    I like Night Train, and Rocket Queen. Awesome.
    
    But, the word from Axl and the Boys is that they just wanted their
    first album to rock hard, the next one's gonna have some "other'
    stuff. Booo. Rhythm and blues? Rap? Country? I don't know.
    I think the band's great. Read the article on them in SPIN. They'll
    be around a while, I think, if they don't kill themselves first.

    	G&R had a concert on MTV a few weeks ago.  Did anyone happen
    	to catch it?
    
    	I heard them say that the stuff they have on Appetite for 
    	Destruction is 3-4 years old.  So the next album they put out
    	will contain alot of newer things.  Let's hope they use their
    	head and crank out the same type of stuff they're doing now!!
    
    	Axl and Slash both agreed that they don't like to be "good"	
    	but when it comes down to business, they have to be.  When
    	they're by themselves, Axl says he likes to go into his apartment
    	and "destroy everything".  I'm psychotic are the words he used,
    	I believe.

    	Yea, I caught the G&R concert on MTV. Thought it sucked. I haven't
    seen G&R live but on TV they played awful. Timing was off, voices
    were..well..kinda off too. You know there is a difference between
    cutting a tape in a studio, and a live concert, but they just 
    sounded bleah. I caught Welcome To The Jungle a while ago on the
    Bangers Ball and that's what got me into G&R. I thought they were
    dynamite. Got the tape the next day. I like the first side myself.

    I missed g&r the last time they came over to the uk,I must admit
    I was put off by all the hype that proceeded the visit.However after
    buying "appetite ..." I was well and truly p*$#@^ off that I had
    missed them.I like all the numbers on the album in paticular "..crazy"
    "welcome to the jungle" and "sweet child of mine".
    I also have on tape various live cuts ,I believe these are from
    "live like a suicide" ep.and the b-side's of some of the singles,these
    are also brilliant.
    It now looks like we in the uk are going to have to wait until the
    summer before we see them,lets hope they are still alive and a working
    bband by then.
    Finnally I read that the new material is going to be more blues
    based,lets hope not.

    	Axl said in the interviews preceding the concert on MTV that
    	the concert was awful and they apologize for it.
    
    	And they said that while the audience was hearing everything
    	okay, all the band kept hearing was "spaceships landing on the
    	stage", ALOT of feedback, etc.  
    
    	If you noticed, at the end of the concert Axl throws his micro-
    	phone.  He said that he meant to hit the monitor man, but his
    	tour manager moved and instead he hit him.

       I saw the concert on MTV and I also recorded it. Yeah...the sound
    is a little off but I don't really think it is that bad. I just
    like to watch these guys live cause they have soooo much energy
     especially Axl. I also saw them a feew weeks back(may 11) at the
    Orpheum....and it was the BALLS. I thought the sound was awesome
    and Axl's voice sounded really good. The played all the songs from
    Appetite except "Anything Goes" and i don't remember hearing "Think
    about You"......But don't trust my memory from that show. They rocked
    they're asses off the entire show and when they played Nightrain
    I thought the Orpheum would finally collapse. I am soooo glad I
    caught these guys at the Orpheum and HIGHLY recommend seeing them
    at a small venue like that because I don't know how good they will
    be from the 238th row at Great woods or other big arenas with Iron
    Maiden this summer.

    Bill, I thought the Orph show was a lot better than the MTV concert,
    but I was still a little disappointed.
    
    As for the tape, I love it!!  Who wouldn't?  It's one of those rare
    tapes that you have to spend a lot of time with to truly appreciate.
    I personally find myself popping it in the deck at about 6am to
    wake me up for the commute.  People at work hear me coming in and
    say that my brain is going to have rotted out fo my head by age
    25.  "Totally abrasive" is the word I think he used...
    
    I rather like "Mr. Brownstone," it might even be my favorite song.
    It's vaguely reminiscent of my senior year.

    Yeah, I saw the MTV thing too.  They probably kicked *ss live but
    alas, it wasn't live to me.  Axel really gets into his music, which
    is good to see again in the land of posers where NOBODY sweats on
    TV !!  Speaking of that, this band could never be a poser band like
    Whitesnake.  Slash needs a bigger hat, and when he brushed his hair
    out of his "face" it got me thinking.  "Maybe they ought to change
    their name to Guns and Noses".  This boys got a honker on him that
    would make Carl Malden envious !!!  They've got the heart if not
    talent/looks.  I heard a local band cover some of their stuff recently
    and I'm curious to hear more of it now.

    Went to a show at the Channel a while back.  It was Red Hot Chili Peppers,
Fishbone (they ruled), and Thelonious Monster.  The guitarist from G&R came
on stage to play a tune with T.M.  When the guy played you could actually see
his face and he went nuts, jumpin' all over the place.  In G&R videos, the guy
hardly moves.

    I saw Guns 'n' Roses live at the Marquee last Autumn and they were
    f*****g excellent.  They have to be one of the best live bands around
    at the moment.  I hadn't heard any of their music before this concert
    and it was by sheer fluke that I was given a ticket, but I am now
    a devoted Guns 'n' Roses fan.
    
    The best tracks on the Appetite.... album have to be Sweet Child
    of Mine, Rocket Queen, Welcome to the Jungle and It's sooooo easy.
    Don't get me wrong, the others are equally brilliant, but these
    stand out from them.  I also like many of the cover versions on
    their b-sides - Knocking on Heaven's door, Whole Lotta Rosie....

    live EP. 4 songs on one side from thier first live Ep and 4 new

    	   Yeah, here's the lowdown I got from an interview with
    	W. Axl Rose and Slash...
    
    	   The current album (Appetite for Destruction) is composed
    	mostly of old stuff they wrote and performed during their
    	'clubbing' days.  The new stuff is supposed to be 2-4 years
    	advanced over the AFD album, and will reflect the bands
    	'matured musical tastes'.  They mentioned that they expected
    	a bunch of flak from their fans, who might not be ready
    	for the 'sudden' change, so I'm guessing they've mellowed
    	out a bit and gone for a more polished sound.

    	and they announced that a new G&R album would be coming out
    	this October.  I believe they said it would be mostly live -
    	and they even played a song (I forgot the name) that was going

What does the cover look like? I remember someone telling me that the 
cover art was changed after the first printing. I have the original
cover that shows the half-naked woman being attacked. Does it still look
like that? Or is it different?

P.S. In my original copy there was no sticker.

    Naw, the newer ones don't have that cover (unless it's on the back
    or inside), they have a sort of cross looking thing with skeleton
    faces that are supposed to look like the band members.

        The inside front cover of the CD insert has the 'naked woman'
        picture on it.  The cover is the cross.
    
        The back cover is a picture of the band, I believe.
    
        I can't STAND 'Mr. Brownstone' - almost as bad as 'My Michelle'.
        'Rocket Queen' is a runner-up for 2nd worst.

    	their set with "Night Train".  They were a little rough
    	(W. Axle and Slash smoked cigarettes during the last song,
    	which probably accounts for some of the roughness).
    
    	   When they introed "Night Train", Slash said:
    
    	   "We're gonna do a little song... it's not about drinking
    	or doing drugs... it's about a walk in the park... we call it,
    	"Night Train"'

    from a few months back.  I liked it, but still think that the sound

    Yeah, I heard Axel tell us all at Great Woods that the new album
    is due out in October. They did a song off the album, I don't know
    if it'll be the single or not. It was called 'Patience'. It's a
    HM Ballad. I thought it was excellent!!!
    
    Before I saw them I had heard that they sucked live, I have the
    Sweet Child single and they did It's So Easy on it, live in a bar
    in LA or something. It wasn't that great, so I expected them to
    suck live....Boy did they show me!! They were AWESOME!

                Just in case anybody is interested, my friend has
                an unopened copy  of Live Like a Suicide (I think
                that's the title) that  he's selling, but he does
                want quite a bit of  money  for  it  (some absurd
                amount in the $40-$50 range i think - didn't know
                if anybody was crazy enough to spend that kind of
                money, but thought I'd mention it).

        A while back I wrote a note about 'attitude', and expressed
        my opinion on the matter - the band's out-of-studio actions,
        habits, etc. have NOTHING to do with the quality of the music,
        short of the actual subject of the songs.  Why can't a band
        be liked for their musical talent, rather than hated for their
        appearance, etc.?

week, it should be the other way around for G&R!)

    Axel was straining his voice WAY too much.  The MTV music awards
    just wasn't a place for guns n roses.  I was thinking the same thing
    when Aerosmith was doing "Dude looks like a lady" as well.
    
    That award show stinks!!!  It is fixed.  Of all the videos that
    come out in the same year I can't figure out for the life of me

As far as vocals go on the MTV special, I thought they sounded much better
than Friday at Great Woods.  I didn't think he was going to make it to the
end of the show...  He isn't going to have a voice left in 5 years.

    I saw a clip of W.Axl Rose singing live recently, and he was really
    straining himself, which is strange, coz when *I* saw them live
    his voice was great (honest guv!!).

    This week end I listen to Guns n'Roses for the first time.  :-)
    It was "Appetite for Destruction", and I liked it. It reminds me some
    stuff of Aerosmith. I also had a 12' single with "welcome to the
    jungle"+"whole lotta rosie"(live)+"Its so easy"(live)+"Knocking on
    heaven's door"(live). I've got to admit that live sound was ok and that
    "whole lotta rosie" pleased me a lot :-).

