255.0. "Second hand cassette decks?" by HEAD::KING (Now that's what I call a dead parrot...) Tue Jan 29 1991 14:17

    Could someone please give me some advice on second hand cassette decks.
    I've got a Denon deck at the moment which I use to tape CD's for the
    car stereo. The Denon I'd like to use as a main recording deck, but I
    don't have massive funds to buy a new playback deck to tape from.
    Therefore I'm not bothered about the recording quality, just the
    playback. So any advice on second-hand decks under 80 quid would be
    helpful!

    Thanks in advance.

255.1Buy a WalkpersonCRATE::WATSONLife is just a passing fadTue Jan 29 1991 14:5811
    A slightly lateral approach would be to buy a Walkman with a Line (not
    headphone) output. Both Sony and Aiwa make these. Sony make play only
    at about 100 and play / record at 250. You would only need to buy the
    former as you could record onto your Denon. The sound quality of these
    are excellent - better (or as good as) Nak. tape decks !!! - and you
    also get a Walkman for free !

    	Just and idea,

255.2What about tape transport?HEAD::KINGNow that's what I call a dead parrot...Tue Jan 29 1991 15:437

    Cheers Rik...what about the speed control. I haven't used a walkman in
    ages, but from what I can remember even most of the best weren't too
    good at keeping the tape moving at an exact speed. I believe Sony have
    a 'Direct Drive' system(??) which overcomes this, any ideas?!

    I own a Nakamichi CR7 and a Pro-walkman.

    Although the Pro-walkman is great, its NOWHERE near the Nak.

    Just my 2p.

    Rob,

    	I use to have a pro-Walkman and when setup correctly and powered
    by a (modified) Naim-SNAPS I thought it was easily a match for all but
    the best Naks. of a year or two ago. (Can't remember their numbering schema
    - so don't know what a CR7 is ...)

    	Rik

    It's gone now as I decided that I didn't listen to it enough (well
    at all really) and only used it to make tapes for the car (An Alpine
    7480L(??) - why do people give things such bl**dy silly numbers)
255.5Its good but..................HAND::LARSENRob Larsen @BSTWed Jan 30 1991 12:457
Re .4

	A Nak CR7 is 1 down from Top of Range....So It maybe an unfair
	rival to the little Pro.
	Also you may need a Naim 52 to tell the diffrence ;-)

    What's a Naim 52?!!!

    Chris.
255.7Naim-52CRATE::WATSONKnowledge is power.Wed Jan 30 1991 14:0526
    The Naim 52 is Naim Audio's latest pre-amp.

    What you get for your money (4000-00 I think) is two 135 sized boxes
    one containing the electronics and an other the power supplie(s).

    The '52 is a radical departure for Naim in that it has a remote control
    and a lot of the price of the beast has gone into ensureing that this
    doesn't affect the quality of the sound.

    	1. The microprocessor is only active when receiving messages.
    	2. The microprocessor has its own completely separate PSU.
    	3. The volume control (also remote controlable) has an elaborate
    	   (read expensive) clutch mechanism and is basically a potentiometer
    	   (NAC-32) not a resistor network (Linn LK-1).

    Other goodies include separate PSU's for each channel and switching on
    of circuits only when needed - I think.

    Also I belive that the circuit is more like the old -32 that the newer
    -72.

    Don't hold you breath but there will be a non-remote version available
    - I guess it will cost a lot less ... :-)

    I can only think of 4000 reasons why not to get one - Oh and the ION
    Nexus pre-amp :-)

    Rob,
    	Just out of interest which made the biggest difference Lingo or 52?

255.1052 reasons ?HAND::LARSENRob Larsen @BSTWed Jan 30 1991 14:2817
    Re .8
	Rik,
             The 52 made the largest diffrence by a long way.

The Lingo did wonderful things but the 52 made me realise what the
Lingo was Actually Doing.

The biggest diffrence was on CD though, Just imagine CD with REAL bass,
no Chainsaw top end etc. LP still wins but CD aint that bad.

I also found over 4000 reasons to not upgrade my 72 till I heard the 52 !.

Keep the faith.

Rob.

	The original topic was based in the "under 80" category.
	Ten notes later you need a 4000 pre-amp. Inflation is
	on it's way down not up!.

    Hahahahahaha.

    Any *realistic* suggestions to my original problem?!!! =;+)

    Or should I sell my car and buy another Denon!!!

    Chris =:+)
255.13I was seriousCHEST::WATSONKnowledge is power.Thu Jan 31 1991 11:5112
    Sorry Chris,
    	I thought mine was a realistic suggestion. Spend 80 (or there
    abouts - Sony Walkman WMDD30 89.99, Dolby B, don't know about lineout) on
    a high quality play-only Walkman and use that to make tapes from. As I said
    this also has the advantage that you get a Walkman for free...

    	Rik

     ..DD.. = Quartz Direct Drive - so no problems with speed stability.

    PS .. and if you should ever rob a bank then you can buy a Naim-52 and
    listen to how really good it is :-)
255.14!VULCAN::KINGNow that's what I call a dead parrot...Thu Jan 31 1991 14:3214

    Thanks Rik.

    I don't know what I'm going to do yet...I saw a Yamaha for 70 quid with
    B/C noise reduction etc... It was the deck I almost bought instead of
    the Denon, so I've heard it and I like the sound of it. Would it be
    advisable to change the heads/rollers on a second-hand deck, can you do
    this yourself, or is it best to get it done at a dealers?

    Chris

    P.S. When I rob the bank I can think of a lot of things I need to
           spend the money on before I spend 4 grand on a pre-amp!! =;*)

255.15WOTVAX::MEAKINSClive MeakinsThu Jan 31 1991 15:455
    There are some quite reasonable decks available for 90 quid, or so the
    HI-Fi press say. Maybe you could stretch to one of these - look in the
    best buy pages of Audiophile. You could try places like Richer Sounds
    where they sell off last year's models for a good price reduction.
    Again, check the HI-Fi press for the adverts.

    Chris,

    I have a Technics RB200 I used to use as a second deck, its a few years
    old and condition isn't excellent, but it records and plays good
    quality.....I'm only asking 30 quid ONO, contact me if your interested.
