139.0. "Sony CDP 970 Review" by LESLIE::LESLIE (Andy  Leslie, VMS/CSSE NEW B1/2-5) Thu Jan 04 1990 12:17

I thought the Sony CDP 970 deserved its own note/review.

    Features: 45 bit filter
                8 times oversampling
              	2 D/A converters
    	      	20 key direct program
49-Key Full remote control including volume
Custom file system/programme bank - remembers discs and
a memo feature allows you to note a 10 char memo. ALso
    		 remembers programme used!
Custom Edit - you enter the time and it builds the fullest
tape it can from available tracks.
Time fader - fades track at preset time for taping
    		Optical digital output

    Price was 279.99.

Performance: well, it definitely passes the "grungy CD" test. I have
one CD that never previously played on my AIWA that plays faultlessly
    now.

Only time will tell how the features noted above will work for me, but
it's VERY clear and VERY well balanced across the hearing range.

One criticism is that A<->B repeat is ONLY available from the remote
    control.

    Remote A/B repeat:

If you were next to the unit, you might as well turn the disk over
    yourself! 8-)

    Rob.
p.s. Sounds like a serious bit of hardware you have there.

Er what? A/B is the ability to mark a start point (A) and an end point
    (B) on the disk and to repeat it.

Or was late-night facetiousness in there? :-)

Sounds very nice.

Presumably the 45 bit stuff is just the precision used when digital filtering.

I imagine that the D/A's are still 16 bit or 18 bit ?

    18 bit.

The logo on the front of the sony is mismeading it is actually 3.5bit
(So say What HiFi ? anyway).

What HiFi gave it a good review. It came second in their review
    of mid priced CD players.
