I think all that's left for HM radio is 'Metal Shops' which
run during the w'end. WBCN, WAAF, and WHJY either used to
or still do run these 'Shops' for a couple hours either Fri-
day night or Saturday night.
There was the 'Metal Shop', the 'Metal Zone', and one other.

There's a college station on 88.9 in Lowell, I think. It's
Emerson College's radio. Anyway, on sunday nights at 11, they
had, umm.... I think it was called Heavy Metal from Hell or
something. It was a raw, serious, HEAVY/speed metal show. I heard
a lot of bands like Motorhead, and Metallica, and also a lot of
obscure, vicious metal bands, it's a great show put together by
some serious metal heads. Anyone ever hear this program?

Do you in the good 'ole U.S. of A. know about the radio situation
in Britain?? It's rotten!
There are four national radio stations; 1 - mainstream mostly
top40 stuff, 2 - middle of the road, 3 & 4 - classical and shit!
Then there are nationally owned local radio stations which are
a mixture of the above four mostly the latter half.
Finally independant local radio, various stations up and down
the country mostly catering to the top40 stuff but also
classical/country/soul/etc. But even on these stations there is
a lack of good ROCK shows. There are one or two good ones, but
in the main crap. National radio 1 probably has the best rock show
of all, but it's only two hours long, 10-12 on a friday night (let's
face it, who's in on a friday night).
It's not a good situation, I hope it changes soon,
Keep rockin',
Darron.
P.S. the best stations DO NOT play Xxx Xxxxxx tracks.

| That's why tape decks were invented, I'm convinced. Deep in heart
of Dixie we got C & W out the ying yang and 2 top 40 stations.
Once in a great while if the cloud cover is right, we can pick up
a couple stations out of NC, 107.9 and 99.9 that on rare occasion
play a metal tune or 2 but that's it. So between this and the junk
MTV airs, I'm counting on you guys to keep me posted on what's

HM station that was outta NCSU. Not a lotta power, so you couldn't

It was down around 87-88 on the dial. Don't remember exactly.
There was also a punk and a classical station right in the same

Nasty Habits is John Marino's show. Emerson
College is in Boston, not Lowell, and he plays a
great deal more than death metal. You can almost
always catch some Racer-X along with a lot of
local music with some MacAlpine thrown in here in
there, etc.
101.1 (WGIR Manchester) also has a metal show now
which is done by Mike Jones who used to do the
metal show at WERS before he took a job at 101.
WAAF has a metal show, I don't know if WBCN does
anymore and Lowell's station WJ?? I think has
another metal show that's on twice a week similar
to Nasty Habits.
On my way to Florida this year, I drove through
New York. They had a 24 hour a day metal station
there!!!! I couldn't believe it. Why can't they
have something like that around here . . .

in the area. I like them because they play a large variety of music.
They play anything from some light rock, hard rock to Heavy head banging
music. They have good show called ROCK LINE which is on Monday night, that
features everyone around. This show is heard across the US and Canada.
On Friday or Saturday night, they have "The Metal Shop". This has
a count down of all the HM requests for the week!
If you pull into the Worcester county area, put the digital read-out
on 107.3, WAAF. They have the best morning show, best noon time work
force, bar and grill, Metal shops, Bay state rock and the Sunday Electric
Brunch!!!!

| "California is the place you oughta be,
so they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly"
the Ballad of the Beverly Hillbillies
I recently returned from a week in LALA land where I found
the radio station we all have been looking for (this reply also
addresses note 191). KNAC, Pure Rock 105.5, downtown Los Angeles.
What a difference from the drudgery we hear in New England. No
repeat songs during the course of the day, no Top 40, no "same old
classics", nothing but heavy metal variety. During the one week
period I was there I heard metal that I had never heard on the radio.
90% of the music were songs that were several cuts deep on an album
(ie., not the usual overplayed single syndrome). Hey Cookster!
Imagine a Boston area station playing Maiden's Number of the Beast
at 1:20 on a Wednesday afternoon! Followed it up with UFO, Anthrax,
Metallica, Guns n' Roses (Nite Train, not Sweet Child which is getting
overplayed), Van Halen (I'm the One) and so many others that I can't
remember right now. My rent-a-car stereo never left this station
(after I finally got my girlfriend to quit tuning to LA's sister
station to Boston's KISS). Why can't someone start a similar format
in New England? Too many stations have the same format as it is.
I'm seriously considering on moving to LA just so I can hear a
radio station that is not stale. Maybe they get boring over a period
of more than a week but judging by the variety they played I'm sure
they keep the playlist non-repetitive and noncommercial oriented.
I seem to be rambling but I was very pleased with what this
station offered and am VERY dissappointed with the radio I hear
in the New England area. (Thank god for tape decks!!) If you're
lucky enough to get to LA tune in to 105.5. You won't be disappointed.

