85.0. "I want to upgrade my CD player..." by KEITH::EDMUNDS ($ no !fm2r, no comment) Mon May 15 1989 21:38

    I'm in the market for a new CD player, partly because I want to upgrade
    my old Phillips CD104, and secondly because it's stopped working. I
    went down to Reading today and looked around, but there are millions to
    chose from. I used to follow the hifi mags, but haven't for a few
    years, so would anyone like to offer some advice? What models would be
    worth considering? Sound quality is the number one priority; A/B repeat
    is essential; price around 300 max; useful extras which are not
    essential are remote control and direct track keying.

    All advice gratefully received...

    If you can stand the Amstrad reject styling then get a MARANTZ CD65IISE

85.3Thanks so far...KEITH::EDMUNDS$ no !fm2r, no commentMon May 15 1989 22:445
    Yes, I read that it was good, but the only magazine I could find that
    listed features said it did not have A/B repeat, which I must have. Can
    anyone confirm / deny this?

85.4CD 270 ???MALLET::JEFFERYThe wind just kind of blew me here.Tue May 16 1989 02:1611
    I hear that Denon are pretty good, although I've only heard the
    expensive one (See Bristol HiFi Show report).

    Not had any complaints with the Phillips CD-270 (I think it is 270),
    and that costs about 250 quid. Only real complaint is that the Step
    styling is unattractive, and that it would definitely look wrong
    if you had an AIWA cassette deck as well!

    Cheers.

    I have The MARANTZ CD65. It is worth having. Sound is good. It
    does have a repeat option (Not sure about A/B repeat as .5). Looks
    good. Don't know wheather this is o any use but it say's that it
    has a Z-Filter with 16 Bit Twin DAC Full Floating Mechanism.

    Costs about 200-250

    Hope this helps

85.7CD65MkII Special Edition!SEDOAS::KORMANTue May 16 1989 16:0710
    Yes, The Marantz CD62MkII *SE* (Special Edition) has consistently
    scored higher than other machines in its price group in all the
    reviews. It costs 299.xx, as opposed to the 250 for the standard
    CD65MkII. The problem you will have is getting one!

    Last time I enquired I was quoted 3/4 months!

    If you find one, please let me know where...cos I want one too!

    A-B repeat enables you to repeat any given section of a track. Thanks
    for all the replies, but it does not look as if the Marantz has A-B...

85.9Denon DCD-810?AYOU30::PAULCMe and you against the worldThu May 18 1989 14:518
    I've got a Denon DCD-810, cost 249.95. It has remote control, is
    programmable, and has repeat A-B. It received pretty good reviews
    when it came out. It's my first CD player so I can't really compare
    the sound quality to any other player, but it sounds OK to me.
    Just one thing - it seems quite noisy when it's searching for tracks;
    is this common?

    How noisy? If it sounds like you've got an RD54 in there then take it
    back for a repair. My Technics SLP350 is just about silent.

    i had a cd104 which packed up and was replaced by a cd473 which
    also packed up. after some looking i got hold of a MARANTZ CD65iiSE
    it was well worth the wait. I would recommend this chap for <300
    pounds.

    	it does have an A/B facility you can set up any time to start
    and stop playing within a tract or the whole CD. I have not tried
    it out though .

    You still trust the reliability of Phillips/Marantz after
    two machines packing up?

    will have had 9yrs of CDing 24 quid a year can't be bad.

    see it work though. ( This is the 2nd marantz !!!!!!!!)

    Any comments of the Marantz CD50SE (The replacement for the CD65IISE.
    I have a 4 year old JVC XL-V220 CD player that is miss tracking
    on the first track of all 20 odd CD's that I have.

    The HiFi mags rave about this player it has won the best CD player
    under 400.

    What about availability ?
