| Let's see, general news around the Hockey East....
Last weekend (1/11, 1/12() Clarkson and St. Lawrence made a trip down
here to play BC and BU. Neither one of them showed up at Conte Forum as
both of them were blown out by BC. Three late goals by Clarkson made it
respectable (8-5), but all in all, neither ECAC team was worth the
gasoline to get them here. In fact BC fell in the National rankings
from 2nd to 3rd for their efforts over the weekend. (I know all you
ECAC people are going to get in an uproar, but believe me, neither of
these teams were any good. RPI and Harvard are a lot better.)
BU split with both teams, blowing out St. Lawrence, and just getting
nipped by Clarkson after spotting them a 3-0 lead. BU had a goal, which
would have made the score 4-4, called back. No question in my mind
what would have happened, had the Terriers tied the score!
BU took over the top spot in Hockey East beating UNH Tuesday night
while Maine finally learned how to beat BC in Orono. A goal at the ten
minute mark of the 3rd period stood up as Maine hung on to win 6-5.
Maine's only losses last year at Alfond Arena were back-to-back jobs to
BC.
BU visits the unfriendly confines of Conte Forum tonight, before what
is expected to be a sell-out (probably record) crowd. BC won the first
meeting between the two earlier this year.
Maine arrives for the rubber match at Conte Forum at 2PM Sunday. Maine
is 2-4-0 (1-4-0 against BC) in visits to the Forum. Their only victory
against BC was in 1989 on an overtime goal which won them the Hockey
East Championship.
It'll be a really good weekend for college hockey here in Boston.

| Over the weekend.....
BC over BU, forgot the score even though I was there!
Maine abused UNH in Durham.
BC came from behind and beat Maine on Sunday 5-4 on a goal by Marc
Behren with less than 3 minutes to go.
On Tuesday night BC travelled up to Hanover and lunched Dartmouth,
although looking at the ECAC standings this is not out of the ordinary
this year.
BC plays back to back games with Lowell this weekend, before travelling
to Cornell on Tuesday night.
RE: Clarkson
What I saw last Sunday was pitiful. The Knights looked out of it. It
could be that BU beat them up on Friday night, but in all honesty I
don't think they are Top 10 material. Prior to their game at Conte
Forum they had been 4-1 against Hockey East opponents. I might be
wrong, but I don't think that they had played Maine who is next to
impossible to beat at home.
Re: Standings
In Hockey East it is still going to come down to which teams can deal
with Maine, BC and BU. BC is 23-0 (13-0 this year) at home during the
regular season. I think their last home loss during the regular season
was against Michigan State in November 1989, or there abouts.
This year alone, BC has been involved in 12, one goal games including
the game on Sunday against Maine. They are not a team for the faint of
heart.
More later.....

ECAC: Cornell beat Colgate and Dartmouth. Colgate also beat
Dartmouth. Brown beat Yale. Clarkson beat RPI and Vermont. Vermont
beat St Lawrence. Don't know how RPI did against St Lawrence.

In the hockey notes file there is an interesting computer poll based on
strength of schedule. In that poll Providence is ranked 6th, UNH is
ranked 12th, and Merrimack is 27th.
Out of the 44 division 1 teams, Merrimack as the 39th toughest
schedule. One of the easiest in the country.
The hockey notes file is STKCSC::HOCKEY
College Hockey is note 20. The poll is in 20.46. It is a few weeks
old. I would be interested in seeing an updated version.

| Let's see.....
Tonight BC travels to Cornell. Given the questionable road record of
the Eagles this year, I'm not sure what will happen. Last years game at
Conte wasn't much of a game, but Cornell is murder at Linah.
Merrimack makes the trip to Conte Forum Friday night for the third
game of the series this season. They have played to two, one goal
games this year in Andover.
Beanpot match-ups next Monday are:
BC - NU at 6. BC has abused the Huskies twice this year already, which
means that Northeastern will no doubt find the meaning of life, and
lunch the Eagles big time!
BU - Harvard at 9. This one depends on which BU team shows up. If it's
the one that went to Orono over the weekend, Harvard will cruise.
Ought to be interesting.

Stick with it, Hawk! I went through the same disillusionment after
personal circumstances caused me to drop out of day school and resume
at night, but I decided that if I was gonna get the degree that way I
was going to do it as quickly as possible to get it over with (agreed
on ULowell Continuing Ed; the bureaucracy there makes you want to pull
your hair out sometimes, especially that guy in charge of the
engineering department). I was taking 3-4 classes a semester and even
a couple in the summer over four years, and all I can say is that in
spite of the torture it really did pay off (couldn't have done it
without extreme patience from my wife, though). Started getting
rewarded for what I was already doing at work, for starters...

| Hey Hawk,
Depending on your reason for wanting the degree, like just to
say ya got the paper as opposed to REALLY wanting to excell in
obtaining knowledge and learning, ya might want to look into the
Lesley College PMBI program.
Tonight is my LAST class and when I deliver the project paper
(hopefully by February-end), I'll have earned my BS in 57 weeks!
Basically you need 57 credits (minimum) & 3 years full time work
experience to enter. Anything "C" or better they take. Curriculum
is 12 courses (modules), x * 5 WEEKS * = 39 credits. Anything short
of the required 128 is earned with life credit, clep tests, essays,
DEC classes, military service, and many many more. Class is 1x
a week, 4 hours long. Plan on at least 20 - 40 hours per week for
homework & stuff. ~90% of the instructors are real world workers
moonlighting so they understand and they try to bring reality into
the course content.
If ya want more info, gimme a call & we can chat. Same goes to
anyone who has been putting off going back to school.
On the humorous side, I'll be attending graduation exercises @BU
in May and I have never seen nor even put one foot onto the Lesley
Campus! I'm told it's somewhere in Cambridge......

| The best thing that can happen nexted Monday is for BU to win again.
That way Len "Cementhaid" Ceglarski can crown his career of being the
biggest choke artist in the history of college hockey. Year in, year
out, Cementhaid's teams field a who's who in college hockey, and year
in and year out, they totally choke in the big ones. He's never one
anything, despite having the best talent. 2 Beanpots in the last 23
years. 0 Ncaa champeenships. He makes Dean Smith look like JOhn

| The only problem with your last reply is the fact that Lenny hasn't
been the BC coach for the last 23 years. One thing is for
sure though....The only place Northeastern is going after February 27th
is HOME for an expended Spring Break.....8 months worth. I'll send you
a program...They'll probably take the pipe for the fifth time this year
to BC. :-)
We'll see what happens Monday night...BC and BU are probably destined
to play 5 times this year...The only one that really matters is the one
on either March 8th or March 10th....assuming of course BU learns how
to beat Maine :-).

11.41 | BU exudes confidence | NEMAIL::LEARYM | | Wed Feb 06 1991 10:31 | 38 |
| I'll stand by my prediction that BU will beat BC in the finals.
Watching BU alums and current players talking about "owning" the
Garden and believing that this tournament is always theirs for the
taking confirms my belief that the Terriers have always played this
tournament as if they were the favorite,no matter what the talent
level of their team. If you look back in history(recent,i.e last
20 yrs.) it has been a rare occasion that any team has had a
superior edge in talent over BU. Year in and year out BU consistently
fields a good, talented team. Case in point; BU has never played in
the consolation game. The only team that I thought had a superior
edge in talent over BU was the Harvard team of a couple of years ago
that won the NCAA's. And they still were in a dogfight with BU in
the finals( 9-6).
I disagree that Ceglarski is a choker. I don't think he is as
good as recruiter or coach as Jackie Parker, that doesn't mean he
chokes. I believe his teams rise to the occasion because of their
talent and his coaching (parker's that is). I think that the"greatness"
of recent BC teams have been overemphasized by the pro-BC Boston media.
BU's teams have equalled or been better than BC's consistently since
Parker has been at BU( which includes Snooks Kelley as well as
Ceglarski).BC has had some darn good teams, but never a great one.
I look for a great game Monday, though,as I think the teams THIS year
are almost evenly matched. If Heinze is back for BC,it will be a
"pick-em". I believe the difference will be BU's combination of size
and speed,especially on "d".
BU 5, BC 3.
MikeL
BTW, Ceglarski was quoted in this morning's Globe, I believe, that
he felt that at the beginning of the year, that BU would be the
best team in the country. I think they(BU) are starting to round
into form.

| BU has played in the consolation game only 8 times. They are therefore
31-8 in first round games.
Ceglarski and Parker started at their respective schools at the same
time, if I'm not mistaken. Jack Kelley's last year at BU was 1971-72
before he left to become head coach and GM of the Whalers. He was
replaced by Leon Abbott. Abbott had some trouble with recruiting
violations or some such (I don't remember the details) and was replaced
by Parker either during that season, between the seasons or during the
73-74 season. Ceglarski took over at BC after the 72-73 season.

| Thanks John,
Me memory ain't as sharp as it used to be. I thought that Parker
had preceded Ceglarski by a year or two. I remember going to the
Garden for the Beanpot as well as the ECAC tournaments in the late
60's and early 70's. As far as the ECAC's it seemed that either
BU or BC was always there with Cornell being a fixture. I recall
that occasionally Ceglarski brought in some competetive Clarkson
teams. Best highlights were the Cornell crowd going nuts when some
fan would do a little rap on the cowbell as the Big Red came on
the ice.
Them were the days.

I can't disagree with you about the BU attitude. They certainly have
a good one. I think they were ranked #1 preseason for both Hockey East
and the preseason pole.
I agree with your assessment of the "keys" to the game. I'd further add
that the game will ride on which BU defense shows up. If it was the one
that went to Maine two weeks ago, or showed up at Conte Forum on
Jan. 18th, it could be a long night. On the other side, if Ron
Pascucci(sp) and Joe Cleary don't figure it out, it'll be a long night
the other way. I think that NU scored all three of it's goals while
they were paired on defense.
It really should be fun.
Tonight should tell a lot for BC. UNH travels to Conte for the rubber
match of the season. It's hard to say what will happen here. My guess
is, that it'll be another one goal affair.

