78.0. "Tuning in for your advice" by CHEFS::TAYLORP () Wed Apr 19 1989 15:24

Any advice on selection of a tuner ? I live in Lower Earley, Reading.
This is a "likely to be used less often that my other sources" addition
to my system, but unless it comes up to a close performance it'll
probably be used even less. I'll play it through Linn LK1, LK2(75)
    and KEF 104.2s.
I don't have specific stations/programmes in mind right now, I want
the ability for my family to listen when the fancy takes us.

    Cheers,
           Phil.

    x number of peset stations

What is your budgeted price ?

I'd prefer auto-tuning and preset stations. The number of stations
isn't that important - if you get 1 you seem to get at least 20!!

Budget isn't fixed yet I am weighing up the options. What I spend
on this I can't then spend on other software (CDs etc.) For now
I'm looking up to and around the #200 mark. In the end I'll use what
advice I get to determine what I'll audition.

Oh yes, one other thing. I'd like it to complement my Denon CD and
Cassette visually i.e. black finish 430mm wide.

    Thanks for your interest,

    Phil.

Excuse me for blowing my own trumpet but

I just bought a Technics ST 450L 3 band tuner a few weeks ago.
It is a automatic with 24 presets it produces a good sound (in my
opinion anyway). It is finished in black and is 63mm high and 430mm
wide (I think). It is easy to use and costs 150 pounds. What HiFi
recommend a NAD (I'm not sure of model) unit for 140 pounds.

My suggestion is to go into somewhere like Laskys,HEELAS or B & B
HiFi and audition some units in your price range and then make your
    choice.

Good luck let us know what you get

Just to add my 1p worth - I too wanted a tuner for similar purposes to
.0 - I don't listen that much to the ether waves so I didn't want to
spend an inordinate amount - yet quality is important too.

In the end I bought a Rotel tuner for about 180 pounds - and very good
it has been too - I've owned it for a while now and still enjoy the
    sound it produces.

Yes it is black - and yes it fits your size specs!

re .3 try Reading HiFi as well - they have things other than purely
Japo stuff - perhaps the budget might just extend to that Meridian!!!