    Yeah, on MTVs "The Week in Rock" "news" program, they did a long piece
    about Axl not being dead and all the rumors.  There were more than just
    the Axl OD.  There was one that Slash had murdered Axl and another one
    I can't remember right now. 
    
    It was pretty funny actually, cause they'd put up a labeled picture of
    the band with the legand "Not Dead", then a picture of Hendrix with the
    legand "Dead". 
    
    They repeated this several times, Axl - "Not Dead", Morrison - "Dead".
    It went on and on, Axl - "Not Dead", Elvis - "Dead?".  I was crackin
    up!

    himself with drugs and is seriously ill in hospital.  Guitarist

    When I saw 'em at great woods this summer, Axl seemed to be a very
    sincere person.  They really treat the audience with respect.  He
    gave us a short but sweet "Take care of yourself speech".  He said,

    	for  Destruction.
    
    	"Rocket Queen" and "Anything Goes" are about sex,

    	"Welcome to the Jungle" and "Paradise City" are the
    	result of "being sick, starving on the streets, and 
    	freezing cold with no  place to sleep."  "It's So
    	Easy" is about "living off girlfriends", and "You're
    	Crazy" and "My Michelle" were inspired by girls the
    	guys know.  "Out Ta Get Me" reflects their experiences
    	of being hassled and screwed over, and Izzy wrote

    Are you sure Shawn ?? I've read that its to released v.soon, and
    I've even got the track listing written down somewhere, the album 
    is called something like "The lies, the sex, the drugs, the truth"
    or something like that, and the only two tracks I can remember are
    "Patiance" and the acoustic (and weird) version of "You're Crazy".
                                    
    My soures could be wrong though.

    
        I saw an interview with Slash the other day and he said
        that they were getting ready to go into the studio to do
        the recording for the next album.

       They have an EP coming out at the end of this month. It supposedly
     has the songs off of "Live like a suicide (?)" and four new tunes
     on it which are mostly accoustic songs. They are going into the
    studio at the end of this year to start recording their next LP.

    As "Live like a suicide" is only available here (UK) on Import, they
    are supposed to release it soon here as a standard EP, which pi$$ess
    me off, as I've just ordered the import version!!!!

       I picked it up this morning and have been listening to it all
    day. I also really like the older material. It is REAL raw and
    thrashy. The accoustic songs are pretty good especially the slow
    version of "You're Crazy". The last song, "One in a Million", has
    some pretty blunt and brutal lyrics dontcha think? I wonder if any
    groups are gonna get pissed over the song.

    I like the new album.  The "Live !*?@ like a suicide" stuff is 
    the traditional sleazy GnR sound, but the new stuff has sent GnR 
    in a totally different direction, and all the assholes out there 
    who say that GnR can't play for toffee will be severely kicked in 
    the balls by the acoustic wanderings of Slash and Izzy.            
                                            
    My least fav track is "I used to love her", its a bit repetitive,
    but I think "One In a million" is the biz.

    the high-horse slaggers giving GNR sh*t when the only real
    reason was that the band was popular. God forbid a band should
    write a song that becomes really popular, or they're 
    automatically "POSEURS" and "FALSE METAL" bands. 
    
    I don't think they're a GOD band, but I can recognize 
    unwarranted slagging when I see it. 
    	Some people don't see this as an original band, dedicated

    Well guyz, I've finally managed to track down a copy of the Lies
    CD, by good ol' Bun's 'n' Toasties. I must admit at first I was
    a little confused by it, but after realising this was just an extended
    EP, I threw away my predjudices and had a good listen.
    
    I was impressed By the Live ?!*@ like a suicide stuff. And the acoustic
    tracks were absoloutely brilliant. I used to love her just 'Kills'
    me. I think they are quite brave to do this sort of thing, especially
    as they are an obvious (too obvious I hear some say) target for
    people saying that they are just cashing in on christmas. I for
    one am glad this EEP has come out, and I'm waiting with bated breath
    for the next full studio album.
    I re read an interview with Slash in Metal Hammer, and I was very
    impressed by his very considered view of the whole business, and
    his informed comment.
    
    			We want more   Buns 'n' Toasties.

     It was filmed at Castle Donnington and Giants stadium I think they
     said. They showed little clips from it and looked pretty good.

     I saw the Video and I like alot.....supposedly they start og with
    the footage from Giants stadium and Axl has the white leather on.
    Then it shows them getting on the concord and the last half is GnR
    at Castle Donnington. i seem to remember them skipping back and
    forth but I only saw the video once. Axl wasn't wearing the White
    leather outfit at Castle D. It looked like his regular black leather

    This review is by Rolling Stone Magazine, Issue 544, January 26,
    1989 - with Roy Orbison on the cover.
    
    
    *** 1/2  (three and a half stars) for "GN'R Lies" by Guns N Roses.
    
    Given that Guns N' Roses could probably release an album of Baptist
    hymns at the point and go platinum, it would be all too easy to
    dismiss GN'R Lies as a sneaky attempt by the band to throw together
    some outtakes and cash in on the busy holiday buying season.  After
    all, half of "Lies" as released in 1986 (as the EP "Live Like a
    Suicide"), and one of the four new studio tracks is simply and acoustic
    version of "You're Crazy", from "Appetite for Destruction".  The
    arithmetic is simple:  hungry fans plus *any* new product plus hordes
    of holiday shoppers equals one profitable little stocking stuffer.
    
    The good news is that "Lies" is a lot more interesting than that.
     Serious fans - even those who might have missed the previously
    released tracks - will want to concern themselves with the new side
    of the album first.  The calm folk-rick melodies of these four acoustic
    songs reveal yet another welcome facet of Guns n' Roses.  They should
    also end any further mutterings from the doubting Thomases out there
    who are still making snide comments about the band's potential for
    longevity.
    
    The lyrics are typically controversial.  There's "Used to Love Her"
    ("But I had to kill her"), a hilarious countryish number that will
    probably have feminist hot lines jammed across the country, and
    "One in a Million," a beautiful ballad that attacks nearly every
    minority group in existence; its lyrics are patented Axl Rose venom
    tempered with something that sounds oddly like compassion.  "Patience,"
    a song familiar to fans who've seen the band live, and "You're Crazy,"
    in its original laid-back form, serve as added bonuses.
    
    If you were expecting another "Appetite for Destruction", this record
    - or at least its acoustic half -  may disappoint you.  But if you've
    been looking for proof that Guns n' Roses aren't just another thrash
    in the pan, "GN'R Lies" is what you've been waiting for.  And much
    more.

    I read all this stuff about Axel in Hit Parade and my heart went
    out to the poor guy.  He's a madman but its not all his fault. 
    He's a manic depressive and is being treated for it with anti
    depressant pills.  These guys are hard luck all the way and are
    making something out of themselves.  Which in my opinion is okay
    (gotta support those nasty habits).
    I like G & R.  The first time I heard them though I didn't think
    they were heavy metal I thought they were boaderline hard core punk
    and since I used to be into that stuff at one time (briefly in a
    younger life)  I turned onto it.  I think acustically they're garbage
    though.  I used to love her (but hard to kill her) is this song
    meant to be taken seriously?  Maybe not.  I don't know.
    As long as they keep playing heavy and loud I'll like them other
    wise I don't think I'm too interested.  Patience is nice and melodic
    but it just goes against my grain to hear Axel singing a ballad.

C'mon Kat. You can't really think that is a serious song, do ya? That
song is a riot - I laugh every time I hear it! No wonder why the PMRC
is worried - I thought it was obvious that it wasn't serious, but maybe
its not to some....

When I first heard GnR, all I thought was - "Just another clone of
Hanoi Rocks. How boring...." I still tend to think they are just another
clone of Hanoi Rocks (who did the same stuff, but five years ago),
but I no longer think they're boring.

        On january 17th the Police were called to the apartment of Saul
    "Slash" Hudson for a disturbing the peace call. When officer Morales
    arrived he found that Axl Rose and his brother Stuart Bailey smelled
    of alcohol and had "Bloodshot eyes". The officer didn't recognize
    them and Axl said "Do you know who we are......I'm a Millionaire,
    and I'll have your stupid a$$" Stuart grabbed the officers shoulder
    so the officer hit him with his flashlight. Axl then clenched his
    fists and yelled "Thats police Brutality.....That 'll be worth a
    couple million"  They were both arrested and spent 6 hours in the
    drunk tank. A spokesman for Geffen records said they knew nothing
    of the incident.  This all happened at 5:30am too.
    
        Sounds like Axl will have another experience to write a song

record store. The A-side is the 'Live Like a Suicide' EP, and the B-side

    a Hard Place AIDS benefit slated for June 8th at New York's Radio
    City Music Hall, Guns n' Roses have withdrawn from the show following
    a request by the Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC).  The flap is a
    result of the lyrics to the group's song "One in a Million"
    ("Immigrants and faggots/They make no sense to me/They come to our
    country/And think they'll do as they please/Like start some
    mini-Iran/Or spread some f*cking disease").  "We acknowledge that
    Guns n' Roses was the first act to step forward for Rock and a Hard
    Place," says Richard Dunne, executive director of GMHC.  "We thank
    them for their offer.  However, after accepting their offer, the
    lyrics of one of their cuts came to our attention.  On the basis
    of the song's misinformation about AIDS, we feel that the association
    between Guns n' Roses adn this event is inappropriate.  We do hope
    that the band's interest in an AIDS fund-raiser reflects a better

                Don't know  how popular the song is yet, but they
                had a `Rock Dossier' on CHOM FM last night of the
                new Don Henley album.   It featured ALOT of other
                performers as well.  Names  ranging  from Melissa
                Etheridge, Eddie(sp) Brickell to Axl Rose.  (Plus
                so many more than I can remember !)  
                
