RE: 4.33 Jerry's goin' to see DLR/Poison
Hey Jerry,
Don't groan too much about seeing that one! I saw them when they were
in Denver a couple of months back. You probably won't be impressed
with Poison (you've no doubt read what I thot...), but Steve Vai will
save the show for ya. The guy is a total monster. In concert, he
plays as well or better than on the albums, and moves around a lot too.
I was totally amazed! Be sure to take some binocs & watch his hands,
it'll scare ya.

re: .58
Yeah, he did several. It was pretty interesting...Vai plays Van
Halen a *LOT* better than Hagar sings DLR. Some of them he played
exactly like EVH (on record) and some he embellished a bit. It
didn't make it sound hokey or anything, everything was very tasteful
and true to the original.
The rest of the material was from "Skyscraper" or that first DLR
solo. There was only ONE song from "Eat 'em and Smile" (Yankee
Rose). That rather disappointed me, as I liked that album the best.
re: .59 Sounds like the same set (I saw it in Denver). I too am
at a loss for others, although I do think there might have been
at least one more.

143.12 | The Steve Vai Show with special guest, DLR !!! | RAVEN1::JERRYWHITE | Nuke McKinzee's | Wed Jul 20 1988 08:36 | 32 |
| David Lee Roth - Greenville Memorial Auditorium, 07/19/88
VERY good show. He covered "Panama", "Hot For Teacher", "Ain't
Talkin' 'Bout Love", "Hot For Teacher", "Jump", and "You Really
Got Me" from his previous musical entanglement. Vai had no problems
duplicating the tapmaster's licks along with throwing a few of his
own to boot. The new bass player is nowhere close to Billy Shehan but
he carried his weight. They did a timbale percussion thing with
ALL band members and some of the road crew out in front of the drum
riser. DLR had a boxing ring up over the sound board where he sang
Panama and he had the surf board bring him from there to the stage
while he tried to sing California Girls. His mic wouldn't work,
the sound tech gave him another when he got to the stage, it didn't
work, he got another and proudly announced to the crowd that he
forgot the f****** words. He an entertainer in every sense of the
word.
Now for the REAL show - Steve Vai. I was hypnotised. Watched him
for an hour and a half with the binoc's, that boy is slick ! His
solo's were tasteful and flashy, perfect mix too. But then again,
after hearing C.C.'s lame attempt at guitar school (Romperroom at
best ..) Vai HAD to be good. I swear, he did this "talking" thing
using his wah-wah aong with Dave and I could almost pick out the
words letter for letter. Do you gather I liked Steve Vai ? My
son was asking me during Hot For Teacher who was better, Vai or
Eddie. I acted like I couldn't hear him. Not really, it's a matter
of taste but Steve is awesome, EVERYONE, especially the string shakers
out there should go see HIM. They did 2 encores and then it was
lights up, drunks out, and where the hell is my car ???

I wish Steve Vai would leave David Lee Ego. He has so much going
for himself as a songwriter, and of course as a guitarist. The
interviews I've read that he's done in GTR Player make him come
across as a really cool dude who's easy to get along with, and very
serious about his music. Every interview I've read/heard with Roth
makes him come across as a self centered *uckhead who thinks he's
got it all figured out. And his actual singing, non-screaming voice
is HORRIBLE. Steve should realize he has a huge name now, and if
he leaves, he will attract a super vocalist and band to himself.

I agree with Joe! Vai is a pretty big hero of mine and I've read
a lotta interviews with him. He is definately the type that won't
do what he doesn't like! If he didn't like playing with Diamond
Dave, I don't think he would. It's not like there's noplace else
for him to go! He says that he regularly *turns down* offers to
play for others in the studio because he wants to keep an image
as a team player and play in a band environment. Face it, he's
probably one of the players in highest demand right now. He can
do anything he wants (and write his own paycheck to do it)!

