Well, okay... so maybe YOU don't consider them heavy
metal. I don't really know how to classify them, to be
honest... I just know I like'em. I liked 'em so much I
bought several of their albums three times, and used to
keep the Dark Side Of The Moon picture disk on my turntable
at all times (though I never played it because a bubble
in the surface made it skip a lot).
I can't list the entire discology... I only really
loved two of the albums (it shouldn't be too hard to
guess what the second one is). But those two albums
were classics!
When I first saw The Wall (the movie), I thought
"Damn, they screwed up every song on the album, except
for the ones they left out!" Of course, about the sixth
time I saw the movie I started getting into it. You have
to be in the right frame of mind to really appreciate
Pink...

Let's face it Pink Floyd is not HM. They are a theme band (i.e.
Mood Music). I have yet to find a group that can enhance my mood
no matter what mood I'm in. An album for every mood. No you don't
have to be wasted to get off on Floyd....Next time you've had a
hard day put on "Wish You Were Here" and chill out.

You know what always pumped my nads about the Welk show?
It was the bubles (of course). Yeah, they little bubbles made
even LW look great, standing their pointlessly waving the
little baton...
"A-one, a-two..."
And the french horns would start in on yet another classic
rendition of 'Fir Elise' or 'Chopsticks'. Truely an amazing
show. And who were those female soloists! Mama-mea, did you
get a look at them yabos? Oh sure, they were tightly bound
in an elegant blue dress (low cut), surging and thrusting
every time she inhaled or hit a really high note! Whew!
It was more than my thirteen-year-old body could handle.
Yesy, indeed Lawrence Welk is god, but he only gets a
lowercase 'g'.

| Did any of you pick up the new Double Live Album/Tape/CD called
"Delicate Sound of Thunder"?
I did, and I'm I glad! This album is EVERYTHING that I could ever
ask for in a Live Floyd album. Incredible sound (DDD), great sound
effects. The Band was super! Total time of over 100 minutes!
Let's see, I could have listend to it about 57 times this weekend.
Yup, pretty close! I had my CD player (sony Carousel) set to replay
the 2 discs over and over again for about 2 days. I listend to
it in my sleep.
The First disc starts out with a 10+ minute version of Shine on
you crazy Diamond, and then has 6 songs from "A Momentary Lapse
of Reason" including "learning to Fly", "The Dogs of War", "on the
Turning Away", "Sorrow" and more
The Second Disc starts out with "One of these Days." I could almost
see the PIG floating over my bedroom. "one of these days, I'm going
to cut you into little pieces"
There are 7 more songs on this disc including: Wish you Were here,
Money, Time, Us and Them(disc and tape only), Another brick in the
Wall pt. II, and closing with Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell.
The album really captures the pink floyd live experience very well,
but nothing will ever match actually being there.
Also included is a very thick booklet with pictures of the stage
and various other things.
Great Album!

| re .20
Yes, for this album it is necessary. 100+ minutes of music. Pink
Floyd isn't know for holding anything back. When they do it, they
do it right!
As for the money, Releasing a double Disc set is the last thing
the record company wants to do. (It's also double album and double
tape) Doing what they did really brings sales down. ($22+ for the
disc) The Record Company probably urged them to cut out a few songs
and to bring it down to 74min (the Normal Max for CD time)
Some Independent CD companies have developed a process by which
they can fit 80min on a CD, but it's about a buck more expensive
to manufacture, resulting in $4 - $5 more for consumers.
The Total time of "THE WALL" is about 78 or so minutes, thus requireing
more than one disc (Major Companies don't like to use the new process
because not ALL disc players will play the disc)
Well there you have it.

