255.0. "New themes for ADG DECNET nodes" by NECK::THOMPSON () Wed Jul 12 1989 15:06

	Announcing the return of the "Name that node" competion!!!!

	Yes indeed, after its phenomenally successful launch last year it has
been decided (well I decided) to invite you to excercise your creative faculties
and suggest not only new node names but also (tah daaahhh!) new themes for
DECNET node names for all these scrillions of workstations that could be landing
on YOUR desk at any moment.

	Rools are......
	DECNET nodenames - must be 6 characters long, must be unique anywhere
	on the EASYNET (You can check with $MC NCP, TELL ANCHOR SHOW NODE x) and
	should not be of a nature that would embarrass your maiden aunt.

	Themes - anything goes.

I forgot to mention that the free ethernet terminators will be awarded to all
successful entrants.

I'll start.... how about Glass Insulators as a theme?

    As long as it isn't on the net already and it is not "dodgy" in

    Ummmmm....

    I've just thought a bit more about this and have decided that I
    don't understand the problem anymore!

    Currently we do not have enough node numbers allocated to us to
    put all of the workstations onto the easynet. This means that new
    nodes won't be on the net anyway.

    When Decnet Phase V is implemented, we will have.

    When Decnet Phase V is implemented we will be able to have node
    names up to 311 characters (I think!).

    This is more than enough characters to provide node names a plenty!

    So what's the problem ?

    				Jamie.
255.16But what's the question??ELBOW::DRAPERSteve DraperTue Aug 01 1989 18:4810

	But we will have by the time the new nodes arrive - which will be
yonks before DECnet Phase V.

	So - what's the question, Jamie??

    I thought we (Digital) were running out of node numbers hence the
    need for all these hidden nodes.

    Obviously I'm misinformed since if we're going to be allocated loads
    more node numbers we've got to think of loads more node names!

    Any indication as to approximately how many names we've got to think
    of Steve ?

    Cheers,

    				Jamie.
255.18We are running out of node numbers,HEWIE::RUSSELLBX Turbo drivers do it with woooosh!Thu Aug 03 1989 11:5320
but not node names!

Put simply, each existing decnet area from 1 to 62 will have it's *own*
area 63, thereby doubling the capacity of the EASYNET from 65,000 to
130,000. The intention is this will give us enough expansion until
DECnet Phae V comes along.

So, area 44 will have node 63.1 called "FRED", and area 45 will have it's own
node 63.1 called "JIM", and so on.

The names must still be unique, otherwise you'll have all kind of problems.

Now, since the plabn is that over a period of time most (all?) ADG people
will have workstations, we're going to need one node name per person.

So, get suggesting!

More details are avilable; come roundand see us if you want 'em.

Peter.

Forgive me if I am being totally thick, but does this mean that all the

Jane.
255.23Confused??...you soon will be!!ELBOW::DRAPERSteve DraperThu Aug 03 1989 20:1316
No they won't be inaccessible from the net (otherwise, why bother with node
names/numbers?)

But they *will* only be known by the main area to which your "hidden" 63 area
is attached. This means that:

	1.	Certain things won't work
	2.	Other things will work - but you have to do them differently
	3.	Yet other things will be completely unaffected

I told you that you'd be confused!!! Now, to *really* get confused, I suggest
read the Hidden Areas User's Guide that Jerry distributed the other day. Have a
word with Jerry if you don't have a copy. Have a word with me if you're still
confused after reading it.

255.24What will and won't workCUCKOO::BRUNNOCKGood drivers do it considerably...Fri Aug 04 1989 11:2351
Hi all,
    my workstation is in a hidden area (CAROLE, 63.37) so, from first hand,
here is how you work with EasyNet.

    1.	Using local nodes (YARD, OBLONG, FOOT, NECK, CUCKOO, etc., etc.) you
	just use the name as you would now (eg DIR YARD::,
	MAIL ANDY.TXT OBLONG::BRUNNOCKA).

    2.	Using remote nodes (e.g. REOxxx, MARVIN, LEROUF, etc) which are not
	in area 44 you have to prefix with the node CURVE
	(e.g. DIR CURVE::MARVIN::, MAIL ANDY.TXT CURVE::LEROUF::BRUNNOCK).