I met some of the DJ's from 'AAF a few years back, and me bein'

I thought it was pretty wild!! Drew and Zip seemed
(Zip more, IMO) to notice that the people who liked
it were the people who were into "harder rock"...
I wouldn't be able to listen to it on my alarm radio

left to right speakers, but in my car it was great!!
I didn't wanna hear the Clash, so I tuned it out and
went to the other speaker that was playing whatever

| That sounds great! I haven't heard of anything that original in
years. I wish stations around here (Toronto) would try something
(or anything) that might bring a laugh to the mornings.
This reminds me of WRIF (Detroit) back a few years ago. A couple
of stations were having a `war' over who plays more music, and WRIF
was playing 6 in a row or you could win $1000. Well, the DJ played
a commercial for `Marajana Helper' (sp?) and the co-host (Dick the
Bruiser) went nuts thinking it was a real commercial.

| Got a listen to a Canadian radio station last Thursday (Not sure what
the call letters are, but it's 90.3 FM.) Talk about some SERIOUS
METAL being played ! WHOA ! It's a multi-style station, with
different types of music aired each day. METAL from 20:00-00:00 on
(I believe) Thursday and Saturday nights. Definately made my day to
hear ANOTHER radio station playing `Hard Core METAL' to `Thrash
METAL'. (Especially in the wilds of Vermont ! :^)) Ya' ever get up
towards Montreal, give it a listen. . .if you go on those days. :^)
In the mean time, I'll try to get a better schedule down for what's
played on what days.

but where the hell is it going? with such an over whelming amount

hard to find a killer metal station. So metalheads suck up all

JUPITR::WCLUETT 24 lines 13-SEP-1989 08:49
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the management changes at local ( Worcester/Boston ) radio
station WAAF, I was wondering what other people think of the
new UNTAMED radio station. I will startwith my goog and bad points.
Good points--
They seem to be playing more and more "metal" bands songs, moreso
than they ever did. And they blend them together.
eg. Great White > Warrent > dangerous toys > WASP > Skidrow etc.
Bad points--
o Don't like the unprofessionalism the djs possess.
o Too much enphasis on UNTAMED radio station
o No more top 5 at 5
o too many commercials now.
o no variety
o no morning/afternoon/ or evening show
Result-
Stick with WHJY out of Provy.

I'm one of those people who just keeps pushing the buttons
until I find a song I like. Every now and then I listen
to WAAF.
I used to listen every night on my way home for the top 5

to the DJ's to place an opinion.
But the NEW UNTAMED RADIO bit is overdone....they don't have
to announce it after every song....

| Maybe this would be best in the radio note, but I didn't want it there.
Anyway, what are people's opinions (from Mass, South NH) about the new
format at WAAF? IMO, I don't like it. It sounds too controlled.
Almost like a computer is running it. 2 songs, commercial, break,
2 songs, etc... And what's the deal with "untamed radio". I thought it
was kind of cool when they first said it, but every other 2 words out
of their mouths is untamed radio. It's boring, repetitive and lame.
Untamed weather, untamed traffic, untamed commercials. Untamed
boredom. PLEASE!!
I think that they are leaning towards harder rock now, as well.
What do you think?

Yeah, well, back in my idealistic youth, I always thought that
radio would be a great way to *learn* what your favorite songs
could be. You know, go 3, 4 cuts deep into an album and get a feel
for whether you want to go buy it. Silly me, I forgot it's a 1-cut
deep, 40-song rotation world. And the problem is that it's true
no matter where you go. 'FNX, 'AAF, 'BCN ... they all play a different
40 songs, but they all still have a 40-song rotation it seems.
WBRU is about the only respectable station around here.
The "Top 5 at 5" was great, and now it's gone ...

butchaka, I don't remember them. My WAAF days ended when I moved out

All this talk about Karen Grace has made me ill....she's got

b*tche of all time. She made a wicked error on the air and when
I called her to explain that she was totally wrong she got all egoed
out...I'm never wrong type of stuff. The deal was...the day after
that wonderful Geraldo show about HM and Satan....she was playing
the intro to number of the Beast..by Iron Maiden...and as we all
know ...(or should)..the intro to that comes from the book of
Revelations.. she went on and on about how "Satanic" it was and
what garbage it was. So I called and told her that if she had done
a little reading on the back of the album she would have seen the
chapter and verses it was taken from...and she wouldnt sound so
ignorant...I dont think she liked my constructive criticism...

