899.0. "Grumping!" by CHEFS::FIDDLER_M (The sense of being dulls my mind) Tue Jul 30 1996 10:46

    I'm sorry, but I'm having a grump...

It seems that every day things are going missing from my area. This
weekend it was a mouse n mouse mat raid...and someone was using my PC
(which doesn't bother me), but they managed to completely screw around
with its set up (which does bother me). They have totally wiped out MS
Access, and removed various other start up bits n bobs. I don't
suppose the person responsible would own up - and explain to me
what they did so that maybe I could fix it?

I don't think there is any way to disable a PC Steps PC when you are
    not using it?

I'm really sorry for moaning in here, but this sort of thing seems to
be getting worse in here, perhaps it is just a symptom of the
    general discontent and uncertainty.

(noise of man stomping off into the distance and mumbling to himself)

Switch it off when you go home or put a password protected screen saver
on with a password that is not easy to guess?

    Goldy.

Anyone can switch on a 'PC Steps PC' and log into their own Allin1
account, from anywhere. Once in, a Screen Saver PW can be changed
    instantly...

My PC is switched off every evening...

Stick a BIOS password in there.

put a "broken - I.S. aware" sticker on it :-)

It gets worse....a chappie who was moved into our area last week had
8meg of memory stolen from his PC overnight...

Make sure that it gets reported to Claire Rock...It's outrageous!

Do report it properly. There are people in the building all night,
so I can't see how things get nicked. It is outrageous. I think the
security folks at Dec Park (?) are gathering information about the
trends of thefts, in the hope that they can correlate this with site
records to find the culprit(s). I wouldn't want to see office alarms
and other security mechanisms in place in Viables.

    On a lighter note...

    A good tip:

Don't Allow Theives To Ruin Your Life:

Take your PC memory, video recorder, TV set and any other valuable
items and place them in a sack. Wrap in a waterproof material and
bury them in a secret place, referenced only in a badly drawn map,
    part of which is missing.

You may now rest assured that nothing important will be stolen from
    your home.

    Helpfully yours.
Andy. (You ever read Viz ?)
