909.0. "Basingstoke Speed Restriction Changes" by COMICS::SUMNERC (OpenVMS Counter Intelligence) Mon Nov 04 1996 14:52

    		   Basingstoke Speed Restriction Changes
    		   =====================================

This lunch time I noticed that the speed restrictions on Grove Road
(From Venture roundabout to the Golden Lion Roundabout) have changed
from National Speed Limit (60mph) to 40mph. I didn't realize this on
my morning trip to work and I expect I'm not the only one who didn't
    notice the discrete change.

    Drive safely now...

Is there not supposed to be a public announcement to this effect.

I did not notice this either. My girlfriend who lives near Portsmouth
did, and brought it to my attention.

It was in last Friday's Gazette.

Does that count as a public announcement?

This assumes that you read the friday gazzete. An announcement in the
wednesday one would have been nice.

If I have to buy a papaer I certainly do not waste time buying the
    local rag.

They have changed a lot of local speed limits to the 30 limit, On
Hatchwarren Lane (I think that's what it's called - you know - the one
that goes parallel to the motorway behind Brighton Hill and the new
housing in Hatchwarren) they've put up lovely new signs with the
standard 30 limit on a bright yellow background.

Keep your eyes skinned if you don't read the local papers!

    >Hatchwarren Lane (I think that's what it's called -

    Its Cliddesden Lane.

IMO it should be 40mph as should be Hatch Warren Lane which leads from
the Viables roundabout to the foot of the hill where Cliddesden Lane
starts. There are no houses facing these roads. Its bizarre that the
road from Viables to Brighton Hill r'about is 60mph (national speed
limit) which does have several roads joining it and many houses facing
    it. It doesn't make sense.

    Actually,

They've just redesignated that stretch of Harrow Way as a 40 mph zone
    as well, so watch out.

The reason I heard was that the speed has been reduced because
of the PUB and the New houses by the PUB and and also because
of the children walking home from the new school St Marks.

I say well done for reducing the speed, the lower the better I say.
If I had my way it would be 20mph.

High speeds belong on the race track or on the Motorway.

Remember the speed limit is also to ensure your safe journey, could
your car and you handle 60mph on a single track lane???

    my two cents worth

    > If I had my way it would be 20mph.
Is that so everyone would be travelling the same speed as you :->
    only joking - honest !

I agree with you actually. Since I've been driving the speed limit
everywhere (when I've been able to figure out what it is) I find
driving more mellow and relaxing (and safe - touch fake walnut dash)

Unfortunatly this makes me late for work.

Nevermind being ready to leave the house. :-)

    Steve,

You, like the system managers for GOVT02 have not put your clocks back
an hour. I'll prove my point....

Your note says it was entered at 18mumble, when infact it's 17mumble.
    *ALSO*
When I get into work at 0830, you're always in the canteen before me....
    *AND*
You're always exactly 1 hour early for things these days....

    I rest my case.

     Chris,

move groups and get onto shift, that way you'll have a varied
weekly routine and thus be forced to look at clocks often enough
to get to work on time.

    ;-)

Or move here and be 11 hours in front, so you have time to walk
    to work.

     Helpfully yours.

Then the government would introduce bicycle tax, to make up the
lost revenue. I reckon that it is better for the country if the
majority use cars, thus keeping less fit, dying younger and not
overburdening the remains of the NHS.
