| Last time I checked (about a month ago):
Les Paul Standard (Rosewood fingerboard) running around $ 750.00
Les Paul Custom (Ebony) running around $ 850.00.
Used Les Pauls can be found between $300 and $550.
Best place to look is in the Want Ads.
Hope this helps.

As for guitars, I suspect prices are much better near the coast

I've heard a few things about Les Pauls:
o 1960's Les Pauls are way out of my price range;
o 1970's Les Pauls are not the best in terms of quality.
I also don't want to bother driving here and there all over the
state looking for a "good" guitar out of the dozens of used ones
on the market (actually, the latest WantAdvertiser didn't have too
many LP's in it and the ones it did have were all overpriced).
I've heard that $350 to $550 is the going rate for used ones; $450
is about what a used 1970's LP is really worth??
I'd also like to get the warranty that goes with a new one.

| re: .14, .15
Wood can be seasoned by air drying, which takes many years, or by
kiln-drying, which can be done quickly. Many luthiers and players
think that air-drying produces better wood, but you have to wait
for it.
Despite what .14 has been assured, Gibson has kiln dried their wood
since the '50's. The only difference between the seasoning on an
'88 guitar and a '68 guitar is the twenty years between their dates
of manufacture.

| So "well seasoned" = Seriously dry?
D.
|
155.18 | Is more to it | RAINBO::WEBER | | Fri Feb 24 1989 16:24 | 16 |
| Well-seasoned = seriously and uniformly dry. Kiln drying can reduce
the moisture content substantailly, but not as thoroughly as 5 years
of air drying, and there will tend to be more moisture deep in the
wood, which can cause instability.
It is virtually impossible for a large factory to rely on keeping
a suitable supply of air -dried wood, but small shops often do.
Frankly, I think for solid bodies this is of no consequence, but
flattops and archtops can benefit.
Quartersawn maple has a tendency to twist, so curly maple necks
are usually laminated. Jimmy D'Aquisto and Roger Borys use one-piece
necks of well-aged maple; the twist has been seasoned out before the
neck is shaped.

You ought to check out a Crate VC30-112 before you do
anything serious though. the amps is a small mind blower,
and I think it's pretty versatile, GREAT clean sound..
(No chorus thou.) good cruch.. excellent amp for
the $$$$$$$
As far as the 'pauls go, the black custom (2 humbukers)
is gonna be around $2,300 to $2,400 new (the retail,
as mentioned before is $3,499.) Now, the thing I'm not sure
of is if you can get a new black beauty gibson with 3 'buckers.
Also, last I heard about the Customs was that Father Gibson
for some reason, was making the 'customs a limited run only
model, and only in ??BLACK?? and of course, they'd start to
get rare as time goes on. (Yet another ploy by gibson to
drive us crazy, seems to be working..)
of course, not that you should go this route, but Epiphone
has a black beauty knock off... never seen one up close
and 'poisonall, but it is in the cataloge, it got a chuckle
out of me when I saw it.....

In a price/performance comparison, it's got the 335 beat,

You could also buy a regular black Les Paul Custom and add the 3rd

BTW, note that the description says that the black beauty has a
mahogany *top* and body. Is that true to the original? I thought
all of the 'pauls had maple tops?

Customs from the 50's were all mahogany -- it was a point that gave
Les Paul fits -- he claims that Gibson got his specifications
backwards, he had intended the custom, the more expensive model,
to have a maple top and the less expensive gold top to be 'plain'
mahogany, but the opposite is what actually happened.
When Gibson first 're-issued' Les Pauls in 1968, the custom was
changed to the more popular maple top configuration, and has been
that way until the 90's historic black-beauty re-issue came out.
FWIW - I came close to buying one of these a few years ago, *until*
I found out they were all mahogany -- I much prefer the tone from
the maple top.
I believe that Gibson is currently making a black custom with maple
top, which is a different model than the historic all-mahogany black
beauty reissue.
Me thinks they like to keep us confused...

published for this.. Maybe someone at the Guitar Center
or something, could look it up for you or point you to this
book.. guitars are usually listed by year, and by condition,
and there's three of four prices based on the condition of the
instrument.
My guess: not seeing what kind of shape it's in; but Since
it's about 25 years old, it could be up around the 2k area...
although the change in tuners could have devalued it, as it's
no longer stock..
However, finding a buyer for it, maybe a challange...
When ever the price is in the four figure range, the

Mine? It was a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top with a repaired broken
headstock, but otherwise in mint condition that I could have bought
for $75.00 with case!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I should have bought it and sent it to Gibson to be repaired, or
have another neck put on, but who knew? Did I tell you about that 1961
Corvette in dead mint condition with 20,000+ miles that I could have
bought for only $1,000!!!!
Yep, we can't beat ourselves up for the things, we sold, or passed up
in life since it'll just make us cRaZy!
Exactly... "who knew"?
DAMN! ;^)

| Does anyone care to debate the use of the term "vintage" in .51?

Just an observation...
The current Want Advertiser is loaded with Les Pauls. The $700 and
under versions are all Studios and Specials, $700-1000 puts you
into a newer Standard or an older Custom, and $1000-2000 buys the
newer Classic/Premium Classic models with the nice wood.