WMBR 88.1 (MIT's station) has at least two thrash shows. Their

to be on Tuesdays from 8pm-10pm. It's now on Mondays from 4pm-6pm,
just in time for the commute home. It might be moved again, but
this time to Wednesdays from 12pm-2am.
"Sick Packages" used to be on Wednesdays from 8pm-10pm. That has been

Well... at first I completely despised WAAF's new
'AAAAHHHH UNTAAAAYYYMED RADIO!!' format... but since
they've tamed the throat-cramming of that slogan, I've noticed
that they play MUCH HARDER stuff than they ever did. Kind of
reminds me of how WCOZ used to be. Keep in mind that I don't
usually listen to the station (usually tapes) but when I do
lately, I like what I hear.
Of course the stupid sayings they have now, and the
moronic billboard (which is quite nice, but slightly sexist and cheap)
are still there...
but the music is much better!
They even play the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Higher Ground" daily!

In my 15 and 3/4 years of life I have comr across these stations
or shows which are fairly cool:
Obviously WAAF is the best all around.107.3 Worcester
In Lowell there is a radio station called WJUL that has a rippin'
metal show called Metallic Mayhem on Thursday nights 6-10pm.
That's 91.5
WBCN has a semi-weak metal show "Heavy Meatal From Hell" formerly
Raw Power and sometimes they got cool stuff. That's Saturday nights
12-2am. 104.1 Boston.
WUNH has an awesome metal show Monday nights 11-2am. With a metal
LP-complete at 10pm. That's 91.3 Durham, NH.
There's WHEB in Portsmouth, NH that has a weak metal show Friday
nights 12-1am called the Metal Zone. That's 100.3fm
Oh, yeah the WUNH show is called the Metalstorm.
Way up in Portland, Maine there's a cool station called WBLM
that plays some cool rock stuff but doesn't have a metal show
that I know of. That's 102.9
In Tulsa, Oklahoma there's the awesomest station: KMOD 97.5
They play the coolest stuff, at lest for a regular station and
as far as I know has a metal show Thursday nights 11pm-12am
called Metal Shot.
There are plenty of other cool stations like WHJY and "the Hits"
97.7 in St. Catharines, Ontario, but that's my extent of knowledge
Except WNEW in New York and Knac in LA.
Auditory Imagery rules (and Soundgarden is cool, too.)

pretty good station. It used to be up around 106 or 107. However, last fall
they changed their frequency, and they are now located at 102.9.
They also increased their power to 100,000 watts, making them the most
powerful FM station on the east coast! You can hear them all the way down to

| Last Saturday, my daughter was babysitting a 4 year old at our house.
They were sitting on the parlor floor coloring while listening to WAAF.
The DJ was talking, then he says" Hello, Hello, can anyone hear me? If
you can hear me, put your finger in your nose." 5 seconds later, the 4 year old
looks at my daughter and says "Well, put your finger in your nose." My
daughter says "No, I'm not going to put my finger in my nose." The 4 year
old says "But he said to."
This was so funny I couldn't stop laughing. She was so serious and
thought that my daughter should have done it.

BUT, I've learned to LOVE SOUTHERN ROCK - Skinnard (sp), Allmand Bros,

I have a question for all of you...
What is AAF trying to prove by playing that song "Rush" by
(something like) Big Audio Dynimite. AAF has been playing
it for months now, and it has to be the *WORST* song I
have ever heard. Why I bring it up is because they are
playing it on the radio now. Next time I hear that song
I am going to throw my radio (which isn't that great) on
the ground and stomp on it for an hour or two.. I
*COULD NOT* hate that song anymore than I do. I called
Hillman one day and told him *exactly* what I thought of the
song. All he had to say is 'I like it.'. AAF wake up
the song $ucks they is so much other stuff you could be playing.
Oh...great... "Rush" is over and now they are playing that
song which is almost as stupid "I'll stop the world....."
Save me...please!!!! I wish I could get HJY from here.
Are there no better radio stations then AAF?
BTW a few back.....The Extreme against AAF softball game
was pretty good. My friend is *sorta* related to Nuno
so I got to be on the field on the Extreme so called "bench".
Just a bunch of people, related to the players, standing in
foul ground.
In closing AAF get a life.. There are so many good groups you
could be playing.

