    I used to have an Amigen, it was ok, did the job but not great quality
    wise.  I traded it in to a Supergen, now that's a good one plus it's
    got manual controls.

    PS if you have a Flicker Fixer, they have a small dauther board that
    will make it work with a genlock, but only for the Amigen and the
    Supergen.
    

Could you post more details about the Scanlock VSL? For instance, the details
of the discount, and a phone number to call for more information would
be nice. I'd love to swap my old CBM Genlock (A1300?) for something modern
that'd work on an A2000.

    I think the deal was $200 off if you trade in any Genlock device on the
    Scanlock. The rep said they have models for any Amiga. I don't have the
    number here, but I will post it later. Sounds like a deal to me....

    Ive been toying with the idea of building my own genlock. Does anybody
    have any ideas what sort of signals the Amiga expects?

    In dealing with the genlock I have I kind of got the idea that the
    Amiga does not look for much.I think it is more like what does the
    genlock look for? As far as I can tell the genlock passes the video
   signal from the external source,and adds the Graphics from the amiga.
    It appears that this is all done by the genlock,and the only thing
    the amiga does is supply the graphics.Now I use a genlock that is
    plugged into the video slot,while others I have seen go outside
    the Amiga.(Amigen) If you were to look at one of these you could
    probably get a good Idea of what is happening.Anyone out there 
    know what signals are input to this device? I look at mine and
    pray nothing ever happens to it,I cannot even begin to understand
    what is happening.So it looks like the bulk of the info you need
    will be found in the video world,and a small piece will be needed
    from the Amiga world.Of course this balance will change if you 
    want to build a software controlled device.First question, are
    you looking to use the Video slot,or take the amigen approach?

	Whoops!! I got blown away

	Well Bill, in order to mix or overlay two video sources they
	must have their composite syncs locked. Most cameras, VCR's
	etc. have no means to do this so the Amiga is the one that 
	needs to be locked to the other source. Now there are two
	input signals on the video plug which I believe are the ones
	that can do this. They are XCLK and _XCLKEN. I would guess
	that grounding the latter enables you to lock the Amiga to
	a sync signal on the former but I dont know the exact nature
	of the required signal.
		The only other type of genlock that i am aware of
	that can lock two async sources requires video2 to load a
	frame store that is read out in sync with video1. Very 
	expensive!!

    I can see your point. I was having trouble with my workbench screen
    breaking up at times when I was feeding the video signal into the
    genlock.(put Canon A1 MarkII in play mode) I called digital creations
    and Dennis had me try several different things.When I changed tapes
    the problem greatly improved,or went away.I believe it was the quality
    of the video signal from the first tape.Dennis recommended I try
    a TBC on the input video signal.  The expense of the Time
    base corrector is also high.I plan to try and rent one to see if
    it makes a great difference.Of course I can't rule out operator
    error at this point.Now I black my tapes before using them,and I
    think this is helping. I brought this up because it seems that even
    if you have a genlock you still have to deal with signal problems.
    The question is "do the external genlocks exhibit this type of 
    behavior" ? This problem will exhibit itself when I use the S VHS
    input,and the BNC input. The software allows me to select the amiga
    as a key signal, when I do this I see nothing of the input video.
    At this point I am not yet sure exactly what is happining,or why.
   I have no prints on the supergen,so am unable to get a clear picture
    (pardon the pun) as to how the clock signals work.

    Is the RGB port on the 3000 COMPLETLY compatible with the RGB port
    on the A1000.  He want to put his "old" A1300 genlock on his "new" 
    toy (without blowing it up if at all possible).

Well, I've used the same 1080 on all four flavors of Amiga, and it worked
like a charm.

However, the A13000 physically won't fit on anything but an A1000. It
expects to slide underneath the CPU box, into the back half of the keyboard
garage.

I used this genlock on my 2000 when it first came out. You'll have to make a
connecting cable to make it fit. This cable needs to be as short as possible
and shielded, else it doesn't work right (voltage levels, noise, etc).
My cable was 2".

You'll need to come up with a male and female 23 pin connector. The female
can be made by cutting a 25 pin one, the male will probably need to be purchased.

I also remember that I had to open it up and make 1 or 2 adjustments with
the internal potentimeters to get the picture just right.

It's a lot of work, I wouldn't go through it again myself. Sell it and
buy a new one.

Sorry; I forget that the 1080 is out of production so some people might not
know what it is.

It was the original Amiga monitor, sold with the A1000. Like I said, it works
on all flavors of Amiga up to and including the A3000.

    I have just purchased a A500+ mainly for use with video. Among other
    requirments I need a genlock. I have been looking at the mags and have
    got more than confused about what to purchase. I don't want to get in
    at the bottom end but then again don't want to get in at the deep end.
    I have looked at the mini-gen and also the rocgen as well as rendale
    boxes. Everyone seems to have an opinion but the general opinion seems
    to be that the �500+ units are wonderfull, anything less than that is ok
    but you pay the price in picture quality. I'm sure this sort of
    question has been asked before, but the thing I don't want to do is get
    one and find that I make the wrong choice. I would like to start with a
    resonably cheap one say �200'ish , if at some point later on I find I
    need a better on then I can upgrade.
    
    Just to fill in the rest ie: what equipment I use for the video side,
    all the original video is recorded on camera and for that I use a SONY
    V5000, I don't transfer to vcr via s video just the composite signal. I
    am more than happy with the picture quality . I'm recording to a JVC
    D860 nicam vcr and using a SONY RM-E700 edit controller. Most,but not
    all of what I film is motor racing. Using the amiga and dpaint III I
    want to put some better quality titles as a starting point ,and then
    when I really get the hang of things maybe some other bits and bobs. 
    
    If anyone has any experiance with the genlocks I have mentioned or for
    that matter can suggest other units that fit the bill I would be
