901.0. "The Wall @ The Anvil, Charlies Mushrooms - for Romanian Childrens Fund" by KERNEL::COFFEYJ (UKCSC Unix Girlie aka La Feline Flooz!) Thu Sep 12 1996 10:02

The first time any band other than Pink Floyd have got permission to perform
The Wall and it's our local jazz heros - Charlies Mushrooms!

They will be playing at the Anvil on the 29th and 30th of January 1997
Tickets are on sale from the 6th November.

Most of the profits are going to a Romanian Childrens Fund.

See you there...

I've not seen anything (apart from this note) about the forthcoming concerts,
and until my tickets arrived last week I thought it was some sort of wind-up(!)

Is there any more info available on the concerts? Any reason why some sort
of notification couldn't be sent out over the internet?

[I'm hoping the answer will be "it was announced quietly in the notesfile
first, but will be sent out on the Pink Floyd mailing list on Jan-1st, after
which the Anvil switchboards will be jammed, and you can feel really smug
about having got your tickets early"]

Hi Nick,

Musical director P. Dennis - say no more.

I'm sure the lads will have no objection to an Internet posting.
When Water's was first asked for permission to perform it he
said no, hence the Romanian Orphanage bit where one of the band
did some VS. (But I don't think he appreciates the quality of
Robbie's digital recorder).

I hope it's a good evening, I'm just a little disappointed by the
choice of music. I think I'll make a donation but miss out on the
actual event; 2 hours of bum-crushing boredom listening to possibly
the most pretentious pile of crap ever written is not my idea of
a night out. (Apologies to all you hippies out there).

    RE .6

    Exactly.

When the Anvil was in its development stages, the local authorities
were quoted in saying that the Anvil would be a musical centre for the
south signing up all sorts of bands, and music styles. All I have seen
if musicals, battle of the bands, indie crap, and symphonies.

Sounds like the Anvil management are not living up to there promises of
signing up a varied range of performances.

If they had a 12 or even 6 hour Dance/House party they could make far
more than the symphonies would ever dream of pulling in. In terms of
    revenue.

I agree - the Anvil and the Hexagon (in Reading) have both fallen into a
'middle of the road' morass, (there isn't even much 'indie crap').
There is very little entertainment (plays/comedians/whatever)
that appeals away from the mainstream.

Well, I think "The Wall" is a cracking artistic creation, and I'm looking
forward to it (although I'm still not sure exactly what to expect).

I bet you're one of those people who thinks "Tales From Topographic Oceans" is
dated and over the top too.

More info: there's a bit in the winter program for the anvil.

I can't think of a good reason not to internet advertise it
(except I haven't got my tickets yet) ...

Oh but if anyone does forward anything then please please
please make sure you call it Roger Waters - The Wall
not pink ployds as he has rights to it and PF isn't allowed
to be used as the name - it's a tad political to say the
least.

There was a bit on tv (can't remember which program) about a
place in russia for HIV kids - this was a clinic - the
Rumanian one this is for is more of a school/home with
medical facilities I think, but it's similar.

Well, I passed by the garage the guys were rehearsing in
this weekend and it's sounding good.

Ok so I'm biased, ok so I only heard a bit but it was
sounding impressive.

Look out for the posters in the smoking rooms and on the
sports and social boards.

If anyone has a group of friends they want to go with
there's a bulk discount for Thursday night only
- 10 or more tickets bought together gets a 25% discount.

Go on, it'll be a good night I'm sure...

re: .17

Excellent. I took a couple of friends along, and, having had no experience
of Charlies' Mushrooms, we were a bit worried that it might turn out to be
some sort of free-form jazz improvisation fusion, based on themes from the
album.

In fact it was pretty much note-for-note played as on the album. In fact, if
I had to criticise, it would be to say that it was too much like the real
thing (could have done with extended solos, etc.).

But all in all an excellent evening, both friends impressed. Really good to
hear the music live (made me realise that there's hardly a duff track on the
whole album).

I'd say it was a more enjoyable evening than the Pink Floyd concerts I saw from
the "Division Bell" tour.

Well worth going again tonight (assuming there's tickets going & I can get
permission).

They're sold out downstairs and nearly all upstairs seats
are gone too that was as of early this week.

However thanks to a friend from Bristol falling ill and not
being able to come along tonight I have a one off offer of
one ticket for tonights show available to whoever gets through
to me first.

My son, Toby, was in the show doing lots of bit parts (He was the one
smashing up TVs) and was really worried about the lead up to the show
as it all seemed to be organised in a very piecemeal fashion. However
once they all got together on stage it all seemed to gel, mainly as
most of those doing it were PF fans anyway. He was proud to be part of
it and wishes to thank all those who attended as he has never been part
of a standing ovation before. He said for the first time on stage he
blushed at the applause. I am only sorry I couldn't go to either show
    now.

You missed one heck of a show!

I'm biased I know, but it was brilliant, amazing!

I was glad to have a back row seat too since it meant
I could be on my feet for most of it without annoying anyone
behind me... and with the help of opera glasses we could
still see everyone :-)

Talking to the guys afterwards the friday, the bit that
amazed them most was when the house lights went down and
before they were even on stage and playing the screams
and clapping and cheering was everywhere, best audience
you could imagine, best atmosphere I've seen in the anvil
for a gig yet, and I've been to a few.

One down spot, feedback, that started in tune so was mistaken
for part of the music, (must admit even I thought it was paul
to start with) realised when we saw the sound guys panicking
though that it wasn't, it distracted from Ginger and James
little plucky solo but was sorted out at least. Then again
every gig I've been to at the anvil the sound has screwed up
at some point - this was better than all of it cutting out at
least leaving voice, and accoustic guitar the only sound
which I've seen there before :-)

Even the next night, when the mushrooms were playing
Steve Nairns' leaving the country party (remember him?) and
they did ...education again it was still brilliant.

Cute moment of the show:
the girl who stayed on stage when the others left through 3
tracks just to say....
"Look Mummy there's an airoplane up in the sky"
then walked off. :-)