                They played the song that Axl sings backup vocals
                for, and I can't exactly say it was  anything  to
                write  home  about.    The  intro  started with a
                harder edge than anything else I've ever heard by
                Don.  Sounded.   .  .METALish, but after a minute
                and a half of the  song  the  radio station faded
                out.  (It's a Montreal station,  and  I  can only
                pick  it  up  north  of Burlington.) From what  I
                heard of the song.  .  .I wasn't  impressed.  Axl
                could barely  be heard (although it didn't bother
                me any :^)).    I'm sure there will be some likes
                for it.  .  .but  for  now.  .  .it's a :^P !  It
                may grow on me after a few years though.  .  .ya'

    It was pretty intresting.  I got out of it that he isn't too
    comfortable with the fame and fortune of being a rock star.  He came
    across like a pretty decent person.  Of course they asked him about
    drugs.  He said right now while he is writing he has no desire to 
    touch them.

Speaking of Axl, I really like his part in the new Don Henley song. I know 
some people were complaining that you couldn't hear him that well, but I think 
the mix is fine. He fits the mood/tone of the song perfectly!

I also hear some of Axl's singing style being duplciated by Don in this song - 
its pretty funny, but its also cool!

I could't believe my eyes : On the 14th of July (National day in France) and 
after the "defile" and fireworks, they played on the TV : Guns & Roses Live.

It's very unusual as you probably don't know. And it was very good.

But I don't know where that concert was neither when when and may be you 
can help. It's probably a video tape.

They played only songs from "Appetite for Destruction" + "Knocking on Heaven's 
door". Slash was wearing a T-shirt with sonething like "Wasted Yo !"
Axl end up with a "Thin Lizzy" black t-shirt, but by the end of the show, he was 
grabbed by the crowd (which was totally wild) and falled from the stage, it
took 5 minutes for the security guys to get him back, the T-shirt had 
disappeared as well as bracelets, chain...
Also each time Slash was near the front row, people would grab every they could,
guitar, leg and more :-). 

Any idea if this is an official tape or a special TV concert. ?

I'm also wondering if you are all as wild as the crowd during concerts :-):-)

In the interview I saw, Axl said they were having problems, but that had
to be expected when you got so many infantile guys together.  Axl made the 
comment that things were rocky, but they would work things out...

He also said something about wanting a child psychologist on their next tour...

Rock Guitarist Couldn't Wait:

Guitarist Izzy Stradlin of the rock group Guns N' Roses has been freed on 
$5000 bail on charges of urinating in a jetliner's galley area.

Stradlin was arrested sunday at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
during a scheduled stop of a USAir flight.

Geffen Records publicist Bryn Bridenthal said Stradlin was angry at having
to wait to use the plane's restroom and "relieving himself in the galley
was just his way of expressing himself."  Stradlin was charged with interfering
with the duties of the plane's crew.  He was released Tuesday.

when Gn'R was opening for Alice Cooper one time, Gn'R was getting really 
upset because they couldn't find Axl.  Seems a security guard outside wouldn't
believe he was Axl and wouldn't let him until 5 minutes before showtime.  :-)

Also heard that Axl and Steve Jones are getting together to do a remake of 
the song that's on the B side of "God Save the Queen" (SexPistols).  Anyone
know the name of the B-side song?

    Axl annouced at the show in LA where they opened for the Stones
    that it would be their last show.   They did open for the Stones

    something that happened within the band, so he got extremely angry
    and walked off stage, then came back and announced that this would
    be the last time anyone saw G&R 'cuz he quit.  But they did open

    Talked to a friend of mine last night about what happened at the
    Gun's concert out west.  Seems that Axl started shouting real rude
    names out at the audience like n*gger, f*aggots, etc... Don't forget,
    Living Color is playing with them...wonder how they felt! Anyway
    seem that Izzy was apologizing for the comments when Axl turned
    around and told the rest of the band that they s*uck!  Then proceeded
    to walk of stage like the homocidal maniac that he is.  Seems what

    AXLE TO HANG UP HIS GUNS?
    
    GUNS N' ROSES frontman W Axl Rose announces his 'retirement' on
    stage in LA.
    
    the fact that GNR were a bit sloppy on the first of their four sold
    out shows supporting the Rolling Stones shouldn't come as a surprise
    to anyone.
    
    After they've been off the road for a stretch now, and put in just
    a couple of warm-up dates in some smaller venues around LA prior
    totodays's (oct 18) frst show at the city's huge Coliseum.
    
    What was surprising was that frontman Axl decided that tonight was
    the proper time to announce his retirment from GNR, and that these
    gigs with the RS would be the final shows that GNR would do.
    
    Rather than jump right in to the opening number 'It's so Easy' the
    band milled around for a few moments while Axl started off the set
    with an explanation and defense of the now infamous 'One in a million'.
     That accomplished, to a very mixed reaction from the crowd I might
    add, the music and the bombshell annoncements came pouring fourth.
    
    The fivesome followed it's so easy with Mr Brownstone.  But before
    it, Axl suggested "Certain people in the GNR organisation get their
    shit together and quit dancing with this man".
    
    Izzy and Slash each added some tasteful playing, although with Salsh
    now minus the trademark top hat that he wre during the opening song,
    it can now be revealed that the man is quickly becoming a candidate
    fr a syrup (flip note:  means he's going bald!)!  However the hair
    loss certainly hasn't affected Slash's playing which was strong
    throughout the set.
    
    Out to get me was most memorable owing to the fact that Axl took
    an unexpected tumble from the stage on to the floor below.  He fell
    a full four/five metres and attributed the mishap to "fancy footwork"
    adding: "That wasn't the type of stage dive I had in mind."
    
    A horn section featuring Duff McKagan's brother, added an interesting
    to Move to the City and if any HR/HM band can pull off using horns
    without having to succumb to trendiness and pandering to the mostly
    yupie crowd assembed here tonight, it's these GNR guys.
    
    Thngs slowed down a little for Patience but anyone expecting an
    opprtunity to catch their breath was rudely jolted back to reality
    by the thundering My Michelle.  Steven Adler and Duff layed down
    a feirce and pounding bottom end that Slash used to their advantage
    adding some fiery six-string flourishes.
    
    During Rocket Queen, the band broke down into an extended middle
    section breakdown, which saw Axl take on bass chores and Duff move
    over to add some more muscle to Adler's percussion work.
    
    the one-two punch of Sweet Child... and Welcome... had everyone
    moving and singing along.  Knocking on heavens door closed the
    procedings.
    
    "Since you're the biggest LA crowd we've ever played in front of,
    you better be the loudest," admonished Axl and the atmosphere in
    the crowd reached fever pitch.
    
    Of course, the band returned for an encore - a frantic run through
    f 'Paradise City'.
    
    then Axl made his stunning announcement: that he was 'retiring'
    and that these were GNR's final shows.  He threw his microphone
    to the floor, and GNR left the boards for parts unknown.  "Have
    a nice life..." was Axl's pating comment.
    
    Backstage, DLR was on hand to take the singer aside and offer some
    calming words as Axl threw another of his 'mood-swings'.  so now
    the wondering starts.....
    
    Later in the evening, Mick Jagger told the crowd: "I don't know
    what's the matter with Axl tonight, but we dedicate this next number
    to him.  We all have these things but we don't talk about them
    onstage!"  After which the Stones launched into 'Mixed emotions'!
    
    STOP PRESS:  Before the show on October 19, Salsh took the Mic to
    make a speech about drug and heroin abuse, apologising for his own
    transgressions......

    My prediction for G&R is that they aren't going to be able to top
    APD anyway, and worse yet that the new album, if they make it that
    far, will be nothing at all.  I just feel that these guys are a
    one album thing and that this is as far as it is going.  I don't
    really cars for them anyway, they really are sloppy live, no matter
    how far into a tour they are (re: earlier letter explaining that
    they have been off for sometime)  I saw these guys at the Channel
    with EZO and EZO made G&R look like an amatuer group.  IMHO, these
    guys are unprofessional, egotistical and nothing to represent HM
    people by.  To be up on stage in front of one person or one hundred
    thousand people is a privledge, not a right.  And that is exactly
    how G&R treat it, like its their right.  Just my two cents.
    
    Mr. Ed... by the way Axl was yelling it at the audience for who
              ever asked a few notes back.
    

    When I saw them opening for Alice Cooper they were REAL sloppy and
    tried to make up for it by having their amps up REAL loud, making
    them sound loud and sloppy. Slash should have passed out he was
    so fudged up.

