That's Life spent a while talking about these machines...
Personally (having lived in the States for 4 years, so I'm not a
real expert...) I'd say that an Electrolux professional machine
at about 250 is a somewhat better bet, both technically and fiscally.
If you want to look at one of those the big domestic electric appliance
shop in Reading (ground floor of the big multi-storey - sorry I'm
not sure of the proper name) had one in the window last Saturday
- along with the Hoover and Vax high power wet-and-dry
vacuum/carpet-shampooers which must be very nearly as good. (I
personally have a Hoover that cost me a shade under 140, the Vax
is about the same...)

| Thanks for the info. We were impressed with all the add-ons the
machine had and the quality of build. The machine was quite small
and changed from a hand-held cleaner to an upright cleaner simply
by changing the small handle with a long upright one.
The quality of cleaning was fantastic, it could lift amazing amounts
of dirt from supposedly clean articles ie carpet, sofa, mattress
etc. It also turned into a compressor, a hand-tool power source,
a carpet/furniture shampooer as well as a hand-held and upright
vacuem cleaner. We were well impressed but find the price a bit
steep.

Indeed it does do all those things, but for 800 you could buy a
professional vacuum cleaner, a hand held vac, and an industrial
grade compressor, and have change left over... (My Delta workshop
dust collector system cost me less than half the cost of a Kirby...)
However, much as "That's Life" panned their sales techniques, I don't
recall them actually saying the machine wasn't very good... (just
four times the price of its nearest rival).

| I bought a Kirby a couple of months ago because they are really good
and last for ever!! After a lot of bartering and bargaining I managed
to knock them down to P520 so don't let them bully you with all
the "must buy now" stuff. Only drawback is that the rest of the
family are constantly borrowing it..........

| Does P520 mean 520? If so what was your bargaining technique?
Any hints or pointers you can pass on?

178.6 | Simple!? | SHAPES::ALLENT | | Wed Jul 12 1989 16:59 | 9 |
| Well, it's like this.......
You tell the nice Salesman/woman that no matter how wonderful his/her
machine is eight hundred pounds is totally out of the question,
that there is no way on this earth you would consider paying even
HALF that much and Goodnight.
It was amazing how quickly we got down to five hundred and twenty
plus free supplies for a year (suds, belts etc)
Hope this helps.

| Guess what!!!!!
I bought a VAX!
Not multi-user unfortunately, but it is high-speed, operates cleanly,
uses low-cost software and has internal and external piping facilities.
The operating system is fairly simple and it comes with all manuals.
It was cheaper than a Kirby and came with a two year guarantee.
I am sure it won't be as good but I am saving up for something
else at present so will give it a try and see how it works out.
First day I had it, I shampooed the downstairs carpets, an armchair
and the cat!