79.25 | SYD BARRETT, 'OPEL' 1988 | COMPLX::WILLIAMS | Long as I keep growing my hair! | Tue Jun 27 1989 12:22 | 40 |
| So there I was last night in my favorite CD store scoping out what I
should spend my money on next when lo-and-behold! Is this possible?!
Here, right before my eyes is a new release by SYD BARRETT called
'Opel'!! Every song written by Syd Barrett (one was co-written) and
the album being PRODUCED by Syd Berrett!!!!! My mind quickly starts
flying back to the days of "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn". Yes,
1967, I was four years old then, acid trips were my thing but I still
had trouble understanding the 'Piper' album. Could it be possible this
is actually the same, the one and only, PINK FLOYD ORIGINAL Syd
Berrett? I quickly turn to the cute little zitty babe at the cash
register and question her about it. Of course she was just a splat on
the wall back then and is just now learning what 'tie-dye' is. "Thanks
for the help honey" and off I went to pull out my 'Piper' album.
Now for those of you who weren't even born back then, the story is that
our friend Syd was extremely into the drug scene and ended up having to
leave the band to Roger Waters, Rick Wright, and "Nicky" Mason. Almost
immediately, Roger Waters pulled David Gilmour in as lead guitarist and
the rest is well known history. In an interview (August?? Playboy or
Penthouse, 1988) with Roger Waters, Roger stated that nobody from the
band ever saw Syd after that. Stories were that he had gone into the
dumps with drugs. One day when the band was recording ('Animals' I think
it was) some fat balding man came in and watched for a bit and left.
The band members later found out that it was actually Syd. Not a
single one of them had recognized him!! He was never seen since then.
Could it be that Syd had been collecting mega-royalties ever since then
and now has cleaned up his act and opened his own production company?
The name spelling 'Syd Berrett' is the same as on the 'Piper' album but
the picture of the person on the 'Opel' album didn't look like any
fat, balding man. But what are the chances of a musician having the
same name as the original Syd and also having enough money to start his
own production company?? Interesting.
Maybe I'll just buy that 'Opel' album and see if I can understand it.
If I can't then I'll know it's our old friend Syd Barrett. If it is,
and I hope it is, my hat is off to him for his return to the music
world!!
Hammer.

79.27 | Not A Very New Release | YUPPY::COFFEYS | | Fri Jul 14 1989 09:02 | 3 |
| As far as I know, 'Opel' was released a long long time ago by Syd
Barrett (the very same one as was in the Floyd). Perhaps its just
been released on CD?

The way I understand it, the "Opel" album is a compilation of Syd's
songs that didn't make it onto his other solo albums.
I think that some of the songs may from sessions recorded for the
radio, but don't quote me. I have heard a track called Opel before.
As for the remaining Floyd members never having seen Barrett again,
didn't Roger Waters help produce "The Madcap Laughs"?
Or did I dream it?

| I heard the interview where he discussed the issue. It was on a sindicated

band member, discussing the making of a classic album (ie. Waters talking
about the 'The Wall', Clapton about 'Derek and the Dominoes', Don Henley about
'Hotel California', etc.).
Anyways - Waters did *not* say that he wants to re-record 'The Wall' album.
Just that he thought it would be appropriate to perform it again in front of
the Berlin Wall. And for the event, he would rewrite some of the lyrics to the
songs, and add new ones.
I dunno whether it would ever happen, but it would certainly make a trip to
Germany look real appealing!!! What a vacation!!!

Did anyone hear about the gig Pink Floyd did in Venice, Italy last

79.44 | More on the movie... | COMPLX::WILLIAMS | Long as I keep growing my hair! | Fri Jul 21 1989 15:26 | 15 |
| The video is actually a movie Floyd did back in their Animals and Dark
Side days (when Roger was around - you remember REAL Pink Floyd?). It
was filmed in Pompei (SP?). Without a doubt an awesome flick. It
starts out with two of the members (I forget who because I saw it once
about seven years ago) carrying an enourmous gong out into the middle
of some ancient arena (like where they used to fight lions, etc).
Throughout the movie they toured the area and interviewed the 'gang'.
But they were heavily into the scenic viewing and really put it to use.
I would never have believed they would ever do a concert in such an
area but they did. Maybe (or should I say 'hopefully') Floyd is now
trying to get back to their roots and redo such things only in a
different area and with more up-to-date equipment. If you ever have
the chance to see the movie DON'T HESITATE TO GO!!!

Oh yeah I've seen this Live in Pompei. But see, the story is that Pink
Floyd ask for a concert in the pompei ruins, and they got the answer Yes but
with NO audience at all. This is what makes this live tape funny. They just
play for the ruins. It's a good video. But I doubted they damage the ruins
like they damage Venice.
BTW : The french TV played 2 days ago "Pink Floyd live in Venice". I
didn't find it that good. It's a bit melo. I noticed that when Gilmour sings
a song, the guitar parts are backed up by a guy behind him. It look like he
does not like to do both singing and guitar. They had a second drummer/percusion
jumping all the time and kind of ridiculous that was covering almost all the
normal drumming, bizare.

| Ya, that's the NEW (puke!) Floyd. Since Waters left they've added a
lot of younger players. I imagine that's so someone will still be able
to carry on after Gilmour, Mason, and Wright make a few million more
and retire. Gilmour never was much of a singer so he needs people to
back up his guitar work. Mason still is a great drummer, and Wright is
still the great key-man but they're all slowing down quite a bit.
Oh, and now that you mention it, I do remember no audience in that
movie. Strange. It was still pretty good.