    When my daughter saw them, Axl said his voice was off 'cause he
    had a cold.  Awwwwwwwwww!  Don't we all feel sorry for him!!!! 
    This show was over a month after they were live on T.V. (I think
    it was the MTV awards) and he sounded like s*%t then too.  In fact,
    it seems like he's had this cold since the first time they've performed
    live.  Gee, he should see a doctor.

    attitude.  They come off like their Gods gift to rock & roll.  As to
    the success or failure of their next album, I'm not making any
    predictions.  I think that these guys are too unpredictable to tell.

    and waved his thumb from axl to the back stage.  (really he did!) 
    	axl had on this cool jacket (skeleton)... shoulda worn shades

    on one song (axl and mick) which i can't remember "salt from the
    sea"? (agagga!, nah!), izzy stayed in the background the whole time
    and soon axl was gone with a thank you from mick (loud crowd support
    for axl)..
    	clapton played on "li'l red rooster", had a jammin solo, then
    this old blues dude that the stones used to go see when they were
    little played/sang (sorry for lack of names/references).
    	the special surprises?? on honky tonk women these 2 masive blow
    up dolls (and when i say massive...) popped out... umm, they did
    some special camera work.
    
    	all in all the stage was undescribable... two massive screens
    on each side of trump plaza.  the stage was HUGE.  just.. quality
    :)
    	the stones were great, they played 27 songs (i have the list
    at home) in all.. the encore was Jumpin' Jack Flash.
    	The concert was 2 hours and 50 minutes in all (minus the 8-8:30
    crap talking about the tour)..  I have it on videotape and will
    lend it out if anyone wants to see it.

    They go into the studio, they sneak out the back door (or in Axl's own
    words, dowa), then the studio band records the songs.  I think the
    studio band is made up of most of the highly talented artist that
    recorded the hit "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies. :^) :^) :^)

    GnR won the Heavy Metal category at the American Music Awards tonight.
    Duff and Slash accepted the award.  After the smashed Slashed said
    the dreaded "F" word twice before he could manage to accept the
    award, they quickly went to a comercial break.  And get this, they
    beat Aerosmith and Motley Crue.  Gee, I think I *almost* would have
    rather seen Jethro Tull get it.  
    
    These guys were a pitiful choice to represent Heavy Metal.  They
    were every negative stereotype you can imagine, all rolled up in
    a nice little package for the top 40 world to rip to shreds.  Thanks

	 Gn'R did deserve to win it.  AFD is a rockin' album and got a
	 lot of airplay.  It really brought Gn'R onto the scene in a
	 big way and because of it, they got quite a bit of

	 of your life, its hard, in the excitement of things, it's
	 hard to not "be yourself."  Slash never professes to be
	 clean and NKOTBish.  So, it didn't really surprise me.  I'm

    It really torks me off that any adult person who watched that lame-O
    show is gonna think that ALL metal heads are brainless-

    would still be the same since they have a reputation for booze and

    going to come out of this is when radio stations and parents tell
    their kids that they can't listen to G&R because of that, they will

    Say what you will, but I've *never* seen as much GnR discussion going
    on as there has been since those awards.  You should see the extended
    (distended?) discussion on that show in MUSIC notes...
    
    You may call it stupid for Slush, but I call it free publicity.  They
    also hit the national news just because he did something dumb.  Face
    it, publicity works whether it's positive or negative.  He probably
    sold a ton of albums for them as a result of that!

    and wanted to be just like Mark Farner from Grand Funk Railroad.  I
    idolized him and the band, and they had a lot of influence on me during
    those years.  I personaly could give a *$^# about GnG, but the
    influence they have on teens (ans pre-teens) is bad news with the image
    they project.

    I heard Steve Adler on the radio last Friday.  He said the next album
    (CD, whatever...) will have 40 to 50 songs on it and will be out sometime
    towards the end of this summer.

    As far as Slash on the AMA, I don't see what the big deal is all about.
    If you actually listen to the words he said, he was just thanking a bunch
    of people and then got cut off.  It's not like anyone hasn't heard that
    word before.  He wasn't saying anything bad about anybody, and he didn't
    say it any louder than the rest of his speech.  As far as Duff, I can't
    see what he did wrong.  I didn't even think they were drunk.  Sure they had
    a few drinks, but it takes more than a few to get these guys drunk.  They
    say they weren't drunk then noone believes them.  Guilty until proven

    One more thing, whether they want to be roll models for the younger
    generation or not, they are.  Personaly, the only song that I've heard
    from them that I like is Welcome to the Jungle.  So, no matter what
    their attitude, I wouldn't like them anyway.  Their attitude just
    compounds things.  If I had a choise of who I wouldn't want my kids to
    model themselves after, GNR wouldn't be on that list, for sure.

    drums, no Martin Chambers).   They played a song off the upcoming album
    called "Civil War" and a cover of UK Subs "Down on the Farm".  I
    thought that they sounded alright, Axl's voice was clear.  As they left
    Axl said "Good F***in' Night" and immediately TNN went to a shot of
    their logo and killed the sound.  Someone in the MUSIC notesfile
    mentioned that they thought they heard Dick Clark moan at this point.

I hope they don't lose their raw sound by adding a bunch of keyboard stuff.  
Seems that with keyboards comes more production and with more production 
comes even more production and you end up with this glossy sounding product
that sounds nothing like the band.

One of the big appeals of GnR for me is the raw energy they put into the 
music.  If they lost that, they'd have virtually no appeal left for me.

    sound.  Part of the appeal of the band was it's ability to mix
    simplicity with raw energy.  By complicating the sound and adding
    more people they run the risk of trivializing their music.  I did
    not say this would happen.  Unlike you, I am waiting for the album
    to come out before I pass judgement.

heavy-metal band, Guns N' Roses, filed for divorce Thursday from his
wife of less than a month.
	Rose was married April 28 to Erin Everly, daughter of one of the
Everly Brothers -- a popular duo in the 1960s. The couple separated
Thursday, the divorce petition said.
	The petition, which states irreconcileable differences, asks a
judge to determine property rights.
	Also Thursday, Guns N' Roses Music Co. was one of nine music
companies that filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in U.S. District
Court in Los Angeles against Passipizza Inc. of Irvine over its song,
``Paradise.''
	Guns N' Roses' biggest hits are ``Child O'Mine,'' and ``Welcome to
the Jungle'' from the group's ``Appetite for Destruction'' album and
``Patience'' from its ``GNR Lies'' album.
	The group's song, ``One in a Million,'' has outraged some groups
who allege its lyrics are racist and anti-homosexual.

There are a couple new studio songs out now by Guns 'n' Roses that we've 
previously heard live. One is a studio version of "Knockin' On Heaven's 
Door" (not nearly as obnoxious as the live version), and the other is a 
studio version of "Civil War", the new song they played at Farm-Aid.

Not sure if they are available commercially yet (I would guess not), but 
the radio stations got them about 2 weeks ago.

    OK, so I'm the last to hear it, but I usually keep things in the
    lab quiet as it's more condusive for deluding.
    But, since I wanted to hear about the war, I got 'Bcn on.
    I just heard 'Knocking on Heaven's door' by Guns and roses,
    and in my opinion it is the LAMEST tune I have EVER heard from them.
    Why? It's too slow. 
    	 The vocals are now in high-definition AXEL_VISION (tm),
    	   meaning they have more compression and delay on them,
    	   which to me spells over-produced.
         The 4 measures of Piano or so add nothing to the total effect.
    	 The background singers sound awful and again serve no purpose in
    	  the total sound
         The telephone noise in the background, what is he saying? 
    		Do they have the phone there because they were bored with
    		the tune even while recording it? 
    	 
    Axl has lost his edge, what was once a hungry dog is now a well-fed
    pup.
    
    So long, I need this session now..
    	

    Back to the topic.
     This tune lacks something GnR had in the last album a gritty raw
     I-don'-give-a-honk take it like it is feeling.
     It's just too slick. 
     If the next album sounds like this tune, it's gonna bomb big-time, 
    and ol'e axl-head will be taking a temper tantrum and probably
    dump more members. 
     The 1 thing I did like is still Slash, he still has a nice sound,
    But the rest of it is lame. 
    Delusions of greatness have ruined more than 1 rock band.
    I hope Axl dosen't forget he's just another musician, or
    you can say so-long to these guys.
    Or maybe not, considering the airplay Heart is getting with a horrible
    tune recently. Well, so much for my creative input only a few days
    before HM goes down the drain.

    The album release is being held up for two reasons:
    
    1) The band may break up at any moment, of which an album release would
       be senseless ie no tour!
    
    2) They can;t agree on songwriting credits (ie, who gets the money!)

    to hit) a woman over the head with a wine bottle.  Apparently, the woman 
    complained about music being played loudly in an apartment where AR was.  
    AR took the woman's keys and dropped them from the balcony they were on.
    He then emptied a wine bottle and started swinging.
    
    	Bail was set at $5000.

metal band Guns 'N Roses, was arrested early Tuesday for allegedly
bashing a neighbor woman over the head with a wine bottle, authorities
said.
	The altercation occurred at the condominium building where they both
live, sheriff's Deputy John Ashley said.
	Gabriela Kantor, 37, was returning to her condo when Rose confronted
her in a hallway, Ashley said.
	``Words were exchanged between the two of them,'' he said. ``Rose
took Kantor's keys away from her and threw them off the 12th floor to
the ground below.''
	``Rose then took a bottle of wine away from Kantor and emptied the
contents (onto the floor) and then hit her over the head with the
bottle,'' Ashley said.
	Kantor was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was
treated for a concussion and was held for observation, Ashley said.
	Rose was arrested inside his condo and booked at the West Hollywood
sheriff's station on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Bail was
set at $5,000.
	Ashley said Kantor and Rose have been involved in an on-going dispute
over the past few months about the loud music she claimed he was
playing.
	``Apparently the source of this is (that) Rose knows that she has
been the source of deputies coming to the location on prior occasions,''
Ashley said.

