805.0. "Discount Warehouse ?" by LARVAE::CUNNEA_L (BDF - Bloody Difficult Female) Wed Oct 19 1994 12:12

    Hi All,

I've heard that there is a discount warehouse place opening up in
Basingstoke. From descriptions I've heard so far it seems that
this is the kind of place that charges an annual fee to allow
    Joe public to shop there.

Anyone know where it is ?

I'd also be interested to know if anyone has shopped there and
what they thought of the place.

    Thanks,

    Lesley

It was opened a couple of weeks ago at 12 o clock by Barbara Windsor.
The advertised opening time was 2 o'clock, so everyone missed the
opening. There weren't any prices on the stuff so no-one knew what
    they were buying...

    Hi Lesley ,

I think it's called something like AMDIS ( short for
American Discount Stores - Bleuch !!) and is around
    Houndmills somewhere ....

Apparently there is no join fee until end of December
and then something like 5 or 10 after that .My other
half was sent a complimentary card for some reason but
hasn't used got round to using it yet ....

I've noticed there is another American Discount type
store called T.K.MAXX which has sprung up in Reading &
Southampton ...Not sure if it's the same type of thing
but they sell things like Le Creuset Saucepans at 15
(the smallest cast iron saucier/milk-pan) instead of
30+ .They advertise 20-60% discount on 'Designer'
clothes and goods eg Cerruti/ Valentino/ Jeff Banks /
Planet etc and doesnt require joining but you need a
lot of patience to find what you are looking for ....

    Sandie.../

Visited the Amdis store a week ago...it's rubbish!
Prices are no better than in big stores and there's hardly anything
    there anyway.

    My opinion - don't bother!!

I'd heartily endorse this. Poor range of stock in bulk packs & high prices. On
the other hand the must think that there is a market for people who want to buy
24 large packets of Kellogs cornflakes in one go at a higher price than they
would pay in Tesco or Sainsbury.

On the subject of discount warehouses, are you all aware that Matalan
discount warehouses of Rose Kiln Lane Reading offer instant membership
to Digital Employees and contractors.Membership is automatic on
    production of a DEC i.d.
Matalan is a clothing outlet which offers some serious reductions on a
range of good quality items for adults and children.
Take a turn down there and se for yourself!

I know this has nothing to do with Discount shops, although I must
agree, Amdis is rubbish, and matalon is very good. But I noticed,
that Lynn dadds has been repling to this topic, and as I havent heard from
her for ages and ages, and havent had any luck when trying to mail her.
I thought I'd quickly slip something in in here!!!

I just got a flier from AMDIS who finally seem to have got some
bargains viz.

Amstrad 28" NICAM stereo, teletext TV 299.99 + VAT

It may be an Amstrad but it's an amazingly low price for any NICAM TV let alone
a 28" one.

There's probably only one & _that's_ been sold though.

805.20My cheap TV is cheap!VESDAT::JKAXP1::KennedyDr Chandra...will I dream?Tue May 02 1995 15:2620
Hmmm...I bought a 'bargain' colour TV a few months ago, it's some
strange Korean (I think) brand. I works OK, including all the bells
and whistles like Remote, Teletext etc. The problem is that it's
impossible to get a really good picture on the thing, when compared
to my Sony set. It seems that all the picture controls interact with
each other, the brightness affects the contrast, the contrast affects
the colour and the colour affects the brightness. I checked with
another example of this set and it was just the same, so it seems you
get what you pay for!

The sound is also a bit iffy, I shone a torch into the back of the
set to look at the speaker - it must be all of two (yes 2) inches
diameter! Still, I'm not too upset, I got it for a (comparative)
song.

The kids have got it now, you don't need good picture quality for
cartoons, Home and Away and Top Of The Pops :-)

- John.
