My advice is DON'T take it to a jewellers - take it to a watch
maker/repairer (these people are a dying breed) - don't know of any in
Basingstoke but can strongly recommend "Drummond's" in the High Street,
Thatcham or Des Fennell's in Park Street, Horsham (good friend so tell
him I sent you)

697.2 | Suggested Repairer | CHEFS::JEANESM | Smile - that'll confuse them! | Thu Oct 07 1993 08:19 | 7 |
| Yes, go for Watch Repairers - don't know name but there is a guy in the
market square (by the Bus Station) in the Jewellers on the same side of
the square as the "model" shop. I've found he does clock and watch
repairs that places like Samuels etc won't touch. At lest have a chat
with him.
Good luck

Another option you could consider (if you are south of Basingstoke) is
Evans & Evans of Alresford
They make and repair watches and clocks (as well as selling them)
Just a satisfied customer

| I took my rather valuable mantle clock to the "bloke in the Market
Square" for repair. I won't be taking it there again, despite the fact
that it still needs repair. If you want detailed explanations, I must
(according to Company Policy) provide it verbally - call 833-3554.
I will be seeking an alternative watch/clock repairer now.

| I'd like to get an Asian sapphire ring valued. I went to the "bloke in the
Market Square" mentioned in .4 at lunchtime as it happens but they want
2% (+VAT) of the valuation. The thing is I just want a rough estimate
as I have no intention of selling it. I just want to know if its worth
10 pounds or a couple of hundred.
Can anyone recommend a jeweler in Basingstoke that might be able to do
a free valuation or for a small fixed fee.
Thanks
Royston

| How about offering it for sale to somewhere like Anticks and see how
much they'd give you, as a very very rough guide.

| re 2% (+VAT) of the valuation.
Hmmm, I guess they might over value it so they get more money.