Gee...Duh....I never thought of that... Boy are you smart... 8)
Yes a realize that there are other people besides me, but I
have not met one person besides Hillman that likes that song.
(At the time I called the Hillman there were a bunch of us
in the room and on the phone talking to him).
My point being (since I believe you missed it) is that I use
to like AAF, but now I realize that they *$uck* I am basically
saying what Chris did. If there was a good heavy metal station
around they would make a killing. AAF claims to be untammed
radio and yet they play the songs I mentioned, plus once in a
while they play Fine Young Canibals, Meatloaf, and such...
Those two songs from last night kinda pushed me over the
edge, but it comes from a much bigger, growing, hate for the
station.
>I don't recall which facility you work at, but have you
>tried 104.1 BCN or 101.1 GIR??
I work in SHR and I can not get GIR (which I do listen to outside

station around, now that I don't like AAF as much is HJY,
but I can't get it at work.

.327> If someone actually started a real Heavy Metal station, I'd bet

Whatever "real" is...I think no matter what style of music it is
if your goal was to attract a smaller audience that doesn't like
intermixed crap within what they consider to be good then the odds
are that you wouldn't attract as many advertisers.
There's probably a greater chance of an all 'real Heavy Metal'
non-commercial station but even that's unlikely, some that come
to mind that have specific radio shows have the broadest radio
programs which is nearly unheard of in the metal/classic/cutting-edge
commercial domain.

I am sorry if I was not clear in my first message... My
intent was to say that AAF in my opinion has gone down
hill. They play pop rock rather the 'untamed' metal.
I was just using the song "Rush" and the others as an
example, sorry if I was not clear. I *do* still listen
to AAF at work because there is nothing better that I can
find, and the tape player "eats" tapes. I mean AAF
does play some songs I like, but most I really don't.
I am glad you were not coming down on me, because they
are only my opinions, but I happen to think that my

rental car I had didn't have a tape player. I didn't personally like
AAF very much. It was very repetative, had way too many commercials,
stupid DJ's, and played a lot of lame music. It reminded me of our
local AOR station here in Colo. Springs, KILO.
I ended up listening to 'FNX most of the time, but bounced around
between that AAF, BCN, and a couple of others I don't remember. I
heard Z-rock on some FM station when I was down in Rhode Island, but
couldn't get it as I got up toward central Mass.

| You guys should have grown up in the 70's if you wanted bad radio. Warrant and
Poison can't hold a candle to Captain & Tenille, Village People, the Commodores
and half of the other disco "hits". Worse yet I came from Vermont so I had to
listen to a station 90 miles away (Montreal) to hear real music. Didn't come in
at all in any car I was ever in.
Then I see commercials to "re-live" those "fantastic" songs. AaahhHH!
I think that radio is pretty repetitive but with the selection in this (Boston/
Worcester) area you really can't complain.
Did you ever think that you would hear Metallica or Queensrych on the radio?
Can you believe that Metallica and Guns N Roses have 3 of the top 5 albums in
the country?
I hate some stuff on the radio today, but overall the music has gotten better
and heavier. The commercials and DJs are a tossup I guess...

He first went to work at Metal Blade Records. He left there, and was at WGIR

The reference in .205 to Lisa's "Sick Packages" show is still
accurate but her show now runs from from 8:30 to 10:30 on Friday

exceeds anything they generally play.
Yes, that pirate radio show is okay at times.
It's pretty sad if someone has to depend on MTV to hear new metal or

