Motorhead has been around for a long time. They were the first thrash
band from the 70's. I have just about everything they ever made. I met
them in person when Robbo Robertson was playing lead after Fast Eddie
Clarke left the band. This band defines the phrase Heavy Duty.
Albums:
Motorhead
On Parole
What's Words Worth?
Motorhead: The Golden Years
Overkill
Bomber
Ace Of Spades
No Sleep Till Hammersmith
Iron Fist
Another Perfect Day
No Remorse
Orgasmatron

Their best albums are Bomber,Ace of Spades,Iron Fist,No Remorse,and
Orgasmatron.

| Are they still around??? You bet!!!!
Just about any of their back catalogue is worth getting hold of. IMO the ones
to look out for are Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith
(that's a live one), Another Perfect Day, and Orgasmatron.
For our UK listeners, Castle Communications have a number of the 'Heads's out
on a budget price. "No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith" is 3.99 on vinyl (around 6
quid on CD), "Bomber" and "Ace of Spades" are available as a Two For The Price
Of One deal and will set you back around 6.50 for vinyl and 10 quid for CD.
"Overkill" and "Another Perfect Day" are available in a similar package.
All these prices are in pounds sterling.
Motorhead are the band who I reckon invented thrash. In fact, as I type this
I'm listening to "The Hammer" from "Ace of Spades". Recorded in 1980 it runs
like a rocket sled on greased rails (about 250 beats a minute).
They have been way ahead of their time, have been really messed around by
record companies over the years. Yet they have produced some of the best
music, are incredible live (and VERY loud), and help new bands get an airing.
As you may have guessed, we're taling about one of my favourites. No nonsense,
raw, Rock'n'roll. (IMO)

That's not what they said on their interview on Entertainment
Tonight (or was it the Today show.....one of those two).
They basically said (paraphrased) that it didn't really matter
where they played their music from and where they called home.
That they wanted a change of scenery and LA was it, they liked
it and they were going to stay. And they wanted to know why
everyone was making such a big deal out of it.
That's just what they said in the interview....

I just picked up Motorhead's latest album called "1916". The material
is great but the sound is terrible. They changed record labels and this
might be he cause. Here is a list of some of the tunes:
You'll be the one to sing the blues (Excellent)
I'm So Bad Baby/I Don't care (Wailing)
Voices in the sky (Excellent)
Nightmare/The Dreamtime (Great. Very erie)
Going to Brazil (Funny. Typical Motorhead)
1916 (This is very different for Motorhead. Very little instrumental
help. Sad song about World War one.)
Make My day ("Roll over and make my day")
Shut You Down (Good)
Angel City (Storys about L.A. Cali)
Love me Forever (Huh?)
A great Album but the sound could be clearer. Orgasmatron was very
clear and I would say it was Motorhead's best effort since Fast Eddie
Clark left the band to form FastWay. I think I like 1916 better than
Rock n Roll,though.

| I second DEEBS' opinion about "1916". I'm not a Motorhead fan but 1916 is an
excellent rocker. I even like the sound (on headphones it sounds clear). These
guys deliver real punch at very high speed and still let place for melody.
Favourite songs for me are: "The one to sing the blues", "1916", the love ballad
(yes it's a good one) and well ... I like it all. Very fine and fast guitar
solos. Well recommended ! (even if you don't like usual Motorhead).

Motorhead, well Lemmy and their guitar player, were on Letterman
Thursday night. They played a Chuck Berry tune with "The World's Most

When the show came back from commercial (after playing the song) Dave
shook his finger at Lemmy et al. and said, "That was nice boys but if you
ever do that again we're going to have to close the teen center." 8^)

| The following is taken from the latest (June 1992) edition of Metal Hammer
which sheds a little more light on the Philthy situation, and on the band's
situation in general.
Reproduced without permission.
"Motorhead are going through the strange process of recording their new
album without Philthy 'Animal' Taylor who, of course, has been their
skinsman since 1977 (apart from a three-year gap, '84 to '87, when
Saxon's Pete Gill took over). Many reasons and excuses have been bandied
about over Phil's departure, but the real story goes thus: The rest of the
band were groing more and more concerned about Phil's 'substance abuse',
which was beginning to affect his memory. Said Lemmy: 'Phil was beginning
to forget songs - he couldn't remember his drum parts. We decided it would
be best if he left, for his own sake apart from anything else.'
Meanwhile the follow up to '1916' is being recorded with the help of
drummers Tommy Aldridge and ex-Dokken Mikkey Dee (who's now replaced
Vinnie Appice in World War III). Slash of Guns N' Roses has also
contributed to one track on the album.
The general word on Motorhead is that they badly need the money from the
album - Phil Campbell has already lost his house, and Lemmy didn't receive
'what was expected' from his co-writing contributions to Ozzy's last
album. All they have to do is tour the UK..."

not dreadful (like Iron Fist), nor is it that good. But, it should enable
them to pay the rent for a while.
IMO: There seem to be a lot of left over riffs from 1916. Cat
Scratch Fever is a passable version, but I, too, prefer the original.
Hellraiser sounds OK, but I can't compare it with the Ozzy version
('cos I aint heard it). There is, however, a lovely "blues" track
with a bass solo in it. As ever, the lyrics are excellent.

