171.0. "KEf/Quad Assistance please" by CLARID::HODSMAN (Jeremy - ASDPO (ADU) @ VBO) Thu Apr 26 1990 15:11

Ild like some help on two topics :

    1. I have a pair of KEF 104 original speakers. The foam cover
crumbles when touched now and often falls off. On one of these
occasions my son mistook the tweeter dome for a button and gave it a
big push. So questions are :

    - is there a technique for restoring the shape of the dome
    - if not not could a kind person post the address of KEF
(maybe telephone number too) so I can order a new one.

    Now onto the quad.
I have the 104 tuner, but there is a fault. When tuned to
a station (both manual and preset) it wont stay locked on the
    frequency.
It takes a few minutes no matter how long the tuner is left on for,
so I dont think it due to warm up problems. Does anybody know
how serious this might be to fix ? Here in France, british equipment
costs double UK prices, and repairs are outragously expnsive.
Maybe if someone could post quads address/tel number I could get in
    touch.

    Many thanks for all assistance
    Jeremy

	re your dome...

When I had the same problem I used the vacuum cleaner nozzle held
close but not toching the dome. The suction, used carefully, pulled
the dome back out. I haven't noticed any deterioration in sound.

This was with a soft dome tweeter.

	Hope it helps..

	Simon.

I had some 104ab's, and would not recommend the vacuum cleaner
    approach!
However, as you've nothing to loose..except the tweeter, perhaps.
Does the speaker still work OK ? If so, why not leave it alone.
Yes, the foam does deteriorate over time, but if you're handy, you
could make up a frame for a grill and fix to the cabinet.

KEF used to be in Maidstone, Kent.

I had the same problem with an AR 8Ls tweeter. I took it back to
the shop (Laskys) and they sent it to AR). Anyway I picked up the
speaker about 2-3 weeks later and it cost me 18 (60ish I think
but since my speakers were still under garantee (4 years old and
    1 year left).
