37.1 | I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance. | OOBIE::DAMORE | I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo. | Tue Aug 03 1993 17:06 | 24 |
| Hey folks,
Time for me to bid my farewells too now.
I had to look for bigger and better things outside of DEC...excuse
me, Digital (in fuscia). Felt like it was time for me to move on, so I've
taken a job with a company in Bedford Ma.
I'll be keeping in touch via JJ probbably, maybe some others over
the internet.
Only been in here for 1.5 years or so but it's been a scream.
I'm glad I got to meet those few in here that I have, and I hope to still party
with you folks on the occasions you get together, and maybe meet a few more!
Leaving DEC (I've been here 7 years now) was a VERY dificult decision
for me, not the least of the hard choices being that I was going to lose
constant touch with many friends.
Take care, I'll be around for a little bit but then I'm history.
Party on Garth.

In Vic's case, she knew who I was but I didn't know who she was (she
saw me at a Citadel gig, so that how that happened).
In your case, I know you but you don't know me. I never made the
connection between the GOOEY::JUDY in H_M and the one at the ZK

Yes, that's what I hear.
Although when I try hard, I guess I can understand it, but because the
separation package keeps getting reduced (and now eliminated I hear),
the net effect is that the longer you survive, the more you get screwed
if you get separated.
The complete elimination of the package is, IMHO, a major mistake
because it now means you are taking a MAJOR LEAGUE risk by STAYING!
Before you might say "I won't leave NOW because the package ought to
tide me over until I find another job."
Now, staying, means that if you get laid off your family will almost
certainly be put into a financial crisis (no income). That may be
a risk that valued employees who might WANT to stay may not wish to
take.
So employees may decide to look for jobs WHILE they still are employed
at DEC and have income, rather than wait until DEC terminates them and
leaves them looking for a job in an awful hurry (which decreases your
options).
I can accept a lot of what's going on as "what needs to be done" but
eliminating the package is not only a horribly unkind slap in the face
to employees who get terminated in the future, it's also just an
extremely bad business decision IMHO.

I'm told that it's been a long time since you COULD do that.
Bob Palmer said at least a year ago that he would not bribe people
to leave Digital. One of the big lessons that we learned from that
is that many of the people who leave are very talented people who
our competitors would hire in a second. Many of the people who
stay are folks who know that they may never get a job as good.
I believe that if you know a manager who accepted "applications" for
the package that he's in violation of a very strong corporate edict.
|
37.108 | | GOES11::HOUSE | Aren't you glad I asked? | Tue Jun 07 1994 17:00 | 25 |
| To my knowledge, you've *never* officially been able to volunteer for
the package and be granted it. Now, there may be some level of
negotiation that happens if your group has to make cuts and they know
you'd prefer to leave...
I'd have taken the first package that got offered 2-3 years ago in a
heartbeat (you know, the *really* good one) if it was voluntary.
re: db
I can understand your argument (don't reduce the already skimpy
severance package because it might cause attrition), but perhaps that's
what they want. It would appear that the thing of interest to the
current management is reducing headcount, regardless of where or how it
happens. If they can manage to squeeze some people out by voluntary
attrition, then that's that much less cost to the company to eliminate
them.
Quite honestly, given the large number of employees cut and heard some
of the horror stories about how callously some of the layoffs have been
handled, I'm a little surprised there hasn't been someone that's
flipped out and come back afterward for a bit of vengence. Hope we
haven't laid off any former Postal workers...

| People have volunteered and have been accepted in the past - I've seen
it first-hand. Today, I'm told it depends on your manager.
Also, I wouldn't buy the notion that everyone left today are less than
top-notch people who wouldn't gamble on the package. There are lots of
good people left, most with lots of seniority. Unfortunately, the same
can't be said about our infinite levels of middle management which
contributed to this mess to begin with. How come they're never TFSO'd?
We're now at a point that I never thought I'd see DEC come to: the
crossroads of becoming the next HP or the next Wang.
Re: callous techniques
I've heard in some areas, all those that had a '3' (i.e., doing your
job) on their PA were let go. I've also heard that salespersons that
don't meet their quota will be flat-out fired to save the expense of a
package.

