695.0. "Good Opticians?" by ROCKS::BUDD (I'd rather be turning) Fri Oct 01 1993 15:27

Can anybody give any recommendations for good opticians in the general
    Basingstoke area?

    I'd like information on
     a) Somebody that can carry out a thorough eye test/modern equipment.
     b) Low prices/wide range of frames and lenses

I recognize these requirements may be mutually exclusive!

Specsavers - cheap - wide enough range for me
           - extensive test - no, over very quick, and they use the awfull "is
this better or worse?" technique - I like the "is the red line above or below
the green"

I used Optika for a repair to my (relatively new) glases, and they took a lot
of trouble to get the spare parts, when others had said they weren't available

Dave

I know some folks might say I shouldn't have bothered, but I like my glasses. :^)

    Another reccomendation for Optika.

Modern equipment, very thorough test, with plenty of time allowed..

Large selection of frames at all prices and if they have your lenses
in stock, then your prescription will be ready in about 1 hr. Otherwise
    it's next day service.

Also I believe they are the preferred optician for Digital staff eye
    tests.

I got the full eye test at Optika for half price. Just happened to be
walking past a spied the advert in the window. SHould have known then
    that I didn't need glasses.

The tests included the 'is the red line above the the middle' test etc

The CSC is currently using Optika for all Digital-funded eye tests, for
which they are charging 6 a throw.

They are opposite Marks & Spencer.

Kevin - you are entitled to have an eye test paid for by Digital if you
request it through your Manager. If you need more detail, pop down and
see me (if you can! ho! ho! [sound of sides splitting with mirth all
    over Basingstoke]).

    I'd certainly recommend J,R & H Floyd Opticians ,
                            2a Church St. 0256-28246

I've never had such an exhaustive eye testing session!! ...and
yes he also does the peripheral vision bright dots test, the
red line test etc ,etc ...a bit more expensive though , it was
    10.50 I think , but I felt it was worth it .....

    Jon,

Does Digital (S&SC) have any discount deal with Optika as regards
    purchasing frames ?

    Cheers

    Harvey,

Can't speak on behalf of the Sports and Social Club.

From a Health and Safety viewpoint, we recognise that we are putting a
fair bit of business Optika's way. We are therefore currently in
negotiations with them over "preferred supplier" status and a
substantial discount on all Digital subsidised tests and equipment
    purchase.

    Does that answer your question?