After the Wall came...
The Final Cut
Pros & Cons Of Hitchhiking - Roger Waters
Radio Chaos - Roger Waters
??????? - 1st album by "David Gilmour Band"
Delicate Sound Of Thunder - "David Gilmour Band"
Also, there are a lot of albums that are imports and bootlegs. I don't
have a list of them all but some are:
Crackers
Ivor Wyne
WallLive
Roger
Wall Soundtrack (different than album)
Chaos Live
and before they called themselves Floyd they released albums under
the names The Intellectual Architects, and Meggadeths.
Also, there are a few more i cannot remember the names of. I'll
have to look them up, and a Roger Waters album called Music From
The Body that is really strange.

| Re. FLip
I watched (and recorded) the show from Holland television (stereo). It
was very impressing. One of the best shows I ever seen.
It was not Pink Floyd but only Roger Waters and invited guests who all
played "The Wall". Scorpions (opening and ending), Sinead O'Connors,
Van Morrison, Thomas Dolby, Cindy Laupers and others were among the
invited guests. There were also classic orchestras and chorus from
Berlin (german and red army's). All was very well directed and sounding
excellent. Roger Water's band, "The Bleeding Heart Band" was also very
fine. He and his band sound like good old Pink Floyd.
Very good guitar playing and general orchestration.
If anyone has the occasion to see this show don't miss it ! Scorpions
were fitting very well musically proving that "The Wall" is quite close
to metal and is in any case heavy (and progressive).

Well..... I listened to most of it, not all of it and was not
impressed in the least bit with Roger Waters version of The Wall.
For so long I've heard people say that Waters was the real force
behind Pink Floyd, well I know from what I heard I don't think
so! He may have co-written alot of material with Gilmore but I
think Gilmore puts the real feeling and gives Pink Floyd their
unique sound.
I think this will stand as testimony to really how much he is
and was a part of PF, not much. I have tired of hearing his whin-
nig and bad mouthing of his past band members. I was not impressed
at all with his version of The Wall. PF is just fine with Gilmore,
Mason and Wright. I hope the visuals were better than the music,
it might be the only redeeming factor.

Re -1. I agree with every word. I too sat through the whole show
live in Holland and was not at all impressed with Herr Walters
rendition. The best part of the show for me was Scorpions opening
number, van Morrison and the big blow up teacher/hammer thingie.
The collapse of the wall near the end was totally predictable and
added nothing to the show except to give the musicians a rest.
The soviet band was a big let down, after all the hype beforehand.
I suppose the atmosphere there was quite good, but I will have to
wait for my friend to return before I can give you a report on
that.
By the way i missed 'Saucerful of Secrets' from the discology,
but I don't know where it comes in. Perhaps someone can now
collate the several entries on this subject and produce a complete
PF/Barret/Gilmour & Co/Walters discology.

Waters did a lot more than co-write! He conceived, wrote and produced the
entire Wall album! Gilmour co-wrote three songs on there, and that's it
("Comfortably Numb", "Run Like Hell" and one more - maybe "Hey You"?). Now, I
also prefer the new PF to Waters solo, but give Roger credit where its due -
he was very much the visionary behind The Wall.
As to the concert, it started off pretty chaky, but sounded pretty good to me
after Side 2 began (starting with Bryan Adams singing "Young Lust"). Didn't
get to see it, as it wasn't on TV in the states. Can you give a listing of
who sang what songs??? All I could tell for sure were:
Scorpions - opening
Cindi Lauper - Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2
Joni Mitchell - Godobye Blue Sky
Bryan Adams - Young Lust
Van Morrison - Comfortably Numb
Who else sang what? thanx...

| Without the music, most of the time, the lyrics are just poetry,
especially in Water's depressing idea of life. But with the music, this
can add to the lyrics, and emphasize the ideas more. Take a look at Rog's
solo stuff, Pro's and Con's is mega especially because of the strange
idealism behind the album (the dreams we all have) but also because of
the fantastic array of musicians (eg. Eric Clapton, Raphael
Ravenscroft - sax). KAOS was a lesser album, I don't descredit that the
lyrics are good (fantastic), but the music is not that good. (even
though there are a few good songs - Home, the powers that be).
Waters writes good lyrics, but he need the music to complement his
lyrics, and Gilmore's music is the best without a doubt, unless Rog
finds a band as good as Gilmore, he cannot hope to regain the success
of his earlier days.

