465.0. "Anyone near Winchester?" by SHIRE::PUGH (Wyn PUGH @GEO) Fri Aug 02 1991 10:26

Does anyone live close to Winchester?

We have been looking at houses in King's Worthy and I would like info
on schools, amenities, travelling times (esp Heathrow).

    Thanks, Wyn

I looked there too when I came back from Geneva. Didn't really investigate
in detail. There's a couple of reasonable pubs - but somehow pubs didn't
seem the same after a 4-year absence ;-)

Travel to Heathrow is about an hour - a bit less going home late in the
evening. I've rarely had a trip time of more than an hour (from Andover
area), though traffic moves slowly on the M3 between junction 4 and 3
around 7.30am. Beware, though. I recently got caught out when ALL of the
long-term car parks were completely full. They have recently reconfigured
these so the problem may have been solved.

				Cheers...Keith

    I live in Winchester & I think it's a wonderful place ! Don't know much
about the schools, as for amenities - there's the riverside leisure
centre which has a nice swimming pool, squash courts etc, Theatre
Royal, no cinema (but easy drive to Basingstoke or Ocean Village at
Southampton) lots of lovely restaurants, browsy type shops, but not
quite so good if you have something very specific in mind to buy - but
then there's always Southampton or Basingstoke for the chain stores.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to drop me a mail !

    Wyn,

I have lived in Winchester all of my mere 26 years and love it.

Sarah has given you the low-down on amenities, which for teenagers
unfortunately is few and far between, however as she mention's
you are within easy reach of other locations. It takes approximately
one hour by car to Heathrow, straight up the M3 from Winchester.

There are three comprehensive schools in Winchester - Henry Beaufort,
    Westgate and Kings.

Henry Beaufort is the closest to Kings Worthy, however in my school
days, KW pupils attended Kings (which was then Montgomery for boys,
and Danemark for girls only recently merged) which incidentally has
by far and away the best reputation, pass rates etc etc .....
I'm afraid I don't know about the primary schools, mine was recently
    pulled down!

Hope this helps. Give me a ring if you want any more information.

It's by far the prettiest town for miles around, if not a little
    overpriced and slightly pretentious!
