136.0. "Is it worth repairing an old CD player ?" by PEKING::TAYLORG (Bodybuilders do it till it hurts) Tue Jan 02 1990 14:44

I have a JVC XLV220 CD player that is miss tracking on the first
minute or the first track of every CD i have. I have tried a few
of my CD's in another CD player to see if it is the CD or Player
    that has the problem.

The CD's played correctly on the other CD player so, my CD player
is the problem. How much do you reckon it would cost to
    repair ?

The CD player is 3-4 years old and cost 180 new. Would it be cheaper
buying another CD player rather than paying to get the JVC
    repaired ?

I am intrested in the Marantz CD50SE which costs 300.

    Thanks in advance
    Grant

How long has your CD been mis-tracking? If it's not long, it could be a
    hair of fluff.

If the optics need attention, I've heard of 30 to 60 pounds being charged.
If it's towards the higher figure you may worry in case something else
like the switches start to age....

If the Laser assembly needs replacing it's nearer 125 - buy a new 'un.

It has been miss tracking for about 2 years and I have just got
fedup with the miss tracking. Appart from this problem the player
    is OK.

The unit uses a 3 beam tracer to read the CD's.

is it worth paying an extra 40 on a 170 CD player (JVC) for the four year
extension to the warranty?

are CD players more likely to breakdown compared to other hi-fi bits?

cheers...

>is it worth paying an extra 40 on a 170 CD player (JVC) for the four year
>extension to the warranty?

The Consumers Association (publishers of Which) reckon that all 5 year
guarantees are poor value for money compared to the risk or costs involved. The
chances are that your CD player won't go wrong and that you will have wasted
your 40 on the other hand if it does break down & cost 100 to repair you'll
wish that you had got the guarantee.

You also have to balance the relative cost of replacement, if your 170 CD
player fails after 4 years it may well be reasonable to buy a new one at the
prevailing lower cost.

I haven't got an extended warranty on my HiFi or TV but have on my video and
camcorder partly because they are mechanical and thus more likely to fail (as
are disks or printers in a computer system) but also because the cost was about
10% of the purchase price and thus more reasonable than the 25% in the case of
your CD player.

    art,

I had my technics CD Player for about two weeks when it started to play
up. Put in a disc and you could hear it start to spin, move to the
index but it didn't return as it should with the number of tracks etc.
it just kept spinning. Only way to stop it was to switch it off.

They swapped the transport under warranty and (touch wood) I haven't
had any more problems with it since (2 years).

I haven't taken out the extended warranty, but then I plan to upgrade
it sooner or later or when it breaks down :-)

thanks both,

i've had a sony discman which has & still works perfectly for the last five
years...

I wonder whether 10 per year isn't bad value for the warranty, but I'm also
concerned that the extended warranty may have lots of loopholes & get out
clauses, & that the insurance company backing up this extended policy could go
into receivership

ho hum...

.8I wonder whether 10 per year isn't bad value for the warranty,

Is it 10 a year? Or is it 40 now? There's a difference.. I personally
agree with others: a hike of 25% of the purchase price for an extra
four years warranty is not worth it.

I didn't go for the extra warranty after all; money probably better spent on
four new discs!