Read what I wrote a couple replies ago - Gilmour did NOT write the lyrics OR
the music - he only co-wrote three songs, and everything else was Waters
(lyrics and music!).
Now, I don't intend to discount Gilmours influence in the music - but just give
Roger some credit - it wasn't like Gilmour was his saviour or anything
BTW - the three songs on The Wall that Gilmour co-wrote were "Young Lust",
"Comortably Numb" and "Run Like Hell". Everything else was totally written
by Waters.
On 'The Final Cut', Waters wrote all the music and words, all solo.
On 'Wish You Were Here', Waters wrote or co-wrote all the songs, and Gilmour
co-wrote "Wish You Were Here" and parts of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".

Well, agreed that Roger had more influence on 'The Wall', but note the other
albums I listed were also mostly Roger. And keep in mind that is their entire
catalog (pre-breakup) since 1971, so that's the majority of their career.
> Also, considering Floyds recent material, compared to Rogers, then
> (personally) I prefer Gilmore's stuff.
I totally agree! I love the post-breakup Floyd, but don't even own the solo
Waters albums - they s*ck! But that doesn't downplay Waters greatness when he
was in Floyd....
re: .71
> Most anyone will tell you the most popular and remembered songs
> on The Wall ARE Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell.
Partially true - these are the most popular, along with "Another Brick In The
Wall, Part 2" and "Hey You". But for the most part, 'The Wall' is meant to be
taken as a whole, not just a collection of songs, so it doesn't really matter
to me what was most popular with radio. I don't think I ever put on just one
song from that album - I have to listen to the whole thing, with all the segues
and everything - its much more complete that way to me!

| Yeah, Waters was great, with pre-break-up Floyd, Most of my favourite
albums are of that era (even though there is not a lot else !!).
But, working with Floyd, Waters had a supreme greatness which he cannot
quite regain in his solo material, which is a pity, as the pro's and
con's is a glimpse at his post-Floyd genius, which was sadly lacking in
KAOS.

This has to be one of the best all-around, most professionally done
concert tape I've ever seen. Gilmour is one of my favorite "slow
burners".
The guitar players were armed to the teeth in Mesa/Boogie amps and
preamps. Gilmour played a Fender Strat for all songs but 2. He (and
the other guy) used Takamine acoustics on "Wish You Were Here" and he
also switched to a Tele for "Run Like Hell".
What other concert videos out there have the quality of this one? Some
are sort of boring and couldn't be watched very many times (Bon Jovi's

Depends on who you are. However, there was a patch of smog developing
in the arena so I should imagine that by the end of it, most people
were....directly or indirectly.
Perhaps I didn't word it correctly, it should have read, imagine if
you were one of the people who were uti and a bloody great big pig
emerged from the wall and started flapping its tongue in your
direction! I think a slight paranoia attack would have crept in.

The first time since '68 Astronomy Domine is released live. ( at least
through normal means and it even sounds like the original.)
The entire 'Dark side...' kicks although the Division Bell songs live
aren't really that good.
Anyone wanna speculate if another album of original material will be
released? I think maybe one more.

| I got it at midnight on the US release date. I think it sounds
infinitely better than 'Delicate Sounds of Thunder'. The packaging
is fantastic. I've seen some clips from the video, and it looks
excellent! I believe it was shot at the Earls Court shows, so it
looks a bit different than it did at Foxboro.
>The entire 'Dark side...' kicks although the Division Bell songs live
>aren't really that good.
You don't think that the live version of 'High Hopes' is good? I
prefer it to the original! I am a bit disappointed that they
couldn't fit everything on the CD's, though. The cassette version
includes 'One of These Days', and the LP version contains 'Marooned',
probably the best song on 'Division Bell', IMHO.
>Anyone wanna speculate if another album of original material will be

I think they'll probably release another one. Richard Wright is
supposed to be releasing another solo album also.