157.60 | Motorhead story/interview | QRYCHE::STARR | We all want something beautiful | Wed Apr 13 1994 17:09 | 85 |
|
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The grizzled English band Motorhead can be
compared to an old children's toy: Like the Weeble, the quartet
wobbles, but it doesn't fall down.
Despite a 1991 Grammy nomination for the album ``1916,'' and
after years of failed record label deals, bad management, bad
distribution and just plain bad luck, things still aren't looking
up for Motorhead.
They signed a 12-month contract with the German dance music
label ZYX, which produced their current album, ``Bastards,'' but
the record is not available in most stores here or in Canada.
When that contract expires, Motorhead has no idea what's going
to happen, as the label has refused to sign them for a second
album.
But all the upheavals in a nearly 20-year career have left the
band more defiant than ever, even though guitarist Phil Campbell
calls them ``the loudest band in the world with the worst luck in
the world.''
``We can't do anything else -- what would we do?'' Campbell, 32,
said. ``Music is what we understand. ... Until somebody offers us
something better, we plan on doing it.''
Campbell and his guitarist partner, Wurzel (who was born Michael
Burston), talked about the band's various misfortunes in a
backstage interview prior to opening for Black Sabbath.
With cigarettes in one hand and cups of beer in the other, the
two make an interesting foil. Campbell is the extrovert, clad in
sweat pants and purple high-top sneakers with a matching bandanna
around his head. In the middle of the interview, he broke into a
series of off-color jokes, told in his heavy Welsh accent.
Wurzel, 45, in black T-shirt and jeans, is a bit more shy. He
speaks deliberately, with a broad grin and a good dash of
self-deprecation.
``We enjoy playing music,'' Wurzel said. ``I suppose that's why
we put the band together in the first place. ... You don't put a
band together thinking, `I'm going to make a million dollars,'
although it'd be very nice.''
Wurzel and Campbell say they're not sure whether they'll write
for another album, but Wurzel says some measure of success would
boost their confidence.
``I think that if we had a real big-selling album, it'd get rid
of a lot of nagging doubts in the back of all our minds of one
aspect or another,'' he said.
Even though the business end of their career has been agonizing,
the songwriting process for Motorhead is anything but. The average
writing period, Wurzel says, is two weeks; the recording period
about the same. And writers' blocks easily are solved.
``If we haven't got anything written,'' Wurzel said, ``we'll all
just sit there and go, `Ah, we don't have anything. Let's go to the
pub.'''
Like the title track of ``1916,'' ``Bastards'' has one song
that's bound to inspire some pretty strong reactions. ``Don't Let
Daddy Kiss Me,'' an acoustic ballad, has bassist and singer Ian
``Lemmy'' Kilmister singing in his ragged, unvarnished voice about
incest. It makes Aerosmith's similar song of a few years ago,
``Janie's Got a Gun,'' look tame.
A main point of that song, as well as of another ballad, ``Lost
in the Ozone,'' is God's accountability for life's horrors.
``If there is a God ... he's gone out and we don't know when
he'll be back,'' said Lemmy. ``Show me how many things are
explained by, well, `God works in a mysterious way'? Well, it's too
mysterious for me, I'll tell you that.''
Lemmy, clad in a sleeveless Motorhead T-shirt and black jeans,
with a sports bottle full of Jack Daniels at his side and a
cigarette in his hand, is a formidable presence. He has a wicked
sense of humor and a personality that fills the room.
Getting older in music is a double-edged sword -- either you're
venerated or you're seen as a dinosaur, still slogging away trying
to reclaim past glories. Lemmy, who's nearing 50, scoffs at both.
``People say, `Why, Lemmy, you're a god,' and I say, `No, no,
I've seen God ... and he's taller,'' he said with a laugh. ``I'm
God ... Really? I'm your best shot? If they say you're a legend,
it's very nice, (but) if you think of it, legends are dead.''
Lemmy's far from calling it quits, despite all the ups and downs
he's had as unofficial leader of Motorhead.
``I don't see why I should stop playing it if I still do it that
well,'' he said. ``If we made an album and it was terrible and we
couldn't get it any better, then I would say we should give up. But
we didn't.
``There are always people who want to sign us just because we're
Motorhead. The trouble is finding somebody who's got real
confidence in us. ... I just wish that people would see us as
contenders instead of having had our best days with `Ace of Spades'
(the band's classic 1980 album).''
Added Campbell: ``We've still got our integrity. We'd rather
have the money, but there you go.''