BC 7 - Lowell 3
BU over Providence
Maine over Merrimack
BC 10 - Northeastern 8 - Two late goals against BC's third string goalie
made this one close. Tom Cole, who made 51 saves in the opening round of
the Beanpot against BC, lasted less than 22 minutes of this one. BC
ended its home schedule at 17-0. These included two wins each against
Maine, BU and UNH, as well as single wins against Clarkson, St. Lawrence,
Harvard, and Michigan.
BC needs a tie or a win in one of its last two games to win the regular
season title. The game Wednesday night at Providence means a lot, as
Providence is in a race with UNH for the last home ice spot. The Friars
would rather not have to go up to Durham.
Upcoming games of interest:
2/20 BC at Providence (Home ice for the Friars at stake here)
BU at Northeastern
2/23 BC at BU (Could decide the potential 3/8 match-ups at Hockey
fest)
Maine at UNH (Should BC falter, a must win for the Bears, on the
other side, UNH wants home ice).

| Would not surprise me about Maine being ranked 4th. It depends which
poll you believe.
I think on the surface Maine is probably playing as well as anybody at
the moment. How far Maine goes will depend on who they have to play on
Friday night. They have been able to beat BU at will, but have only
beaten BC twice in three years; once in overtime two years ago to win
the Hockey East Championship, and once this year at Orono.
If I were a Black Bear fan, I'd want to see BC have to beat BU on
Friday night, and I'd, then, take my chances with the survivor
(BU, unless BC figures out what to do with their defense) on Sunday
afternoon. Maine, however, for the third year in a row, does not
control its own fate or its eventual opponent...BC does.
This all assumes of course, that the favorites survive the
quarter-final game on the 27th. Don't be surprised if one of the
favorites gets lunched. It happens every year.
Should be interesting.....

| Walt,
I don't know why Harvard would have the edge over RPI either. One of
the tie-breakers, after record against each other, is number of wins.
RPI would have the edge here because the only way Harvard and RPI could
end up with the same record is for Harvard to sweep and RPI to tie both
its games.
In looking at the standings, Yale, Brown and Colgate will finish 7-9.
Clarkson, Cornell and St Lawrence have clinched home ice and RPI is in
good shape.
In Hockey East, other than the dog fight at the top, the standings are
virtually cast in concrete.
In the CCHA, the only real battle left is to decide 3rd, 4th and 5th
because all other slots are set. Ohio State and Illinois-Chicago are
battling it out just to see where they go to get killed - Michigan or
Lake Superior.
In the WCHA, home ice is all decided with the only battle there being
between Wisconsin and North Dakota to figure out who finishes 3rd or
4th. St Cloud is all set for 5th, Duluth and Tech are close for 6th
and 7th, and all Denver and Colorado are battling for are the right to
be clobbered by Northern Michigan.
Hockey - winter's one true *REAL* college sport.

| In Hockey East, the dates for the first round of the playoffs have been
picked and apparently they're up to the individual schools. BC will
host February 27, BU will host February 28, the game between UNH and PC
(wherever it is) will be March 1 and Maine will host March 2.
Tonight in Hockey East sees BC at PC, BU at NU and UNH at Merrimack.
Games Saturday are BC at BU, Maine at UNH, NU at PC and Lowell at
Merrimack.
In the ECAC, the single games among seeds 7-10 are February 26. Walt,
the Globe also states that Harvard will beat out RPI for home ice if
they end up tied but they didn't explain why.

| In last night's action, BU beat NU, UNH beat Merrimack and Providence
beat BC 3-2 on a goal with 1:30 remaining.
NU is now guaranteed of finishing last.
Home ice between PC and UNH remains unsettled.
In games on Saturday, NU is at PC, Lowell at Merrimack, Maine at UNH
and BC at BU.
First place is up for grabs. A win for BC means BC finishes
first, Maine second and BU 3rd. That would mean Merrimack at BU,
Lowell at Maine and NU at BC in the first round. A win for Maine
coupled with a BC loss means Maine finishes first, BC second and BU
3rd. A loss for Maine and a BU win puts Maine in second.
NU plays at Maine or BC, Merrimack plays at Maine or BU and Lowell
plays at any one of the top 3 contenders (in what will almost certainly
be Billy Riley's last game as Lowell coach).

| BU lost leads of 3-0 and 4-1 to BC as the Eagles win the regular
season HockeY East crown. The record BU crowd saw Dave Fransoza's(sp)
goal with 2:50 remaining stand up as the Eagles sweep the league series
with the Terriers. Sandy Galluppo made 18 third period saves to get the
win.
The Eagles will now host the Northeastern Huskies. This will be the
fifth game this year between the teams. BC has won them all. The Eagles
are 17-0 at Kelly Rink this year. They are 5-2 lifetime at Kelly in
Hockey East play-off action.
I would expect to see Sandy Galluppo in goal Wednesday night, although
it is possible that Scott LeGrand will get the call. He is something
like 19-0 at Kelly over the last two years.
Should be interesting.

Interesting, the obvious prejudice that Hockey East teams are
that superior to ECAC teams. BU at 13-6-2 (22-10-2 overall)
is ranked above both Clarkson and Cornell?
I find it hard to believe that the 3rd place Hockey East team
is really better than the #1 and #2 ECAC team.

Gary, maybe it's because the Hockey East teams play a "tougher"
schedule. They play teams from the CCHA and the WCHA as well as
thier Hockey East foes. I do not follow the ECAC enough to know
exactly but don't they just play a schedule within the ECAC?

| Both the ECAC and Hockey East teams play roughly the same number of
league games. ECAC teams play 22 games, home and away with each of 11
opponents. Hockey East teams play 21 games, 3 with each of 7
opponents. Where they differ is in their non-league schedules. Ivy
League ECAC teams are limited to 26 total regular season games, or 4
non-league games, although Dartmouth was allowed to play 6 games this
year. For example, Harvard plays 2 games in the Beanpot and played BC
and BU in non-Beanpot games this year. Non-Ivy League ECAC teams are
limited to 30 total regular season games. Hockey East teams are
allowed to play the NCAA maximum regular season games. That's part of
the reason - Hockey East is perceived as playing a tougher non-league
schedule. Hockey East is also perceived to be a tougher top to bottom
league than the ECAC is (I'm not saying it is, it is perceived to be)
and as a result, all things being equal, a Hockey East team with an
equivalent record to an ECAC team will be ranked higher.
The limitation on games played was one of the reasons for the formation
of Hockey East in the first place.
I don't know how to explain that ECAC schools have won 2 National
Titles since the split while Hockey East schools have won 0.

11.67 | BU lost to Clarkson, but... | DUSTER::TIRRELL | | Tue Feb 26 1991 14:02 | 20 |
| BU lost to Clarkson on Jan. 11th at Walter Brown Arena. One of the
problems with the ECAC this year is the "leader du jour". No one team
in the league seems to take control of the lead position for very long.
I have to think that the rankings are based on the fact that the season
happened to ended with Clarkson second. Having seen Clarkson on Jan 12th,
and BU four times this year, I'd have to say that even with the loss,
BU is better.
In all honesty, there really isn't a lot of difference between the top
three teams of Hockey East this year: BC, Maine, and BU. The differences
in the standings are really BU's inability to beat Maine, and Maine's
inability to beat BC. They are very close. Assuming all three survive
first round games, Hockey Fest will be a war!
The chest pounding between the two leagues is well documented in
earlier versions of this file, but this year Hockey East has three very
powerful teams at the top of the league.
We'll see...

OH yeah, forgot in the previous reply....
At least five, and maybe six of the BU losses have been to BC
(3) and Maine (at least 2). Both BC and Maine have been ranked in the
top five more or less all year. I don't know if Maine played Clarkson,
but on Jan. 12th, fresh off their win against BU, Clarkson was destroyed
by BC at Conte Forum.
Don't know if this settles the issue, but it could play into some of
the pollsters thinking.

To add to John's stat of titles, in every NCAA tournament since the

Hockey East finish... so who knows... let them keep underating the
ECAC...

| There used to be distinct Divisions 1, 2 and 3 in college hockey. What
happened was that most of the schools that would be considered Division
2 wanted to move down to Division 3 due to the dominance of a few
schools (kind of what happens in high school hockey here in
Massachusetts) so there really wasn't a viable Division 2 any more.
The Division 3 schools who end up in the playoffs are really Division 2
schools and they are the ones who compete for the national title.

11.75 | What makes it Division 1,2,3? | COGITO::HILL | | Wed Feb 27 1991 09:42 | 28 |
| Are there any clear distinctions between whether a school belongs in a
certain division? Enrollment? Budgets allocated to the program? Size of
coaching staff? Scholarships?
I used to have this endless discussion with Irwin Cohen, Northeastern's
AD when I was there, about the soccer program. NU is a "Division I
school" in many sports, being in a very big time hockey (don't laugh)
and qualifying for the NCAAs in hoop for several years running.
However, the soccer budget was virually nil, and they would routinely
get stomped on by BC, BU, Harvard, Providence, UConn, etc. schools with
significanlty better budgets, and (with the exception of Harvard)
blue-chip scholarship athletes. NU was stricly walk-ons. NU would do
well against good Div II and III schools, but really couldn't compete
on the same level as the free-ride recruiters.
I said that the school should be Div II in soccer, but Cohen would say
that since we're Div I in everything else, we should also be that way
for soccer. Fine then, as long as you give the coach a fighting chance
to build a competitive program, like scholarships, a decent budget,
etc. He spewed out the usual rhetorical dogma that all administrators
preach, that there is sufficient financial aid available for students
in general, and that a blue-chip soccer player can get his pell grant
just like anyone else. Sure, then there's the kid from Ontario who can
skate like the wind but "'e hain' got too many teef, an he hain' got
too many brain, but bygollyItellya, da kid, 'e sure noo how ta put da
puckindanet, eh!"