| Just looking in on this notesfile for the first time, and a number of
comments.
1. Too bad about CGY. I thougt they offered one of the best
varieties on the air. Just before they cut over to EGL
they were really smoking. I think they were playing
everything on their shelves.
I hate to see a seventies station make it. Gag! all the
Three Dog Night, Bee Gees and Captain and Tenille you can
"stomach" (puke) for me about 3 chords worth. If we're lucky
it'll die a slow painful death.
2. I like the college stations. Fitchburg has a good one.
Lowell sometimes, and I found a great one up in Plymouth,
NH while I was driving thru the mts.
3. NYC has one that's way ahead of ours, where Mark Raz, formerly
of AAF is working now.
4. Last I heard Ian O'Malley, he was working a NJ station, but
that was a coupla years ago. So, I don't know. I really
liked Ian and Chuck Nolan. I thought they had very dry
sense of humor, and a little class. Something, unfortunately,
missing from some of the new d.j.s.
5. On AAF I DO like Greg Hill. He's dry and very quick on his
feet. He's great with double entendre.
6. I'm afraid I think Liz Wild is a pig, and she looks the
part. Don't be fooled, guys, she is NOT the fox she makes
herself out to be, and is always saying she is, unless you like
the overweight variety with red lips that enter a room before
she does. The voice definitely does NOT match the body.
She had some funny stuff for awhile, the dolls, and man on
a stick, and stuff, but no longer. I'm just not into being
degraded (since I AM a woman), or having my senses assaulted.
Shock doesn't impress me.
7. John Osterlind's voice doesn't match either. He's a lot
younger, and (girls) cuter than you expect him to be
8. A dream radio station for me of the local disc jockeys would
be Greg Hill, John Osterlind, Mark Parento (another dry, witty,
and has class), and Chuck Nolan.
9. I liked the Pirate Radio. Too bad it went off. It would have
been nice if one of our stations around here had picked it up.
Ok, so it had it's good days and it's bad days.
10. There's some show on TV Friday or Saturday late night, can't
remember the station either, that introduces a lot of new
stuff not heard before (and maybe never) on MTV.
11. I never watch MTV anymore. Is it still overrun with Rap?
Rickki Rachtman's show wasn't great but it wasn't too bad.
Is it still on?
12. FNX used to be better, I thought. Now they play the new stuff
first, but unfortunately, a lot of it is garbage.
13. Anybody out there into the quirky stuff? I have a tendency to
like things like Oingo Boingo's Deadman's Party, and Warren
Zevon's Excitable Boy, and Kim Mitchell's Go For A soda, Tubes
What Do You Want From Life. Guess I tend to like things that
are very tongue in cheek, and poke big fun at society, or the
socially aware stuff from the likes of Tool, Queensryche.....

I know which station you're talking about but forget their call
letters. Indeed, it roolz!!
> 5. On AAF I DO like Greg Hill. He's dry and very quick on his

but he comes off with a 10th grade humour and mind set. His show is
DEFNITELY geared towards the high school male market, age 13 - 17!!

Agreed. I had the "pleasure" of sitting next to her at Applebee's in
Marlboro a week or so ago... AACK! Ever feel like turning around to
someone you've never met and say "I hate your $#!$#$ guts!!"??
She tries to me the next Howard Stern and fails miserably. Nuff said.
> 8. A dream radio station for me of the local disc jockeys would

John Osterlind?? I think he's an idiot as well. He's always screwing
up the names of songs, and he's improvs are terrible!!
My dream station, for the most part, is BCN. Their morning show with
Charles is just ok -- I'd switch Charles to nights and have Howard
Stern on in the am.
> 9. I liked the Pirate Radio. Too bad it went off. It would have

Always came off like a Z_ROCK wanna be though.

Yes.

True, they've gone mainstream imho. I liked when their programming was
ultra cutting edge. Now its like the Cure and Nivrana...aack!

what's even funnier is people like that think it's adult humor!
|
68.426 | You're entitled | CINBAD::DOCUMENTS | | Wed Oct 19 1994 08:40 | 38 |
| That's funny that's more the way I think of Liz Wild's so-called humor.
I guess that's what some people call "adult humor" if your idea of
adult is sexist, gutter humor. And I don't know too many people as
quick on their feet and good as improvising as Greg. And I can assure
you, I'm far from the high school or male crowd.
I think Liz's "humor" is geared more towards that age group, and sex,
non-readers, non-thinkers.
How do you feel about the Marx Brother's or Robin Williams, Emo
Phillips, Steven Wright? (Ah yes, now that I look a little more
closely, I can see Andrew Dice Clay written all over your note. Now
there's "adult"). Guess you're not too crazy about Home Improvement
or Grace Under Fire. Guess I just like that off-the-cuff, quick
on your feet, doesn't make me nauseous type of humor. But then I'm
kind of a strange bird. I also prefer being in a room full of nice
people to a room full of people who are full of it, and I never saw
the fun in puking at parties or waking up not remembering what you did
last night (How do you know you had a good time? and puking is not one
of my favorite things in the whole wide world to do).
Oh, wanted to add, I don't think of AAF as a really heavy metal radio
station, (But they're the best we have around here, now. Used to
listen to BCN, but stopped when on my 45 min. drive into work I didn't
hear ONE song.) WAAF has definitely gotten better. I remember when
everytime I tuned to their station they were playing one of the same
three songs, and I could actually time what time a particular song was
going to be played. I still think they could play a little more
variety, and dig deeper into the records, and once in awhile into the
past. I personally think Jethro Tull was WAY ahead of their time.
They almost sound like grundge.
And are we all glad we don't have as many clone bands around, nowadays.
Thanks for the chance to bounce my opinions off you.

