got stuck in a parking spot in my apt complex..fortunately a couple neighbors

    I went out Sunday morning and sunk into the snow up to my knees.  Yes,
    I have short legs, but...
    
    Shoveled for 3-1/2 hours and managed to clear a path jussssssst wide
    enough for my car to back out if in 4WD Low.
    
    Woke up this morning with no water upstairs.  Something tells me the
    bathroom has no insulation, because there are hunks of ice in it from
    yesterday afternoon's shower 8^p.
    
    I'm at home, waiting for the plumber.  I hope he doesn't mind that I
    haven't showered.

    We got a bit over a foot where I live (just south of the NH border) and
    then it turned to an icy mix, then to rain. They did an absolutely
    HORRIBLE job of plowing our street. They plowed about 4' away from the
    curb. Since the forecast was for plunging temperatures, I spent the
    evening digging through that stuff to make sure my mailbox was all
    cleared out ... had to get it done before it froze. 
    
    Then, of course, the snowplow came by at about 2:00 in the morning and
    pushed it all back ... buried the mailbox ... it froze ... it sucked.
    Buried the end of my driveway too, of course.
    
    WHY did I ever leave Santa Barbara?
    
    
    

	Well it only got up to 62 here over the weekend. I actually had
	to wear a long-sleeved shirt while walking the dogs and was almost
	sunburned when I got home.

Just heard... it's so cold in Boston right now, that the flashers on

    I don't know if any of ya'll remember all those notes about snow
    and the guy driving the snowplow that circulated last winter.  I edited
    one for my friend's Mom who lives in Salem, N.H.  She was out shoveling
    over the weekend and when she took a break, she said she got out my
    card and re-read the note I sent her. 
    
    Even though she's POSITIVE the guy who drives the snowplow IS hiding
    around the corner, she decided to go back out and finish the job :-)
    She's also promised to shoot him :-)
    
    

    
    Pipes fixed.  Big hole in ceiling over washer.  Plumber says no
    insulation around dormer and between first floor ceiling/second floor.
    No wonder there were icecubes in my tub this morning.
    
    Bill for plumber = minimal.  Bill for construction that will be needed
    to insulate bathroom = I don't want to know.  Bill for oil heat since
    plumber suggested I keep heat at 70 until it's fixed = again, I don't
    want to know.
    
    Oh well.  This is an experience that everyone should have once in their
    life, but honestly, once is plenty 8^).

  Anybody out there who watches the Weather Channel keeping track of how many 
  times "lake effect" snow is mentioned?

    A dormer is a partially/totally raised roof over the main house. My
    house has a half dormer and the other half not raised is storage space.

    See, the saltbox look makes all rooms on the second floor back of the
    house  have a slanted wall.  The dormer sticks out so you have a regular 
    room there.  I just have the one dormer although there are 3 rooms on the 
    back of the house.  The slanted wall is hidden in my walk-in closets in
    the master bedroom and is along one wall in the guest bedroom.

    sleeping.  they themselves derived from a kind of house that was
    called, after its english predecessors, a hall.  it had a centered
    front door that opened into the larger of two rooms on the first
    storey.  there was a ladder for access to the loft.

    This last is the true "saltbox" shape, named after the salt boxes used
    on wealthy people's dining tables; the longer, rear roof represents the
    lid, which was hinged at the top.
    
    After the saltbox shape developed, the way to get more room upstairs
    without putting on a full second storey, was to punch out a piece of
    roof and install a dormer.  these dormers were usually only the width
    of a window, and their primary purpose was more for lighting than for
    space.

I think the driving force is not so much expense
as it is Olde Newe Englande Chahm.

    And if the addition is larger than for just windows for light but
    for added space in either the front or the back of the roof, then
    it is called a FULL SHED DORMER!

At one time long ago property taxes on a building in Massachusetts were
determined by the number of stories the building was, but only the stories to
the bottom of the roof line were counted.  Thus the popularity of house styles
that had livable space above the roof line (saltboxes, capes, mansard roof),
this space wasn't taxed. 

Also heard that buildings in Boston often had upper floors removed if not
needed, so I guess this tax was rather steep to make that worth the bother.