11.76 | | 7221::JHENDRY | John Hendry, DTN 297-2623 | Thu Feb 28 1991 08:33 | 27 |
| The first upset of tournament season took place last night and it was a
big one. Northeastern 6, Boston College 5. This overshadowed a 3 goal
performance by BC's David Emma and may have been Len Ceglarski's last
game as BC head coach (although they may still make the NCAAs but even
at that probably won't be at home).
Unlike the Beanpot semifinal, this wasn't the Tom Cole show. NU played
BC really tight and the shot difference was NU 24, BC 29. NU and BC
traded goals in the first period. BC took a 2-1 lead at 3:57 of the
2nd. NU then scored 3 goals in 3.5 minutes (including 2 goals in 21
seconds) for a 4-2 lead with 8 minutes to go, then BC tied it up with 2
late goals.
BC took a 5-4 lead 15 seconds into the 3rd period and then NU tied it
up halfway through. NU got the game winner at 11:16 and held on from
there, even surviving a tripping penalty on Rob Cowie with 55 seconds
left. NU was led by freshman Sebastien Laplante who had 2 goals.
NU's next game will be Friday night, March 8 in the Hockey East
semifinals at Boston Garden against the highest remaining seeded team.
The only way NU has a prayer of making the NCAAs is to win the
tournament. BC on the other hand will probably make the NCAAs, based
on its record of 27-10, but if they do, won't play again until Friday,
March 15. At that, they probably will have to go on the road for both
rounds of the tournament.

11.77 | Is BC the only school in town? | COGITO::HILL | | Thu Feb 28 1991 09:45 | 7 |
| What a great way to salvage a horrible season! I get pretty tired of how
the Boston media seems to fawn all over BC, as if it was the only
school in town. BU always comes second, and in the years when all 3 had
good hockey teams, this was obvious. Great to see BC get it's lunch
handed to them!
Tom
|
11.78 | | 7221::JHENDRY | John Hendry, DTN 297-2623 | Thu Feb 28 1991 10:17 | 13 |
| I can understand the media bias towards BC in both football and
basketball. They are, after all, the only NE school that plays
Division 1 football. They are, after all, in the Big East, which is
the premier basketball league in this part of the country, despite my
pro-Atlantic 10 bias.
I cannot understand why they dominate hockey coverage, however. BU, NU
and Harvard all play on the same level and should all be treated
equally. I can't help but think that if BC wins the national title,
they will get much better coverage and more notoreity than Harvard did
for winning it in 1989.
John
|
11.79 | Oooops! Next BC Home Game March 15th | DUSTER::TIRRELL | | Thu Feb 28 1991 10:54 | 30 |
| Can't add much to what John has said about the game. There will no
doubt be an element in this note that will claim that BC chocked. I
think that such a claim would only detract from what was certainly a
shocker and a superlative team effort by Northeastern. As a BC season
ticket holder for more than 20 years, the simple truth is that the best
team won last night, pure and simple. I wouldn't even begin to offer
any excuses, last night was no accident. I wish NU the best in the
upcoming Hockey Fest.
Look for BC to play at home on the 15th of March. Selection committee
officials were interviewed on the radio last night, and said that the
reseeding process will take place after the Hockey Fest tournament.
They will then hit the road for the quarter-final round, assuming they
survive.
Do not be surprised if BC is ranked third or fourth in the East. It is
quite possible that the three Hockey East teams will all be seeded
ahead of the ECAC tournament winner. The reason for this is the BC loss
last night. They can't be rated first or second, but they have beaten
all the top four ECAC teams. In fact they have only lost three games
out of Hockey East (2 to Michigan State, and RPI). This will count
heavily in the seeding. I make no comment on fairness, I'm only
repeating what was said on the radio.
Someone asked how Clarkson is rated below BU even though they beat BU.
The reason is strength of schedule out of their respective leagues.
BU's schedule is perceived to be harder. This will count more than I
thought.

Sounds like it was a good game. Really happy for the Huskies.
Perhaps this will serve BC better in the NCAA's, having been humbled by
the Huskies.
The best news for an Eagle fan has to be the retirement of Cementhaid.
I've said for years the guy was a horrible coach. BC will *always* get
great talent - the best from the Boston metro area. They just need a
coach who runs the team tighter, and gets more from the players.
They've been underachievers under Lenny, it's time for the Eagles to

| In Hockey East, everyone makes the playoffs. The first seed plays the
8th, 2nd seed plays 7th, 3rd seed plays 6th and 4th seed plays 5th.
The first playoff game was last night and NU knocked BC out of the
Hockey East playoffs. #6 Merrimack is at #3 BU tonight, #5 UNH is at
#4 Providence tomorrow and #7 Lowell is at #2 Maine Saturday. The 4
remaining teams play at Boston Garden next Friday night (March 8) in
the first night of HockeyFest. Hockey East is single elimination all
the way.
In the ECAC, the #11 and #12 teams (Army and Dartmouth) got bounced.
#10 Princeton lost to #7 Colgate and #9 Brown lost to #8 Yale. Friday
and Saturday, there are 2-game series (with a mini-game to decide the
winner) among the following matchups: #8 Yale at #1 Clarkson, #7
Colgate at #2 Cornell, #6 Vermont at #3 St Lawrence and #5 RPI at #4
Harvard. The 4 surviving teams play at Boston Garden on Saturday
night, March 9 in the second night of HockeyFest.
The 3rd night of HockeyFest (Sunday, March 10) has one of the title
games at 5PM and the other at 8PM.
In the WCHA and CCHA, both of which are 9-team leagues, the 9th place
team is eliminated and the first weekend is the basic 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7
and so forth. Their "Final Fours" are the same weekend as HockeyFest,
the CCHA in Detroit and WCHA in St Paul.
Then, the top 6 teams from each part of the country (one of which must
be an independent) are reseeded for the NCAA tournament. The top 2
teams in each region have a bye in the first round and won't play again
until the weekend of March 22-24. The quarterfinal rounds are the
weekend of March 15-17. The 6th place team in the West plays at the
3rd place team in the East, 5th in West at 4th East, 6th in East at 3rd
in West and 5th in East at 4th in West. Best 2/3 series instead of
single elimination. The survivors of these series play at the teams
with the first round byes during the weekend of March 22-24.
The 4 surviving teams get together in St Paul on Friday, March 29. The
2 survivors play on Easter Sunday, March 31, for the title.

Hawk,
I think you're confusing Clarkson with some other team. Clarkson
has always been one of the more dominant Division I hockey teams
in the East, even before the split. I doubt that Clarkson has
really even played Merrimack much, with the exception of one or
two early season warm-up games.
Anyways, I do understand that Hockey East plays a somewhat longer
and possibly tougher schedule, but I don't really believe that
they are that much superior to the ECAC overall (as post-season
records indicate).
Rather, I can accept a few of the previous arguments that no
one in the ECAC really dominated throughout the season this year
(Clarkson only won it on the last night through a tie), and that
the top three HE schools were all pretty tough. I don't get much
news about Hockey East here in VT, so it's hard for me to judge.

Sorry I haven't responded before now to your note about "Lenny". I
certainly cannot disagree with you at this point. I have in the past,
but I think it's time for Len to head on down the trail.. He is
unable to win the big game, not only at BC, but also when he was
at Clarkson. I don't think anyone would disagree at this point. He
admitted in the Globe the day after the game that, "...the team wasn't
ready to play". Well, enough said.
I don't want to take anything away from the Huskies that night. They
were far and away, the best team on the ice. They deserved to eliminate
BC, and they did. There were even a couple of questionable penalities
assessed to NU late in the game, which I think were better left
uncalled. Luckily, the game didn't turn on either call.
NU came within an eyelash of ousting Maine on Friday night. They lost
in OT, but again played very well. I think they are rebounding, and
should be back toward the top next year. I believe that Cole, given a
defense, and LaPlante could play anywhere.
Rumors about Lenny's retirement have been rampant all year. I hope he
does go, next year will be strictly rebuilding. It looks like BC will
loose the 8 seniors to graduation, and up to 6 underclassmen to the
olympic tryouts. It wouldn't bother me terribly.....new team, new
coach.
The NCAA bids are out late tonight. It ought to be facinating how they
rank the teams in the East. BC is in, but where will they play?
Tomorrow will tell

I didn't see any of the games, but was surprised NU beat BC, and played
so well against Maine. All in all, I'd rather have an NCAA bid, but
the Huskies just aren't that good.
Regarding Len - I've never like BC, but I know they've had great
talent. The team always seems to lack something - and I've always felt
they lacked coaching.
A change might do the program some good. Which is scary - since BC is
year-in, year-out, a top 10 team.
The bids and pairings for the NCAA's should be interesting.
Good luck to the Eagles, the Black Bears and the Terriers (will any
other Hockey East team make it? Does Providence have a chance??)