       Before heading off to Decland today I read the Stolling Rone
    interview with Slash.....it's actually 3 pages long! I thought they'd
    run out of topics besides the use of the "F" word. I didn't realize
    he was an A student and a music major in college....just kiddin'! It
    was a good article though. Slash talked about drugs,the new album,and
    the band. Looks like they have plenty of material to spread out over
    3-4 releases.

    SLASH - THE ROLLING STONE INTERVIEW
    
    Taken without permission from Rolling Stone Magazine, Issue 596,
    January 1991.
    
    
    Double Jack Daniel's and Coke, easy on the ice, with finger sandwiches. 
    Five-fifteen Saturday afternoon at Le Chardonnay, the Los Angeles
    restaurant modeled on a Parisian *art nouveau* bistro, and there sits
    Slash, lead guitarist for Guns n' Roses, calmly talking in an ornate
    side room.
    
    "Try these, they're good," he says as a waiter brings over a plate of
    pastries.  He nibbles the little tarts and slowly nurses his drink
    while speaking quite lucidly and soberly, in contrast to his infamous
    reputation as a Dionysian waste case.  But Slash, who recently turned
    twenty-five, remains an outsider in this upper-crust environment. 
    Despite his new-found millions and sterling position in L.A.'s rock
    hierarchy, he still can't get a last-minute dinner reservation at this
    ritzy restaurant after the inteview session is over.  No big deal.  He
    and his steady girlfriend eat somewhere else that night, then stop by a
    decadent sex shop called the Pleasure Chest to pick up some Christmas
    presents, including a straitjacket for the band's singer, Axl Rose.
    
    The last few months of 1990 have been hectic for Slash.  In addition to
    putting finishing touches on Guns n' Roses' second album, he has been
    rehearsing with the band for an appearance at the Rock in Rio II
    concert this month in Brazil.  In fact, Slash has been working almost
    nonstop for the past year.  The group did a gig at Farm Aid III,
    contributed material to the *Days of Thunder* soundtrack and the
    *Nobody's Child* charity project and recorded more than thirty Guns
    songs for the new album.  In addition, Slash has played sessions with
    Iggy Pop, Bob Dyland, Michael Jackson and Lenny Kravitz, among others. 
    This year should be even more intense:  Once Guns n' Roses' album is
    finally released, the band plans to embark on a monstrous worldwide
    tour, the group's first trek since 1988 and - amazingly - the first time
    the Gunners have played arenas as heaadliners.
    
    It's been a long time coming.  Slash, whose real name is Saul Hudson,
    has been a resident of Los Angeles since his parents moved to America
    from England in teh early Seventies.  Slash's mom, a professional
    costume designer named Ola Hudson, tailored outfits for such acts as
    John Lennon, Diana Ross and the Pointer Sisters, while his artist
    father, Anthony Hudson, crated album covers for clients that included
    Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.  Raised in the neo-hippie environs of
    Laurel Canyon - which he still calls home - young Saul's own creative
    insticts were nurtured early on.  He was a enthusiastic artist and even
    contributed a series of animal illustrations to *The Bestiary*, an
    unplishedbook of verse written by Joni Mitchell, who was a neighbor.
    
    "He was drawing from the time he could pick up a pencil," says Ola
    Hudson, who adds that he was weaned on her Led Zeppelin albums and
    raised in a very loving household.  "I've been shocked at a lot of
    things I've read where it sounds like I left him on somebody's doorstep
    ina basket.  They make it seem as if henever had a family and grew up
    on the streets like an urchin, but that's not true.  It's just part of his
    image.  He's not all leather and tattoos."
    
    When his folks split up in the mid-Seventies, Slash had to get used to
    an unusual father figure - David Bowie.  "My mom dated Bowie right
    after my parents broke up," he says.  "I hung out with him and his wife
    and their son, Zowie, when I was real young.  I really didn't like him
    that much, because he was the new guy in the house.  I was really
    resentful."  These days, Slash has reconciled with Bowie and often
    spends time with him when their schedules permit.
    
    If home life as a teenage seemed tilted, school was even worse.  Shy
    and alienated, Slash preferred drawing pictures of dinosaurs or racing
    BMX bicycles to doing his homework.  "I had long hair, and the schools
    I went to were filled with kids of bankers and real-estate agents," he
    says.  "It wasn't like any of them came from the same background I had."
    
    Repeatedly kicked out of school, Slash was a loner who never had many
    friends until he picked up the guitar.  "The kids around me changed,
    and suddenly Igot more popular because I was a guitar player," he says. 
    He first became intrigued with the instrument after some coaxing from
    Steven Adler, a fellow BMX racer who later served as Guns n' Roses'
    drummer.
    
    Before Guns n' Roses, Slash gigged with several bar bands and served a
    short stint in an all-black funk ensemble.  Then he hooked up with
    Adler and Indiana exiles W. Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin in a succession
    of rock outfits until 1985, when the four teamed up with bassist Duff
    McKagan and formed Guns n' Roses.
    
    Aftern the enormous success of Guns n' Roses' debut album, *Appetite
    for Destruction*, and the follow-up EP, *G n' R Lies*, the group found
    itself facing serious trouble.  For starters, the band was ostracized
    because of the lyrics in the *G n' R Lies* song "One in a Million,"
    which included references to "faggots" and "niggers."  The charges of
    racism particularly affected Slash, whose father is white and mother is
    black.  "When Axl first came up with the song and really wanted to do
    it, I said I didn't think it was very cool," says Slash.  "But Axl gets
    very adamant about expressing himself, and his lyrics are very direct. 
    He's very honest, and he's got his reasons...I don't regret doing 'One
    in a Million,' I just regret what we've been through because of it and
    the way people have perceived our personal feelings."
    
    Besides the furor over "One in a Million," a number of other crises
    threatened the band.  Several members, including Slash, developed drug
    problems.  The group began to slowly splinter, and it became difficult
    to organize sessions for a new album.  An attempt to hold a series of
    rehearsals in Chicago failed miserably; a later effort to reunite to
    perform dates with the Rolling Stones led to Axl's threatening to
    quit; and Adler was dismissed last summer when he couldn't straighten
    himself out.
    
    Eventually the band carried on.  The Cult drummer Matt Sorum was
    recruited to replace Adler, and together with Slash, McKagan, Sradlin
    and keyboardist Dizzy Reed, the group laid down instrumental tracks for
    its new album last fall; all that remained at press time were the
    completion of Axl's vocals and the mixing chores.  Following some of
    the interview sessions, Slash proudly played rough but nonetheless
    impressive mixes of the band's new material - a Stonesy song feature
    Stradlin called "Dust and Bones,", a short catchy number titled "Double
    Talkin' Jive," a punkish tune dubbed "Shotgun Blues," a song about an
    Axl overdose entitled "Coma" and a duet between Axl and Alice Cooper on
    "The Garden".  Additional songs recorded for the album include
    "Estranged," "Bad Apples", "Back Off Bitch", "14 Years", "Locomotive",
    "Perfect Crime", "Don't Damn Me", "Ain't Goin' Down", "You Ain't the
    First", "So Fine", "Don't Cry" and "Why Do You Look at Me?"
    
    The interview with Slash took course over several different sessions,
    some held early in 1990 and the most recent ones conducted last month at
    Le Chardonnary and at his home, which is nestled in Laurel Canyon. 
    Throughout every meeting, the guitarist was jovial, unassuming and -
    above all - focused.  Although he didn't mind opening up about his
    personal life or his feelings about the other band members, he was
    clearly obsessed with finishing the new album.  Still, he was reluctant
    to lay on a load of hype.  "All you have to do is listen to it," he
    says of the album.  "If you like it, you like it, and if you don't we
    did it and that's it."
    
    
    
    SLASH:  First of all, I refuse to talk about drugs, Axl or any other
    bands.  Period.  (He smiles.)
    
    
    WELL, OKAY, THEN LET'S TALK ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM.  WHY IS IT CALLED 'USE
    YOUR ILLUSION'?
    
    It's the title of a painting by some controversial artist.  I don't
    know who.  I've never heard of him.  I don't keep up with art circles. 
    But that's the name of this painting that Axl bought, and he said,
    "Let's make this the cover of the album."  Like the last album cover, we
    just said, "Fine," no discussion.
    
    HOW MUCH MATERIAL HAVE YOU RECORDED SO FAR?
    
    Thirty-five songs.  Thirty-five of the most self-indulgent Guns n'
    Roses songs....It's a lot of material to work with - like four albums'
    worth.  For most bands, it would take four to six years to come up with
    this much stuff.
    
    THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF RUMOURS ABOUT WHETHER IT WILL BE A SINGLE
    ALBUM, A DOUBLE ALBUM, EVEN A BOXED SET.  WHAT'S ACTUALLY HAPPENING AT
    THIS POINT?
    
    Well, this is like cleaning out the closet.  There's a ton of material
    we want to get out, and the problem is, how does one release all of it? 
    You don't make some kid go out and buy a record for seventy dollars if
    it's your second record.  We're trying to think of a way to distribute
    the material where each of the four discs of material can be separated,
    so you can buy the whole thing or you can buy just one.  But since it's
    not released yet, nothing is etched in stone.  It might change, and I
    don't want to mislead anybody.  I know the thing that it's *not* going
    to be is one big boxed set, where you have to buy the entire thing or
    nothing.  I can tell you that much.
    
