- Dean Smif wins NCAA Championship by adapting the
system to come from behind in a game where he is
heavily favored.
- The same year, the Whalers win Lord Stanley's Cup
first by sweeping the Bruins (allowing them only
5 goals in the four game series) then dismantling
the Canadiens in five games. The series against
the Rangers is bloody, but the Whalers score in OT
in the 6th game to take the Conference. Finally,
they annihilate Gretzky and the Kings with physical
play, and take the Cup in 4 straight.
- The Red Sox win the World Series, betting the Cardinals
in 5 games. In an even more amazing related story,
Mike Greenwell and Mo Vaughn get along so well they
become business partners running an aligator farm in
Florida. Roger Clemens decides he's making too much
money and give most of it to charity, and Frank Viola
stays healthy the entire season, winning 22 games.

| Speaking of which, the movie critic on the Today show (the dude with the
mega-moustache and outrageous 'do) found a rather gaping clitch with the new
movie The Babe. It has to do with a rather basic baseball rule, I'll put it
behind a <FF> in case ya want to figure it out for yourself...
It seems that in Babe's last game when hit hit three dingers, the movie has a
pinch runner run the bases for him after each of his first two. As Mr.
Reviewer pointed out, everyone over the age of 9 who has ever played baseball
knows that you are out of the game once someone runs for you. The gaffe was a
major point of contention in the movie for Mr. Reviewer.

| Well, I for one can't understand why ANYONE would go see a movie about a
candy bar. From what I've heard, they didn't use real nuget in the movie.
ALthough Goodman would make a fine candy bar, methinks that anyone wasting
their time and money to see the trials and tribulations of a sugar bomb is
really lacking in the grey matter department.
I did hear that at the end of the movie, they have a scene where an almond
joy bar (played by Carol Wayne) replaces the Babe - cause the Babe has been
eaten by some kid who just got out of the hospital. A little later, however,
they have the *same* Babe Ruth bar - and we all know that you can't eat the
Babe but once!

Turns out the name of the little kid Morris was portraying was

when the other one was built at 155th st & 8th Avenue (1906?), they kept
the name, even though polo was never played there.
There were a few changes to the PG over the years. There were a couple
of fires, and eventually it was rebuilt in concrete and steel, with
wooden bleachers going the length of the oval-shaped field. Eventually
it was double decked all the way around, except for deepest CF where
the clubhouse was, about 500 feet from the plate. The last game there

Playing in Milwaukee wasn't the way to grab headlines, unlike NY and

I often wonder about how he felt about that. Since I was sort of a
Braves fan just before they moved from Boston, I kept track of them
somewhat, and a good friend of mine was a rabid Braves fan, so I heard
a lot about them. I knew he was a heck of a ballplayer, but there was
Eddie Mathews and of course Spahn and Burdette, so the glory got spread
around a bit. Hank never, ever seemed to be the loudmouth type of guy,
and I only remember some controversy around him later in his career.
If I were to pick an all-time team, he and Ernie Banks would be two of
my starters. They came to play, and they performed. What more can you
ask of a player? Always loved Banks statement, "Let's play two!"

| Playing his entire career in Milwaukee and Atlanta certainly did not
help Aaron gain the spotlight he so richly deserved. Had he been a
Yankee or Dodger or Cub, he certainly would have gained more attention.
As far as the pressure he encountered while closing in on Ruth's
record, it must have been terrible for him. Yet, Roger Maris
experienced an awful hate capaign the year he broke Ruth's "60" mark.
Oddly, Mantle, who was running neck and neck with Roger into September,
was not the object of such hatred.
Not to diminish the feats of Aaron or Mantle, but every time I hear of
these records, it makes me appreciate, even more, the incredible feats
of the Babe.

| Maris/Aaron
Roger M. got a lot of hate for these reasons :
1) He hit .269 - Rogers Hornsby wondered aloud how could a .269 hitter
be worthy of breaking Ruth's mark.
2) Maris had only been in NY 2 or 3 years. Mantle didn't become
'beloved' by the fans until Maris showed up as an object of venting.
Irony isn't it ? Mantle was the NY whipping boy for years ... wonder
how many fans and press will admit to it now ?
3) Ford Frick's "asterick ruling" didn't help matters much.
4) Of course, the Babe Ruth Jihad ...
With all of that, I don't think that Maris got death threats the way
Aaron later did (he needed 24-hour protection), but in both cases, I
can admire what they went through, and shake my head at how a lot of
so-called fans can taint what should have been the greatest moment in
the lives of these men.