| My early guess on teams that are likely to make it:
Hockey East
I feel Maine, BU and BC are in with Providence a possibility.
ECAC
I feel Clarkson and St Lawrence are in with Cornell a possibility.
Harvard won't make it because their overall record is around .500
CCHA
Lake Superior and Michigan should make it. Either Western Michigan or
Ferris State might make. Ferris State had a better record (but not by
much) but Western won the consolation game.
WCHA
Minnesota and Northern Michigan should make it. Wisconsin will
probably make it even if they lose the consolation game to North Dakota
this afternoon. North Dakota might make it if they beat the Badgers.
(should have said above - BU, Clarkson and Lake Superior are in)
I can think of 9 teams that either are in or are very likely: Maine,
BU, BC, Clarkson, St Lawrence, Lake Superior, Michigan, Minnesota and
Northern Michigan. Providence, Cornell, Ferris State, Western
Michigan, Wisconsin and North Dakota are all possibilities. One
Division 1 independent must also be picked but I don't know who that
will be. So in effect there seems to be 6 teams vying for 2 spots and
I'll predict those slots will go to Providence and Wisconsin.
BU, Clarkson, Lake Superior and tonight's WCHA winner will likely have
the bye next week and host a quarterfinal. BC, Maine, Michigan and the
WCHA runner up will likely host first round games next week.
Providence, Wisconsin, St Lawrence and the independent being on the
road in the first round.
Talk about going out on a limb!

| I was slightly wrong but not by much. Cornell made it over St Lawrence
which I can't quite understand since the Saints beat Cornell is the
semis and were only a point or two behind Cornell in the regular
season. Also, Maine got the first round bye over Clarkson and I can
understand that since the top 3 teams in Hockey East were stronger than
the ECAC top teams.
The seedings are as follows:
East: 1. Maine 2. Boston University 3. Boston College
4. Clarkson 5. Providence 6. Cornell
West: 1. Lake Superior State 2. Northern Michigan 3. Michigan
4. Minnesota 5. Wisconsin 6. Alaska-Anchorage

Cornell at Michigan
Providence at Minnesota

As the top ECAC team (both regular season AND tournament), I feel
that Clarkson deserved an automatic bye. I wouldn't argue with
the fact that Maine and BU were stronger teams, but it gets pretty
subjective after that.
And to seed Providence ahead of Cornell is absurd in my opinion.
I think the NCAAs need a less subjective system of seeding.

| The Hockey East schools (at least as far down as even UNH) did an
outstanding job against their non-league schedules, most of which was
made up of ECAC opponents and the rest made up of WCHA and CCHA
opponents. In comparison, the ECAC's non-league schedules tended to be
weaker, there were fewer non-league games *AND* the non-league results
tended to be poorer than those of the Hockey East schools. I believe
this holds true if you compare Maine, BU, BC, Providence and even UNH
to Clarkson, Cornell, St Lawrence, Harvard and RPI.
While it's probably not fair to the ECAC schools I can't argue with it
very much and I can be objective because I didn't go to any of them.
In fairness, too, the ECAC has brought it on themselves, because
they're the ones who wanted to play fewer games than the NCAA allows
which is a big reason Hockey East was formed in the first place.

| Re: Clarkson
They're lucky they won the tournament, otherwise they'd be shovelling
snow. They beat BU, just barely, after blowing a huge lead. Again, they
came to friendly Conte, and were blown out. 3 late third period goals
made it respectable (8-5), but they were a no-show. Point in fact, the
Easts top three teams are seeded exactly right. Maine and BU both
deserve the bye, and BC, well Clarkson didn't show. Keep in mind BC
played the second toughest schedule in 1-A this year, only Michigan
State and RPI and the HEA brethren beat them.
In fairness to the ECAC, this was not a banner year.
JD:
I have to agree. Coaching is what BC lacks, especially in the games
that count. Clarkson lacked the same thing when Lenny was there. I
think history is repeating itself. We'll see if changes are made.
I think Maine and BU are in good shape for the tournament. Maine almost
never looses at home, and BU should be OK, but they've had their
troubles at home. The series is a three game affair which will help.
BC should be OK with Alaska Ankorage. They will have been off for 16
days, so Friday should be an adventure. It wouldn't surprise me if it
takes them three games. Assuming BC can win, the Northern Michigan-BC
series will be a good one. They haven't played this year, but in the
past BC has done well. It will be out there, so we'll see. The BC
defense has been on spring break since the BU Beanpot game.
In general, I think the BU win in the tournament made it easy for the
selection committee. Had they lost, it would not have surprised me if
BC would have had the bye, having beaten BU 3 out of 4 this year. I
don't think this would have been fair, but I could see it happening.
Justice prevailed, and BU has the bye. I think they are playing better
at the moment anyway.
I will stand by what I've said all along....the upset of the year...

No arugument that the non-league games of Hockey East schools are
probably tougher and more numerous than those of ECAC teams.
To generalize, though, that just because overall HE schools play
a tougher schedule than ECAC teams is not fair.
What I haven't seen is results of head-to-head play overall.
If the top four Hockey East Schools so clearly dominated games
against the top four ECAC teams, then I'll concede that the
seedings are correct. It's just not fair to generalize.
>> In fairness, too, the ECAC has brought it on themselves, because
>> they're the ones who wanted to play fewer games than the NCAA allows

I don't believe that's quite how it came about, if I remember
correctly. There were certain teams in the ECAC that wanted to
play MORE games than the ECAC allowed. Subtle difference, but
it means they didn't bring it on themselves, it was certain schools
that wanted to put more emphasis on hockey.
Overall, since the split, I'd bet if you looked at head-to-head
standings, performance in the NCAA's, and number of players that
go on to play pro hockey, you'd find the two leagues a lot more even
than you'd think.

| You're right, I don't have the head-to-head records and the schedules
in front of me so I shouldn't generalize the way I did. The fact still
remains however - because of playing more games and a generally
stronger non-league schedule, Hockey East is *PERCEIVED* to be a
stronger league than the ECAC in the regular season. I don't know
how this correlates with 2 Hobey Baker winners (Scott Fusco and Lane
MacDonald, because Mark Fusco won the Baker before the split) since the
split nor do I know how this correlates with 2 national titles and 3
other final game appearances since the split for the ECAC vs only one
final game appearance (and no title) for Hockey East.
I believe the following based on what I've seen:
1. The ECAC has to have a truly super team to be perceived by the
tournament committee as being stronger than its corresponding Hockey
East school. Right or wrong, that's the way it is.
2. The ECAC teams may well be underrated when they get to the
tournament.
3. I believe this year's ratings with Clarkson being seeded 4th in the
East and Cornell 6th are indeed correct.
4. You may be right about the reasoning about who caused whom to jump
and form Hockey East but I believe the game limitation, whether
pre-existing or newly proposed at the time, was the reason.
5. I don't really care about which league is stronger since I didn't
go to any of the schools and don't care passionately about any single
one of them, except for hoping for BC to lose. I just want to see good
hockey.

I can't say one way or another whether Providence belongs in the
tournament seeding where they are or not. I will say that based on the
regular season record, both in and out of HEA, BC is exactly where they
ought to be. BC's 1990-1991 record against ECAC teams is as follows:
11/2 BC 5 - Vermont 1
11/23 BC 2 - Harvard 1
11/25 RPI 5 - BC 4
1/11 BC 5 - St. Lawrence 0
1/12 BC 8 - Clarkson 5
1/22 BC 8 - Dartmouth 2
1/29 BC 5 - Cornell 4
BC beat everybody who showed up in the Garden for the ECAC tournament,
including the two teams that played for the championship. They beat
both of them by a combined goal total of 8.
BC's out of League Games included:
11/16 Michigan State 4 - BC 2
11/17 BC 5 - Michigan State 4
12/2 BC 5 - Michigan 1
12/20 BC 3 - Minnesota 2
12/21 Michigan State 3 - BC 2
RE: Providence
Yes, BC lost to Providence in February. They also beat them in November
and December. The series is as follows:
11/27 BC 8 - Providence 7
12/4 BC 5 - Providence 1
2/20 Providence 3 - BC 2
RE: BU
Yes, BC lost the Beanpot. They also played BU four times during the
regular season, and beat them three. The series is as follows:
11/11 BC 3 - BU 2
1/18 BC 5 - BU 2
2/11 BU 8 - BC 4
2/23 BC 6 - BU 5
RE: Maine
Yes, BC lost to Maine in January. They also played three times and beat
them twice. The series is as follows:
12/15 BC 6 - Maine 5
1/15 Maine 6 - BC 5
1/20 BC 5 - Maine 4
National Poll:
BC has been sitting at the #3 position in the polls all year. They
trail Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State. Maine has been sitting
in the #4/5 position all year swapping places with Minnesota. BU has
been sitting around #6/7 all year. The same cannot be said for ANY of
the ECAC teams.
RE: BC-Northeastern
Yes, BC lost. They ran into a hornets nest on February 27th with
Northeastern when they lost in the HEA quarter-finals 6-5. Northeastern
would have beaten anybody that night including Lake Superior,
Northern Michigan, Maine, BU and anybody that the ECAC cared to have
them play. Point in fact, they beat the East's #1 team. I was there,
and believe me, it was no mistake. I'm no fan of Northeastern (or Maine
for that matter), but appreciate great performances, and I witnessed
one by the Huskies. It was one of the three most shocking defeats that
I've seen BC have in the 22+ years, I've been a BC season ticket holder.
I'm glad the committee didn't hold it against BC. They certainly could
have, had the ECAC been stronger, but they aren't.
Past history is irrelevant. This year in head-to-head competition BC is
6-1 against ECAC teams (2-0 against the ECAC entrants), and 7-3 against
the other three HEA entrants.
Bottom Line:
Justice was served. Clarkson is where they deserve to be. Had they not
won the tournament, they'd be done for the season.
The facts speak for themselves.