Well, 2 1/2 years, a "2+" and 2 "1" reviews, and 2 recognition
awards later and I don't regret not taking the package for a
second.
With overtime, I'm making a heck of alot more than I was making
before being offered the package [maybe too much more when I
look at my YTD taxes 8^)], am having alot more fun than I did
before since I'm now writing all kinds of inventory and trans-
action programs for Distribution/Production using MAXCIM, DATA-
TRIEVE, TEAM DATA [learning it now] and a bit of DCL. And I'm
in line for a Production Control Analyst position which I'm told
is a step above a supervisor. Add some duties as a stockroom
and shipping/receiving coordinator and my duties as a process
engineering tech and you've got one busy, no-life guy. But I
still have a job and I like it. And the people here like me,
so I can't ask for much more.

| You're obviously fortunate, Shawn. You have traded a lump-sum payment
and having to look for a job in exchange for a weekly paycheck. I feel
fortunate as well, but only an extreme optimist would expect it to
continue. The numbers being tossed around for layoffs in the next year
are staggering.
|

Oh, definitely. And the lump-sum WAS something to laugh at, I'll
tell you. Even 2 1/2 years ago, in the days of the "better"
packages, I was looking at somewhere around $7K.
I won't even tell you how quick I made $7K last year, because you
probably wouldn't believe me, considering I was merely a stock-
room work coordinator in 2/93.

According to Personnel, it's never "officially" been voluntary. What
happens between someone like that and their manager is strictly under
the table.
> Also, I wouldn't buy the notion that everyone left today are less than
> top-notch people who wouldn't gamble on the package. There are lots of

I agree, however, in other companies who've offered something like that
(IBM a few years ago), their development efforts were crippled because
they lost critical resources. Face it, the person who knows he'll have
a difficult time finding another job isn't the one that'll typically
accept that kind of offer, it's the person that *knows* with a
certainty that they have valuable skills that other companies will snap
up in a heartbeat. Otherwise, they get no benefit from the change.

If that's is their belief, than I think that is even more stupid. I
have been told by some people whose word I have reason to trust that
it is not.
As you pointed out in your subsequent note, the people who leave are
likely to be the most highly talented people who KNOW they can get
jobs somewhere else. I'm told this was a bitter lesson from the
first SERP (voluntary early retirement) package.

Well, as some of you already know, I've been tapped on the shoulder, and my
last day here at Digital is this Friday, June 17th. I've seen a lot of notes
lately being written by friends and fellow noters who are leaving, and I
debated whether I wanted to add another one to the pile, but it seemed
inappropriate to leave without saying goodbye.
Digital has been very good to me, and I leave with no hard feelings. I came
here 6 years ago through a temp agency as a fill-in secretary for a week,
and ended up staying on and being hired (and trained) as a software engineer.
I'm lucky to be in the organization that I was, and to have the manager that
I did. I wish Digital well in the future, both for the sake of the company
itself and the surviving employees.
The toughest part about leaving will, of course, be the loss of everyday
contact with my co-workers - both within my group and throughout the company.
Via notesfiles, I've made countless friends; bought and sold more music items
than I care to think of; I've dated women that I've met over the net; found my
songwriting partner (hi Tom!), formed two DECjam bands, and found my current
band (See No Evil - which owes a large debt of gratitude to the DEC population
for your constant support!); taken vacations across the country (and outside
the country!) to visit fellow noters that I had never even met before - and
was welcomed into their homes like a family member!; discovered the writing of
Dave Barry; founded and/or moderated the HEAVY_METAL, AFTER_HOURS, and
BOSTON_BRUINS notesfiles; and just basically enjoyed the discussions and
cameraderie of sharing ideas and knowledge on my various hobbies with others
in the Digital community.
Yes, I will hopefully be on the USENET soon (either from a new company or from
home), but it will not be the same. Hopefully some of us will remain in
contact, and hopefully these friendships will not fall by the wayside just
from lack of everyday communication. I wish everyone the best in life, and
look forward to what's in store for me next (whatever that may be!).

and now I'll add my bit. I gave Digital my resignation today, with 4
weeks notice. It appears that they're going to keep me around for that
period, but I thought I'd let you all know what's going on.
At the latest, I'm outta here on Jan. 4th.

| > man!! there goes one of the originals.... where ya going to greg?
Well, TODAY it's called NCR Microelectronic Products Division, part of
AT&T Global Information Solutions. But it's been sold to Hyundai Corp,
effective at the first of the year. The bulk of NCR will be staying
with AT&T and Hyundai is going to leave the MPD as a wholly owned
subsidiary (hands off), so they'll be making up a new name.
I'll be doing systems integration for putting their RAID controllers
and storage array products onto a wide variety of popular platforms
that they sell onto (Solaris, HP/UX, AIX, SCO, Win-NT, Win95, Win/Dos,
etc).
> Rad_Rad...BTW, is that why it needed to change owners?
Yeppers. The reason for the urgency was that there was the potential
for me to be escorted out on Wednesday when I handed them my
resignation, since I'm going to work for the competition. That didn't
happen (guess they didn't feel that I was that much of a threat).
Perhaps because of the fact that, although NCR is a competator, they're
also a partner (DEC OEMs a couple of their controllers...) RAD_RAD was
on my workstation, a pretty nice one, which I figured would be claimed
by someone else in my group umm..before my chair was cold.