Sorry, but I disagree. The few times I surf by that station, they're

couple of the latest HM hits.
They're without a doubt a HM station imho

You really think John's an idiot? See, I don't recall his
improvisations, but I respect a lot of his opinions, and I think he
offers a pleasant alternative to shock jocks. I also like the way
he digs into the backgrounds of song lyrics, and groups. He seems
to do his homework.
And I agree, the NYC station roolz.

>You really think John's an idiot?
Yeah -- based on the few times I've listened to the "O Zone" -- he
starts blabbing about a song or a group, gets himself in too deep
where he really has NO idea WTF he's talking about, blabbers a bit
more, and then makes some excuse to play another song...

i definately dont consider WAAF a metal station either, not in the way
I think of a metal station. They play the latest grunge hits, some
cool old heavy stuff, but if you go check out KNAC or what used to be
Pirate Radio, at any time you could find them playing old Slayer,
Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Dio as well as new Pantera (NOT that boring
Sabbath tune), Testament, etc. I would kill for a station like that.
WAAF definately has gotten better, but it's not where I'd like it to be
yet.

a narrow-minded, bigoted sexist, who then goes around trying to snow us

as I'm concerned he represents everything that's wrong with this
country right now with criminals who abuse the legal system to have
more rights than victims, people who abuse the Welfare system and ruin
it for people who really have need. He abuses the right of free
speech. I can't wait for his 15 minutes of fame to be over with so he
can crawl back into the hole he crawled out of. I once heard him have

I was gonna nit pick, but I'll just summarize, "abusing the right of

While I don't think Howard Stern is a "guardian" of free speech, I
think of him as a "test case". And given all the "I'm for free speech
but not in this case..." reactions he's getting, I'd say we're failing
the test and thus, the test was worthwhile.

And I was worried I might be too controversial ;-)
I'm a large believer in free speech, and I agree Stern has a right to
say whatever he wants on whatever front he wants (no matter how
moronic, bigotted, etc. And I still wish he'd go away.) And I already
stated what my CHOICE was (turn him off, and take BCNs button away).
Of course, you realize that also means the KKK have a right, the white
supremicists hava right, and on down the line. And if gays hava right
to march in the St. Patty's day parade then so do white supremicists.
Or do you draw the line? And if you do draw the line, who's the god
that decides. When does it go beyond freedom of speech to slander,
antisemiticism, racism, and intolerance? When does it start
infringeing on the rights of others? I sometimes find that it's
ok to be INTOLERANT of groups it's not the vogue or fashion to be
TOLERANT of.
I also believe it is an individual's right to smoke, but not if I
have to inhale it. (I guess I COULD do a Bill Clinton, tho, and
just NOT inhale).
Nude Twister sounds alot more entertaining.

God did. It's called Agape love. There are 2 other basic types of

I remember an incident of my freedom of expression from my high school
days. The teacher was lecturing on the finer points of an Isoceles
triangle (which has nothing to do with kamasutra). I proceeded to walk
up to his desk, during the middle of class, and began tearing up all of
his notes into small pieces. Naturally he screamed, "WHAT ARE YOU
DOING MR. HEISER?! THOSE ARE MY NOTES!!!" I simply stated, "I'm
exercising my freedom of expression." I was then escorted down to
visit the Gestapo (Dean of Students), who was an ex-Drill Sargent in
the Marines. If any of you know how they treat students with
freedom-of-expression problems in private Catholic high schools, you'll
know that I quickly learned where freedom starts and ends.
Of course, I made *part* of this up, but I think it proves the point:
freedom isn't freedom if it infringes on someone else's freedom. It's
all a matter of good taste and etiquette; something today's society has
lost.

You asked a great question and then you answered it yourself:
It goes beyond freedom of speech when it infringes on the rights
of others.
I do not think Howard Stern is infringing on the rights of others.
Do you?
If so, we'd love to here what/whose rights he's infringing.
If not, then he is not "abusing" nor "pushing the limits" of free

I think you missed her point. Seems to me what she was alluding to
is that if you make racial slurs, make antisemetic gestures, etc...
there is a certain amount of retribution you will face.
On the other hand think about what women face and what kind of
retribution (if any) is applied.
we're a sexually oriented society and women are the most exploited
in all facets...think about it.
the only part of her question she answered was that she can turn the
dial from Howard Stern...that's only part of the problem.

