41.167How to use naked PS font file with ATM?MOIRA::FAIMANWandrer, du Mder, du bist zu HausTue Feb 11 1997 10:3119
I just got ATM Deluxe V4.0 this weekend, and I'm pleased with it so far. One of
the features it provides is that instead of putting your fonts in the system
folder, you can put them anywhere else on the disk, tell ATM about them, and
then ATM will let you "activate" them and "deactivate" them on the fly. If you
have tons of fonts, most of which you aren't using most of the time, then it's
nice to be able to leave them deactivated except when you need them.

The package also came with Adobe Type On Call, which comes with several free
fonts, which is where my question comes in. I chose to unlock the "Old Style 7"
and "Baker Signet/Impact" families. This downloaded several font files onto my
hard disk. However, the all I got were the outline files (the horizontal-bars-
with-a-capital-A icon). You can only tell ATM about *suitcases*, not about
fonts themselves.  I gather that the suitcase would contain the screen bitmaps;
but these fonts don't seem to have suitcases, which means that I don't have any
way to tell ATM about them, which means that I can't use them!

This seems strange. Am I missing something?

	-Neil
41.168This is an educated guessCADSYS::LARRICKTue Feb 11 1997 10:528
My guess is that the suitcases containing the screen fonts are elsewhere on the
Type On Call CD, unlocked, so that you can preview the faces on screen before
you decide which ones to unlock.

If so, you just need to copy the suitcases to the same folder as the PostScript
fonts (or to the same place as the other suitcases), and away you go.

I got ATM and Adobe Type Reunion as a bundle, I didn't install the
fonts from Adobe Type on Call yet, but the suitcases should be
available on the disk somewhere. I'll take a look later.

I was a little disappointed with ATM. There are some really nice
features, but having put aside Suitcase 3 in favor of ATM, I miss a few
of Suitcase's features like being able to open sounds and Fkeys, and
being able to open fonts when a certain application launches. Also, the
Anti-aliasing feature is great for large fonts, but they really need a
"do not anti-alias fonts less than xx points" button (where I can set
the value of xx) The small points with anti aliasing looks blurry...and
I use 11 point Garamond a lot and there is no screen font at 11 points
so I can't just tell it not to do the screen sizes.

By the way, Reunion is really cool! I haven't tried it with too many
programs yet, but it's got one excellent feature that the previous
version lacked...you can disable this one by application in case of
    conflicts!

Isn't the point of ATM to create optimized bitmaps so you don't need the
preformatted ones in the suitcases?
I have ATM (3-something, I'd like to get 4), but I really don't know how
it organizes things.

Well, yes, that's the theory as I understand it; but I get the impression that
ATM still needs at least one screen font around to get started.

Last night, I tried copying the fonts from the TOC to my hard disk individually,
instead of doing a "copy all", and this time I got the suitcases.
Unfortunately, when I attempted to access them from ATM, it told me they were so
badly damaged that it couldn't even begin to open them.

I guess it's time for a call to Adobe tech support.

Ok, the answer is...

The TOC purchaser program, which downloads the fonts from the CD-ROM to your
hard disk, isn't supposed to get the screen fonts for you. I don't know why it
did; but the ones it produces are bogus.

The screen fonts are freely available, unencoded, on the TOC disk, in the folder
named (I think) BITMAPS. You have to open that folder (which takes quite a
while, since it has hundreds of nested folders); find the nested folder whose
name is the three-digit font number of the font family you've downloaded; open
that nested folder to find the screen font suitcase file(s) for the family; and
copy them to the same place on your hard disk where the purchaser program saved
the outline fonts.

I'm not quite sure how one is supposed to figure this out from the TOC
documentation, but anyways, it works.

And the Baker/Signet font is a *really* neat semi-sans font, once you finally
get it downloaded. (Old Style Seven is also pretty nice, with built-in small
caps and old style figure sets.)
