972.0. "Decision Support Systems on top of Rdb/VMS" by IJSAPL::OLTHOF (Henny Olthof @UTO 838-2021) Fri Aug 09 1991 14:17

I'm looking for information on DSS (Decision Support Systems) that run
on top of Rdb/VMS. I've already checked the latest RSVP information and
the presentation done on this subject at DECworld 90.

So, who has information on this, like external reports, product reviews
in the trade press etc. Anything will help.

    Thanks,
    Henny Olthof, TP-DB Netherlands

    try VTX boss ??

consultant reports are likely to be in the Office space, not the
    Database space.

I believe Accumate can access Rdb and, if memory serves me,
they are based out of the UK (which would be good for you).

972.4What exactly are you looking for?BGO01::KETILSun Aug 11 1991 19:3210
Hi,

Maybe I'm misunderstand your question, but we have products like DECdecision
(Maybe renamed to DECquery for VMS), DECquery for DOS and MS-Windows.
DECquery for Ultrix and MAC are coming soon.

Another product is SAS.

972.6More on AcumenNSDC::SIMPSONThe shortest distance between any two mistakes is a straight linMon Aug 19 1991 22:3955
As Gerry says in .3, Acumen (owned by the Mars Group) offer something in this
domain. It is a very strong product, and (from working with some of their
people over the last 2-3 weeks) the company is clean.

They offer, through Accutrieve, dynamic SQL links to several DBMS's including
Rdb/VMS. The product will run with a character cell or DECwindows interface
on VMS. Other platforms are available, and ULTRIX is due to ship later this
month.

DSS's are nothing like anything we offer - it is rather like a glorified three
dimensional spread sheet tool. To give those people who asked an idea, some of
the features that they offer are as follows:

- Automatic highlighting of exceptions (e.g. 10% under budget).
- Ability to 'drill-down' to lower levels of detail. E.g. the application that
I am working on starts with a P&L spreadsheet for one Digital subsidiary,
and gives you the ability to explode figures in many dimensions (time,
geography, business, cost centre etc.), so that a manager can quickly
identify which parts of the business are hurting. In our project, at the
lowest level, it will be possible to pull out the individual invoices that
make up an item on the general ledger.
- Possibility to do 'what if' modelling. E.g. work out cost per man figures
for a geographical area if suppress jobs in one cost centre.

They operate at the following address:

EFFEM Management Services Ltd.,
Shoppenhangers House,
Shoppenhangers Road,
Maidenhead,
Berks. SL6 2PX.
England.
Tel: 0628 763661.

Now some information from sharing a few beers with Acumen - not guaranteed to
be correct or accurate (though I suspect that it is not wide of the mark):

The main competition is Comshare. This company enjoys the same reputation with
Acumen that we offer to Oracle. It is even worse in this (small) area of the
computer industry because they know each other personally, and Comshare go
around criticising individuals in the opposition camp ("well, you know what
their background is...." type of business!). Comshare are on commission, Acumen
are not...

Comshare have a PC version, which apparently has a very modern, appealing
icon type interface. However, what is behind is very old and out of date.

I found the Acumen product functionally strong and very quick (it uses RMS
files for internal storage on VMS). However the DECwindows user interface -
whilst efficient and easy to use - was not pretty.

Hope this helps

Another multi-dimensional spreadsheet type product is Holos from
Holistic Systems Ltd, 111 Uxbridge Rd, Ealing, London (tel 081 566
    2330).

This product uses either Rdb or Oracle as the underlying database
but does not make much use of the database. At the beginning of
a session all relevant data is read into memory. At the end of a
session changes are written back to the database.

A working set of at least 10 Mbytes is needed for adequate performance.

Holistic Systems have close ties with Oracle but will work wth us
(and support Rdb) if we introduce them to a customer.

972.8DEC/AVS Ultrix for Decision Support?JENEVR::RLEETue Sep 10 1991 22:5714
    Two cents worth:

o Don't forget to investigate whether or not DSS really needs to
       be Business Data Visualization!

In that domain - I have fielded a request for Rdb/VMS data to be made
available to a DECstation 5000 running under ULTRIX using the DEC/AVS
software or PV-Wave software for visualizing multi-dimensional data.

The request had to do with global economic projections and investment
    opportunity isolation.

Business trend analysis taken to the nth-degree! Just imagine what
they might see with a Virtual Reality fly through of their data.
