553.0. "UPVC Replacement Windows." by WAYOUT::CLARKE (The Cat in the Hat comes back.) Wed Apr 22 1992 18:46

Any recomendations for good replacement UPVC window companies in the Basingstoke
area (well any area realy they will travel miles for a sale!)

I have had a very reasonable quote from a company called Quality Direct (took
over Thames & Southern) who apparently have a factory in Newbury - anybody else
heard of them.

The Anglian/Everest brigade will charge more than my house is worth and I am
finding it hard telling the cowboys from the injuns with the cheaper companies.

We selected Laffet & Leavy (sp?) a couple of years back and were pleased with
the result. They didn't want any money up front, and when there was a small
problem (they cut one of the pieces of glass the wrong size, so had to come back
a week later to install the remaining window) the bill was less than the origional!

I'm looking to get some quotes on replacement windows.

Anyone had new windows recently and can recommend anyone local ?

    Thanks

I can recommend Brackenwood, who fitted my windows about two years ago.
They weren't the absolute cheapest, but were the most impressive.

In my experience there is no need to contact these people,
just wait for their monthly phone call and "special offer
for your area only".

Hi Royston

We've had some double-glazing done recently by a guy called Richard Jones,
who's based in Bracknell (although covers the Basingstoke area). I believe
his business is ostensibly roofing, but he does double-glazing too.

He's happy to do as many or as few as you want done in one go, and he seems
pretty reasonable. We've been very happy with the ones that we've had done
so far (17 windows in our house so we're not doing them all in one go!).

Be aware that he's pretty chatty!

Richard's phone number is 01344-867909.

Thanks folks for all your suggestions. What would I do without notes.

I'll check them out and post an update.

Well following my interest in replacement windows I invited a
windowwize salesman round after they did a leaflet drop.

He was either a very good salesman and I was conned ir I got a good
    deal.

I've signed up for 8 windows (4 openers) for 1,666 with no deposit
interest free credit over 2 years.

The full price was 2666 but if I had a sign up for 6 weeks and let them
show a couple of people round they would knock a grand off but I had to
sign up for it there and then. I felt very uncomfortable about this
and said I'd rather sleep on it but having seen an example of the
windows and the assurance of a 10 year guarantee, I felt the price was
right and the interest free credit deal sounded too good to be true so
    I went for it.

I believe that under the Consumer Credit Act that there is a 10-14 day cooling
off period in which you can change your mind. Check the small print in the
contract that you have signed.

Well I just moved in to a new house in Basingstoke and I had a personal
caller and a telephone call last night offering me windows for free...
    I think ;-)

I had that too. The free turned out to be 3000, or 5000 if I didn't
sign up that night. I sent them packing as I just got the impression
    they were sharks.

After some investigation they turned out not to be sharks, but I still
    didn't like the sales technique.

Anyone know any windows companies that do good windows and good prices
    with no "special" deals ?

    Chris.
PS. Let us know how it goes Roystie.

You are correct. Within this period any contact can be withdrawn, from
    either party.
