I guess heavy metal is like 80% hard rock, 5% punk and 15% attitude.

Heavy Metal is when you get a surge of energy from listening
to Metallica's new album, coz its such an outstanding piece of
work. Its a what gives you goose bumps when you listen to the
perfect playing of the great Randy Rhoads. And its a hype that
no drug can ever give.
Thats why no other music style comes close to it.

That's a pretty narrowminded view dontchathink? I agree that
England was a major contributor but there was and still is a good
strong American influence. Take Hendrix..for example..correct me
if I'm wrong but isn't he American. What about bands that are the
origional "rebel" rockers (for their day) People like Chuck Berry
and Elvis. I personally don't listen to either but I can not
deny their influence on music. And as I said for their day they
were pretty rebelious. They censored Elvis like they're trying
to censor some groups today. IMO heavy metal took it's roots from
several different places. If you were to ask 10 of your favorite
HM musicians what their influences are no two would be EXACTLY the
same.

For what it's worth , I would agree that Black Sabbath were probably
a major contributing factor to the development of todays Heavy Metal.
Paranoid and especially Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (although there were
a couple of 'soft' tracks) were at one time , my favourite albums.
I think that Motorhead took it a stage further , bringing it more
from the basic 'hard rock' , into a form based primarily (but not
exclusively) on speed and a generally 'heavier' sound .
Way back when , Motorhead would tour England , usually backing the
popular punk bands of the time , and gaining a cult following probably
due to their different style of dress ie , Hells Angels .
When punk ran it's course , the bands either changed their style
or split up . Motorhead didn't have to . They had a much bigger
following now , had a couple of chart entries along the way (sorry,
can't remember titles) and , in my mind anyway , lead the way for
the better looking groups with flashier clothes and hair-styles
to emerge later .
Uriah Heep brought a slightly different angle and a slightly different
following onto the scene . Unfortunately for them , Mick Box arrived.
But what *he* brought , was the high pitched style of singing that
is now very much copied (well , the stuff I've heard , anyway) .
Now , I'm not saying any of the above were the only , or even the
first , but they were popular , brought the major ingredients of
Heavy Metal with them , and left it up to the next 'generation'
to refine and mold them into what we have now .

| I'm not sure if metal found its origins in UK or the States. It has
probably come as a natural progression from Black Sabbath, Hendrix,
Zapper and Co, with latter influences from the Punk scene, where it
probably picked up the speed from.
I really cannot see how Blues gets roped in there, but there again
I guess most forms of music, in one way or another come from a
blues source.

| I'd tend to agree with your analysis. I would also include bands such
as Deep Purple in with this. I believe they were very influential
in the formation of hard rock/heavy metal.
I think that much of the debate on whether some of the early groups,
such as Deep Purple, J. Hendrix, and Cream were heavy metal is based on
the fact that music has only recently become so heavily catagorized for
force such a label. 20 years ago, there was just rock & roll, then it
started branching out and everything has a very specific name now.
There are a huge number of terms which we use for music now which had
not been coined a few years back.
Perhaps some of these bands, by modern standards would fit into these
catagories, however, I've seem enough discussion on the meaning of
these terms to know that there is no standard meaning to them. It's
very individual.
btw: I'm very happy to see our UK_MUSIC friends participating in the
discussions here rather than everyone fighting. Thank you all.

The Blues comes in through Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. I believe
that much of todays metal was influenced by Jimi and Zep, and therfore
has tie-ins with the blues. As I see it, Metal is a second generation
effect of the Blues. Much like you are a second generation effect
of your Grandfather.

| I feel all of these bands that have been mentioned have contributed
to what we now call Heavy Metal. As for what was the first metal
band, I really cannot say. I feel that Metal is more of a state
of Mind than a form of music. This state of mind was created by
such bands as Sabbath, and Zepplin and what grew from there is the
entire feeling of metal. This is also why I find groups that claim
to be metal really aren't. Metal that is made to be consumed by
the popular fad, really insults me. I just doesn't have that same
attitude/feeling of REAL metal.

| I really don't think anyone can truely pinpoint the source of heavy
metal without first truely defining what heavy metal is. And that
my friends, is an IMPOSSIBLE task. Is Metallica heavy metal? What
about Bend Ovy (oops, Bon Jovi) or Poison. Or Motorhead ? What
about Rush, and even ZZ top (yes, some sickoes 8^) even consider
them to be heavy metal)
Q: what is the source of heavy metal
A: Yes (the afermative answer, not the art rock band)
Q: what the hell do you mean by yes???
A: You figure it out.

| The source of heavy metal, although being a bit uncertain, can only
be traced back to a rather unknown band. This band was the first
to record what is known today as heavy metal music. The band recorded
two distinct, although out-of-print, albums--Vincebus Eruptus and
Outside Inside, the former containing the heaviest version of
Summertime blues recorded to date. This band combined the blues
sound with pounding bass and guitar riffs, which until this time
was unheard of. The art of innovation belongs to this band, the
true pioneers of heavy metal---introducing...Blue Cheer.

ago (Filmore West??). Anyway, he said before the show everyone was
marveling over the grey WALL of marshall stacks. Stack and stacks of
them he said--stacked 4 cabs high. Well, he said they came out and
were so loud that the hall emptied out immediately with people
screaming and holding their hands over their ears!