| re Maris
Doc, I know many of the death threats Aaron received were race related
and that makes his situation even more distressful. But, I used to
spend summers with my grandfather in Jamaica, NY. Maris had an
apartment 5 blocks away in '60. I used to meander up there and watch
the crowds of NY media jammed around that place. They hounded that guy
from mid July til the end of the season.
Maris was a quiet guy, sort of like Jim Rice. Had he been outgoing like
Pete Rose, perhaps the pressure would not have been as much. I recall
seeing Maris seceral times that summer scurrying in and out of the
apartment building, jerk reporters chasing him. Really sad.
As far as Mantle being a whipping boy, it was more of a "Hail Mick When
We Win, Blame Mick When We Lose" situation. And since the Yankees won
most of the time, he was mostly adored and loved in NY.
When I think back to those summers and I was in the midst of Mays,
Snider and Mantle playing in the same city, it is amazing. My
grandfather read the Daily News which favored the Yankees and Dodgers.
My friends father liked the Post or Daily Mirror - any way, that paper
favored the Giants. The Times favored polo matches out in the Hamptons.

Apparently Maris, unlike Mantle, didn't have one of the most gracious
and open of personalities, and unfortunately that spurred a lot of the
resentment. A while back I was reading an opinion piece from an old
issue of SI (normally a pretty even-handed publication) from right
around the time Maris was traded to the Cardinals, and uncharacteristically
they really let him have it for his perceived boorish behavior while in
New York. For some reason, if some elements of the media find a
personality they don't like, instead of just letting it go and
relegating their commentary to the player's performance (hey, the media
can do a guy favors, too, but if he doesn't want them, then that's also
his decision) they feel they have the right to make it a public issue,
when the guy isn't paid for his social graces...
Worst of all is the hypocrisy, though. After his death Maris was
magically transformed into this poor misunderstood country boy who
sought only to avoid the limelight. Hey, I figure that if you thought
and wrote that the guy was a cur while he was alive, it's pretty
cowardly to back away from that after he's met misfortune...

| I personally didn't like Maris, but then I didn't like Mantle, either.
It didn't have anything to do with their personalities, they were
Yankees, so I hated them in regards to their ballplaying abilities.
But, even though I didn't want the Babe's record broken by anyone, I
was very angry at the way Maris was treated, particularly by the Babe's
widow. She was outrageous in her comments, and the media give it play.
What I often wonder about is how Ruth would have fared in today's
baseball. Travel is much better, as are the training methods and the
medical assistance. But, night games are supposedly more difficult
than day games. The way the media treated players was very different
than what one sees today, which adds a lot of pressure when compared to
the days when stars were revered and their private lives were not
publicized in detail.
Makes you wonder, no?

| Maris was a brooding introvert ala Jim Rice. He was cast into the
microscope of the nations most inquisitive media and was chasing the
record held by one of America's folk heros. Imagine if, say, Jack Clark
was closing in on Lou Gherig's consecutive game mark. Given Jack's
"pinache", the public would be screaming bloody murder.
Maris was no Jack Clark (thankfully) yet he could not handle the
attention. Didn't like or want it.
Yeah, Doc, Jamaica. Spent many a summer on 144th St between Hillside
Ave and Parsons Blvd. Maris' apartment was just off the Grand Central
Parkway near Parsons Blvd.
And Lee is correct about what the media can do for a person in a
positive way. I just have to look at Larry Bird for this. Here's a guy
who has the wit of a slug, the vocabulary of a C student in the 7th
grade and the looks of years of inbreeding. Yet, he gave his monotone
interviews, dutifully, which pleased the scribes. He cooperated with
them so they, in turn, made him a legend. Had Larry treated the press
differently, I wonder how he would have been recorded throughout the
years. Just ask Jim Rice, Bill Russell, Ted Williams or other outspoken or
introverted Boston athletes how "kind" the Boston media can be.....
Or Jim Plunkett, for that matter.