    THERE'S BEEN SPECULATION THAT ONE ALBUM MIGHT BE RELEASED IN MARCH OR
    APRIL, THEN A DOUBLE ALBUM LATER THIS YEAR, FOLLOWED BY ANTOHER SINGLE
    ALBUM IN 1992.  THERE HAVE ALSO BEEN REPORTS OF AN EP FEATURING COVER
    VERSIONS OF VARIOUS PUNK SONGS.
    
    An EP is probably the direction we're going to go as far as some of the
    covers are concerned.  There are six covers:  "Live and Let Die," by
    Wings, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," by Dylan - that new version (on the
    soundtrack for *Days of Thunder*) that wwnt nowhere - "Don't Care About
    You", by Fear, "Attitude", by the Misfits, "New Rose", by the
    Damned, and "Down on the Farm", by U.K. Subs.  They're songs that we like
    - it's as basic as that.  Each of us has an individual favorite, and at
    the same time we share some.  "New Rose" is something Duff wanted to do,
    I think.  "Don't Care About You" is something I wanted.  The Misfits
    song was Axl's idea, and "Heaven's Door" and "Live and Let Die" were
    songs Axl and I both thought about doing.
    
    IN TERMS OF THE ORIGINAL MATERIAL YOU'VE RECORDED, IS THERE ANY
    SPECIFIC THEME OR UNIFYING MESSAGE?
    
    I'd have to say no.  I will say it leans more to the darker side. 
    There's not a tone of really happy material on it, you know?  Most of
    it is pretty f(cking pissed off.  It's very pissed off, and it's very
    heavy, and then there's also a subtlety to it as far as us really
    trying to play.
    
    HOW TO THE SONGS REFLECT THE CHANGES THAT THE BAND HAS GONE THROUGH
    OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS?
    
    The way our lives turned around, the repercussions of our success and
    the general sh(t that we do from day to day gets brought up a lot. 
    There are a lot of semi-humorous drug tunes and a few songs about love
    going in whichever direction.  Regardless of whether it sounds like the
    blues or not, basically that's what it is.  It's a strange thing.  I
    never thought we were a naive band; I always thought we were pretty hip
    to what's going on.  But when we used to just hang out on the street, it
    was more fun than when we had lots of money and because part of society
    and were forced to deal with responsibilities.  I think money is like
    the central nerve of it all, too.  It's like I think Jimi Hendrix said
    - "The more money you make, the more blues you can sing."

    'APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION' WAS PRETTY MUCH A HARD-ROCK ALBUM, WHILE THE
    'G N' R LIES' LP INCLUDED SEVERAL ACOUSTIC SONGS.  WILL THERE BE ANY
    RADICAL MUSICAL DEPARTURES ON THE NEW ALBUM?
    
    There'll eb a lot of different instruments.  I've got guitars doing all
    different kidns of sound and things.  There are horns on "Live and Let
    Die."  We didn't get into sampling, but right now, as we speak, Axl is
    in the studio with a rack of synthesizers, so we don't have to bring in
    an orchestra for a couple of songs.  There might even be a bunch of
    kids singleon "November Rain," because it's that kind of song.  It's
    very angelic.  We'll do whatever it takes to make the songs as powerful
    as possible.
    
    A CHILDREN'S CHOIR, HORNS, SYNTHESIZERS - IT SOUNDS LIKE THE GROUP IS
    HEADING IN A NEW DIRECTION.
    
    It's not a change in direction; I don't thing we ever had a real
    direction.  Bt we have gotten a little bit more experimental, I guess. 
    I hate that word - we've just been doing sh(t, whatever we felt like
    doing.  This album goes from one extreme to the other, from some very,
    very intensely raunchy, over-the-top stuff to being very mellow - and
    everything in between.
    
    ANY THOUGHTS FOR A SINGLE AT THIS STAGE?
    
    I don't think there are any singles on this record.
    
    WHY NOT?
    
    I don't mean to rock the boat or anything, but I think there's a
    swearword of some sort on every song.  Every potential single it's
    like, whoops, oh, well, not that one.  But there's some great songs,
    and I don't care if they say "f(cking" in it or if they say "sh(t" or
    if they're talking about girls in a way we're not supposed to.
    
    WILL THE ALBUM CARRY A WARNING STICKER?
    
    Axl doesn't agree with stickering.  I don't care - I think the sticker
    is fine.  It gives it a little sense of danger.
    
    ARE THERE PLANS FOR A TOUR?
    
    We're slated for a two-year tour starting in April.  We'll go to New
    Zealand, Australia and Japan, then to the United States, where we'll
    branch out to all those places we haven't done yet.  We'll got to Europe
    and play Wembley (in London), I think, then go to Japan for one gig and
    then come back to the States.  That's just off the top of my head. 
    We'll do arenas here, and then we'll come back and do coliseums.
    
    WILL THERE BE A SPONSOR?
    
    I'm willing to do it if there are no dumb ads and no dumb commercials. 
    I want to do Black Death Vodka.  Axl turned me on to it.  I want Black
    Death Vodka to call me, becuse I'll sponsor them.  Just me personally.
    
    WHAT ABOUT THE BAND?  YOUR MANAGERS HAVE SUPPOSEDLY BEEN TALKING TO
    CIGARETTE AND BEER COMPANIES ABOUT SPONSORING THE TOUR.
    
    I guess we're doing it, but I dont want to sell out.  I don't want to
    be the next Janet Jackson, M.C. Hammer, f(cking Eric Clapton or whoever
    else.  We're doing a tour, and if they want to help pay fo it, we'll
    use their name - we'll put banners up all over the gig, I don't give a
    shit.  If there's free cigarettes and free beer and they help pay for
    the tour, I dont care.  But I'm not wearing a Budweiser T-shirt.  I
    don't care if we do our own photos and it says "Budweiser" or
    "Marlboro" on the bottom of the page, but I don't want to do anything
    wehre I'm holding up something with a big smile on my face. 
    
    AREN'T YOU CONCERNED ABOUT A BACKLASH FROM THE FANS?
    
    I don't think the fans will care.  They all drink Budweiser and smoke
    Marlboros.  I was worried about the parents and what they'd say about
    the cigarettes, but it's like some of the most influential personalties
    in baseball, football, baseketball and race-car driving do ads.  I
    mean, I advertise smoking constantly anyway; I can't help it.  I don't
    see why cigarettes are any worse than beer. 
    
    SPEAKING OF BOOZE, LET'S GO BACK TO THIS TIME LAT YEAR AND THE AMERICAN
    MUSIC AWARDS.  YOU GAINED NATIONAL HEADLINES WHEN YOU NONCHALANTLY SAID
    "F(CK" ON LIVE TELEVISION.  WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED THAT NIGHT?
    
    The f(cking music awards....What happened was I got this phone call the
    day of the show asking if I wanted to go.  We were nominated for two
    awards, and someone from the band needed to accept if we won.  So me
    and Duff and our girlfriends all got drunk and flipped on down there
    after a stop at Carl Jrs.  When we arrived, it was mass confusion, the
    whole *paparazzi* think.  I really didn't give a sh(t; I just wanted to
    hang out and have a good time.  Anyway, we had third-row seats, and the
    show was real cheesy and boring.  We were smoking and drinking wine,
    and all of a sudden we won this award.  We weren't ready for it.  I dont
    know what I said onstange, but it was short and sweet.  I dont think
    there were too many "f(cks" in it.  Then we went backstage.  I met
    Lenny Kravitz, which was cool, but Prince blew us off.  He and his
    entourage just ignored us when we walked by.  He didn't say anything,
    and he probably didn't know who we were.  I don't think we're what he'd
    call good company, and I really didn't care.  He looked like a fag that
    night anyway.  Afterward, we went back to our seats, and when the
    second award came, it was totally unexpected.  I got up to the
    microphone and started to thank the people who helped us out over the
    years.  I said "f(cking" again, and I knew it was live television, so I
    said, "Oops."  But it just slipped out again and again and again.  Once
    I started, that was it.  It was just like using an adjective.
    
    WHY DID YOU GET SO BOMBED IF YOU KNEW YOU MIGHT HAVE TO APPEAR ON LIVE
    TV?
    
    I wasn't really drunk.  All I had was wine.  I had, like, two glasses
    of wine during the show, and I wasn't that f(cked up.  That's just me -
    really, you have to know how I am, especially when I'm in a crowd of
    people.  All this attention is focused on you, and I get very shy.  I
    don't know why, but I can't approach a public situation like that
    withough loosening up.  That night, I didn't wear my hat, I didn't have
    a guitar to hide behind, and I wasn't performing.  You walk into one of
    these places, and you feel almost like you're being X-rayed.  Besides,
    I sort of wanted us to be the f(ckups there, becuse everybody else was
    so polite and stuff and unnatural.  We were trying to have a good time,
    and I think out of all the people there, we were the only ones who
    weren't putting on a facade.
    
    A FEW MONTHS BEFORE THE AMAS, THERE WAS ANOTHER FIASCO WHEN THE BAND
    OPENED UP FOR THE ROLLING STONES IN LOS ANGELES AND NEARLY BROKE UP IN
    THE PROCESS.  WHAT LED TO THOSE SHOWS?
    
    At the time I was at the tail end of a really, really serious heroin
    problem.  I felt the band had to do the Stones gigs to bring us back
    together.  We were all living in our separate houses, no one saw
    anybody, I was doing my thing, and only three of us were going to
    rehearsals on a regular basis.  So I said "Yeah, let's do the gig," even
    though our management was against it.  I made an agreement with the
    band that after the Stones shows were over, I'd clean up.  That was
    agreed upon and understood.
    