Ok, my last comments on the matter, and then I'll leave it alone.
I do (and have agreed that top to bottom, Hockey East is a stronger
league than the ECAC).
I agree with the following points:
> 1. The ECAC has to have a truly super team to be perceived by the
> tournament committee as being stronger than its corresponding Hockey
> East school. Right or wrong, that's the way it is.
> 2. The ECAC teams may well be underrated when they get to the

> 4. You may be right about the reasoning about who caused whom to jump

> pre-existing or newly proposed at the time, was the reason.
I don't agree with the following:
> 3. I believe this year's ratings with Clarkson being seeded 4th in the
> East and Cornell 6th are indeed correct.
As I said in an earlier note, I think any team that wins the regular
season and wins the tournament, should get an automatic bye. Period.
No other factors considered.
> 5. I don't really care about which league is stronger since I didn't
> go to any of the schools and don't care passionately about any single
> one of them, except for hoping for BC to lose. I just want to see good
> hockey.
It may be obvious by now, but I am a Clarkson alumni (pre-split days).
I'm just happy that Clarkson has finally won the ECAC championship
after all those dry years. They have been one of the best regular
season teams in the league consistently, year-after-year, but
could never seem to put it together in the playoffs.
> I can't say one way or another whether Providence belongs in the
> tournament seeding where they are or not. I will say that based on the
> regular season record, both in and out of HEA, BC is exactly where they

> 11/23 BC 2 - Harvard 1
> 11/25 RPI 5 - BC 4
> 1/11 BC 5 - St. Lawrence 0
> 1/12 BC 8 - Clarkson 5
> 1/22 BC 8 - Dartmouth 2
> 1/29 BC 5 - Cornell 4
Maybe, then, the issue is that BC should be seeded ahead of BU.
It seems to me that the same problem existed in Hockey East this
year that you seem to indicate happened in the ECAC: no team
could consistently come to the forefront and dominate.
> Bottom Line:
> Justice was served. Clarkson is where they deserve to be. Had they not
> won the tournament, they'd be done for the season.
No way! The only way you could make this argument would have been
if Cornell had been in the finals and lost, and Clarkson hadn't
made it. Even so, then you have to consider the possibility that
Clarkson, Cornell, and St Lawrence (probably) would have all been
in and Providence out.
Anyways, I think BOTH eastern leagues have a ways to go before
they can catch the West, who I think will dominate the NCAA's this
year (no, I don't expect Clarkson to do all that well, but I'd
like to see them get by Wisconsin this weekend).
BTW, when did Scott Fusco graduate? I thought it was after the split?

| Mark Fusco graduated in 1983 (before the split) and then played in the
1984 Olympics. Scott Fusco graduated in 1986, having taken a year off
to play in the 1984 Olympics during his career. Lane MacDonald graduated in
1989 and he also took a year off, to play in the 1988 Olympics. All 3
won the Hobey Baker Award and all 3 years, Harvard played for the
National Title.
Gary, I see what you're saying about the champion of each league
getting an automatic bye past the first round, but the NCAA has always
stated that the top 2 teams in each geographic region get the bye, not
the champions of each league. While I agree this may have been unfair
to Clarkson this year, I think it's a fairer system overall.

I have no problem with BU getting a bye. Five of the BU losses during
the year were to Maine and BC. Point in fact, had they not won the
tournament, I think BC would have had the bye. Clarkson didn't have a
chance.
BC led HEA, during the regular season, almost wire to wire. Maine took
over a couple of times because they had a game in hand. I have no
problems with the seedings.
The NCAA takes a look at the teams, assumes who is the strongest, and
seeds them accordingly. I'm sorry, if the best that the ECAC has to
offer is considered a fourth place seed. I saw a lot of the ECAC teams
this year, and it was not a banner year. I don't care who won the
bloody tournament.
Two other points to ponder: Harvard (4th ECAC seed, and 3-2 loser to
Clarkson in the ECAC semi-final game) was blown out in the Beanpot
Consolation game by the HEA's 8th place team.... Northeastern 5-0.
BU also took less than 12 minutes the week before to blow out Harvard
in the Beanpot opening round. It was not a bumper crop of ECAC teams.
Clarkson, SLU, and RPI all could have joined HEA, when HEA was formed.
They chose not to join. Whether it would have helped their programs in
the long term, who knows. One thing is for certain though, the NCAA
selection committee, isn't impressed with the offerings from the ECAC
this year.
Hey, if they are as good as people claim they are, they'll win this
weekend. Few mistakes, are made in a best 2 out of 3 series. If they
loose, that about says it all.

Clarkson, SLU and RPI are kind of enigma's. They still offer
scholarships, unlike the rest of the ECAC schools, but yet
chose NOT to join Hockey East because they felt that they
were still academic institutions first, and sports schools
second. I admire their stance. UVM falls into that category,
also, but have not yet developed an outstanding program.
I have no doubt that all three, were they to join Hockey East,
would be top-notch competitors in that league as well.
This debate is very similar to that raging in a later note in this
file on the NCAA basketball tournament.
I, personally, think that the NCAA places too much emphasis
on big-time schools from big-time conferences. After all, this
is NOT the pros.
I said that I don't expect Clarkson to fair that well in the
NCAA's (although I can always hope). That doesn't mean that they
don't deserve to be there. They won their league, and their
league's post-season tournament. All four leagues are capable
of play at the level of each other, although some leagues and
teams are perenially stronger than others. So what? I think
they all still deserve an equal chance at post-season play.

I can't disagree with anything you said in your last reply. Point in

Eastern team. Don't get me wrong, they belong in the tournament. Of all
the ECAC teams I saw this year, they were the only ones that showed any
life at all. I think the top three HEA teams are stronger this year,
but this is certainly not the case every year. BC lost at Clarkson
last year, even though they were the HEA champions, so things change.
We'll see, for all the chest pounding done, after the Northeastern

| Alaska Anchorage ousted BC over the weekend.
Firday Night:
BC played well enough to win, but two third period goals by the
Seawolves (BC's defense, especially goaltender Scott LeGrand) were out at
the Hot Dog stand. BC outshot Alaska by nearly two to one, but a
furious rally late in the third period fell short.
Saturday Night:
Three power plays goals, two with a two man advantage, were all the
Seawolves needed to put BC out of its misery. BC was flat, and mounted
little in the way of offense. Second period penalities killed BC as
they played nearly the entire second period short handed.
BC closes out the season at 27-12, having gone 3-5 down the stretch.
There is no speculation as to whether this was the last game for coach
Len Ceglarski who is rumored to be entertaining thoughts of retirement.
If he does retire, there will be no shortage of candidates for the job.

| The Boston Globe confirmed in yesterday's paper what I had heard
before the BC game on Saturday night. There will be a meeting between
the new BC AD and Lenny "We'll win, as long as it doesn't count"
Ceglarski on Wednesday March 20th. The subject is the future direction
of BC hockey. Ceglarski has two years left on his current contract.
With 8 seniors graduating and another 4 or 5 under-classmen leaving
for Olympic tryouts, the team is clearly heading for a rebuilding year
of massive proportions. The timing might be right to make a change, by
allowing a new coach to develop a new system which will take them into
the 90's.
We'll see.
It might be time to "warm up the bus".

to professional hockey games; permitting players to use the office
telephone for free long distance calls; and the offering of cash in the
locker room to players. The cash, approximately $200, apparently was
offered between periods of a November 22, 1986 game against BU at Tully
Forum in Billerica. The incident became 'team folklore' according to
the report and the 3-2 Lowell win stands as their only win ever over
BU. Also the report said Riley 'failed to deport himself in accordance
with the generally recognized high standards normally associated with
the conduct and administration of intercollegiate athletics' and showed
'a knowing and willful effort on his part to conduct the university's
ice hockey program contrary to NCAA legislation.'"
Apparently the parents of some of the players involved turned the
school in to the NCAA. The Chiefs have received 2 years probation and
have been banned from the 1992 NCAA tournament. It's unclear whether
they've (or will be) banned from the 1992 Hockey East tournament.
"Riley made himself familiar with the current rules of ice hockey but
not the current rules governing recruiting and extra benefits. A theme
of ignorance of the rules, ignoring the rules and a disdain for seeking
information about the rules by the head coach was evident throughout

Riley has always been a scum. He was possibly the worst ice hockey
referee of all time, and he was a real low-life coach. Rumours of
'cheating' at Lowell have been around for at least a decade. This
doesn't surprise me at all, and I'm sure it is only the tip of the
iceberg. If they ever look at grades, I'd bet they'd find some
creative grading systems used in the past.
ULowell had some great teams in Division 2 with Riley at the helm. Too

I'd say the players shouldn't be in the coach's apartments, period.
Reduced rent amounts to cash payments, and not by some booster, but
directly from the coach. Free vacation time on the yacht, again
coming directly from the coach with his complete knowledge, is
serious, too. I won't even comment on waving money in front of
players' faces as motivation, if that's really true...
The NCAA said that ULowell would have gotten *worse* if they hadn't
initiated the investigation, turned themselves in, and let Riley go.
I think they're fortunate that they got the punishment they did.
> Another perspective- put it against UNLV's [alleged] violations...
That depends on whether you're referring to the NCAA's allegations of
illegal recruiting (free hotels, trips, phone calls, etc.) or MrT's
allegations of free cars, businesses, and tax evasion. What the NCAA
had on Lowell sounds worse than anything I've heard them reveal they
have on UNLV (but I'll admit that it's not over there yet either...)