    Isn't the "saltbox" much like the Cape Cod style of house?  I have
    what's called a Cape in Bowie and we have plans on adding dormers to

    wall, and behind that wall was a crawl space the ran the entire length
    of the house...can be rather entertaining when babysitting your

    A cape is symetrical front to rear and side to side.  The pitch of the
    roof is equal front and rear.  Adding a full shed dormer make it more
    gambrel like.  Though the original envelope is still a cape.  I live in
    a hybrid. I call it a cape-box :-)

    tax policy, you would have to look at taxes that were based on street
    footage.
    
    
    But taxes had *nothing* to do with the popularity of saltboxes and
    capes in New England.  You find them *everywhere* in New England.
    And property tax policy was *not* uniform throughout New England.
    
    For god's sake, half a century goes by and nowadays people think of
    houses as such *static* creatures.  This was *never* the case.
    
    Capes and saltboxes were popular for very simple reasons - for the
    interior space provided they were very cost effective.  This 1 1/2
    story vrs two story tax reasons is total rubish.  1 1/2 story houses
    are *far* cheaper to build than two story houses.  PERIOD.
    
    They also provided cheap unfinished space that you could move into
    (the "starter home").  Today when you outgrow your "starter home"
    you call up a broker and put it on the market and look for that
    new home in the community with the great schools.  Not so in the
    past.  When you outgrew your "starter home" you *ADAPTED* the
    home.  Finish the unfinished space, dormer where needed, shed
    where needed, el this, el that, etc etc etc etc....
    
    Even full two story houses (the center entry colonial farmhouse
    that I live in) was built to be changed.  Our house started as
    a small two story four room center entrance.  In the first decade,
    the back el was added on - another two rooms.  Another decade, the
    barn was moved and attached to the house.  After another barn
    burned down, the owner probably got cold feet about the attached
    farmhouse fads.  The barn attached to the house was moved yet
    again and the structure attaching the house to the barn raised
    for parts to replace the destroyed barn.  Etc etc etc etc.
    
    Today's parody of colonial is a distorted grotesque monstrosity with
    a floor plan that is fixed for all eternity.  And there is no graceful
    way to grow (or shrink) these half-a-million dollar obese pigs.
    
    
    To show how much things have changed in half-a-century, the government
    housing built in my neighborhood after WWII is predominately cape.
    None of them were finished, all of them were cheap.  Everyone of them
    today has been adapted, added on to, finished, domered, sheded,
    even eled, whatever the owners needed.
    
    Go to a new subdivision, and if you find any newly constructed capes
    (for those few souls who *just* *love* the one bedroom downstairs two
    upstairs layout) you will find that newly constructed cape *fully*
    *finished*.

    Bah!  Unneeded space was removed because people were *FRUGAL*!

Oh dear, it appears I touched a nerve.

Regardless, the part about the upper stories of buildings in Boston being
removed for tax reasons was from a tourist brochure or plaque along the
Freedom Trail in Boston, it wasn't anything *I* made up.

Mebbe the same tourist guides (the trolley tour people) made up that story
and made up the story that the "shotgun" style house, popular in New Orleans,
was also for tax purposes.

recessed front wall making a front porch?

    Shotgun houses have a hall way that goes from front to rear with a door
    at either end.  It had to do with being able to shoot from one end of
    the house to the other I think, in case of intruders etc.  This Old
    House was involved in a renovation of one a while ago.  

    shotgun houses are very long and narrow.  the hallway runs along one
    side of the house - front to back as bri says - with all the rooms
    opening onto it.  you can put a very large number of shotguns along a
    very small frontage.
    
    in some new england locations, houses were, once, taxed on the number
    of ROOMS they had, not the number of storeys.  each CLOSET counted as a
    room, which is why so many old houses were nearly or completely devoid
    of closets.  mine did not acquire closets until it was reassembled on
    its present site in the fall of 1901.

    The reason old houses don't have closets is because their owners
    didn't have many things to put in closets.  What they had would fit
    just fine in armoirs or dressers.
    
    Outside of the Shakers, built in furniture (which is all a closet is
    afterall) was not fashionable and generally not considered practical.
    