You need to consider the context here.
She does NOT have to "put up with it" from Howard Stern.
Howard Stern also seems more than willing to "face" a certain amount of
retribution. Heck, I think he thrives on it.
Howard Stern is not infringing on anyone's rights, nor is he beyond any
"limit" of free speech.

There now seems to be some consensus that my statement "abuse of free
speech" is not quite the "oxymoron" it was called (and I believe the
law/courts uphold this with rulings on slander, etc.), since debate
now seems to have swung from whether or not there is such a thing as
abuse of free speech to whether or not Howard Stern abuses it.
Having the RIGHT to say something does not make it RIGHT to say it.
(Rose colored glasses firmly in place) wouldn't it be nice if
men and women, people of all races and religions all RESPECTED
one another, and treated one another with consideration?
And I think it is almost as sad that anyone would "thrive" on
insulting, debasing, and degrading others, as it is someone
who would thrive on the misery and misfortune of others.
That does not make me a feminist, or a bra burner. and It does
not mean I'm against levity (Every group has jokes about it, and
hopefully we are big enough people to be able to laugh at
ourselves).

Maybe. The woman I saw on Oprah who still loves her husband despite the
fact that he boinked her sister during their wedding reception strikes
me as being a lot more "unconditional".
What's the name of that horrible serial murderer they executed in FL
last year? His mother said she still loved him in spite of everything
he did. The people outside the prison cheering the news of his death
said that god was sending him "straight to hell."

>>> Controversy? <yawn> How droll...
And what a pompous, condescending, affectatious remark.
Well, I'd like to thank all but a few for the somewhat less than warm
welcome I've received in this conference. It's obvious you have your
own little clique, into which starngers are not welcome.
In case it has escaped your notice, it was not my intent to be
"controversial". I made a number of what I considered rather
innocuous remarks, and the very first reply I recieve is an insult
which suggests that I have a 10th grade mentality. Call me crazy but i
felt the need to defend myself. Then I'm accused of making
"oxymoronic" statements, and the next thing I know I'm embroiled in
discussions about "free- speech" and theology.
Well, I'm outa here. This notesfile is taking up worthwhile disk
space.

I don't believe this is true, certainly not for me. People are just a
little dry with their humor. You seemed like the type that'd accept
that and get on with things, I suppose not.

Sorry you didn't have what it takes to 'make it' in here...which is
really nothing more than a sense of humour. No one is serious in here,
but I guess it takes some time in the HM environment to get that.
Anyways, the only issue I ever had with any of your statements was when
you cited DJ John Ostrolin (sp?) of AAF's "O Zone" as being
'Intelligent'. I said it once and I'll say it again, the guy is a
complete idiot, and one I'd like to smack upside the head, given the
chance. If you choose to go, so be it, but I'm sorry you couldn't hang
around longer to chat.

man... a zillion unseen notes....
anyway, i would just like to say CHICAGO RADIO STATIONS SUCK!!!!!!
seriously... the main rock station out there had a 6 disk cd changer
or something. Alan and I were taking bets on which band would be on
the radio when we turned it out. We were only right 3 times or so, but
the times we were wrong it was one of the other bands (except on the
weekend they seemed to change format). They played STP, Smashing
Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, zeppelin/new page/plant or pearl jam.
that was pretty much it. I wore out my new 'ryche and dt tape to the
point where Alan actually LIKES the new DT album!!! :'). buck we went
to SFx (i forget) but they were SOLD OUT for some haloween special
(good thing i drove in thru the exit instead of paying for parking
:')). that sucked.

| I thought you all might like to know that I have officially replaced WBCN
in my car radio with WAAF. Previously I hadn't bothered with WAAF because
I thought it was too "teeny-bopper" for me. Maybe it still is, but ever
since WBCN changed format to "modern rock" I have even less of an interest
in it than I used to. Plus, after 7 pm I can still listen to some music
rather than Howard "waste-of-time" Stern.
I'm finding that WAAF isn't as bad as I would have guessed, certainly more
interesting than WBCN. At least I can hear a lot of Zeppelin and Floyd
now!
I'm sure most of you already listen to WAAF in a big way, but are there any
others who have made the change, or otherwise think WBCN is going downhill?
It looks like WFNX will overlap/compete with WBCN now, but WFNX probably
doesn't talk as much!