To touch on a Michael Angelo note elsewhere...
A 'Guitar FTPM' interview with Vai touched on his heart
guitar, and about his double-handed playing. He was embarrassed
about all the attention he was getting, and gave all the credit
for this technique to Mr. Angelo.
Vai is, IMO, one of the most honest, sincere and talented
folks in rock. I don't believe the man HAS an ego (unlike his
partner, David ME Roth). I can't categorize him as HM, either...
the stuff he's done in the studio for others had varied extremely.
Thought i'd stick this here, instead of shifting the subject
elsewhere.

the studio shortly. Rumours are still going around that DLR

David Lee Roth, ``A Little Ain't Enough'' (Warner Bros.)
David Lee Roth titled his new album ``A Little Ain't Enough'' but
``Too Much Ain't Enough'' would have been fitting, too. This recording
is more of the very same rowdy look-at-me brand of rock 'n' roll that
Roth has been a part of since his days as the spandex-clad front man for
Van Halen.
Big Rock is what Diamond Dave calls it and it's plenty large
throughout ``A Little Ain't Enough.'' Of the 12 cuts, only three of them
go less than 110 mph. Jason Becker fills the Eddie Van Halen role by
efficiently providing the big, bad guitar sound to compliment Roth's
screaming vocals.
The lyrics aren't about anything specific -- just hell-raising and hot
women in general. You get a picture of Roth winking as he sings a line
like ``I'll pretend I'm G.I. Joe and you be Barbie doll'' on ``Baby's on
Fire.'' Roth's don't-take-this-too-seriously sense of humor flares
brightest on ``It's Showtime!,'' a send-up of the record business.
Some of the high points are ``Shoot It,'' which gets a boost from a
lively horn section, the menacing ``Dogtown Shuffle'' and ``Last Call,''
a ``Walk This Way'' sound-alike.

I just finished reading his interview in the new GFTPM. He mentions an
illness, but doesn't specify what it is. From the way he talks, I
don't consider it terminal. This quote is strange though:
"Q: If it weren't for your illness were you headed for the road?
A: Oh yeah, definitely. Me and Dave are still friends and we'll
probably work together in the FUTURE. But it's something that I
couldn't do. Apart from having to SIT on stage, there's another 22
hours I'd have to deal with."

| I saw Dave last night and was amazed, the guy is just the ultimate
showman. He started off with "you really got me" and played most of the
new album,wotta a guy.Surprisingly enough(well to me anyway)he only
played one song off "eat 'em and smile" and one from "skyscraper"
but 3 from the "crazy from the heat"ep.Some old VH toons were dusted
down for the horde and the boxing ring was used to distract your
attention while the females inflatable legs appeared over the top of
the *huge* pile of Marshalls.
Biggest drawbacks were the sound was ultra crap. The venue itself is
almost impossible to get a good sound in(except for great white who got
closer than anyone)and the lighting guy didn't put the spot light on
the lead guitarist when he was doing his solo(Dave pointed to the
guitar player a few times then just eventually walked over so the guy
could get some recognition). And it is *definately* a one man show, don't
expect the band to do anything.Dave is the ring leader, its his show and
he definately call the shots. But,aahhh its the way he does it.

| Hey folks ! Talked to Ken Robinson yesterday (the KER), he said to
tell everyone `hi'. He also wanted me to post the review of the
Extreme/Cinderella/DLR show he went to.
This is his interpretation, not mine, I wasn't there. 8^)
EXTREME: Rocked the place ! Played for 50 minutes, including 1
encore. They opened up with `It's A Monster', played `More ...' and
another acoustic tune that wasn't on the album. The sound quality was
primo, and the crowd was definitely on fire.
CINDERELLA: Vocals were buried in the mix (probably a blessing ...).
The crowd was off buying t-shirts through a lot of this. They picked
up some momentum by the end of their set, but no cigar.
DAVID LEE ROTH: Ken is a big DLR fan, and he was truely disappointed.
Dave walked a LOT, no ninja jumps. Dave didn't `sing' very much, a lot
of `talking' through songs. Had his hair pulled back in a pony tail
(hey, that's what all us cool semi-bald guys do ...). The guitar
player was good, but he didn't hit the VanHalen/Vai licks even close,
people in the crowd were buzzing about it too. And no, he didn't
perform `Sensible Shoes', even though the crowd was screaming for it.
2 encores, and the 38 year old Roth drug his beat bones back to the
dressing room.

