I rather like the current Great White cover of Mott the Hoople's
"Once Bitten, Twice Shy", but I know Cat doesn't fancy it that much.
I think Racer X's version of David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream" is way
hot! Find it on their Second Heat lp.
Also noteworthy is G `n' R's cover of Dylan's "Knockin on Heaven's
Door"! Until now, there have been two live versions floating about
(one on the flipside of the Welcome to the Jungle 45), but hopefully
they'll record a studio version of it and include it on their next lp.
Now, Poison's cover of Kiss' "Rock n Roll All Nite" I think is way
lame...I think the production is lacking on it, and it took the umph
out of the original version, but hey, that's Poison for you.

Judas Priests' cover of `Johnny Be Good' was
okay, but I can't say that it was better than the
original by ol' Chucky ! It has both good points
and bad points. . .mostly I would say that the
vocals didn't impress me, while the guitar
work/instumental side did. This is only MHO,
since I'm sure there's people out there that do
like it. We've all got different taste's right ?
Wingers cover of `Purple Haze' is a definate
flop. Jimi Hendrix still holds the kingship of
that tune. (And probably always will !)
I know there's more, but I'm drawing a blank
right now. More later. . .

My favorite 3 HM covers:
- B..C. covering their song "I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep"
from "Blue yster Cult" much faster and changing the song title to
"The Red And The Black" on "Tyranny And Mutation"
- Blue yster Cult covering their song "Astronomy" from "Secret Treaties"
a little less spacey on "Imaginos"
- B..C. covering their song "Subhuman" from "Secret Treaties"
and changing the song title to "Blue yster Cult" on "Imaginos"
While I'm on a roll of bands copying themsleves, although these are
not "covers" like above, did you ever notice that...
- Steve Miller uses his exact same guitar licks on his old "My Dark
Hour" (might even qualify as HM, too) as he does on "Fly Like
An Eagle"
- The Kinks made an *obvious* copy of their "All Day And All Of
The Night" lick on "Destoyer" (easy one)

Has anyone in here mentioned about Van Halens(the real VH)
version of You Really Got Me. Every time I hear that song I
have to blast in on my stereo to the deafening point. The
Kinks never sounded that good. What other cover songs did
Van Halen do, besides You really got me, and Pretty Woman??

BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :^) :^) :^)
I've seen 'em live about 8 times. They *have* definitely sounded
that good. In fact, they have revamped *their* version to make VH's
sound *tame* (editor's note - Dave Davies, world's most underrated
guitarist).
Remember when "You Really Got Me" *first* came out - the "hottest"
stuff on the charts back then was stuff like "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."
These guys were one of the first to take r'n'r down it's hard
and sweaty path. They recorded this song with knitting needles
in the amps 'cause back then it was the only way they could get
the distortion they wanted. PIONEERS!

IMO, Dave's shining moment is on the live album (damn, the title escapes me at
the moment). Its the one that came out in the late 70's, with killer versions
of "Low Budget", "Catch Me Now I'm Falling", "Where Have All The Good Times
Gone", "Stop Your Sobbing", "Superman", and a shimmmering version of
"Celluloid Heroes". Dave was in top form at that time, and proved himself to
be a guitarist to reckon with.
Sorry about the slight rathole....

I thought it was the other way around ("from" for "for")... oh well,
the Kinks' album is "One For the Road." I was at the Providence
concert they used for the video that accompanied this album. Back
then, for some reason, Providence had the reputation for having
*the* biggest Kinks fans - they were getting good attendance there
even before the revival.
There is a pretty good "You Really Got Me" on that live album,
but it was mostly a "Geez, VH powered this up and people liked it,
so we better, too" version (imho)... Now, Dave is still rocking it out,
but he's doing it *his* way. Anyway, VH must like 'em, they're
the only group they covered twice!

Me too! As a matter of fact, I was in the front row, in front of Dave Davies,
and can be seen in the ad for the video.....
But, I must admit, depsite being a big Kinks fan, I think that the VH version
of "Where Have All The Good Times Gone" was better than the Kinks! It kicked
butt, while the Kinks version always seemed just a little bit too lame for me.

I just ran across this one. I like the cover that Great White
did of Angel City's "Face the Day". It helps that I liked the original
as well. In most cases these new covers are "rocked up" from the
original but it really isn't as much the case with this song.
Angel City had some good stuff in it's day. My old band covered
"She Keeps No Secrets" and "Marsailles"

three reasons...
1) The bass part, which drove the original song's groove, is subtle
in the WL mix and thus not effective at all!
2) Vito's guitar fills inbetween the vocal lines are boring...they
all end on the "1" (F#) and sound predictable after a while!
3) Mike Tramp's vocal performance sounds utterly uninspired and
canned. They should have let the bassist sing that one!

| The Scorpions version of "I Can't Explain" is one of those rarities in rock
for me - a cover that's actually better than the original!!! Although I'm a
big Who fan, I never like that song too much. But the Scorps did a great job
on it, and it really moves along. Love it!!!
Bon Jovi's "Boys Are Back in Town" sounds pretty good also. Its pretty
faithful to the original, but it sounds like the band had a really good time
recording it, and that feeling is infectious.
Ace Frehley's "Do Ya" has a nice feel to it, but its ruined by the vocals.
Ace should shut up and hire a singer ("Hello? Is Joe Turner there? Tell him
its Ace calling...").
Just my $.02 on what I've heard on the radio lately....

P.S. Oh, I almost forgot - Joan Jett's version of "Dirty Deeds" bites the
big one - avoid it at all possible costs!!!

blasted me for this one (I won't name any names, JOE), but I really
enjoy it. A really powerful version.
I actually like a lot of Joan Jetts songs (except the very gaggable "I

different tempo). I suppose it's the stuff she's put out recently
that's really turning me off. "Dirty Deeds.." is like the pinnacle of

Most of the additions are from "Stairway to Heaven, Highway to Hell" & VH.

it was off the new, hard to find, LIVE West German import.

"Honey Hush" is the same music as "Train Kept A Rollin'", but different
lyrics. And "Train" was originally done by the Johnny Burnette Trio in 1956,
then later by the Yardbirds in 1965, *then* by Areosmith in the 70's.
I don't remember Heart ever covering "Whole Lotta Love" anywhere, although
they have done a bunch of covers in the past ("Tell It Like It Is", "Long tall
Sally", "Unchained Melody", others).
"Killing Floor" is a Howlin' Wolf tune.
"Teaser" is Tommy Bolin solo, not with Deep Purple (I'm pretty sure...).
"Louie Louie" was written by Berry, but performed by the Kingsmen.
"Happy Days Theme" wasn't performed by Little Richard.

Oh I dunno, I think the lead singer mimics Stan Ridgway brilliantly,
albeit briefly, in that song. It's not that bad.
The Pogues have recently released a cover of "Honky Tonk Woman."
That, I regard as one of THOSE songs which can never be bettered
so there's no point in covering and releasing it as a single.

"Dimebag" Darrel (or whatever the hell he's going by these

much prefer Iommi's lead snipets on the outro part over
the stuff DD pulled off. Toni's licks are way more burnt