    THE NIGHT OF THE FIRST STONES DATE, AXL WENT ONSTAGE AND ALLUDED THAT
    DRUGS WERE DESTROYNG THE GROUP.  HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU HEARD THAT?
    
    I was about to walk off.  I was pissed.  We finished the show, and it
    was one of those nights where everybody had their little part of the
    stage and just stayed there.  The show sucked, it was lousy, and then
    Axl announced hw was going to quit.
    
    BUT HE RETURNED THE NEXT NIGHT, AND THINGS SEEMED TO IMPROVE AFTER YOU
    GAVE A LITTLE SPEECH ABOUT DOPE.  WERE YOU PRESSURED INTO MAKING THOSE
    REMARKS?
    
    Axl said he wouldn't perform unless I agreed to go up and do what he
    called apologize, which I refused to do.  I said what I said, and he
    came out, and it was very warm because what I said was totally honest. 
    It wasn't an apology; it was sort of an explanation.  No, not even that
    - I just opened up and said what I felt about heroin and what it does
    to people, who it's killed and how wrong it is.  Because that's how I
    felt.  But I was a junkie at the same time.
    
    WHEN DID YOU FIRST USE HEROIN?
    
    I started sometime during the very beginnings of the band.  I got
    turned on to it, and that was the beginning of the end, I guess.  The
    first time I did it, I smoked it, and then I snorted it once.  But the
    first time I really got high, I shot.  I was that kind of junkie -
    snorting it wasn't enough and smoking it wasn't enough.  Anyway, it's
    one of those drugs where it's a great high and you love being on it,
    and it really f(cks your life up.  It's unfortunate that something as
    f(cking menial as a little pile of powder can do that, but it does
    happen.
    
    WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS THE LOWEST YOU EVER SANK?
    
    On heroin, the lowest was going to the Rainbow (an L.A. nightclub) to
    borrow money, so I could score - sh(t like that.  But I wasn't only a
    heroin junkie, I was a coke junkie, too, and I used to trip out really
    hard.  The lowest I went was alittle f(cking episode in Phoenix, where
    I flipped out on coke, destroyed a hotel room and was all bloody,
    running around the hotel naked and sh(t.  Some people tried to press
    charges, and the cops and paramedics came, but fortunately I lied my
    way out of it. 
    
    HAVE YOU EVER OVERDOSED?
    
    I've OD'd so many times.  I've woken up in the hospital so many f(cking
    times.  I don't like to get into it, but I've been through some sh(t. 
    I've been in jail over drugs.  You'd think things like that would make
    you stop, but they don't. 
    
    WHAT FINALLY CAUSED YOU TO QUIT?
    
    Because the one think I care about he most in my life - the band - was
    blowing apart.  That was the major incentive.  Otherwise, I was
    perfectly comfortable just relaxing on a high, hanging out with my
    snakes and stuff.
    
    IT'S BEEN ABOUT A YEAR OR SO SINCE YOU'VE STOPPED SHOOTING DOPE.  ANY
    TEMPTATIONS TO USE HARD DRUGS AGAIN?
    
    The closest I've had to anything like that is I've dreamed about it a
    couple of times.  Nightmares.  Some pretty bad ones.  But that's about
    it.
    
    WERE YOU EVER IN A DETOX CLINIC?
    
    They tried to put me into rehab, but I left in three days.  I was real
    pissed off and came back home, got loaded, then went to Hawaii and
    cleaned up.  I've been clean ever since.
    
    WHAT WAS WITHDRAWAL LIKE THAT LAST TIME?
    
    I had a pretty bad habit, so kicking was always rough.  The physical
    part of it is bad enough, but the anxiety part is the worst.  But I
    don't see why the subject of kicking dope is such a big deal.  It's
    personal, really.  It's like asking how I got to the bathroom or what
    do I wash first when I take a shower.  As far as I'm concerned, I don't
    think it's anybody's business.  I don't want to be another Keith
    Richards.  His whole history with drugs has been so heavily publicized,
    and he's spoken so candidly about it when he was f(cked up because he
    though it was cool, I guess.  What happens is those stories never go
    away....It's a very sensitive subject.  But it's a subject that you
    don't try and put across to how many millions of people who read this
    magazine who don't do it or haven't been through it.  It's like one of
    probably the most disastrous things that a human being can go through. 
    It's like sitting on your deathbed all the time.
    
    YOU'VE ALSO HAD SEVERE ALCOHOL PROBLEMS.  HOW BAD DID YOUR DRINKING
    GET?
    
    I seriously used to go through one and two bottles of Jack Daniel's a
    night.  Easy.  Sometimes a half gallon.  I used to get up in the
    morning and I'd just be drunk all the time.  I passed out on the floor
    of a guitar store in England - really stupid sh(t.  It was all a
    growing experience.  I think I've learned a lot, and I think I've grown
    up a lot since then.  I don't know if it's make me any better or worse
    as a person, but I'm very hip to any drugs and alcohol now.  I know
    what they're all about.

HOW'S YOUR DRINKING THESE DAYS?

I haven't been drinking that hard if I can help it.  I still get 
overly drunk sometimes and have a good time, and it doesn't bother me.  
It's sort of pain in the ass in the morning, though.  But I still 
have my little quirks and insecurities where I go to a bottle rather 
than still have those little problems, which are part of a pattern, I 
guess.  But then I haven't been as depressed as I was.  Usually if I'm 
drinking too much, it's for a reason.  Boredom is my worst enemy, and 
I get bored really easily.  In the histroy of this band, as long as we 
were out playing, I never had a problem of any kind.  When we're 
rehearsing or recording or onstage, there's not really that much 
drinking going on, nor am I concerned about it.  I'll have a cocktail 
when I'm home or whatever, but it's as simple as that.

LAST YEAR, GUNS N' ROSES REPLACED LONG TIME DRUMMER STEVEN ADLER 
BECAUSE OF HIS SUBSTANCE ABUSE.  HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE HIS PROBLEMS?

Steven is about as rock and roll a personality as you can get.  All he 
lived for was sex, drugs and rock and roll - in that order.  Maybe 
drugs, sex and rock and roll.  Then it was drugs and rock and roll.  
Then it was just drugs.

HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN PEOPLE SAY HE WAS KICKED OUT OF THE GROUP 
UNFAIRLY?

I felt really bad for Steven.  He's saying stuff like "How could they 
do this to me?"  But it wasn't a matter of how could we do this to 
*him*.  It was how could he do this to *us*.  He was taken care of by 
this band.  Anybody who thinks we just kicked him out is just somebody 
who doesn't know what the f(ck they're talking about and doesn't know 
what went on.  We waited for him for a f(cking year.  How long is a 
band supposed to wait around?  We all wanted to get out and play, and 
he wanted to play, too.  He was just too loaded to do it.  Really, we 
did all kinds of things for this kid to get him back to normal, and he 
refused.  Every time he went into rehab, he took off.  I mean, I took 
off from rehab, but it's becauase I didn't want to be controlled by 
anybody else.  I went and cleaned up on my own.  Steven had no control 
whatsoever.  He didn't want to be in rehab and still wanted to be 
doing what he's doing.  He thought it was very rock and roll.  What do 
you tell a guy like that?  So I just said, "F(ck it, that's it, I 
can't deal with it anymore, we have to get a new drummer."

FOR A WHILE, A DRUMMER FROM THE SEA HAGS SAT IN WITH GUNS, THEN MARTIN 
CHAMBERS FROM THE PRETENDERS STEPPED IN MOMENTARILY.  HOW DID YOU 
SETTLE ON MATT SORUM FROM THE CULT?

The guy from the Sea Hags was a really cool guy, and we got along, but 
he just didn't have the right vibe.  I saw Matt at the Universal 
Ampitheater, and after a few months went by and nothing happened, it 
dawned on me that he was the best drummer I'd seen in a long time.  
So I just said, f(ck it, it couldn't hurt to try him.

Thank God I went to that show that night.  The fact that Matt could 
play and fit in was what saved us.  If we hadn't found somebody, it 
would have ultimately been the demise of the band.  Matt's been 
capable of keeping up with it, if not enhancing it totally and bring 
new stuff to it.  He still can't show up anywhere on time, though.  
(He laughs.)

WHILE MOST MEMBERS OF THE BAND HAVE HAD DIFFICULTIES HANDLING BOOZE 
AND DRUGS, AXL HAS HAD THE TOUGHEST TIME JUST DEALING WITH PEOPLE.  
HE'S HAD HASSLES WITH HIS NEIGHBOR.  HE'S HAD MARITAL WOES, CONTINUING 
CONFRONTATIONS WITH THE HOLLYWOOD POLICE AND OTHER STICKY SITUATIONS.  
HOW HAVE THESE INCIDENTS AFFECTED THE GROUP AND THE RECORDING OF THE 
ALBUM?

