202.0. "Speakers for sound and Vision" by HAMPS::LINCOLN_J (Where sheep dare) Wed Sep 05 1990 14:48

I'm interested in getting some 'proper' hi-fi at present. It
seems to me that it's much better value for money lately
than it used to be, so all my previous stuff has been combined
	systems.

Choosing most things is relatively easy but what to get for
speakers?. I've read the other topics and have some ideas but
there's another factor that doesn't seem to get taken into
account much here or by hi-fi reviewers ie.

Speakers tend to be largish objects that you can't hide away
and the current fashion seems to be for black laquer boxes.
I don't like black laquer boxes, no I'll rephrase that, I
	hate black laquer boxes.

So I'm looking for speakers, not too big, small even which
will blend in with traditional wooden furniture yet produce
	good sounds.

I believe I could get Wharfedale Diamonds in wood veneer
but I've yet to see any. Also the make Castle has been suggested
as a likely source. Any other suggestions?. Also where can
you go to view, every shop I've seen only seems to have the
	funeral style.

202.1You can't be looking very hard ... ;-)BAHTAT::SALLITTDave @RKG, 831-3117Wed Sep 05 1990 16:099
There are zillions of good small speakers under 200 that you can get
with either real wood veneer or wood-like vinyl finishes.

If you're really choosy about the wood matching existing furniture,
Monitor Audio can do a bespoke finish with matching stands - de rigeur
for small speakers - at a price. They're good speakers too. An MA
dealer is your best source for data.

With the noteable exception of the LINN Isobarik and Roxan Darius the
best speakers in the world are both small.

    	1. ION System JK-1 - any colour as long as its black - but I
suspect Richard Hayes (the MD and general nice guy) could do a special.
These are 400-00 odd pounds but really do demand the best F.E.

    	2. Linn Kan's - wide selection of finishes - not sure of price.
These are amasing ... Activly driven with 4x135's they sound better
than 'bricks - even got bass.

So take heart althougth the ones above are a bit pricey (too say
the least) they do show what can be done. BUT - this is the important
bit - mount them correctly. The smaller a speaker the less bass it
produces this means that the ear has to ``fill in'' a lot. The better
quality of the clues it gets, the better the effect.

A good track to to tell ``the Men from the boys'' is ``Faith'' by
``The Cure'' - not sure of the name of the album (may even be Faith)
    but is a grey cover...

    	Happy listening. 8)

AH-HA!! So you've listened to all the speakers in the world to say that Kan's
are the best.

The other speakers (small) that are worth mentioning are PROAC. They are
incredibly small (about 9x6x6 inches height, width, depth) but play like the
albert hall. My mate had a pair connected to a NAD 3020 and it was impressive.
Front end by the way was a rega planar 3. And yes they do come in wood look
alike.

I've used the Bose AM-5 for about a year, and they're (IMHO) the
clearest sounding small speakers around. They cost about # 500.

202.5I want more than a brown coating!HAMPS::LINCOLN_JWhere sheep dareMon Sep 10 1990 14:1922
In fact I've spent a fair while looking around but shops just
don't stock what they say they do and usually just keep the
black version, "other finishes to order" even though you
don't really know what you're getting. The ones that I did
see were simply dreadful - plastic wood finishes in particular
are just yuk!!! - and this applies to some fairly famous
	examples too.

Not being keen enough to waste any more time/effort I bought
some Wharfedale Diamonds which are at least small enough to
be inconspicuous!. Perhaps some day I'll dust off some woodworking
	skills and package them properly.

Since at 80 these cost less than half what I thought I might
spend I'm considering adding a base speaker too. The best sounding
system I remember hearing used this arrangement and I think that
the base speaker positioning is relatively unimportmant so can go
into that awkward corner where the main speakers couldn't go.

Any observations on such arrangements are welcome.
