How do the Basingstokers feel about buying that lovely 50,000 pound
gate?

The one with the piccie of the carrier bag.

Hubby says it's about as good a use of the poll tax as Kingstons
circle of toppling telephone boxes, personally I think the telephone
boxes are quite nice and a darned sight more cheerful looking than
our 'city gates' with all their nice piccies.

    Could've been worse I guess..

Yeuch!

Is this Basingstoke's answer to MK's concrete cows? :-)

What a lovely idea it was to build the marvellous metal structure. I
was only saying the other day that Basingstoke was seriously lacking a
large useless metal construction at the top end of town. I for one am
looking forward to the day they increase the poll-tax by the proposed
20% so I can help pay for it.