Not that I happen to like DLR or anything...
but he's certainly put out some inventive, catchy LP's since the "big

Subject: David Lee Roth arrested for buying marijuana
Date: Fri, 16 Apr 93 19:55:45 PDT
NEW YORK (UPI) -- David Lee Roth, former singer with the Los Angeles
rock group Van Halen, was arrested Friday in New York City for buying
marijuana in what police described as a routine sweep of Washington
Square Park.
A police spokesman said Roth, now performing solo, was taken after
the arrest with other suspects from the sweep to the 6th Precinct
stationhouse where he was charged with a violation and issued a summons
to appear in Criminal Court May 21 and released.
Charged with buying $10 worth of marijuana, the spokesman said Roth
faces up to 15 days in jail and or a $250 fine.
Roth's career with Van Halen reached a peak in the mid-1980s, when
the group came out with a series of hits, including ``Jump'' and
``Panama.''

"2 Fools Born a Minute" is cool - I particular love the lick before
the break and the rap aftewards: "Nah, we can't let Stevie drive",
"Man, I gotta be home before the end of the record", "here's a little
combination for ya", etc.
I think Vai's guitar work with DLR is a) comparable to most Van Halen,
and b) better than anything else he's done including the solo albums.

He wrote an "open letter" to the readers of Guitar for the Practicing
Musician.
He's a lot worse than crippled. He can't feed/bath/etc himself
anymore and he has a lot of pain.
However, that has NOT stopped him from producing another album.
Apparently he wrote it using a computer and got other people to
perform on it. As I remember, it's almost done and will be
released on the Shrapnel label.
He's tried a bunch of "alternative" therapies, but most of them
haven't helped. Apparently he's into something new which has
helped somewhat with the pain.
But from what we know of this disease, the prognosis is not very good.

Today's USA Today has an article about Dave's new Vegas
nightclub act. He's looking to "redefine the image of Vegas
performers and give aging music fans an option beyond arena
rock". His repertoire includes only a few Van Halen tunes
but "minus the crunch guitar".
"Instead he has cooked up a jazz-bluesy stew of Fats Waller,
Miles Davis, James Brown, Boz Scaggs and Lois Prima. Rock'n'Roll
is in the rear view mirror. I ain't that angry anymore".
His band is a 14-piece ensemble known as the Blues-Bustin'
Mambo Slammers. 6-piec brass section, latin percussionists,
and Edgar Winter on keys and sax.
On mosh pits: "If you see people start to slam into each other
and wrestle while you're onstage, it's because you stink".
On Van Halen: "Like and ex-wife. Not a lot of contact. There's
recrimination and nostalgia. I'm still proud of what I did
with them. Their new singer is about as boring as the second
Darren on Bewitched".

depending on how old you were...you could say the same thing about
old VanHalen playin what teeny-boppers liked to hear. How old
were you in 78 ? I was all of 6...I think old VanHalen caters just
as much to the teeny-boppers as the new stuff. It's just old VanHalen
catered to the 80s teeny bopper, while new VanHalen caters more
to the 90s teeny bopper. Since I guess I love both that would make
me the eternal teeny-bopper. ;(

But anyways, old Van Halen was ground-breaking stuff. Teeny-

the pop stuff, whatever happened to be out at the time. And
in comes this EVH guy with blazing speed and "groovy" rhythm
work. People weren't ready for that at the time.
BTW, I was 12 in 1978 and still listening to pop and disco,
and watching "Donny and Marie" and "Dolly Parton" in their

I have every Post-Van Halen, Roth CD. And only 1 Van Hagar,
and thats because Columbia House sent it to me, and I was too lazy
to send it back. I can't stand Hagar. And I also believe they are
musically focused on the Teeney People (ie Paulla) where as Roth
is simply trying something new. As for Old Van Halen focusing on
the Teen's in 78, I was hardly a teen (7yrs old) but I too remember
that was a time of Disco, Van Halen was more of a pioneer, of the
late 70's for hard rock.