| The games this weekend should be great.
I have not seen Northern Michigan, but have seen the other three. Well,
that's probably not true...I clearly didn't see the REAL Clarkson team
;-)!!
I think Maine will beat Northern Michigan. They've been to the final 4
3 of the last 4 years. They're real good, and experience will work in
their favor. I also think they are hungry.
Clarkson-BU is hard to figure. BU is rolling up some impressive scores,
but it is unclear still which BU team will show up, and if the Terriers can
keep it up. There are those that will say that they are a money team at
playoff time, but I'd argue that the BU rise has been on the strength
of playing at the Boston Garden, and at home in Walter Brown. Had
Jean-Yves Roy not missed the open net in the dying moments of the
HEA Championship game, all this could have been different. I don't
believe that BU is as strong away from home.
Clarkson ousted LSSU who had been on the top of the polls for the last
three months. They took a 4-2 second period lead, and held off LSSU for
13+ minutes in the third period while being out shot 21-6. That is some
impressive defense in anyones league. They'll need it again Thursday,
as BU croaked Michigan (and Maine for that matter) with a blizzard of
break-away goals.
I think it'll be a one goal affair, and it wouldn't surprise me if
Clarkson pulls it off. They won at Walter Brown. They know how to win
on the road. They'll have a friendly crowd, as the thousands
of Maine fans will no doubt support Clarkson. I think they have a great
chance.
We'll see.....As much as I don't appreciate Generalisimo Walsh's
antics, I wouldn't be upset or surprised if Maine wins it all.
We'll know Friday.....

most consistent. Hmm
I'm gonna take BU to edge Clarkson because I think they have better
overall talent. Jerry, you do raise a good point about BU on the

I know nothing about Northern Michigan so I'll take Maine on the

Clarkson has a long history of unpredictability. The games I've seen
this year have done nothing to change this opinion.
Their strengths are in 1) Defense 2) Power play percentage (excellent)
and 3) Goaltending. Skating at full strength, their offense is
average at best. As good as their defense looks, they seem to be
susceptable to lapses leading to breakaways.
I didn't expect them to make it to the semi's. I have absolutely

| Watched the 3rd period of the Maine game and all of the BU game.
Maine - NMU was back and forth. Tied 1-1 after 1, Maine took an early
2-1 lead in the second period and NMU had a 3-2 lead after 2. Maine
tied it midway through the 3rd and then NMU really put the pressure on
and scored the game winner with less than 4 minutes left. NMU will be
a tough foe for BU. Each team lost a key player to injury. Maine's
Jean-Yves Roy had all 3 goals for the Black Bears.
In last night's BU game, Clarkson took a 1-0 in the first 30 seconds of
the game and then BU scored 5 goals before the first period was over.
Tony Amonte had 3 of them. BU pretty much put it in cruise control the
rest of the way. There was only one penalty on each team until there
were 2 minutes left, so it was an incredibly clean game and Clarkson,
to their credit, didn't goon it up like Colgate did against Wisconsin
in the title game last year. The lack of penalties hurt Clarkson
because the power play was supposedly their strength and BU scored a
shorthanded goal on Clarkson's first period power play.
If both teams play tomorrow the way they played yesterday, the title
game will be a classic.
In other hockey news, NU coach Don McKenney resigned after 2 years at
the helm. Next year's Final Four will be held at the Knickerbocker
Arena in Albany, NY. Now *THAT* would be one hell of a Noter's Road
Trip.

Look for the total playoff system to change in the next year or so. HEA
officials interviewed between the second and third periods last night
said the NC2A (as the "Shark" calls them) is looking into a 16 team, 4
regional site, single game elimination format. If this sound like the
basketball format, it is. It wouldn't surprise me if they clone it. The
current system lacks consistency, and fairness, and the NC2A wants it
changed. This format would also shorten the season by one week, which
should make the college presidents happy.

Re: BU-Clarkson Game
Too bad Clarkson forgot to come out for the first period. That
wasn't the team I've seen play most of the year. I wasn't sure
that they'd beat BU, but I expected a close, exciting game.
A lot of credit to BU, who played excellent hockey. They kept
Clarkson outside all night. There was never much action in
front of the net. Clarkson was clearly capable of playing a lot
better than they did, also. If you had a chance to see their
meaningless powerplay at the end of the game, that was more
typical of the level they played at most of the year.
Well, I'm still impressed with their making it to the semi-finals.
RE: BU-NMU
I didn't get to see the first game yesterday, but based on everything
I've heard and read about NMU, it should be a great game. Did I
hear correctly that NMU hasn't lost since Dec 7? Something like
20-0-2 since then?
Re: NCAA changes
The final four in Albany would be great. I know the ECAC is interested
is holding their post season tourney there, now that there's only
one Boston area school in the ECAC.
I saw there were some other changes being proposed, also, that seemed
like they would do more to equalize the four Division I schools.
Things like limitations on number of games, and scholarship limitations.
I don't remember all the details.
I like the idea of a 16 team post season tourney, also.

The Maine goalie (Dunham, Garth Snow didn't play which I'm sure will

of the NMU goals were power play jobs. Maine was something like 0-5 or 1-5
on the power play. NMU was something like 2-4. The game winner came at
the 16:47 mark of the third period. The 5th NMU goal was an open net job.
Jean-Yves Roy accounted for all 3 Maine goals.

is the best-of-three format. To play well enough to get to the

right.

much left over for B.U. and the other Hockey East Schools.
Emma of Boston College was voted the top player of
College Hockey's regular season. He received the Hobey Baker award.

That was a great comeback by the Terrier's! Northern Michigan really
took it to them in the second period after falling behind 3-0.
How about that stop by Pye with 1 second left in regulation, I think

Tremendous victory for the Wildcats. Words cannot express how sweet
that 8th Northern Michigan goal was! Time stood still as that wrist

Re: Hobey Baker
Was somewhat surprised that David Emma got it. I thought he had it in
the bag during the regular season, but I thought that BC's atrocious
playoff performance might have hurt him. He, along with the rest of the
HEM line, was basically a no-show during the Alaska-Anchorage series.
Re: BC Recruiting
Yes, they seem to have had a good class. Next year they'll skate a lot
of freshmen leading one to believe that next year will be an adventure
to watch (aka .500 at best). The kids that they have already signed
have all indicated that they chose BC because they can play next year.
They won't have to sit around and wait. Should be interesting. The
April signing period is coming up. BC has indicated that they expect
four or five more kids to sign rounding out the needs for next year.
Interesting season all around. Next year should produce a new playoff
format, some surprises, and a lot of speculation as to whom will be the
new BC coach for 1992-93.
Later....

11.159 | all kindsa thoughts ... | BUNDY::LONG | | Mon Apr 01 1991 12:04 | 49 |

Tons of random thoughts ...
NMU was the better team Saturday night. They deserved to win. The
game was very exciting, but a rather sloppy game in my opinion. Lots
of lapses and breakdowns by both teams at both ends of the ice.
The Hobey Baker award is based on regular season performance only. I
believe David Emma was in fact the best choice.
The NCAA tournament has the format the way it currently is for a number
of reasons. The biggest one right now is the "Merrimack" rule. That
is, an independent is required to receive a bid to the tournament.
This format began with the 87-88 season, after Merrimack had another
outstanding year in 86-87. That's when the tournament went from 8 to
12 teams. The deal was agreed to on a 4 year basis - with the thinking
that all else being equal (which, of course, it wasn't ...) each
conference would have only 2 representatives in the tournament for one
year.
The best of three format evolved from trying to find a way from keeping
the best teams from getting bounced from the tournament too early.
After all, don't you want your best teams playing for the national
title? Anyway, the 2 game total goals series was the initial cut at
this, and the best of 3 was the result. Once you get to the final
four, you've got your four best teams, so the theory goes. So, go
ahead and play one game.
Revenue also plays a factor. I believe this tournament sold out,
right? If so, then the last one not to sell out was 88 in Lake Placid.
Bringing teams together for a four team single elimination setup is
usually more expensive than a few weekend series. However, in the last
few years, the interest in and popularity of the tournament has risen
dramatically. The NCAA would realize a decent profit from a 2 week, 16
team, single elimination format now. That would not have been the case
4-5 years ago when the current format was laid out.
I'd heard talk of the 16 team format starting in Lake Placid in 88.
With the revenue there, and the "deal" on the current format having
"expired", it will be very surprising if this new format is *not*
instituted for next year.
more on Len Ceglarski, BC, Hockey East, and maybe even on Jack Parker,
in a later note ...

| Great game !! I was having a hard time staying awake, but was
determined not to find out about the outcome in the paper. NMU is
a very good team ..... they came back from 3 goals down in the NCAA
Championship game, enough said. Great season for the Terriers, from
the Beanpot on they played their best hockey of the season ..... the
way to go in any sport ..... be hot late.
Congratulations to David Emma for the Hobey Baker award. A fine
individual achievement ..... the award is much like the Heisman in that
there's loads of PR involved before/during the season. Unfortunately,
I can't think of any HB winner who's made it big in the NHL .... both
Fusco brothers from Harvard won ..... and Lane MacDonald .... at least
recently. Who's the most successful College player in the pro's this
year ...... John Cullen (BU) ...... who have had great success over the
past years ...... Joe Mullen (BC) and Dave Taylor (Clarkson) .....
Interesting East All-American team ..... Tony Amonte didn't make either
first or second team. Every game I saw this year he was the best
player on the ice .......
Re: BU Recruiting ....... don't be too concerned. They have a very
deep club, which will provide a strong nucleus even with the player
defections; and the EMASS player of the year from CM has already
committed. My guess is that several uncommitted players watched the
NCAA's will go to BU as a result ...... national exposure is a great
recruiting tool.

