| JD,
Did you HAVE to bring up these painful memories right before the
weekend :-(
Remember the days before everyone had cable? I can still remember
sneaking a little radio into bed at night and listening to Marv Albert
and the Big Whistle describing the Ranger games. The blowouts of the
California Golden Seals, the pain of Bobby Hull's 3rd period goal in
game 7 of the semis to beat the Rangers 3-2 (4-2 with the ope net
goal). Brad Park never winning the Norris trophy because a young Park
had Bobby Orr to compete against, an older Park (on Boston) a guy named
Potvin to compete against. The GAG line and that horrendous evening
when Ratelle broke his leg costing the GAG line the chance to shatter
all scoring records by a line, and then lsoing in the finals to Boston
4-2, but with a great comeback in game 5 at Boston. Hadfield getting
his 50th goal on the last day of the season against the Canadiens.
The of cours the marvelous winter of 1979. Rangers beating the hated
Islanders 4 games to 2. Rangers beating Montreal in game 12 of the
finals, and leading 2-0 in game 2 before succumbing in 5 games. I was
overseas at the time and managed to catch it on shortwave radio from
Germany where Armed >Forces radio was broadcasting it (I was in Israel
for a while at the time). Davidson phenomenal in goal.
The 1986 team that could have beaten Montreal in the semis but didn't.
But maybe with a guy who knows how to win aka Messier, with Adam
Graves, a healthy goaltending squad and no incredibly dominating team
in the NHL this year it could happen. Be nice to get those Islander
fans who keep chanting 1940 over and over and over again.

I'd forgotten about that maroon. Bill Chadwick, I believe. Another
homer Noo Yawka that never should have had a mike in front of him.
Of course we Broon fans never had a homer in them days ( remember
old Cooney Weiland? They had to wake him up to do the commentary.
Old Pat "Boxcar" Egan took the cake. Simpleton).
Great rivalry with the Rangers in the early 70's. I watched Game 6
of the'72 finals away at school wif a bunch of Ranger fans. Man were
they PO'd when Orr took over the game and the Broons paraded the Cup
around Madison Sq. Ha Ha!!. Of course I gave them the "Bill Russell-to-
Doris Day line", "Not this year, boys!!"
How 'bout the NY organist playing "Don't talk to the Animals" when the
Broons took the ice in Madison Sq in '70, and the signs " Sanderson is
a Hairy Fairy" Too much.
I remember Brad Park published a book in the early '70's with one
chapter lambasting the 'Big Bad Bruins'. Phil Esposito's classic
retort, " Well just remember, Park spelled backwards is Krap!"
Ah the memories. As far as '79 goes, remember Ranger fans, that the
second best team in the NHL that year lost to the Habs in the semis
in SEVEN (OT). 8^)

With the luck the Rangers have had Messier could of course get injured.
Beating Montreal will be very tough even if the Rangers have home ice
advantage. In the NHL a hot goalie (Dryden in???, Roy in 1986, Smith on
the Islanders) can single handedly take a team much further than it
should go. If Roy stays as hot as he has been all season Montreal will
be very tough to beat unless the other team can limit them to 1-2 goals

| The moment of truth for the Rangers may have come last nioght when the
Devils came back from a 5-0 deficit to make it 5-4. Then later when the
Devils scored 27 seconds after the Rangers made it 6-4.
Mike Gartner who has a rep of disappearing in the playoffs is playing
well, and Adma Graves came throguh with his first 2 playoff goals whne
the score was 6-5.
Hopefully the Rangers will finish off NJ in 6 and Pitt will find a way
to take the Caps to a 7th game, and maybe even win the series. The
teams that scare me most are Edmonton and Montreal. Montreal because
they often find some way to win (just ask Bruin fans), Edmonton because
they have played so well in the playoffs no matter who has been on
their team.
Unfortunately with the way the playoffs are set up the toughest thing
for the Rangers may be getting out of the division.

| Sure, why not. Lets see if the Rangers get in first. I'll be outta
town nexted week so we'll have to figure it out this week. I'll tell
you though, I'd rather see the Broons play the Rangers than the Pens.
Too much fire power, as they found out last year!

But Lemeuix is probably out for the season which means they have a lot
less firepower then last year. Rangers were one of the highest scoring
teams this year and Graves will miss a maximum of 1 game in the next
series.

| Ok Denny same deal as with Jake if the Rangers do face the Bruins, I
won't presume to make a bet if the Penguins get in.
If Rangers face the Bruins and Rangers win you use the p-name
Rangers beat Bruins X games to Y with the appropriate substitution for
X and Y. Vice versa if Bruins beat the Rangers.
P-name remains until the Stanley Cup finals are finished. Should the
Rangers win the Stanley Cup your p-name then becomes for one week
NY Rangers, Stanley Cup Champions
if Bruins win the Cup mine becomes for one week
Boston Bruins, Stanley Cup Champions

early goal and then a penalty shot goal. Rangers tied it in the 3rd,
Pens got a goal with 5 or so minutes left in the 3rd and hung on from
there.
Nearly every championship team has a defining moments in the playoffs.
Clearly this is the Rangers gut wrenching moment. Either they have what
it takes and somehow pull out game 6 in Pitt and finally another game

| Another shattered dream. No excuses though. Penguins came through in
game 4 and the Rangers never completely recovered. Penguins played good
intelligent hockey and were just a little better when they had to be.
Only silver lining is looking back at the 1979 Islanders who were
widely favored to win or at least contend in the finals for the Stanley
Cup. They lost to the underdog Rangers in 6 games and came back the
following year to start a streak of 4 Stanley Cups in a row. Yeah it's
grasping for a silver lining, but ...
I never thought I would root for the Bruins to sweep a series. Not that
I really loathe the Penguins, but the sooner they lose, the sooner I
get my p-name back. No matter what I will root for the winner of the
Chicago/Edmonton series in the Cup finals.

| Yeah, but the old 1920s uniforms are wicked rad! Gotta like the red and
balck stripes. Much better than those wussy teal and silver San Jose
Sharks stuff that seems to be pretty popular. I also heard the Wails are
gonna change their colors. Lemmie guess, think they'll go for black,
since its the most trendy color these days? Maybe not, cause this will
cause roving gangs of insurance salesmen and underwriters will be
terrorizing the good citizens of Asylum Street, smashing store windows
at G.Fox, and burning down the West Farms Mall, while wearing their
mean-looking *BLACK* satin wailers jackets....

Dread,
There was a BIG article on this in the Courant a few months back.
The main problem is GREEN. Green on the road uniforms doesn't show
very well on TV. It looks more yukky than they do in real life.
Second, Green is not a marketable color. For example, the White
Celtics jackets outsell the Green ones by like 70-30.
So the Whales were thinking of changing their road uniforms to blue
and silver.
The official colors of the team are White, Green, Blue. They even
showed a touched up picture of a Whaler in a road uniform which looked
blue.....
Hope dis helps, mon,
'Saw
