Getting serious here.
Songs like "Foxey Lady" show alot of heavy metal promise. Who
else during that time could come up with something like that?
Something even close?
Even if you listen to it today, it puts up a lot of competition
to other so called heavy metal bands. IMO.
Hendrix is the balls.

Then again, if you want to go way, way back, I would say people
like Buddy Holly (my fav. and way ahead of his time), Chuck Berry,
Little Richard, etc. who were the harder rock of there time. Back
then when it was all rock and roll and thats it, people probably
argued saying things like, Chuck Berry is real rock and roll while
someone else said no, the Dave Clark 5 is or Diana Ross.
I know whos side I would have been on...

There are some who say HM got it's name from the 1959 book by
William Burroughs entitled, "Naked Lunch" (or maybe Steppenwolf
took Heavy Metal from the book...). Naked Lunch is a very bizarre
book, read it if you dare!! There is no doubt, however, that good
ol' Steppenwolf took their name from the book, of the same name by
German author Hermann Hesse (also an excellent piece of literature,

Helter Skelter was the first HM song no doubt. The Who
definitely did influence HM, but they are more of an RB band. I
feel that Zep was more RB than HM, so was Hendrix, Sabbath and Deep
Purple. As Sabbath and DP progressed they acquired a HM taste. Sabbath
with the album Vol 4 and even more with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.I
think DP's first HM album was Fireball (Mach. Head was still R&B).
Zep and Hendrix always seemed to lean more to R&B than HM (although it
was *heavy* R&B)
Only my opinion. I'm not putting any of the
groups down, I'm just saying what I feel is right.

| RE: .49
The Who were more of an R&B band? Deep Purple, LZ, R&B? I
disagree. Rhythm and Blues music is like Wilson Pickett and sh*t
like that. The Who were a ROCK band. And, like the song says,
"...[The Who] were the first band to vomit in the bar, and find
the distance to the stage too far." Also, they were the first band
to destroy their equipment onstage at the end of the night (kind
of the climax, or release, of the tension built up through the music).
Hendrix copped this from them (Hendrix, BTW, opened for The Who
before he made it big enough to headline). Pete Townsend wrote
the first rock opera, "Tommy". I just don't see how you can call
songs like "Substitute" and "I Can See For Miles" R&B songs. The
chord progressions in most Who songs are not the traditional I-IV-V
of R&B.
Also, I like "Helter Skelter" and it was a very heavy song in its
day, but more punk (IMO) than HM. BTW, after attending a Who concert,
Paul McCartney said, "I want to write a song that's heavier than
even The Who can do". Helter Skelter was the result of that effort.

We all know Elvis is the king of Rock (although I tend to think Chuck

Steppenwolf in "Born to be Wild" is credited with starting the term
"Heavy Metal". Were they the first Metal band? If it was a product of

I agree that if you open a dictionary and look up Heavy Metal there is
a picture of Judas Priest on the Screaming For Vengence tour.
But that's not the question...
Back in 1962 the was a guy by the name of Ted Nugent who was in a band
called "The Amboy Dukes". Even though Teddy was a young man his guitar
could blow the balls off a charging rino at sixtey paces,ya...
Their first big hit was on their first album titled "Journeys and
Migrations" The song was called "Journey To The Center Of The Mind".
Nugent used to stage guitar battles onstage climaxed by feedback
battles. He never lost a battle. At the start of their live shows,Ted
would come out on stage dressed in a loincloth(which he wore again in
1980/Scream Dream tour) and an indian headress carring a bow and arrow.
He would then shoot a flaming human scull off the top of his amps. Then
the party started.....
Ted Nugent. The Motorcity Madman. The Detroit Wildman. Heavy Metal's
first gonzo guitarist. Nugent was already in his second band when Black
Sabbath/Earth was forming. And let's face it. Nugent's showmanship and
his ability to turn a crowd of thousands into foaming_at_the_mouth
maniacs was what todays Metal is based on. There's no question that
Ted Nugent was the founder of Heavy Metal.

| But are we just looking for the founder or for an acknowledged 'King'.
In my opinion (humble as it isnt) no single person can be the 'King of
Metal' that should go to a band. Blue Cheer, not a chance, I was
around then and they were el-crappo. Led Zep are heavy rock not metal.
Deep Purple has possibilities but so do Judas Priest not to mention
Uriah Heep. Nope, the crown(s) can only be worn (logically) by Ozzy
and crew and all further permutations of 'Black Sabbath'. You can't be
a HM band until you have done a BS cover! ((.

| I don't know if I would say BS is the king or not. The first thing I
thought of was Mr. Hendrix. Of course with BS and Hendrix you have to
ask yourself "Who influenced them?"

| Hey guys, after you figure out who really started heavy metal why don't
you argue about what came first, the chicken or the egg.
The first true heavy metal sounds musta been some caveman beating on a
tree (or another caveman) with a club.

| Er Jesse, I hate to argue semantics with you..buuut, aren't trees made
of wood? If so how would that be classified as heavy METAL? (^8*
A new sub-genre 'heavy-wood' then you could have 'light kindling' and
'soft shavings' perhaps (^8*.

Aside from William S. Burroughs supposedly coining the word "heavy
metal" (as note .41 mentions) he seems to have influenced many bands.
Was his works mostly of the bizzzare poetry sort? Just curious. I
recently saw some band member, I forget who wearing a T-shirt with
his name onit and it suprised me to again seem his name come up.

I know that Steely Dan got their name from a Burroughs novel.

I haven't read anything by him, but one of his most famous books, The Naked
Lunch, was just made into a movie that was released a couple weeks ago.