    3.	You cannot use any software that depends on remote server communications
	(e.g. VAXnotes) because when you try to OPEN CURVE::SUBURB::READING,
	VAXnotes calls the server on CURVE and tries to access a file called
	NOTES$LIBRARY:SUBURB::READING.NOTE which won't work. However, if you
	are running DECwindows, you can SET HOST to a machine with VAXnotes
	V2 and DECwindows and enter the following commands :

		$ DEFINE DECW$DISPLAY CAROLE::WSA0
		$ NOTES/DECWINDOWS

	and DECwindows notes runs on your workstation from the remote node
	(sneaky isn't it) :-). I have this running at this very moment via
	CUCKOO so if you want a demo, come see me!

	If you have a VAXnotes conference on your node and you want people
	outside of area 44 to access it, then you have to move it to an area
	44 node.

    4.	For other people to access your node they have to go through CURVE
	as well. To do a directory fo my default decnet account, use
	the command

		DIR CURVE::CAROLE::

	(Nodes in area 44 [i.e. FUTURS, SHAPES, CURRNT, etc.] do not need
	 to prefix the node name. From CURRNT you can just do a DIR CAROLE::.
	 If you get a `remote node is unknown', try 64549::. IS might not
	 have got around to setting up the hidden area node names on that
	 machine yet.)

Those are the only restrictions that I have found. Everything (except the
VAXnotes conferences) can be solved by putting CURVE:: in front of the source/
target name. If you have any specific queries, call me on 7781-4416 and if I
don't know the answer, I'll try it!

Hidden areas do NOT make life difficult; they just slightly modify the way
that you do things.

Andy

255.26CURRNT::BADMANYou're ugly, but you intrigue me!Fri Aug 04 1989 12:5711
    Simon has a point; you're *not* letting us choose our own machine
    names. You're asking for suggestions of names that you can then
    use for workstations when they arrive. The difference is obvious;
    Simon is suggesting that when person X gets their workstation person
    X can think up a name and register it. You are proposing to name
    the workstations for the people receiving them from a list made
    up of our suggestions.

    				Jamie.
255.27Goal has moved - rules remain the same. NECK::THOMPSONMon Aug 07 1989 10:4419
WHen I opened this note, the method of registering new node names could take
anything up to 4 weeks to confirm. So for instance out of the 11 names chosen
for the VS2000's which were at the time thought to be unique across easynet, 2
were already in use in other hidden areas.

But today, thanks to a great leap in technology, IS can find out within a few
minutes if the node names have been registered - (this is starting to sound
like a Maggie Philbin script).

So Jamie (and others) you CAN choose your own node names if and when you get a
workstation and I have absolutely no desire to ask you to do otherwise.

However, there will be loadsa nodes that are for communal use e.g. disk servers,
printer servers, passthrough servers, DNS.DFS servers, and it would be a
little easier to keep track of who runs what in Blasingsmoke if the ADG nodes
could be identified by common themes. So the names suggested so far DO have a
value, even if the original target for the names has changed.

So what's yors called?
255.28On a clear night !!CHEST::CLIFFEA HaggistarianMon Aug 07 1989 14:5851
	Ok you asked for node names, here are just a selection that
	  you can see on a good night with a good telescope that have
	  six character names.
	A decent star catalogue will give lots more !!

	Stars :

	DENAB	KAITOS	MIRACH	ALAMAK	HAMAL	MIRA	ALGOL	RIGEL
	ELNATH	SAIPH	MIRZAM	ALHENA	SIRIUS	ADHARA	WEZEN	CASTOR
	POLLUX	NAOS	TUREIS	DUBHE	ACRUX	GACRUX	ALIOTH	MIZAR
	SPICA	ALKAID	AGENA	KOCHAB	GEMMA	SHAULA	VEGA	NUNKI
	ALTAIR	SADR	DENAB	ALNAIR

	This means of course that you can put the stars in a cluster(!),
	  named after the constellations.

	Unfortunatley, most stars in the real constellations have more than
	  six letters, but when extended node names come into being,
	  you could have ;
		LIBRA cluster	nodes :- ZUBENELGENUBI
					 ZUBENESCHEMALI
					 ZUBENELAKRAB		!!

	Constellations : (with common or English meaning)

	ANTLIA	Air pump APUS	Bird of paradise