song from any of their albums!
Quit living vicariously through your teen idols pants and get a girl of

contributes. Sammy was BEST when he was on his own IMPO. Hmm, Marsha

| Re: Mike
For the first couple of albums 5150 and OU812 I would agree that
Sammy probably contributed a lot to the writing. But with their newest
album you can tell that Eddie is reflecting on his own life by
listening to the lyrics. That whole album, Balance, has a sort of
bitter tone to it and I think has something to do with Eddie finally
writing about him and Valerie. But lets put DLR and Sammy aside for
a second and look at who's left. Michael Anthony, Eddie, and Alex.
These 3 guys are really who Van Halen is. Their whole sound has always
been the same and has been inmistakeable. Mike always plays those
eighth notes on the bass, Eddie always has "his sound" and those great
solos and nifty licks, and Alex always plays heavy on the cymbals.
And between Eddie and Mike with backup vocals they've always had those
really high pitched backing harmonies and stuff. The only thing that's
really changed is singing style if ya ask me. Diamond Dave was more
of a talker...he talked a lot of the songs rather than 'sang' them to
a melody. Whereas Hagar is more of a screamer and most of the songs
always have a melody he follows with the occasional scream.
But the music, the style, the sound is all Eddie, Alex, and Mike. That's
what rules. That sound. Those 3 guys are awesome and could probably
have anybody sing for them and they'd still be just as good.
Shane, who can't shut up about VanHalen ;)

Just a nit.... a friend of mine is about the biggest Van Halen fan
there is. He claims Sammy wrote the lyrics to "Amsterdam", and
that Eddy didn't like them. Having a family now, he didn't
like the references to pot in it.
I don't know how many other songs Sammy might have written, but
my sources tell me he wrote that one!
BTW, this friend dragged me to see Van Hagar at a brand new
outdoor stadium in W. Hartford CT a month or two ago. The whole
show, Sammy kept saying how great it was to be back there.
The funny thing is, he'd never been there before! He was getting it
mixed up with Great Woods. (The place looked a LOT like great Woods...
I think it was called The Meadows)

Arguements can be made for both sides. Both singers have brought
something different to the band, and both were good in their own ways!
The only difference is that before VH Sammy had a very successful solo
career...and after VH Dave's solo career floundered.
But with VH they both have had great success...SOOOOOOOOOOOO

| Y'know... I hear all this talk about how DLR is "floundering" and how
every Van Hagar album is a #1 (which btw, I think is a false claim)
and all I can say is this:
You mean... Van Halen is still TOGETHER???
I don't care how many albums they sell, I'd take the first two DLR
solo albums over 10 zillion albums like any of the Van Hagar albums.
They just ain't got no BALLZ!!! Least not, like the DLR/VH albums.
The way I like to put it is that DLR was like Eddie's guitar
personified: wild, crazy, pushin' buttons, fresh, etc.
Sammy Hagar is a "good singer". That's about as much as I can say
about him (assuming "...yawn" doesn't count as "saying" something).
Maybe part of it is just that Eddie burnt out, but since we're
comparing post-DLR says to with-DLR sales as if to prove something
about DLR... all I can say is that with DLR they were incredible,
w/o him they're just another band on the radio.
Someone needs to light the fire under Eddie's butt again. DLR said
that was one of the things about his band with Vai/Sheehan/Bisonnette
was that they had the fire that Van Halen had lost. Being that it
was DLR that realized it was that fire that made VH, I think that
makes me give him a TON more credit for the original VH's success
than most people are willing to give: He KNEW what made it work,
and he knew (and said in interviews) that the other VH guys were
getting lame and lazy.