Well, they're a pain in the ass, and they keep things from getting 
done.  I'm the most uptight about all of this.  It's just my nature - 
Axl things I'm this sort of sick-minded workaholic.  And it's true - 
in some ways, I do get uptight.  I can get very negative about it.  
But there are moments when it (Axl's troubles) really gets in the way 
of what I think is productive, and we end up spending a lot of money.  
Sometimes I think Axl has no idea, or has a very slight idea, of what 
the financial reality is.  I mean, to me $400,000 or whatever to make 
a record is ludicrous.  Of course, if I was to say that to Axl 
outtright, he'd say I don't know what he's going through, and there'd 
be a fight right there.  That's the way we've always been - there's 
something I can't relate to or vice versa, and that's where we butt 
heads.  So I just sit there with my head between my kneeds, freaking 
out...But Axl's craziness drives me crazier than it does Axl, 
unbeknownst to him.  And that's the truth.

WHY DO YOU THINK HE GETS INTO SO MUCH TROUBLE?

Axl is like a magnet for problems.  I've never met anybody like him.  
He's the kind of guy that would get a toothbrush stuck down his throat 
because that particular toothbrush happened to be defective.

I mean, sh(t goes on with that guy, and if you talked to him, he'd 
tell you the same thing.


THE BOND BETWEEN YOU TWO OFTEN SEEMS VOLATILE.

I don't want to talk about Axl, because everybody is constantly trying 
to pit us against each other.  You know they're trying to put two 
f(cking Japanese fighting fish in the same bowl.  We've always been 
teh same.  We have our ups and downs, and we butt heads.  As long as 
I've known Axl, we've had so many differences that have been like the 
end of the line as far as we were concerned.  I think that happens 
with most singers and guitar players, or whatever that cliche is.  It 
might look a little intense on the outside, seeing all this sh(t that 
we're going through, but it makes for a tension that's - in a morbid 
kind of way - really conducive to the music we collaborate on.  But as 
far as Axl goes, he is the best singer-lyricist around.

ALTHOUGH GUNS N' ROSES TOOK AN EXTENDED HIATUS FROM RECORDING, YOU 
MADE A NUMBER OF APPERANCES ON OTHER PEOPLE'S ALBUMS LAST YEAR.  YOU 
PLAYED ON IGGY POP'S 'BRICK BY BRICK' ALBUM AND ON BOB DYLAN'S 'UNDER 
THE RED SKY'.  WHAT WAS THE DYLAN SESSION LIKE?

Don Was called me up and asked me to play with Dylan, which turned out 
to be one of those mistakes you learn from.  He must have said two 
words while I was there.  One was "Hi" and the other was "Play it like 
Django Reinhardt".  With all due respect to Django, that would have 
been a great concept had it fit the song.  The whole thing was just a 
drag.  Nothing against Dylan, because my dad liked him.  I mean, I 
grew up on Bob Dylan; he was the guy my family listened to.  And I 
never disliked him until the last five or six albums.  I did get to 
meet George Harrison while I was there, though, and that was great.  
He was doing some f(cking awesome slide playing.

DIDN'T YOU HAVE ANOTHER UNFORTUNATE RECORDING EXPERIENCE WITH MICHAEL 
JACKSON?

Michael Jackson was somebody I admire and have a lot of respect for.  
But when it came down to it, the sessions were so unorganized.  I like 
to keep a schedule and be punctual, but those dates just sat there for 
months and months until I kept thinking they didn't want to use me 
anymore.  I got a call three months later to do it as such and such a 
date, but when that date came, it wouldn't happen.  I finally went 
down and recorded some rhythm stuff for a couple of songs.  Then the 
producer said he was going to another country for a while, and I told 
him to give me a call when he got back.  But all I did was end up 
talking to his wife or his kid trying to find out what the f(ck was 
going on, and to this day I still don't know what's happening.

CLICKED WITH LENNY KRAVITZ.  AFTER YOU MET AT THE AMAS, HOW DID YOU 
START RECORDING TOGETHER?

I went down to the studio where he was in L.A., and we hung out that 
night.  He smoked pot, and I drank vodka, and we did a solo on one of 
his songs called "Fields of Joy."  I just finished recording another 
song for his new record, a song I'd originally written for Guns that 
never happened as a Guns song.  We had a great time hanging out in New 
Jersey.  The guy is so f(cking down-to-earth.  It's a pleasure to work 
with somebody like that, where there's no bullsh(t.

HAVE YOU BEEN DOING ANY OTHER SESSIONS RECENTLY?

Les Paul called me up to play on this tribute record where he's 
producing tracks by Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and all these cats.  So I 
took another song called "Burnout," which should have been a Guns 
tune, and got Iggy Pop to sing it and Kenny Aronoff to play drums.  
Duff's going to play bass, and Lenny sang back up on it.

When we were at the studio, Les Paul said to me, "You're pretty good 
when you learn how to play."  Thanks, God.  You know, that was pretty 
f(cking intense.  I just sort of, like, crept away.

I got a call from Kim Basinger to play on her record.  That was, like, 
no, okay?

I had eleven; now I have ten.  I just lost one, Clyde, who I had for 
about eight or nine years, the longest I've had any of these guys.  He 
just passed away in the back yard the night before last.  It's sort of 
a drag, because he's been through so much sh(t with me - my whole 
career.  I tried so hard to keep him alive, and he f(cking died.  I 
was depressing, because it was a bad night as it was.  I came home, I 
was pissed off about some sh(t, and I wanted to check on the snake, 
and the snake was dead.  It was like, oh, f(ck.  I stayed up all 
night.  I was just miserable, a f(cking wreck.  Nobody really 
understood.  It was, like, my snake died, and people just went, "Oh 
that's too bad."

HAD HE BEEN SICK FOR A LONG TIME?

Snakes get these incurable diseases.  It's really hard to get them 
back to normal, but I've gotten pretty good with them.  I had a vet 
coming here, and we were working with Clyde.  He lost all this weight, 
and we were force-feeding him and giving him medication.  I knew that 
Clyde was a really tough snake because he's gotten into all kinds of 
things in the past.  I mean, he got caught in the trash compactor once 
and got electrocuted and poked his eye out.  We thought hopefully 
whatever it was that kept him around that long would keep him in 
there, but he didn't make it.  He's buried out in the back yard.

BESIDES YOUR PETS, YOU'RE ALSO VERY CLOSE TO YOUR PARENTS, AND YOU 
HANG OUT WITH YOUR BROTHER ASH A LOT.  DID ANYONE ELSE IN YOUR 
FAMILY INFLUENCE YOU?


My grandmother bought me my first guitar.  I used to f(ck up around 
the house, and my grandmother would chase me around the couch.  She'd 
freak out when I'd play "Black Dog" really loud.  I wasn't ready for 
her death at all.  I think of her a lot, and she's with me all the 
time, I guess.

DESPITE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR FAMILY, YOU ONCE SAID YOU MAKE IT 
A POINT NOT TO GET CLOSE TO PEOPLE.  WHY NOT?

For the most part, it's because I don't trust anybody.  I've got a few 
close friends I trust implicitly.  But when you're dealing with people 
on this level, most of them are out to get you.  I've had a lot of 
freinds turn on me, so I'm a little jaded. I'd like to trust 
everybody, but sometimes you've been so totally taken advantage of 
that you feel like a piece of meat.


DO YOU THINK YOUR FEELINGS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE WAY YOU WERE 
RAISED?

That's a good point.  A lot of musicians are very rebellious because 
they come from a really repressed, sometimes damaging family life.  
I was really fortunate.  I come from a very loving and supportive family, 
thank God.  I could be a lot worse than I am now.

    Heard on WAAF that they have decided that its going to be a two CD
    album, cassette release with 142 min. of music!  At least thats what
    Bill Whitman said also mentioned a release date of late Jan early Feb.
    Looking forward to hear this after reading the article!

    Really?  I read just the opposite.  I thought Slash was honest and open
    about the conflicts and the way he phrased it made it sound to me as
    though the conflicts weren't as severe as I had previously thought.  I
    actually thought they might pull together after reading this
    interview, where before I was pretty sure they'd split up.

    Sorum a couple of weeks ago in L.A. and they both seemed very nice......
    not at all the image that i had of Slash before that night.......he sounds
    alot brighter in that article (.695) than he did in person, but then again,
    he had a couple of drinks.....most of the time they spent trying to get me
    to talk with a boston accent..........fun time though....../k
    p.s Axl was out in the parking lot playing "welcome to the jungle" on
    10 and in general acting like a d*ckhead..........so, you figure it

    Caught them on Rock'nRio last night on eMpTyV.  Slash and Axl are
    looking great, and sounding great as well...that's the most energetic
    I've ever seen Slash!  (Axl's put on some weight maybe?)

    I caught a replay of the Rock 'n Rio thing on MTV last night while
    flipping through the channels and got to see GnR. Overall I thought the
    band sounded pretty poor.  Sounded like they needed a couple of days of
    good old fashioned *rehersal* time!  They were real sloppy and Axls
    voice just screeched!  It reminded me how bad Axl always sounds live. 
    Somehow they manage to get the recordings ok, but he always sounds bad
    to me live.  
    
    I didn't care for the new drummer.  I can't quite put my finger on what
    it was but I thought through the whole thing that the drums didn't
    sound right.
    
    On the flip side both Axl and Slash looked great.  Axl's definatley put
    on some weight and his skin has actually seen the light of day.  He
    didn't have that pasty pale sick look he always used to.  I enjoyed
    Slashes playing too (as always).  His sound is one of my absolute
    favorite guitar tones in rock&roll today!

    I wished they played a song from the soon to be released Double Album.
    The new drummer(from the Cult,right?)looked outta place and very basic.
    Leave it to MTV to show them playing "Knockin on Heavens Door"again.
    They looked ragged and uninspired to me.