    Tastes change, and today, everyone is putting closets in old houses.
    Give it time, someday people will be renovating today's houses by
    pulling all those closets out (and maybe even undoing those hideous
    huge kitchens) and wondering what the hell all those long gone folks
    (us) used to need all that inefficient storage space for.

and never the type to look for loopholes or minor changes to shirk their civic
duty and lower their tax bill.  Wonder if they fought to get to the head of the
line to pay when the tax bills came out.  And all the stuff about the American
Revolution and the tax stamp, Boston Tea Party etc. is all Republican
propoganda.

I'm sure all of the houses in Southwestern Louisiana, which were built with
staircases on the outside to avoid the tax levied by certain 18th century
governors on interior stairwells, will be pleased to learn of this.

    You suppose that if certain 18th century Maine governors had levied
    tax on interior stairwells that many houses in Maine would have been
    built with exterior stairwells?  I don't think so.  And why is that,

    The best example of tax driven architectural style comes from the
    frontage levies.  Architecture in many different locations evolved
    rapidly (and similarly) in response to these levies.  Form following
    taxation.
    
    But there are definately other examples.  My favorite RECENT
    example.  The growth in half-million-dollar brand new huge
    Colonials in suburbs surounding Rochester, NY.  Almost without
    exception, the people who are moving into these new houses
    come from a small region in California.  Tax driven architecture.
    
    But Capes, Salt Boxes and how many closets are all examples of
    kooks obsessed with taxes.  Tax policy had *nothing* to do with
    these architectural forms or features.
    
    
    The cape and salt box evolved over a broad area with many different
    tax policies and yet the form was the same.  These architectural
    styles are not the result of form following taxation.
    
    
    And sorry, but in local areas where closets were counted in assesments
    for property taxes and in local areas where closets were not counted in
    assessments, you find old houses with the same number of closets.
    Few to none.  Because you only have closets if you have a need, and
    there was little need.  If you want to point to the primary cause of
    closets, you'd have to point to two principle causes:  1 - sewing
    machine and 2 - washing machine.

staircases in Southwestern Louisiana was most definitely influenced
(hell, CAUSED) quite directly and immediately by local taxation policies.
Which was specifically what I claimed in counter to your contention that

of property frontage vs. narrowness. I didn't say anything about anything
New English, so don't try to use that as smoke and mirrors to cover up your
presumptuous error posted earlier. Just admit you overstated the matter
and be done with it.

    There was a very light powdery dusting of snow when I left work at
    7:30, but by 10 when I left rehearsal it had turned to rain.
    
    It's kind of slushy rain, though, and my driveway is crunchy 8^p.

    got up this morning, and even after turning the heat down before i went
    to bed, the temp was still up where it was when i went to bed...so i
    looked outside...no snow...good sign...went out to start the car a bit
    later...the thermometer on the wall outside next to the door said a
    whopping 40 degrees!!!  like a major heat wave!!!  and the people on
    the radio were talking about it getting up to 50!!!!

    Well, I'm safe from the snow until then...

  Last night the TV7 weatherperson made the point that our total snowfall in
the Boston area is around 14 inches. Last year we got 14 inches in March alone
and the total for the winter was 89.

temperature.  Was it different in your backyard?

    Certainly was fairly nice here (N.J.) all except one storm that dumped
    8-10 inches. I could go for a few more like the past one.

    
    Phil - we had a warm second half in 1994, and a very warm first
    quarter 1995.  We had a cold first quarter in 1993, and a brutally
    subnormal first quarter 1994, a record all-time low for two of four
    months and much more snow than normal.  Thus it would not surprise
    me if "1994" is counted as warm and "1993" as cold, but that is not
    the way New Englanders remember it.  I went through TWICE the wood
    to heat my house last winter as this one.  My thermometer doesn't
    count anything over 60's - that's warm enough for swimming, and
    costs me nothing.  But degree days cost money, so I notice them.
    And I measure the woodpile.  This winter was MUCH warmer than last.

Well I hoped that it would cool down today when we had 15 minutes of
hail, but the temperature immediately soared back up afterwards with
some added humidity.  I'm having to sleep with all the upstairs windows
open, and the bedroom doors, unfortunately, although it makes it a bit
cooler, the whirring and clunking noise of the Vax in my spare bedroom
keeps me awake.