| 'Delecate Sounds of Thunder' was not very good IMO. 'High Hopes' is
done well, but I'm refering to 'What Do You Want From Me' more than the
rest. I'm a BIG Gilmour fan but I don't think his voice is all that
good live ( at least recorded live ).
I own Gilmour's two solo jobs ( I think there are only two ) but never
heard Wright's solo work old or new. Is it worth picking up?
Aside from 'Dark Side...' and 'The Wall' I have every Floyd that has
been released. I even own three bootleg live shows ( one is 'Dark
Side...' circa 1972.) and in that Gilmour's voice sounds a lot better.
Maybe I'm too critical...

one of the DSOTM songs. That was one of the high points of the show.

| Wright's 'Wet Dream' is a good album. It's kinda mellow for some
people, but it shows you how important he was for the Pink Floyd
sound. Snowy White and Mel Collins play guitar and sax on this
album.
Re: Tim
They couldn't drop one the DSOTM songs, considering they released
Pulse _because_ they had played the entire DSOTM in concert. They
should have dropped one of the others, though. 'One of these Days'
was one of the best songs performed!

How on earth can you own all Floyd albums, but not have DSOTM or The Wall!?!?!
Even non-Floyd fans have these in their collections!

| Tim in note.127 said it best. DSOTM is overplayed. So is The Wall.
THAT is why I do not own them....yet. besides, they're on cassette.
'Wet Dream' is an old album is it not? Mellow does't mean anything,
'Meddle' was quite relaxing..except 'One of These Days'....
I missed one that I don't own..' Obsured by Clouds' is not in my
collection....yet.

| 'Wet Dream' is _very_ mellow, but if you have most of the PF stuff, you
will most probably like it. Do you have the soundtracks to 'More' and
'Zabriskie Point'? How are they? These, along with 'Ummagumma' and
'Piper at the Gates of Dawn' are the only PF that I haven't bought
yet.

| I never heard of 'Zabriskie Point'. I guess I'm not a total Floyd
fan...
'More' is differant. I played 'The Nile Song' (track 2) for a buddy of
mine and he would not beleive it was Floyd.
Don't waste your money on 'Ummagumma' unless you find it in the bargin
bin. The live stuff is good but the studio stuff is weird, very weird.
On cassette, only 'Astronomy Domine' is included and their tune
'Several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and
grooving with a Pict' is entertaining but not normal.
'Pipers...' is the only true Sid Barrett work. Waters pretty much took
over after Sid's mind went away. I recommend 'Pipers...' it is very
good. Lots of strange songs but good none the less.
I take it 'Wet Dream' is similar to 'Meddle'.
'More' is OK but it goes from good rockin' songs like track 2 and 9 to
mellow like track 1 and weird like tracks 3 and 5. I recommed it.

Some of y'all may find this interesting.
I was reading an old copy of 'Musician'(sp) magazine a friend of mine
has and it had part 1 (of 3 parts) The Pink Floyd story-The early
years. According to the article, Waters, Mason, Wright and Gilmour were
on their way to Syd's place to pick him up and do a show. Gilmour, at
this time, was not quite a full member. He was playing guitar back
stage cuz Syd was wasted most of the time and couldn't play proper.
Well, it seems one of them said "I guess we gotta pick up Syd now." One
of the others said "Oh, lets not." and never did.
That was in early '68 during the recording of 'Saucer Full of Secrets'.
Now Syd is a vegitable in the care of his mum.
Now, that is according to that acticle and may not be acurrate.
I thought you might find that interesting.

So here I am, walking through CD Warehouse looking for Kiss unplugged
and ventured over to the Pink Floyd section and what do I find, Relics

For those that like older Floyd, this was realeased in 71 with 11
tracks, some not found on any album's except for compilation albums, ie
Works, Collection of Great Dance Songs, etc... and in the box set.
Song list:
Arnold Layne - first single released in 67. not on any other album
in North America except compilation albums and in the box set.
Interstellar Overdrive - found on first album.
See Emily Play - same as Arnold Layne.
Remember a Day - found on second album.
Paintbox - same as Arnold Layne
Careful With That Axe, Eugene - studio version. Live version on
Ummagumma.
Julia's Dream - same as Arnold Layne.
Cirrus Minor - found on the More album.
The Nile Song - found on the More album.
Biding My Time - same as Arnold Layne.
Bike - found on first album.