Wally, Boston College has the same color scheme as your beloved

It was a tremendous game and I sure hoping for BU to win. I give both

Overtimes never switch ends of ice, although I think they should after
each 10 minutes. Tom Mees, Wally Shaver, and Jim Rich didn't really
seem to understand too much about NCAA OT procedures. Tom Mees
definitely mis-called a *lot* of names ... but those of us who care
could usually tell who he meant to call anyway.
That 3OT goal looked like a terrible defensive breakdown on BU's part
to me. I saw Scott Cashman going down to his left, a BU defensemen
down on Cashman's left, an NMU forward down in that pile, and two NMU
forwards all alone about 10 feet out. (I do intend to go back and
check the videotape ... at first I thought Cashman was already down
when the shot got taken ...) Anyway, that's the kind of defensive
mistake that loses hockey games.
I think a stronger, more consistent defensive team would have matched
up against NMU better than BU did. BC, *if* it cared to play, comes to
mind ...
Hobey Baker winners and the NHL ... Lane McDonald suffered a head
injury as a high school junior in a football game. Continuing to play
hockey was a real risk for him. He opted not to join the Whalers farm
system ... can you just see the AHL goons getting in line to take a
shot at the Olympian/NCAA MVP/Hobey Baker winner ????? Instead, he
chose to play in West Germany, but "hung 'em up" after 1/2 season. He
felt the risk of injury was just too great.
Next year's tournament is at the Knick. You can probably count on it
being there every 3 years or so at least until there's another suitable
arena in the east. Lake Placid is nowhere near big enough anymore.
I'm working on tickets now ... past tournaments have sold out a few
months in advance (except, probably, for allocations to participating
schools). I'll post whatever info I find.
One last thing. Did anyone get the All-America teams? I heard them
talk about it on ESPN, but I never saw a newspaper this weekend. Any
chance one of you out there could post it? Thanks.

| Yes, the overtimes do switch. They played 10 minutes, took a 2 minute
break, switched ends and played 10 more. Then the ice was resurfaced
and then they played the final fatal 1:57.
On the play where the goal was scored, 2 BU defenders followed the puck
carrier to Cashman's left leaving the NMU player uncovered in front.
Cashman was so far to the side that it looked like there was no way he
could have gotten back in time. Clearly, Cashman had no chance on the
play because he defense let him down. Pulling Bradley and putting
Cashman in after NMU scored its fifth goal was the move that kept BU in
it for so long.
I don't have the paper in which the A-A teams were announced but there
is no one single A-A team in hockey - there's a Western team and an
Eastern team but I don't know why. Also from looking at the list I
can't remember a single Hobey Baker winner who has made it big in the
pros. That doesn't indicate a failure of the award though. Like the
Heisman, it's supposed to be for the outstanding college player, not
the best future pro.
The NCAA tournament in hockey only does well at the gate if there is a
local school competing. It didn't sell out in St Paul this year
because the University of Minnesota wasn't there. It doesn't sell out
in Detroit unless either Michigan or Michigan State is there. I doubt
it will sell out the Knick unless RPI is there, because they're the
only school nearby who has a big enough local following to draw a lot
of people. I'm sure Clarkson, St Lawrence, Cornell, Colgate and Union
wouldn't draw as many fans combined as RPI would. I think the Knick is
a great location for the East, far better than Lake Placid and probably
better than Providence. It would be a better place for the ECAC to
hold its tournament than Boston Garden is.

| Actually the team that matched up the best with NMU was Maine. I think
that Thursday afternoon the only thing lacking was the proper Maine
goalie. Dunham was burned for three goals after he left the rebounds.
Garth Snow doesn't tend to leave as many. Unfortunately, with Walsh's
rotation, it was Dunham's turn to play. Someone forgot to tell Shawn
that there was no tomorrow if Maine lost.
I can't agree that the BC defense was up to the task of holding NMU.
BC coughed up buckets of goals to Lowell, Northeastern, BU, and
Alaska-Anchorage. BC's defense can best be described as "no-shows"
from the end of January on. They clearly got worse as time went on.
Ultimately their lack of defense crippled their offense, and turned
both Galluppo and LeGrand into "ducks in a shooting gallery".
Of the teams I saw this year from the East (plus Alaska Anchorage)
I'd take:
Goalies: Maine, Alaska-Anchorage, Northeastern
Defense: Maine, BU, Clarkson
Forwards/Centers: BC, Maine, BU
Enforcers: Rosenblatt (Merrimack), Guerin (BC), Rossi (Northeastern)
Coaches: BU, Maine, Merrimack
I'd take on anybody with this team.

You're right about the OT and switching ends ... I was probably
thinking that teams start out at the same ends they finished regulation
at ... but I need to check that out, now.
True, the Gophers are the draw in St. Paul, as are the Spartans in
Detroit. However, the 89 and 90 tournaments sold out long before
conference playoffs started ... in anticipation of the "home" teams
being in the tournament. That says that if RPI gets off to a hot
start next year, be sure to get your tix by November :-)/2
I wanna go back to my sources now and find out how quickly the 89 and
90 tournaments became sellouts ... and see how Minn and Mich St started

| Boy - NU is really in the dumps. Many NU alums and fans thought the
return of the dreaded past would come when Ferni Flaman retired.
NU has always had trouble recruiting - as most of the Mass prep stars
want to go to BC. Harvard and BU do a good job picking up any
leftovers (Actually Harvard gets the real smart guys...). New
Hampshire seems to have made a nice comeback - and Maine is tough.
NU's best recruiting areas have always been outside of Toronto - where
Fernie was something of a legend. With him gone, that pipeline might
be gone - leaving NU to pick from the dregs of New England and to go
further down the Canadien depth chart.
Oh well...if they really suck, they have a chance to win the Beanpot!

| In recent tournaments, Maine won the Great Western Freezeout over
Michigan State, Calgary and Waterloo. Minnesota won its own Mariucci
Tournament over Bowling Green, Boston College and Providence. The RPI
Invitational is thised weekend with RPI, Union, St Lawrence and
Northeastern. The Auld Lang Syne Tournament is also thised weekend
with host Dartmouth, Boston University, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Finally, the Codfish Bowl is thised weekend at UMass-Boston with North
Adams State, St. Anselm and Salem State. I would imagine the Syracuse
Tournament, the New Haven Tournament and the Anchorage Jeep-Nissan
Tournament are also coming up soon.
All these of course pale in comparison to the Beanpot, held on the
first 2 Mondays in February at Boston Garden.

The Huskies are playing like they did in the seventies - when I first
got there. Absolutely horrible. Like I mentioned prior to the season
- the loss of Fernie Flaman as a recruiting tool has hurt this squad.
They were on the tube out here last week vs. Boston University. They
just are not talented.

| Union is in Schenectady, right down the road from RPI, which is in
Troy. In football, they battle each year for the Dutchmen's Shoes,
which is sort of the Capital District equivalent of Floyd of Rosedale
(the prize for the winner of the Minnesota - Iowa game).
RPI also battles WPI in football for the Transit Trophy.

Hockey East if I remember correctly. So, they are showing some
improvement. Also they are playing with a young team. So next
season they could be very competative in the league.

| UMass-Lowell beat Yale last week, beat Merrimack and tied Boston
College. They got off to a great start, taking some teams by surprise
but have since reached their proper level, at or slightly below .500.
I think the team is better off with Bruce Crowder as head coach and
will improve over the nexted few years.

Yeah, Denny, I heard that. Eddie Anvilhaid has two of his
three sons @ UNION now, of course on his salary he can afford it!
Given that salary, he should be able to afford hot dogs for
all the UNION fans at tomorrow's game! [hold the mustard!]
Here's hoping for a competitive game, maybe Hahvahd will
be looking ahead to the Beanpot opener on Monday night!

| Ah, yes, the Beanpot. Boston's own unique mid-winter sporting
tradition. For all you southerners who don't speak hockey, remember
the Big Four tournament every year? Consider putting those 4 schools
in the same city and consider having them play each year on the first
and second Mondays in February.
This year in the opener we have Northeastern facing off against Boston
College at 6, in BC coach Len Ceglarski's final Beanpot and in the
nightcap, Boston University vs Harvard (if the pairings from the Globe
today were accurate).
The two most legendary Beanpots took place within 2 years of each
other. The first round in 1978 took place on the night when the Great
Blizzard of 1978 started. 12,000 people showed up. Most of them were
still there 3 days later. The final round was played almost a month
later. In 1980, Northeastern, which had never won and had only made
the finals 2 or 3 previous times in its history, beat Boston University
and Boston College (both games in overtime) to win its first 'Pot.
There is nothing like it. Go anybody but BC!

11.260 | Anyone want to go to Providence? | FSOA::JHENDRY | John Hendry, DTN 297-2623 | Mon Mar 16 1992 09:42 | 25 |
| Still no news this morning on the WCHA final results but I would like
to give my predictions for the NCAA tournament participants:
Hockey East: Maine, New Hampshire, Providence, Boston University
ECAC: St Lawrence
CCHA: Michigan, Michigan State, Lake Superior
WCHA: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northern Michigan
Independent: Alaska-Anchorage
Rationale: I don't think Cornell's overall record is good enough to
get them in despite their making it to the ECAC title game. BU and
Providence both have overall records good enough to overcome their
lack of success in the playoffs. I think either Clarkson or Harvard
would have needed to have made the championship game in order to have a
shot to get in.
The first round of the playoffs will be held in 2 sites - Detroit and
Providence - over the weekend of March 26-29. In Providence, the 3-6
seeds placed there will play Thursday night, and the winners will play
the 1-2 seeds on Saturday. The 4 survivors, 2 from each site, will be
in the Final Four at Albany the nexted weekend.

You may be right, but I'd hate to see them go four deep into
Hockey East, and only pick one ECAC team. I know we had this
discussion in here last year, so I won't rathole us again.
Even if Harvard had made the semi's, they may have had a chance.
Clarkson could have won the regular season if they had beat Brown
the last night of the season, but they blew it (and then destroyed
them in the quarter finals a few days later). If they had won the
division, they may have made it even with a loss in the semi's.
Cornell just doesn't have a good enough record to make it, despite
making it to the finals.
Good games, though, both of the ECAC semi's.