Glenn,
I am NOT try to assissinate the character of Larry Bird. If you or
anyone else interpretted my note that way, you or they are mistaken as
to my intention.
What I was attempting to convey was an extention of Lee's premise that
the media could help as well as hinder an athlete's image. Case in
point for the "help" side is Larry.
I agree that he has gotten better in his use of words as the years have
gone by but he is by no means as artistic and well spoken as Havlicek
or Erving. But he was always willing to drop a few lines to the press
after every game. Even though they always seemed the same ("Weplayeda
toughgametonightwithalottaintensity. CoachcalledmyplayandIwasluckythe
ballwentin") the press got their quotes for the next day's paper or
that evenings sports' cast. Contrast that with Williams' relations with
the press or how Rice was never willing to talk, on a regular basis,
with reporters. Media venom ensued.
This same thing happened with Maris. Too many members of the media have
this self-rightous image of themselves whereby they believe ONLY they
hold the key to a players' potential stardom. Face it, the local media
could have hyped the "Hick from French Lick" theme if Larry shut them
off and he would have been gone after one or 2 years. In towns like New
York and Boston they have that power.
I am not totally up on how the Philly press reacted to Carlton, but if
they respected his decision, they are a rare breed. And, as far as I
know, the fans continued to support him.

| He hasn't been in Detroit for 18 years, has he? He hasn't had the
talent there other teams have had because the farm system was been
squat. This year was a disappointment. Last year with little/no
pitching, they wound up second. They haven't had a solid pitching
staff since 87 or so (the last time they won the pennant).
Give Sparky Viola and Clemens, and you have a contending ball club.
I mean, where would the sox be if their ace was Bill Gullickson?
With Walt Terrell and Frank Tanana? Sparky can't do everything.

Valiant Break, the all-time loser in harness racing with no wins in
86 races (musta been a regular at Hinsdale!) faces a challenger he has
a chance of beating: Beasley Reece, former NY Giants defensive back.
The 110-yard man-vs-horse race takes place at Yonkers Raceway. Reece
gets off to a quick start and holds on for a half-length victory.

What I'd like to know is why a horse that went 0 for 86 got sent to the

86th start that Valiant Break was more suited for the glue factory than
the half-mile oval...

In Southampton England, Tony Wilson is being pummeled by local
favorite Steve McCarthy in a light-heavyweight bout. Suddenly Tony's
mother, Minna, charges into the ring to rescue her son and starts
hitting McCarthy with her spiked heel. When McCarthy leaves the ring in
disgust, Wilson is awarded a decision. When Wilson leaves the ring the
crowd tries to beat him up. Later the bout will be declared a
no-decision. Wilson will ban his mother from his future bouts.

In the 8th inning of the 1st game of the World Series, the Giants'
Willie Mays makes a great back-to-the Plate catch of Vic Wertz's long fly to
preserve a 2-2 tie with the favored Indians. In the bottom of the 10th,
unlikely hero Dusty Rhodes hits a 3-run pinch homer off Bob Lemon to
give the Giants a 5-2 win, the first pinch homer to win a WS game.
Rhodes will hit a 2-run pinch single and homer in the Giants' 3-1 win
in game 2 and a 2-run pinch single to key a 6-2 victory in game 3.
He'll drive in 7 runs in 6 at-bats, as the Giants sweep the Series.

Yesterday was the date for completely moving US of A to the metric
system. Congress somehow came up with Sep. 30, 92 to have us all
litering, metering, kilograming.
About the only I notice any effect is when I go to the ABC store and get
750 ml of Absolut, prefering the 100 very non-metrical proof.
So unless something came up late lasted night, I think the we missed the
deadline. And certainly, sports didn't change.

Subject: Sad Anniversary this Saturday
Date: 12 Nov 92 22:51:52 GMT
This Saturday, November 14, marks the 22nd anniversary of the worst
sports-related disaster in American history. On this date in 1970, a Southern
Airways DC-10 carrying the Marshall University football team, coaching staff,
and most of the booster club home from a game at East Carolina University
crashed short of the runway in Huntington, WV, killing all 75 people aboard--
including the entire coaching staff and all but three varsity players.
In the year prior to the crash, Marshall had been placed on probation for
recruiting violations and had been banished from the Mid-American conference.
The program had not had a winning season since 1964, and did not have another
until 1984. In fact they were, statistically speaking, the losingest Division
I football program in the decade of the seventies.
Marshall is currently ranked 10th in division I-AA and was runner up in the
division last season. The Marshall story is truly remarkable, and is a real
lesson in determination.

The plane went down into the woods in Eastern Kentucky and it was very