| I listen to both. Now BCN serves the purpose that MTV used to for me. They
play more things that haven't broken into the bigtime yet - ala MTV's buzz
clips. I find Opie and Anthony a bit too much impressed with themselves. The
music AAF plays is still more up my alley than BCN or ZLX even though I'm in my
late 30's (physically)...
AAF could rotate things a bit more but so could all stations.
I mean even ZLX is playing whole album sides now. I just heard one whole side
of Every Picture Tells a Story by Rod Stewart. How many times have you heard
Maggie May vs any other song on that album?
Tim
I heard something so funny the other night on HJY in Providence. Someone called
in because the DJ called convenience store workers some slur (I won't say unless
asked) and the guy was complaining.
So he asked for the complaint dept. The DJ goes, this is Heywood in the
Complaint dept... They go on and on finally the guy askes for the name of this
DJ.
Heywood Jablomy
The guys says the name, completely oblivious. The DJ says can you repeat it
back to me so I can make sure you got it right and the guy does...
I almost went off the road... The guy just didn't catch on.

WAAF is pretty unfunny in the morning, IMO, and when they're not
cracking stupid jokes they're playing the same songs over and
over. And the fact that WBCN even gives Howard Stern his own

I guess I haven't yet heard any morning babbling on WAAF. I can't imagine
any station being worse than WBCN in the morning. I think they play about
3 songs per hour on WBCN, the rest is talk and commercials and Charles
padding Mishegas with so much bulls**t talk I could fertilize my backyard!

Paully,
Save them tapes, cause they're collectors stuff now. KNAC 105.5 FM Long
Beach has been taken over (as in early 95) by "south of de border"
music. Imagine my surprise when driving back from the bay area, tuning
in what USED to be the best station in the nation, and having a totally
no comprende' experience! I heard from locals that KNAC was getting in
trouble with the FCC for certain language used (accidently, I'm sure)
and management sold them out. They still have KNAC night at a few
choice clubs in LA/Orange County area, where metal heads talk about
withdrawel symptoms, as there are no really "metal" stations left.

KSJO (someone mentioned in also) was decent. There is a cool jazz

VERY good stuff they played on it, mostly contemporary, but good.
Now, for my old all-time favorite out there!!!

the MC bit at a club in San Jose....back late 80's when I saw Robin
Trower there (2 yrs in a row too! He was EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and he
was pretty funny. He used to come on the radio saying he had Nancy
Reagan inflatable dolls with french and greek features, then go
"Naaanct, I love youuuuuuuuu". He was like BCN/AAF used to be back

Well, I'm going to go way out on a limb here, but...
WGAO, the Dean College radio station, is the best radio out there
right now... It's the only thing I can listen to for any amount
of straight time....
It's college radio (real college radio, not like 'FNX or 'BRU), so
they're on "whenever," with no schedule, but also with no format.
There is no playlist.
I'm sitting here listening and it's:
o Aerosmith "Same old story"
o Duran Duran "Union of the Snake"
o Metallica "Crown King"
o old Journey ballad
o Cracker "Teen Angst"
o some punk rocker I don't know
o some Cranberries tune
o ZZ Top
o some hip-hop dance tune I don't know
..... and so on. They just play anything. It doesn't have to flow
or fit a demographic or... nothing. Cool 70's schlock fits with
new alternative fits with heavy rock.
I wish there was more stations like that. I like lots of different
styles, and get bored with one type (even HM), and it's nice to see
this sort of free form abandon. Man, if commercial radio went to
this, I'd buy every product advertised.... :^)

| I hear ya Shawn. I cain't stand commercial radio for more than a little
stretch at a time. Here in Austin I'll often listen to KUT, The University
of Texas public radio station. In the morning it's National Public Radio,
since I'm too busy usually to read a paper, but in the evenings it's
pretty free-form, excellent jazz show one night, reggae another night,
world music, etc. some of it sucks, but I appreciate the variety.
Here's one for ya... why can't radio stations play DIFFERENT cuts off
an album besides the singles? They'll play a whole album when it's new,
and then play only "the singles". Why don't radio stations have shows during
which the DJ gets to play what he wants, like the college stations, like
the old FM stations? Are they concerned they'll lose some of their
"demographic"?
And, while I'm at it, what is the percentage of radio "personalities"
who aren't irritating morons?
Have a nice day. 8^)