That might be hard to do with Eddies hip problem. Didn't he break it
awhile back, and was pretty lame doing a show due to it, why bother if
it hurts that much? Ever hear of ReSchedule? Look at the RHCP's? They
are reschudeling due to drummers broken hand.....Eddie was cool when
they first came out, then a bunch of other up-and-comers started
immitating him, doing as well, if not better in some respects than
Eddie. His thing is old now. I lost interest in them basically after
DLR left the band, not that I have any of thiers on cd either...I guess
my tastes have changed over the years! Gotten harder! VHagar is still
for the teeny-bopper kiddies, and Sammy was better off solo. My
opinions, not law! No flames please, it's just that they aren't what
they used to be....no matter what a lot of people think!
Mike, who thinks it is time to leave this note and other VH related
ones alone for awhile, it might give Shane something to work with! ;-)

Obviously this is a somewhat contraversial topic and it seems that
most people are set in their opinions so I will just say one thing
to all those who think that old VanHalen was great and new VanHalen
is crap....

143.271 | HAGAR CAN'T SING OR ENTERTAIN AS GOOD AS MR. ROTH... | KDCA03::CDCUP_TORREN | | Fri Nov 17 1995 10:15 | 15 |
| Always hated Hagar and always will. I think when Roth was in
Van Halen, the music was hard rockin' party kickin' body swingin'
rock and roll. It seems now Van Hagar prefer to make statements,
and stand up on their soap boxes and preach, and they try to get
that 'perfect-radio' sound. Where as before, it was no so technical,
Eddie would just slam on the guitar etc. Van Halen is classic old-time
rock and Mother'f'n'Roll, I'm sure most people get that air-drummin'
or air guitar goin' when an old Van Halen tune comes on the radio,
but with new Van Hagar...I'm lucky if I even bother to scratch my
groin...When I listen to music, I want to hear some rockin adreinalin
pumpin partin' fun rock and roll, if I wanted soap box, I'd watch
CNN. Now granted, not all Van Hagar's tunes are soap-box, but they
just don't seem to play the party type tunes anymore...My Opionion...

| Yeah, if I was producing them I'd INSIST on doing something almost
completely "live" with few overdubs. None of this overblown
production crap - just a rock n' roll band pumping it out from the
gut. And I'd tell [warn] Eddie that his guitar was gonna be back
up front in the mix again - direct mic'd, almost no efx, etc.
I understand that the old albums used to be done that way. I even
heard that VH I was recorded in like 2 days or something ridiculous
like that.

agreed.. it kicked ..

They have a few songs namely on F.U.C.K. and Balance that you could say
they are 'preaching'. But if you actually would listen to 5150 and
OU812 there is still that 'hey let's get drunk and party and look up
girl's dresses' attitude all over the place. As for their perfect
radio sound if you listen to 1984 (last album with Roth) you'll notice
a difference in the production compared to their first album. I think
they were evolving their sound the whole time.

so "getting lucky" to you means the off chance that you scratch your
groin ?? :)
>> When I listen to music, I want to hear some rockin adreinalin

okay here are a few off 5150: Good Enough, Get Up, Best of Both Worlds,
5150. Here's some off 0U812: Mine All Mine, A.F.U., Source of
Infection, Sucker in a Three-Piece. These are all hard-rockin,
party-rockin, body-swingin songs and they happen to have Hagar in
the band.
>> if I wanted soap box, I'd watch CNN. Now granted, not all Van

Well the above mentioned songs from 5150 and OU812 are definately party
type. The last two albums have been more serious yes. I guess the
bottom line is everyone in VH is gettin older. Look at Dave. What
the hell kinda crap is *he* singin now ? I guess you can only dish out
soo much of one kind of stuff before you just start to burn out and
need to move on and express another side in your music. Granted we
all seem to agree that we loved VH with Roth cause it was up-beat,
party rocknroll. I love Calvin N Hobbes, but the guy who writes it
is retiring it this year cause of burnout. He wants to do something
else. I guess VH is wanting to do something else too. I myself love VH
and like their newer stuff. It is different and I can appreciate it. I
also love to throw in some Runnin w/the Devil too. I guess I'm just a
real VH fan and will always like thier music because they are doing what
they want to do as musicians and not what they think will 'keep' all of
their old fans. I respect them more as musicians that way than as just
performers.
Shane, who *still* can not shut up about VanHalen

I always thought that Dave was the "vocal personification" of Eddie's
guitar: arrogant, conceited, etc.
