Folks
	I read the reply about the Aldiss Lamps, and it sounded like a stupid
name so I phoned HMS Nelson in Portsmouth. And lo, and behold they -are- called
Aldiss Lamps, after the bloke who invented them. Richard Anson suggested it
some from of "Fibreless FDDI".

    So lets get this straight.

    You ask a question totally unrelated to this conference but get the
    correct answer in the first reply. You don't believe the answer
    so you contact the authority concerned to verify it.

    Bizarre.

Thanks to Chris I will now be called "nappies of LAN". I will have to go under
cover and grow more hair, if I am to avoid any ridicule.

    After a back to back contest 'sf' at 6' 8" was an inch taller than me

890.14I will bring a meter stick in tommorrowNETRIX::"[email protected]"Steven Wed May 29 1996 17:2112
In a strange twist to the tallest person in MCS saga I win the title.
Not without confusion though. I have decided to put an end to the
debate that has no doubt had the CSC in various states on confusion over the
last week, what with the Aldiss lamps query.

So... tommorrow I will bring in my trusty meter stick which I regularly use
for measuring..things.

Stay tuned.

    Just to get back to the original note (boringggggg!). I am relatively
    certain that the Aldiss lamp is actually a hand help lamp that flashes by
    use of a trigger; just like a gun and trails around on an electrical
    lead (Semi-portable). The huge lights that you see being used in the old
    WW2 movies are called "signalling lanterns" and used arc lights (High
    voltage jumping across two carbon rods). The modern version of the
    latter use high luminousity lamps but are still called lanterns.

890.18On the authority of HMS NelsonKERNEL::FREKESFri May 31 1996 16:169
I had to risk public humiliation by phone a Naval Base just to ask
them what a flashing light was called. I am sure they would have
got there information correct.

To draw an end to this furious debate, which ranged from Aldiss lamps
to my age, my height, and other personal characteristics, I think we
will just call them Aldiss Lamps.