11.262 | | FSOA::JHENDRY | John Hendry, DTN 297-2623 | Mon Mar 16 1992 12:40 | 35 |
| Gary, I hope I'm wrong too, because I like the ECAC. Of the ECAC
teams, I think the only one other than St Lawrence that could be picked
is Clarkson. Harvard, being beat by a 10th seed at home in the
playoffs, just doesn't deserve to go - they might if their overall
record was good enough. I agree, Cornell's overall record isn't good
enough. If Clarkson had managed to beat Cornell then there would be no
question in my mind - they go and either Providence or BU (more likely
Providence, since BU was more highly ranked during the season and had a
better overall record) stays home.
Just like with college hoops, the conference tourneys in college
hockey, at least in the East, have outlived their usefulness. Why have
a tournament if everyone plays a full round-robin schedule during the
season? The ECAC tournament was started because that wasn't the case
30 years ago. Each night of the semifinals drew less than 6,000 people.
The finals drew over 12,000 (and were outdrawn by the Matignon-CM game a
couple of nights earlier) and a friend of mine who was there told me that
about 75% of the crowd was from either Maine or New Hampshire. He also
told me the area of New York where Clarkson and St Lawrence is located
got hit with 18 inches of snow on Thursday and the teams just got out
in time. There was no local team in the ECAC tournament thanks to
Harvard's loss to RPI, and the BC - Providence basketball game in the
Big East tournament ended up being at the same time as their hockey
teams were playing in Boston Garden.
The ECAC tournament, should it continue, I believe should be moved to
the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany. Since the ECAC base is in New York,
it would be more convenient for more teams and their fans to play
there. The only fans that would be really more inconvenienced than
they are now are those from Harvard and Brown. Boston is the right
location for the Hockey East tournament but they may be better off to
move it to Conte Forum at BC - the size is right and the rent is
cheaper, even though it would give the Eagles a home ice advantage.

| re John:
There was an editorial in the Albany paper (surprise) saying they may
move the tournament to Albany. This was the last year of the lease
with the Gahden and the ECAC. It's closer to the middle
geographically, and has 2 local teams (RPI, Union).
Saw the end of the RPI-SLU game. Heard a couple of calls were
questionable which led to the power play, but that was based on the
biased radio call. Too bad though, would have been nice...

Granted, when they lost to Harvard a few years back they'd played the

NM beat Wisconsin 6-3 and Minnesota beat Colorado College 5-1.
The CCHA finals are tonight with Michigan (6-2 winners over Miami) and
Lake Superior (5-3 winners over Michigan State) facing off.
In Division 3, the National Title went to Plattsburgh, 7-3 winners over
Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Salem State won the consolation, 7-6 (OT)
over Wisconsin-Superior. Stevens-Point beat Salem 12-7 in the semis
while Plattsburgh beat Superior 8-5.
Spud, in answer to your question in the high school note, the teams in
this part of the country have a generous amount of Massachusetts kids,
occasionally some kids from the Midwest (Harvard and for some reason,
Providence seem to lead in Minnesota kids) and depending on the
schools, some Canadians. BC prides itself on being 100% American and
has never had a Canadian kid play for them. BU used to be about 50/50
American/Canadian but has made great inroads in beating BC for good
Massachusetts kids, especially out of the Catholic schools. NU is
usually about 50/50 Canadian/American. Maine and New Hampshire always
have a few Western Canadian kids. Vermont always has a few out of
Quebec since their campus is only 2 hours from Montreal. The most
Canadian-based team in the east is Cornell (a/k/a the University of
Ontario at Ithaca) who seldom has more than 5 Canadian kids on the
team.

Lake Superior plays Minnesota and Northern Michigan plays Michigan
today.
Eastern quarterfinals:

Michigan State 3 Maine 2
A&W and I went to Providence. The Wisconsin game wasn't much of a
contest but MSU's upset over Maine was a classic. State grabbed a 3-1
lead in the second period on a bad goal - Maine goalie Garth Snow left
a bad rebound. Maine scored late in the second and then State hung on
for dear life the rest of the way. Maine had few bounces go their way
in the 3rd period and when they did get any, State goalie Mike Gilmore
held the fort. This was in an end of the rink that was all Maine fans.
This sets up a potential all-Big Ten Final Four in hockey if Michigan
and Minnesota win today, with Wisconsin vs Michigan and State vs
Minnesota. In Albany, of all places.
Nexted year's Final Four is in Milwaukee and is hosted by Wisconsin.

Down 6-3 late in the second period, Michigan mounted a fierce comeback,
scoring with 1 second left in the second period and getting 3 in the
3rd. The winner came with 1:38 left. I imagine with games like this
and their basketball game yesterday, Ann Arbor must have really been
rocking!
In Thursday's quarterfinals, State plays Superior and Michigan plays
Wisconsin.
With 3 teams in hockey's Final Four and 2 in men's hoops, there cain't
be much doubt who the top conference is this winter. Big Ten, no
question.

| Well, in spite of sitting in the middle of the Maine block of fans, I
found myself rooting for Michigan State as my Big Ten bigotry came out
bigtime. :-) In spite of that, I feel badly for the folks from Maine.
They played a great game, and had even one of about 4 shots that banged
off the pipes and out in the third gone in, I'm sure they would have
won the game. That third period was some of the most intense hockey
I've seen -- quick, good passing, good shots, great goal-tending, no
penalties. And the second period had had a lot of penalties. Looked
like both coaches had told the players to just play during the break
between the periods, and their teams followed through.

| And, Wisconsin still has the best fans in college hockey. Though Maine
had more fans for their game, the Wisconsin fans outdo anybody in sheer
lunacy and loyalty. Folks were actually doing the polka in the aisles
when the Wisconsin band started up with the Budweiser song ending in
"When you say Wisconsin, you've said it all". Interesting contrast
between the Wisconsin band and a lone trumpeter for St Lawrence.
The Maine fans are good. I can just imagine what they're like at a
game in Orono. Heard one Maine rooter say the school sold 3,000
tickets and there were easily 20 buses outside the Civic Center after
the game. St Lawrence had a few fans and they were pretty quiet but
then again, they didn't have much to cheer about. The State fans,
probably the smallest contingent, probably went home the happiest.
The 3rd period was outstanding especially when contrasted with a fairly
out-of-hand second period.
All kinds of people, not just the Wisconsin folks, were wearing buttons
with the famous Badger Bob Quote "It's a great day for hockey" and it
was on a big banner walking into the Civic Center.

Well I didn't get to see the whole game and missed the entire 2nd
period.
There have been lots complaints by the Wisconsin players in the local
press about poor officiating. Lake S. had two 5 on 3 advantages in
the 2nd period when they tied the score. Plus a penalty was called
on UW in the final 5 minutes when they were down 4-3.
I hate to see games reduced to "officiating arguments", and can't
really comment on how valid Wisconsin's claims are. From what I did
see it was a closely contested game. Lake S. scored the game winner on
a great individual play.
The Badgers had a great year and were not expected to go far. Anyone
else have comments on the officiating.

| From having watched most of the game, the officiating was bad but it
was consistent. I read an analysis of the power play situations and
they came out just about even. The one that really killed Wisconsin
came with 3 minutes to go in the game - it was an attempt at a flying
elbow that missed but the Badger player got called for it anyway. LSSU
didn't score but they kept the pressure on and prevented Wisconsin from
pulling goalie Duane Derksen until there were 30 seconds to go.
The winning goal was a bad play by Derksen. A Lake Superior player
swung around the net and Derksen didn't get over to cover the post
quickly enough.
While the Badger fans kept up their usual high level of sportsmanship,
the same can't be said by the players. The Lakers scored an empty net
goal with 2 seconds left and the Wisconsin players not only were giving
the officials a hard time, but started several fights with the Lake
Superior players. Wisconsin had no reason to complain. They were a
5th or 6th seeded team that made the championship game and like I said,
the officiating, while bad, was bad both ways.

The NCAA banned Wisconsin hockey coach Jeff Sauer and
players Blaine Moore and Jason Zent from the team's next NCAA
tournament game because of improper conduct after this year's

ordered to forfeit the $50,000 it would have received for the
game. The penalties arose from a fracas at the end of the
penaltyfilled game won by Lake Superior State, 5-3. After the
game, Wisconsin players encircled and berated referee Tim
McConaghy.

hockey tournament during the weekend of March 25-28, 1993. Joe Louis
Arena in Detroit will be the other site. The finals will be at the

be a two game playoff for the title. Eligible schools are New
Hampshire College, Bemidji State, American International, Assumption,
Mercyhurst, Quinnipiac, Saint Anselms, Saint Michaels and Stonehill.

| While I was on vacation, I read that after 31 years of being played in
Boston (5 in Boston Arena and 26 in Boston Garden), the ECAC hockey
tournament is being moved to New York State. I can't remember whether
it will be in the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany or if it will be in
Lake Placid, but it will be the weekend of March 19-20. Hockey East
will have its finals in Boston Garden the same weekend.
For the past couple of years, the ECAC and Hockey East have been
participating in something called HockeyFest, where one league would
have its semifinals on a Thursday, the other league would have its
semifinals on a Friday and both leagues would play their championship
games on Saturday. The ECAC wanted to return to its prior format of 2
semifinals on Friday and then a consolation and championship game on
Saturday. They couldn't work out the dates.
Dates and so on aside, it makes more sense for the ECAC to play its
games in New York instead of in Boston since there are only 4 of its
schools really close to Boston - Harvard, Brown, Dartmouth and Yale.
Playing in Albany or Lake Placid, RPI, Union, Colgate, Cornell,
Clarkson and St Lawrence seem to be reasonably close and it's closer to
both Princeton and Vermont. It also means the leagues are forging more
of an individual identity instead of trying to get back closer together
and I'm not sure whether that's good or bad.
While I now watch more Hockey East games both live and on TV than ECAC
games, I'll miss the ECAC tournament.
