Subject: CRAY RESEARCH AGREEMENT ANNOUNCED 1

I am very pleased to announce that we have entered into an agreement
with CRAY Research Inc. to become a worldwide distributor of the new
entry level CRAY supercomputer known as the CRAY Y-MP EL.

Over the years, CRAY Research has established a worldwide reputation
as the premier supplier of outstanding supercomputers which up until
now, have dominated the high price and high performance end of the
market for numerically intensive computing. CRAY Research's
supercomputing technology leadership has allowed them to take the very
best attributes of their larger CRAY Y-MP series and build an entry
level system, with the very same wide range of applications in
research, education, government, and in some commercial applications.

Basically, the CRAY Y-MP EL is a UNIX(tm) platform optimized to run
vector applications where it will deliver performance over to 133
MFLOPS, supports more than 600 proven technical applications, and can
communicate via FDDI or HIPPI to name just a few of its features.
Best of all, this system is expected to have an average selling price
of under $1M. Over time, a typical CRAY sale generates an equal
amount of business in products like workstations, so every one of
these CRAY Y-MP ELs offer the opportunity to build upon for the long
term.

In support of our efforts, CRAY Research is deploying a DEDICATED team
of very in-depth support specialists across the U.S., and working with
our team, CRAY Research is installing a system plus people at our MR04
facility. As far as our efforts are concerned, you will soon see a
special mailing, articles in Sales Update, Sales Flash, and training
seminars offered nationwide. In addition, our Production Systems
Sales Leaders (PSSL), Customer Service, and a key group of Sales
Support Resource Center people, will soon receive in-depth training.

In summary, Digital may now sell, on an almost exclusive basis, the
new, small, CRAY Y-MP EL. CRAY Research will build it, ship it to the
customer, and Digital will install and service. You will be supported
by an array of both CRAY Research and Digital resources.

Need some information NOW? In the U.S. just call 1-800-DEC-ISIT to
talk to our Competitive Sales Team, learn more about the product, and
ask them to send you an information packet.

The CRAY name in supercomputing, and the Digital name worldwide; just
couldn't be a better combination.

Good selling!

66.1more info ?LARVAE::SELBY_MTue Jan 21 1992 03:424

66.2NOW IT'S CRAY AND SUN??????SWAM2::KELLER_FRThu Jan 23 1992 13:0613
And also provide a differentiation between our agreement with CR on
the use of ARA (nee ALPHA) and Cray's new agreement (this week)
with SUN to use SPARC. The uninitiated, reading the press article saying
"Digital to sell Cray system" and then the next article that says Cray
to use SUN Sparc processors, could come to the conclusion that Digital
    will sell SPARC-based Cray systems.

All this realationship activity is confusing to customers, and it
provides us an opportunity to educate them. As long as we're prepared
    with the right messages.

I looked in the EASYNOTES VTX infobase for references to CRAY, but
    found none.

I just put a note in the ASK_EASYNET conference asking if anyone knew
of an existing source of information.

    Stay tuned....
